Subject: Regarding acceptance of position of Acting Regional Manager of Milton County

Hi,

Thank you for accepting the position of Acting Regional Manager in Milton County. Everyone here at the Milton branch of the MetaHuman Management Agency is looking forward to your arrival. We have great hopes for what we may achieve during our time together.

As requested in your previous e-mail, I have contacted the managers of each of our departments and notified them of your expected arrival time and date. All of our management team is excited to have someone of your experience working with us!

I have attached a document containing the information regarding the metahuman situation in Milton County that you requested.

If I might make a request of you before you arrive, I would like to take the time to inform our acting metahumans of your relevant experience within the fields of metahuman activity before you arrive. Several of our acting metahumans have expressed concerns over your suitability for the position, and this would be the most effective way to quiet those concerns. Would this be okay with you?

Regards,

Susan Lola
Milton County Regional Director, Human Relations

Attached Document said:
During the time we operated beneath the previous Regional Manager (Raina Stilson), the Milton County branch experienced moderate difficulties in the execution of our primary goals in the area.

Engagement rates fell well beneath minimum acceptable rates (as set out in the MHMA Policies & Procedures Manual, page 267, 'Engagement Rates'), leading to frequent hospitalization of several key members of our response teams. This was the primary factor behind the resignation of the previous Regional Manager.

Our Public Relations department also informs me that our image with the public is currently in a less than desirable state. Although our successful arrest rate is well within acceptable standards, our frequent injury and hospitalization rates have a direct correlation to a decline in successful recruits amongst emerging metahumans.

We have also found our Collateral Damage budget strained past acceptable standards quite frequently. Our financial situation is poor, although we are not at imminent risk of collapse.

Further details have been attached. If you wish to know more, please speak to the appropriate managers of each department.

Sure. A quick bio can't hurt much.

I'm a 29-year-old...

[] Man
[] Woman
[] Other- Please explain this choice. (i.e. Don't just choose trans for kicks.)
(Note that this choice won't influence anything in terms of mechanics and gameplay, but will influence how other characters react to you in the narrative. Some characters will react better to you if you are one gender, and some characters will confide things to one gender they will not to another. Please think carefully before you choose.)

I was born in Australia, where I went to school until I was fifteen. I moved to America during eleventh grade, where I finished my schooling at the age of seventeen and moved on to college, where I studied...

[] Psychology
[] Business
[] Literature
[] History
[] Other- Please list what you studied.

... for four years before graduating.

I managed to secure a job with...

[] The local police force in Chicago.

I was there for a few years, first acting in the traffic violations department, before later moving into undercover work for the Narcotics department. Before I could move on to work with the Homicide department, as was my eventual goal I was injured during the Chicago Riots, instigated by the metahuman locally known as 'Padrone'. I lost my left arm and eye in the attack, and retired from my position soon after.

I was working as a security guard for the hotel I lived in when you contacted me about this position. Still not sure why you did, but probably best not to tell them that, hehehe.

[] The army.

Nothing special, not really; I was bounced around a bit, spent some time with the Intelligence department and the Vehicular department before being shunted off to regular soldier duty when I was deployed in the Icelandic Civil War after my 24th. Got promoted a couple times; never did manage to get a leadership position, but Captain Rogers relied on me to keep the men in line and make sure everything was in working order.

We lost that war thanks to that Quietus bastard and his attack on our positions through 2011, but I was one of the lucky ones. Lost a bit of feeling in my body, still have trouble hearing without hearing aids, got no sense of smell any more- but hey, at least I walked away alive. Better than I can say for the rest of us.

You know what happened after that. You were the one that asked me to take this job, after all.
[] The CIA.

Not half as exciting as you'd hope, though. I was with their Special Activities Division, worked with the PAG (Political Action Group), mostly handling cyber warfare. Worked with their tech division a lot, lotta great technopaths down there. I was mostly responsible for handling the maintenance of firewalls and security systems, though- had to keep an eye out for anything that might wanna get in.

Only time I ever got involved in hacking in- well, let's just say, there's a reason I'm mute nowadays, there's a reason I hate Senator O'Reilly, and there's a reason I ain't never going back to New Zealand.

That's where I was when you called me about this job, actually. Livin' it up over in New Zealand, still half-dead on painkillers and whiskey thanks to what those bastards did to my leg. Never thanked you for that, did I? I'd probably still be there, drunk off my ass, if it wasn't for you. Really, thanks. I owe you... a lot more than I can say.

