[X] Togashi Hideo
You are going to have to give me an idea of what was done to achieve Hero of the People.
I'll give it a try. Hopefully you and
@storybookknight will like it enough to accept it.
Better a hundred samurai die...
The kaisha you were a part of had been sent to accompany a powerful Isawa shugenja and his small group of Shiba protectors so that he could call upon the elements to destroy a
great bridge before the armies of Jigoku could use it to strike further into the Empire.
Even with the losses suffered from war your kaisha still numbered well over a hundred men and Mirumoto Tomo, the chui in command, had made his displeasure at being relegated to escort duty clear.
When you arrived to discover that the village on the other side of the bridge had not yet been fully evacuated, it was this longing for battle which lead Tomo to heed your suggestion that he should lead the Dragon bushi in a holding action against the oncoming horde.
While the Isawa waited on a hill overlooking the bridge, you and your brothers fought a desperate battle against superior numbers while the remaining villagers fled.
Despite the skill of your clansmen, their numbers were endless and as the losses mounted, Tomo finally called for retreat.
The bridge was wide enough that a dozen men could hold it against an army, and hold it you did.
Even as the fire and lightning of the kami fell upon them, the fiends threw themselves at the dwindling forces of the Dragon again and again.
The minutes seemed like hours, but finally the entire massive edifice crashed into the deep chasm, bringing the battle to an end. Not a single foe took a step on the other side.
Only a handful of your brothers had survived, but countless enemies had been slain, the heimin villagers had all survived, great glory had been won for the Dragon, and the names of the fallen would live on in song throughout the empire.
After the battle, Tomo had taken you aside and asked why you had suggested the holding action instead of leaving the heimin to be slaughtered and preserving samurai lives. You could only give him the answer you felt in your heart:
"Better a hundred samurai die honorably to enter Yomi than a single heimin soul is claimed by Jigoku."
