Introducing: SV's Picks of the Month!

The link in the banner to the Reach Heaven Through etc. thread is broken.
Looks like the problem is just the link being this:
when it should be this:
forums.sufficientvelocity.com

Reach Heaven Via Feng Shui Engineering, Drug Trade And Tax Evasion Original - Novel - Fantasy

Xianxia, engineering, tenacity, politics, economics, magic analysis. From the moment Qian Shanyi stepped on the path of cultivation, she wanted to soar through the sky on top of a flying sword, slaying devils and serving justice, at the head of a sect none could defy. Unfortunately, her luck...
I guess the autoembed obfuscates it, but there's just a /threads/ inbetween the SV and thread title parts of the URL.

October 2023 Picks of the Month
So, as the nights get longer and the days get shorter (in the Northern hemisphere, once again I curse the existence of the Southern hemisphere for complicating my ability to use evocative seasonal descriptions), we come to the spooky time of the year. We also come to celebrate three more fantastic Picks of the Month! With a great Pokémon Quest, a really well-loved fic coming over from SB to say hi, and some interesting essays about latex fetishism of all things, not to mention some great User Picks, it's certainly all happening on SV in the month of October!

If you haven't done already, please also take out the time to check out the Sufficiently Spooky events we're running for Halloween. As of the time of posting, you have about thirty and a half hours left to submit an entry to the contests we're running!

A Rubber Veil: Latex and the Problem of Porn by @Gargulec

In a new five-part essay series from SV's resident scholar of sexuality, we consider the problematic nature of what even constitutes "pornography", as viewed through the lens of latex fetishism.

If you are interested in queer and critical theory, or simply spent too much time on Tumblr at a vulnerable age, you are bound to find something interesting here.

Reach Heaven Via Feng Shui Engineering, Drug Trade and Tax Evasion by @Winged_One

I think you got your threads crossed, that thread's not about latex fetishism and not by Gargulec.
I've clicked through and there was indeed no latex fetishism. I found capitalism, and I'm nowhere near masochistic enough for that

November 2023 Picks of the Month
Too late for Halloween, too early for Christmas (much as department stores would insist otherwise), but the perfect time for a Nightmare before Christmas! With November 2023's Picks of the Month, we boldly go where no spaceship designer has gone before, worm our way into Norse mythology or should I say fly, and collectively analyse a cult game (in more ways than one) that by now needs little introduction on SV! And of course, our User Pick invites you with its title alone. Stay tuned for the 2023 SV Winterfest!

Panoplies: Shield Morphology in the Ancient Mediterranean by @Melanoc3tus

What did the Romans ever do for us? Answers range from pornographic graffiti, lawyers, experimentally testing how many angry baboons one gladiator can fight, to internet arguments over the shape of their shields.

This fantastic essay addresses the last point, taking us on a tour of Antiquity and exploring shield types from the Greek dipylon and aspis to the Roman scutum, and illuminating the material factors and martial cultures which produced them. If you're a history buff, prepare for a treat!

Miracles of Saint Lucretia of the Chains by @Gargulec

Winner of the New Year New Chapter contest, this story explores a deep question. Namely, would Warhammer 40,000 be improved as a setting if it more heavily featured Sisters of Battle bullying cute Eldar nerds?

A story about love, lust, and religion in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium.

March 2024 Picks of the Month
Things get intense with March's Picks of the Month! We have the breakout villain time loop quest from the perspective of none other than AtLA's Azula herself, a Mecha, Kaiju, and Kyodai Annopalooza with Godzilla vs Angels among others, and lives on the line to gambling with a readthrough of a classic cult manga.

April & May 2024 Picks of the Month
For April, instead of Picks of the Month, we've got Picks of the Decade:

SV's Picks of the Decade

For May, with the 4th of course being the Star Wars Holy Day, we've got both a Star Wars Quest and Grand Strategy Roleplay picked out. One trying to avoid the Empire, the other going full Empire. The Quest about seeing whether SV can change the fate of none other than Anakin Skywalker, and the Grand Strategy has SV ruling the empire only to be struck with civil war across galaxy. And if the Empire isn't calculating enough for you, we also have an essay that delves deep into the calculus beyond calculus.

The Slave Who Makes Free: An Anakin Skywalker Quest by @Kirook

It's a story we all know. The slave boy with a destiny, forged into a hero by war, only to fall into darkness. But what if things were different?