Anyway, that's about it. You should be able to spin that. Can't really give you any more, not when you won't even tell me why you got me the job. Hope it helps.

Hey, if nothing else, I can always just introduce myself when I get there anyway, right? Gotta remember to do that, hehehe.

I'll see you next week.

----------------------------------------

And now for a couple pieces of out-of-character votes!

Just quick ones, though. Namely:

Would you like a quick tutorial before we begin? If you choose to do so, we'll take over the life of Jason Wells, a minor crime lord in Milton, for a couple days. This will help to get you familiar with the pace and mechanics of the quest. This won't be absolutely necessary, though; the mechanics are pretty easy to pick up on.

[] Yes- Engage Tutorial
[] No- Skip Tutorial

And secondly; would you prefer the quest to be written in second or third person?

[] Second Person
[] Third Person

Looking at it in the BB code editor(which I suggest resorting to as a first measure if you have formatting problems), you managed to get a couple of semi-broken indents in there. Unless you were referring to another formatting problem?

Nope, that's that; thanks.

I somehow managed to break the spacing between paragraphs. Not sure how; hopefully it won't happen again.

[X] Yes- Engage Tutorial
[X] Second Person

Chose this to give our character some flavor and weirdness. The Psychology bit is for dealing with group dynamics and the stresses of being a hero. The CIA because I felt like it

EDIT: Yes, I know, the chances of somebody going with the above build is unlikely, but hey, it isn't like you ever see hermaphrodites in comics as an actual character.
EDIT2: Found out that CIA is crap.
EDIT3: Found out CIA isn't as crap as I thought it was.

What, the biotechnology?

Yeah, it's allowed. That said, you're just a regular human, not a technopath; without the ability to understand technology, you'd have to go the hard way to build anything, which would involve... time, and resources, and effort.

You wouldn't be building anything with biotech knowledge, basically. You'd be able to understand others talking about biotech, though, which could be important later down the line.

I've been informed that comments between votes makes the vote counting program complain. That said, I like this character!

Keeping it simple. Our background should help us extensively in interacting with hero's and villains.

That sounds fairly interesting. Let's go for it.

IRL implies serious hormonal and/or genetic disorders, likely means infertility, mood swings and less-than-perfect physical conditions. May result in good drama. Conflicted social opinion is likely.

All-in-all has good drama potential, but limited action potential and to use it fully a good amount of self-reflection is needed, that AFAIK is not something very popular on this forum.

Anyway

While I have little doubt in my ability to write such a protagonist- I am, after all, all too aware of the disgust and hatred one experiences for having a body that is simply not the body they want- that is indeed a very good point; everyone should probably think it through pretty carefully, because such choices will impact a lot of things due to the innate need for greater self-reflection and anxiety it will undoubtedly bring into being.

Not that I'll say no if the vote wins, of course; I offered the ability to choose a non-binary gender knowing full well that I might end up writing a non-binary gender. I'm not that stupid, and if that's what wins, that's what wins, and that's what'll get written.

Edit: I'm aware that non-binary gender is the wrong term here, as the protagonist would so far self-identify as female and that's definitely a binary gender option. I'm too tired to remember the correct terminology at the moment, though.

This seems like the most interesting plan to me, and I do look forward to seeing how this quest goes.

It's something I've noted before, but every time hermaphrodite comes up as a gender option in a quest [whether GM offered, or someone writing it in] people jump straight on it like starving hyenas on a crippled wildebeest. I'm not sure why, as it really has no benefit whatsoever.

Probably the same reason people jumped on the "Make Harry Potter Genderfluid" vote I made in another quest. What can I say? People like weird things.

Alright. I've counted up votes, and currently it looks like the following vote is winning;

[X] Woman
[X] Psychology
[X] The CIA
[X] Yes- Engage Tutorial
[X] Second Person

I'm going to close votes in about... two and a half hours. If anyone wants to vote further, now's the time. Additionally, now would be a really good time for anyone to make any arguments they have; if anyone makes a particularly persuasive or interesting point in their argument, you may even sway me away from choosing the result based solely on the number of votes for each choice.

I'm going to say that the CIA is the worst option here, because while it might give us training and connections... Well, to be frank, none of that makes up for the whole 'Being Mute' thing.

We can't send orders over the radio. We can't give verbal feedback to our guys. We can't cry for help if we're attacked.

Being mute fucking sucks. The other two routes have significant downsides too, but nothing as potentially troublesome as that- Hell, even being literally crippled is less dangerous in our position than being mute, because our job doesn't involve going out in the field at all.
