In which JarringToaster attempts to Nuzlocke Pokemon Insurgence

Part 1: Exposition
Location
Your Native Universe
Oh dear what have I gotten myself into here? Long story short, Pokemon Insurgence is a game made by reddit user thesuzerain with RPG Maker XP. This person was also responsible for making Pokemon Zeta and Omnicron, games which were made with RPG Maker XP as well. From what I played of this, it's actually really good.

I would explain more, but you'll see for yourself.

Praise Arceus, there are multiple save files in this game! If I remember correctly, you can have a maximum of three different files.

The options at the start are the same in which you'd find in a lot of Pokemon games, but these ones down from Stat Change Overlay are new additions.
  • Stat Change Overlay: You're able to see the modifiers of how much a Pokemon's stats have been increased or decreased.
  • Difficulty: I believe that at Hard Mode, depending on how many Gym Leaders you have beaten, you'll reach a level cap and only start receiving 1 XP per Pokemon until you tough it out and advance. Not familiar with Easy Mode, but I assume that it increases the XP you get (don't quote me on this).
  • Turbo Speed: At the press of a button, everything will be faster. Compare it to the speed up feature for when people play ROMs.
  • Purity Mode: Many new Pokemon designs appear in this, including new Megas and [HAS NOT BEEN MENTIONED YET] Pokemon. Purity Mode replaces the new designs of already existing Pokemon with old traditional ones. They're mentioned to still being in the game, but you have to search for them...not that I know what that exactly entails.
  • Constant Daytime: It's pretty much exactly what says. Turning this on means that there will never be a nighttime.

As we enter the game, we are asked which story that we want to start with. The lighter story is described as one that has no character deaths and lightens some plot points. The story generally remains the same, but just less dark in general. However, this can be changed later in the game. Whether this is an option that is unlocked or a diverging story part is unknown to me. I chose the darker story, because the plot calls for me.

Onwards, to ADVENTURE!

Did I say adventure? I meant exposition.

This person, who is currently unnamed at the moment, goes on to describe someone known as "The Augur". Throughout the Torren Region, instead of crime syndicates such as Team Rocket/Aqua/Magma/Plasma/Tacky Orange Shades, the region has dangerous cults, each with their own agenda. The Augur was a sort of hero who went around disbanding said cults with his power of friendship Pokemon. However...

He never returned.

And so, to be the hero that is currently missing, this man decides to proclaim himself as the second Augur. With this, the exposition ends and we go right into the game.

(Question, are the pictures too big or too small?)

The pictures seem fine so far. Then again, I am on a phone. Looking forward to the rest Toasty!

Part 2: Awake for Adventure

Immediately after the exposition, the game asks us if we want to do a Challenge Run. If I recall correctly Pokemon Zeta and Omnicron had this feature as well. Pretty nifty if you ask me.

These are all the runs that are available. I honestly have no idea what the PP Challenge, Mystery Challenge, Non-Technical Challenge, or Bravery Challenge is. As you can probably guess by the thread title, I'm going to do a Nuzlocke Challenge.

Once a Pokemon is fainted, it stays fainted. Items that can be used to revive them will not work at all.

Oh look it's the plot. It finally came for me.
"Who are you?"

"Huh?"
"...Your name. Can you at least remember your name?"
"Hold on...I think it may start with the letter J. Hmm..."
"We don't have time for this! J! Your name is J!"
"That sounds like a very lazy name. Honestly, I feel sorry for any person who's literally named after a letter."
"ARGH!"

"What's here?"

"The Gengar that's been staring at you for the last 15 minutes that it took you to recall that your name started with the letter J. Now hurry up and wake up!"

Well that explains the memory loss.

"Same as always, unconscious."

The lady asks if they're going to attend.

"Three more stamps on my sacrifice attendance card and I get a new color for my text."

Very good question. It's probably got something to do with the bargain mentioned earlier.

Suddenly, Mew ex Machina comes in and drives away the Gengar. Thank you for further directions mysterious disembodied voice! Main character then gets out of bed with Mew accompanying them. I can already tell it's going to be the start of a wonderful friendship.

"Don't judge me."
As we wander around this base, we come across some books that expand upon what we know about the cults.

