In fairness, a relativistic missile made of regular matter would do the same thing, as you alluded to after.

The only difference is the antimatter missile starts doing it as soon as it leaves the factory, instead of waiting until after it is fired.
 
"Sixpence none the richer". Mining/prospecting ship.

"Z cars". Customs/police frigates.

"Baguette Launcher". Any artillery vessel with a French name.

"One does not simply walk into Mordor". Spy ship the STG can't track or stop but loves messing with them.
 
"Hotel California" An interdiction ship.

Along with "Sunset Grill" and "House of the Rising Sun" ...I don't know what the sci-fi term for them would be, but they'd be installations that had something to do with solar power, obviously.
 
Let's be fair, some bright spark would suggest 'Ishimura' as a mining/planetcracking vessel. Because anything powerful enough to use gravitics to yoink 5 quintillion tons of rock at a time from a planet can also be used to do unspeakable things to anything it can lock onto.

Also, don't underestimate the impetus of Naval Tradition; Even in the far future, there'd be an Enterprise, a Bismarck, and a Warspite.
 
Speaking of ships. If Boat is an acronym for Bring-out-another-thousand and Yacht stands for Yet-another-cash-heap-torched, how much of a money pit would a private space vessel be?

    So if I'm reading it right, it's been less than 75 years since they first managed FTL travel.
    And look at all they've done....
     
    Based on the dates in the chapters.

    Mind you smart phones have only been around 15 years and the internet as we know it now 30. Yet the difference in society and technology is staggering.

    Think of it like this, the jet engine is probably about 80 years old now. Develop in ww2 it was first used by experimental craft then the military followed by commercial airliners who started flying further and faster in bigger planes as the technology was refined and where a journey across the Atlantic would once have taken about 2 days now can be done in a matter of hours.

    A better way to look at it is that we went from the first controlled heavier than air flight to landing on the moon in 60 years flat. And that's with two global wars between them, along with many other problems.

    Assume that this rate of progress, which itself is speeding up, continues for another couple of hundred years, and toss in WIMP tech... :)

    I liked the science fiction author (Paul Di Filippo, I think) who said that any tech in science fiction, whether allegedly set in 3000AD, or the 25th Century, could reasonably be reached in 50yrs. Not to say that the society/culture of the time would be ready for it, of course...
     
    The reason I chose the jet engine for my example is that it is a singular transportation invention that started as a science experiment and was picked up by the military before moving into civilian usage at corporate level where as space flight at current is still very much in the science experiment (given that various treaties limit how the military can develop in this sector and even with companies like virgin space and space X it is still not quite at the civil corporate level of 1950 airlines companies

    Also I was viewing FTL as a multiplier like the jet engine rather than a completely separate area like heavy than air flight and spacefight.

    We became much more safety-conscious. Flying cars are already possible, as weird helicopter designs. They're just bloody dangerous in any great numbers. For fusion, I've always thought that we might be able to hit it if nuclear proliferation was allowed. There's not enough people researching nuclear tech openly.

    We've had Fusion for decades; it's just not commercially viable yet, as the energy cost is still often either equal to or higher then the usable energy output.

    Also, aside from their appearance, there is no functional difference between a Flying Car and a Helicopter, so we've also had those for decades as well. They just cost so much and are so hard to gain a license to operate that most people simply don't bother.

    another note on flying cars: look at how bad people are when they're limited to two dimensions and somewhat fixed marked paths. now give them 3 far less restricted dimensions to deal with.
     
    Flying cars are almost pointless in the sense of what we think of as cars but flying. Because ordinary people would be flying them, and maintaining them, and ordinary people are incredibly dangerous. Air travel is as safe as it is because either it falls into military flight, with extremely high training levels for pilots and maintenance with a budget to match and an acceptance of a certain amount of risk, or commercial air travel with nearly as high training levels for pilots, possibly higher levels for maintenance, and extremely strict regulations covering all facets of operation. Which still doesn't always work. Or it's general aviation, which has an accident rate a couple of orders of magnitude higher than either of the above, and is pretty much the preserve of the wealthy in one way or another, and still has a lot of regulation and training required to fly and maintain the aircraft.

    If you increase the numbers in the air from low hundreds of thousands to high millions, and have the people doing most of it be like ordinary people driving cars are going about their current practices, the carnage would be appalling. Very few people would be able to maintain the vehicle to a safe level, or operate it safely, because they can't do that now with cars that stay on the ground.

    The only way it could possibly work is to have every one of those flying cars completely under computer control at every moment, and have a massively complex and heavily enforced regulatory regime for operation, which would be difficult in a number of ways.

    On the other hand, we'd probably have fusion now if the sort of money, time, and research that's gone into cell phones had been put into fusion research...

    Seriously, the phone market has taken trillions of dollars of research to get to where it is today. Far, far more than has been spent on space travel, or fusion research, or possibly even fission research including military work on bombs. It's not a matter of ability, really, it's a matter of number of people working on it, and while the numbers surrounding costs of fusion research sound large, compared to the amounts that have been and are spent on all the fields surrounding commercial phone design and manufacture over the last few decades, they're practically rounding errors :D

    Or drugs, for that matter, or computers, or most other things that we take for granted.

    Reminds me of a BT story where the OC found that their reality got mirrored in BT like they did in ours (with codex for military forces). Even a TV show that got produced as a propoganda piece by Amaris (they changed the nation's name from Amaris to Amarrica ) with one of the wide spread props being a hand size black rectangle that was a supercomputer that could pull all sorts of data. With the writers giving it more functions at the show went on, which looking at our smart phones that way, they do seem to look like a bad writer's plot device.

    And everybody had a black tablet that linked them to an AI that did their shopping, and picked out movies for them to watch.

    The thing is, those black tablets with AI on them were everywhere in the show. Basically because the props were so cheap, they made tons of them. It became the show's iconic item.