Step into the shoes of Anakin Skywalker. Don't end up as Darth Vader. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

Pick of the Month in GSRP
Dark Greetings by @Maugan Ra

The first Death Star is a dust cloud orbiting Yavin IV. The Imperial Senate, last vestige of the old Republic, is but a memory. Galactic civil war has begun, and it is time for leaders of vision, bold men and women of action, to lead the Empire into a new era.

Surely fifteen SVers as Grand Moffs can only bring swift victory.

The Infinitesimal Calculus by @Aranfan

If you've encountered much higher mathematics, then you've probably met calculus.

But what about the calculus of Leibniz and Euler, the so-called infinitesimal calculus? How did these great mathematicians of the 18th century understand their own discovery, standing at the crossroads between the mathematics of antiquity and modernity?

This fascinating essay is well worth a read whether you're a mathmagician or a newbie.

The Summerfest Rotating Prompt Writing Jam

This year's rotating prompt jam saw some excellent poetry submissions as well as some great short fiction. In particular the winning entry, The Unkindness of Memory, is well worth a look, as a beautiful and deeply affecting meditation on loss and the passage of time. But it's far from the only great poem this year.

The Summerfest One Page RPG Contest

Our roleplaying game design contest this year saw even more entries and the bar being pushed even higher on every aspect. Whether you want to play beach volleyball whilst mutating into a pelagic monstrosity in Beastball, have Ghibli-core adventures in Children of the Sea, escape the underworld in The Sun and the Labyrinth, or have high society hijinks in One Page RPG, or so many more great games this year, there's sure to be something fun to discover.

Picks of the Month resume as normal, with monster lovers, Worm fanfic spoofery, the aftermath of a very different World War I, and quite a selection chosen by you, the users.

Pick of the Month in Quests
Monster Marriage Quest by @Ghoul King

Sabrina nee Vieuxpont has just been married off to the Baron of Soul-Consuming Carapace Shadows. Not the most likely of matches, especially when her new husband barely seems to know the first thing about humans.

That said, such obstacles are trivial in the face of love, and her new partner's face just happens to be exactly her type (eight eyes and too many teeth).

Pick of the Month in User Fiction
DADA by @fabledFreeboota

Worm depicts a complex world of calculating superheroes and cruel supervillains. Worm fanworks tend towards something a little less stark. In this spoof of stereotypical Worm fanfiction, our cunning protagonist Taylor Hebert is rendered as a barmy British trans lass, lost in a world slightly dafter than she is. But only slightly.

The Widening Gyre by @Curby

The election of an isolationist American President in 1912 leads to a significantly longer and more brutal World War I. After much of the continent falls to revolution, a new world is born. This time-line charts the storm as it breaks over Europe, and what comes after.

September 2024 Picks of the Month
September this year saw some real corkers of threads. In A Different Breed we have another 40K plan quest with a neat concept, which seems poised to rise to the same heights as legends like Age of Strife or Embers in the Dusk. Helios Weeps is another fantastically realised and creative GSRP in an original sci-fi setting - the sheer amount of work put into the art, maps and mechanics is staggering, and it seems already to be being matched by the dedication and quality writing of the players. But perhaps most excitingly, Hyphen, one of SV's favourite long-running fics, celebrated its tenth (!!!) anniversary in September this year. That means it began only a few months after SV's founding, and what an amazing achievement and auspicious omen as we head into our next decade?

More to come soon. We're into October, so look out for some spooky events!

Hyphen by @Dermonster

Hyphen follows the story of a humanoid Pokémon, a Ralts, who learns that her community is in peril from human expansion. Making the only logical choice, she decides to masquerade as a Pokémon trainer and become champion of the Pokémon league to save her village.

This fantastic multiple User's Choice Awards nominee celebrated its tenth anniversary on SV this month, and reportedly was the first Pokémon fic on the internet to feature a Pokémon becoming a trainer. Check it out today!

Helios Weeps by @Furrybacon

Humanity is broken. Ruinous civil war has left the solar system shattered and immiserated, ruled over by a totalitarian regime. Now, that regime is dead: Its last founders slaughtered, its hold on the solar system crumbling.

The question is not 'will humanity descend into war' but 'will humanity survive it'.