Perfection is above such petty practices such as calling itself a cult!

NOTE said:
I chose Mew to help you out due to its special ability. It is able to use Transform to change its form and disguise itself as something else. However, unlike Ditto, Mew can transform you as well. If you find DNA, Mew can disguise you as someone else. You should be able to use to escape the base. Good luck.
-Your benefactor

...Well then.
We go upstairs and conveniently find a pool of blood ready for use.

*Insert transformation scene*
"Oh god it hurts! Why did I think that having my entire DNA be rewritten would be painless!"

And with this, we can use our newly obtained DNA to open locked areas that we could not access before.

Holy shit, your starter's Mew?!
Okay, gonna play the fuck out of this. Mew's my favorite Pokemon, so actually being able to have it in my team, especially as my starter, is the absolute best.

Part 3: Even with Sister Drama F.O.E.
So, with our nifty new disguise, we go around the base and pick up some items along the way. Then we go to another room where a bunch of cultists are gathering, presumably for the sacrifice mentioned earlier.

"Considering we're all wearing the same uniform, I would guess that we look familiar."
(Please don't notice the obvious Mew walking around me)

Wait, that bloodstain was a year old? It honestly looked new. Then again, we're all wearing the same uniform.

...Seems legit. Do you guys also play hopscotch in order to see who gets to clean up the blood?

Anyways, the person being sacrificed it complaining about how they're being sacrificed. The leader then replies with how they're a cult, and how they knew what they were getting into. The ritual then begins for summoning Darkrai.

My Google Translate skills say that it's basically the equivalent of, "O lord, I call upon the power of the shadows!" or something like that.

Wait...since when does Darkrai do THAT? I mean with the exception of one trio of games in the Pokemon series, Darkrai's never been known to do anything malevolent like that at all? I think said lady may be overselling a Pokemon whose main power is to cause nightmares without it wanting to.

Leader lady then tries to (unsuccessfully) butter up Darkrai in an attempt to get it to join the cult.

"Awkward..."

"With my guidance, and your power, the world could be ours." (Yes, she actually says this.)
Again, said lady might be overselling said Pokemon a bit too much.

With this incredibly weird situation, Darkrai just NOPES out of here.

She doesn't need any Pokeballs to make this Legendary come to her.

The scientists then try to console said leader with her rejection failed attempt at recruiting Darkrai, and she promptly rewards them for their efforts.

With the sacrifice over, we are free to explore the base more and finally escape it. However, we cannot go back to the prisoner cells, as a cultist is blocking it for our own protection.

While exploring we come across some books with some information on the Darkrai Cult. The leader's name is Persephone.

"Someone didn't take their rejection at prom well."

"Free at last! And out of those stuffy clothes!"

We head South and run into some wild Pokemon along the way. It's nothing that we can't handle with our blatantly overpowered Level 65 Mew. Yeah...we're totally not keeping this. Eventually we reach Telnor Town, and we notice something with Mew.

"Where are you keeping this stuff?"

NOTE said:
This flute lets you call upon Mew when needed. To use it, go into your Bag and either use it directly or register it. Good luck.
-Your benefactor.

"Register it? Wh—"

Mew then disappears. Well bye!

"No...Definitely no Mew here at all. Must have been one of those flying Dittos. Those things are everywhere."
"But I thought I sa—"
"FLYING! DITTO!"
"Well anyways..."

"Nice to meet you. I'm J."

"J? That's a weird name. Who has a letter for a name?"
(How did he know it was just the letter and not something like Jay?)
"Anyways, you came to Telnor Town at the perfect time."

"You mean Red...or Steven...or Cynthia?"

"Who are they?"
"...Never mind. Continue."
"The mayor and the townsfolk have been preparing ever since this morning. I'm excited! I was just running errands before he arrives! I know! Why don't you help out? We're assigning in the Town Hall! You know, cleaning and so on."
"But I—"
"Bye!"
"Well, time to go search around the town."

We hear some interesting things about the Augur along the way.

...Is this a reference to that one piece of ORAS fanart that has Archie's plan involving wrestling Kyogre?
Into the town hall!

...Next update as I'm reaching the Image Cap.

Part 4: Excuse me, you seem to have broken the Bitch Gauge.

...Hasn't this man only been Augur for a year? Unless he's done lots of stuff in that year, I don't see how he's deserved to be rewarded presents from everyone in town? Wouldn't that honestly just leave him with a lot of stuff that he wouldn't want?

Oh hi Damian, I didn't see you in that part of the room.

"No I didn't."

Explanations happen, and then we learn that Damian neglected on giving the Augur his tribute. Luckily, this man has him slightly covered and points him into a direction where he might be able to get a present.

However, because the caves are full of dangerous Pokemon, Damian is required to get his first Pokemon for protection from the professor of this town.

The lady next to the man, which we learn as Damian's mother by adoption, has immediate complaints about this...and goes a little far with it.

"Holy shit..."

Seriously, he may be a little irresponsible for forgetting the tribute that he's supposed to give to the Augur (which I still think is bullshit), but calling him antisocial seems completely wrong considering his friendly behavior so far. It also appears that she's been preventing him from leaving town with a Pokemon, even though he's well past the age that he should, with all the other kids around his age having already left.

Luckily, the man, who I'm not sure is the mayor or not, puts a stop to her rampage and says that Damian's allowed to go, and if he has responsibility with the Pokemon, then he should be allowed to keep it and go on a journey. As you can guess, his mother has no faith in her son. This isn't even at overprotective mom levels, it's just absurd.

"Technically yes..."
"Go with him."

"Ooooh."

Apparently Professor Sylvan has a lot of leftover Eevees from her trainer days, so she gives those out to the kids who leave town. Honestly, I don't see a problem with that.

Along the way, we learn more stuff about this regions Gyms. The first Gym is in Vipik City, with its leader being someone called Xavier. That's not the big news though.

THIS is the big news. Gyms now have a theme, which allow them to cover multiple Types, and apparently the Elite Four are a whole 'nother type of crazy. It's a shame that this current version only goes up to Gym 6, but from what I've seen there's lots of stuff that happens in between Gyms.

As we enter the lab, we listen in on a conversation with the Professor and an acquaintance of hers.

Apparently these Pokemon will die out in the wild if they're not taken care of. Not even Magikarp have this problem often.

"A...a cult leader? Those people are evil, Professor! You shouldn't be talking to them, let alone accepting gifts from them!"
"Seems like the gifts were more just thrown at her."

We then learn about Delta Pokemon. Essentially, these Pokemon are based on a phenomenon in the Holon Region, where Pokemon have a different typing and abilities than normal.

"However, if I heard correctly, those Deltas that man handed you seemed like less of a natural phenomenon and more of a man-made thing."

Sylvan then offers us four choices, the three Delta Pokemon, or the Eevee that she normally gives out. Damian has some doubts about this.

"It's not certain that the man is a murderer...just highly highly likely."

We have the option of a Delta Bulbasaur, which looks like that it had glitter thrown on it and put into a cartoon oversaturated with pink and other such colors.

Delta Charmander, which is essentially a DRACOLICH!

And Delta Squirtle, or as I like to call it, Discount Greninja.

Oh, and the Eevee. I guess that's an option as well.

[x] Eevee

Eevee is the most huggable option. Search your feelings, you will know it to be true. :3

Ok, ok. Admittedly, it comes with a lot more suffering till 60% of the way through what the creators have released. And this is a Nuzlocke.

So if not Eevee, I cast my vote in this totally democratic system for:
[x] Dracolich

Edit: And I just processed that you're doing this as a Nuzlocke... Uh. Good luck! :o

Unfortunately, it's not a vote. I already chose my starter and am a bit ahead on this. :lol

Generally, if I post it as an update, you can assume I'm already well past it.

Part 5: [JUDGING INTENSIFIES]
And so, I make the obviously correct choice, and choose the Dracolich.

"Sure. Why not?"

The starter that is chosen is two levels higher than Damian's, regardless of which one you pick. I was honestly a bit worried, because I learned very early into the battle that Delta Squirtle had Bite. Still, I was able to win.

Damian then heads out to Shade Forest, and before I go, Professor Sylvan stops me.

"Damian rushed off before I could give him one, but I'd like you to have this."

"Do you want me tell Damian to come back and get this?"
"No, not really."

Before we go out to Shade Forest, we wander the town a little bit.

"...Okay, I know the name that I gave you wasn't the best, but you don't have to judge me."

In the Pokemon Center, there are two additional levels. Upstairs is the Pokemon Market for all the item needs, and downstairs is something I really really like.

A clothing shop for character customization needs. I loved the hell out of the options that we had in Pokemon X/Y.

"MUST! NOT! SPEND! MONEY! ON! CLOTHING!"

"Huh? What's this?"

I honestly have no idea what this is supposed to mean. It's probably something to be implemented later as the game only goes up to six badges at the moment.

Finally, stocked on items, we head out to Shade Forest and receive our first encounter, which we then catch without difficulty.

"...This is going to happen with every Pokemon I have isn't it?"

We run into a few trainers and items (including a Pokegear) along the way, with no casualties. The Pokegear comes with a map that shows us what the Torren Region looks like.

"I have a Dragon/Ghost Pokemon. Unless you have a Fairy, Dragon, Dark, Ghost, or Ice Pokemon at this point, you're likely to get wrecked."

A good portion of the Pokemon here as well as the ones with the trainers still have Normal type attacks, which doesn't effect Drakich at all. After this route, we reach Telnor Cave and receive our first encounter.

"...I'm not even surprised."

In the deeper depths of cave, the plot is found once again...which will be shown in the next part.

Part 6: *Insert Stone-based joke*
Surprise! You thought this would be dead like many other Pokemon LPs on here, but it's not dead yet!

TO THE PLOT!

"It was a race?"
"Yes...I think. Anyways, I think that's the Rare Stone that the mayor was talking about, over there. Over on the far right of the cave, you can't miss it."

Hmm?

"Yveltal's better!"
"Shhh!"

"Well, we won't have to worry about him after today, do we? Let's get going!"

"I mean, they could have been criminals that weren't related to any cults at all."
"...Those were cultists!"

"Well, we're actually not. We're more on the sidelines of this."

"Do we really? I mean, he supposedly wrestled Kyogre and won." Wait, what abou—
"Yes! We have to hurry! The Augur might have already arrived! Quick, let's go!"
"Wait, what abou—"

"J, we have to hurry! The Augur can be attacked any minute now!"
"......."

"This was the so called "Rare Stone" that we went all this way to get, and then left without getting? I don't care, I'm keeping this."

The starter that is chosen is two levels higher than Damian's, regardless of which one you pick. I was honestly a bit worried, because I learned very early into the battle that Delta Squirtle had Bite. Still, I was able to win.
So fun fact, if you lose that battle, the game doesn't count that as having lost the Nuzlocke challenge, or at the very least doesn't tell you you've lost.

...No, I most certainly didn't find that out firsthand, why do you ask?

Part 7: The Meaning of Tact
Surprise! This thing isn't dead yet!

So before we go back the actual story, we decide to read a book.

The second Augur is a beautiful and ruggedly handsome trainer who is constantly saving the world. He is incredible, and he is the hero we deserve and need.
"...This tells me nothing."

Onwards to the Town Hall!

Obviously we need to warn him in a way that won't cause panic or bring a large amount of attention to ourselves.

Anyway this ends up turning out exactly how you'd expect it to, with everyone questioning Damian. Luckily for him, the cultists decide to screw subtlety and end up saving Damian the embarrassment.

"That's incredibly descriptive."

Now the smart thing to do would be to let the Augur, the so-called hero of the people fight his own battles since he's obviously more experienced than two teenagers who just got their starter Pokemon.

"What? Oh no there's two of them. Please don't tell me you're dragging me into this."
"Of course! Come on J, we can take them!"

"I won't back down! This is my chance to prove myself!"
(If this doesn't end horribly, I'll be incredibly surprised.)

And so, we start the battle.

Okay, gotta give props where it's due. That looks really neat.

He starts off with a Skrelp which, due to it knowing Faint Attack, causes me to immediately switch out to my Nidoran. Luckily, Julius is able to take it with a few Potions.

The next Pokemon is a Horsea, which didn't give me nearly enough trouble as the Skrelp did. These guys honestly weren't kidding when they said that they had strong Pokemon. The battle was actually quite a challenge.

The battle is won.

(Wait, is the Augur using magic?)
Google Translate converts that to "bonds of death". Did the Augur just kill two cultists with magic in front of a group full of people?

Damian asks a very good question. Pretty surprising for someone who was previously just hero-worshiping the Augur.

(Is NO ONE gonna question that the Augur just did magic?)

I honestly wonder what the scene would have been if we lost. Damn you image cap!

Hey, cool, this is still going!

Really, this is kinda annoying. Dracolichmander is objectively the best choice, but this battle is a lot harder with it than with Crystalsaur or Dartule.
So many Dark attacks in this game...

What I really like about this game is thesuzerain made it genuinely challenging no matter what starter you chose. I'll admit that this game is actually hard, with even early game trainers having good Pokemon with actual good moves and abilities. However, the difficulty doesn't reach the point of being unfair (something that I have a slight problem with Pokemon Reborn for having).

The game basically goes, "You think choosing a Dragon as your starter is gonna prevent you from getting occasionally wrecked? lol."

Part 8: Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fairy Type.

And so, the Augur makes his leave.

"I think so..."
"I think your foster mother is going to have trouble making you stay if that's the case. Damian, this is your chance to go on an adventure!"
"In that case, I need to get going as soon as possible. All my friends have already arrived at Midna Town and are training at the Trainer School."
(You have friends?)

Seriously, with how much this game kinda shits on Damian, I wouldn't be surprised if the player character was his first actual friend.

"Okay, see you there!"
"But I didn't agree to the race!"
"Byeeeeee!"

(If talking with him in a normal manner and actually interacting with him is what these people call being friends, maybe getting out is good for him.)

Anyways, we go all the way through Telnor Cave, and we finally make our way to Route 1.

We end up running into a trainer that gives us a bit of a problem.

"Fffffffff"

This Jigglypuff almost wrecked my team. I couldn't put Dracich out there because it had Disarming Voice and is a Fairy type. It kept using Defense Curl to buff its defense and any debuffs used on it would cause it to raise its Special Attack. I got a bit risky with it.

In the end, I decided to gamble everything on lowering its Accuracy with Sand Attack and had to throw my Roggenrola under the bus. I then got really lucky and ended up beating it with no further casualties.

Goodbye 11 Days of. You really didn't do anything to be honest.

On the plus side, I got a really good Pokemon for my encounter of Route 1.

Surprisingly, it wasn't too hard to catch.

In the Pokemon Center, I found something pretty funny.

This game's actually filled with a lot of stuff like this, so checking the bookshelves is actually worth your time.

In Route 1, we enter a cave which leads us to get another encounter.

"..."

We catch the Zubat and name her Harbinger.

Through the cave is another area that we haven't been through before.

"Oooooh."

The Nurse Joy in this area will heal you Pokemon so you don't have to rush through to Midna Town or go all the way back to Telnor Town.

We go into the grotto to find...oh wait I hit the image cap. Guess I'll save it for the next update.

Oh, okay, I'm caught up. I didn't realize this was so recent! If this isn't dead, as you keep joking about, I think I'll follow along, maybe give you some advice - I'm much further into the game than you are. Good Luck! You'll need it!

Yeah this game is quite hard (in a good way). I honestly have a lot of pictures for updates saved up, but due to finals and a little procrastination, I haven't been able to get to updating as much as I would like.

I'll say it right now, I'm not intending on just dropping the run.

Oh dear Arceus, I know exactly what you mean with the procrastination. I'm doing it right now, in fact! [sheepish]

Though, if I'm gonna be the guy who voices the wise, mentor-y advice, one thing immediately springs to mind: if you haven't done so already, I recommend that you find a TV in a city you "can't get any encounters in," sit down in front of it, and spam c/enter until - well, you'll know it when it happens. ;) It spawns a Rotom, eventually.

I use Cheat Engine to speed up the game to 2x or 3x, and AutoHotkey scripts for automated repeat-pressing-of-keys. :3

Most people wouldn't bother, but I've been corrupted by emulators' faster speed settings.
