Voting on Imoen's image is still ongoing for several more hours if you have a preference. See the post here.
Next story update will be later tonight. In the meantime, here's some character sheets to tide you over.
That is just a summary sheet; feel free to ask other things about their builds if you are legitimately curious.
Also, not a vote at this time, but if you have thoughts or ideas for the builds of other characters, please share (it's okay if not!). I have ideas for all of them, outlined in the spoiler below, but none of that is set in stone. (Well, that's not true. Some things will not change: Edwin will be a wizard, e.g.). It will eventually be a vote, but I'm thinking that giving the possibility of discussion before any vote happens may be a good thing.
Mazzy Fentan. Halfling. Stats 12/19/16/12/13/17
Paladin primary. Secondary levels in a mixture of Rogue, Fighter, and (eventually) Monk (Charisma variety).
Edwin. Human. Stats 8/16/18/20/14/10
Wizard Primary, perhaps with Loremaster prestige class. Secondary class is either Alchemist (Mindchemist), to get smarter with drugs, or Kineticist, for a reliable blast power that synergizes well with his high constitution.
Haer'Dalis. Tiefling (Half Elf by appearance). 12/19/14/14/12/17.
Mostly Bard & Slayer, with levels in Fighter & Rogue as well.
Jan Jansen. Gnome. 7/16/19/18/14/9.
Alchemist (Mindchemist) primary. Wizard/Rogue/Arcane Trickster with secondary.
Jubilost. Gnome.
Alchemist (Grenadier) primary. Possibly Investigator as secondary (terrible mechanically in the video game, but strong narratively and appropriate to Jubilost), Likely with dips into Ranger.
Valerie. Human.
Fighter, mainly. Some rogue and slayer levels. Much, much later, depending on the resolution of her personal quest, some paladin levels. Not of Shelyn.
Octavia. Half-Elf.
Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster, probably. Secondary, not sure. Pyschic may be fun.
Regongar. Half-Orc.
Magus primary. Rogue (Thug)/Slayer/Fighter levels with secondary.
These are characters that are present in the video game (with one exception that only exists in the pen-and-paper version), but not recruit-able as actual NPCs. (Some of them are recruitable in the PnP Adventure Path). Arguably spoilers.
Gozran 16. - Unloaded most of our battle trophies with Oleg; enough to buy a small bag of holding he carried. God, I missed these things! Just a hundred pounds or so, but makes a big difference. That's a hundred pounds more of treasure!
- Heading out with Minsc, Jaheira, Viconia, Aerie and our new friend, Linzi. Bittersweet to be leaving other friends again. Aerie was crying when she and Haer'Dalis parted. She's so strong…
- Svetlana (Oleg's wife) asked us to keep an eye out for her wedding ring taken by some bandits.
- She also asked us to show mercy to a particular bandit if we could, one wielding two axes. A personal connection? I made no promises, but we'll see.
- Bokken wants some "Fangberry" and "Moon Radishes", willing to pay well. Not something we'll go out of our way for, but we'll keep an eye out.
- Asked Jan to make some enlarging potions while we're gone; will be useful for later. (Minsc is a big fan). Cespenar says he's working on some armor. I couldn't be bothered to ask for details.
- Heading out toward "Thorn Ford". We'll see what happens on the way.
- Met an old man, name Remus, a bit south of Oleg's along the road. Seemed a bit loose in the noggin! But it would be crazy to dismiss the vaguely prophetic ramblings of seeming madmen, right? Seemed to know something about Tartuccio, the little traitor-gnome; pointed out a tomb where he (Tartuccio, that is) was allegedly headed. Bandits take priority over some tomb robbing, though, however distasteful it may be. Onward to the Thorn Forge.
- Evening. Thorn Ford, and likely bandit encampment, just ahead. May this not be my last entry!
~~~
Minsc whispered loudly (somehow?) to Boo as they made their way closer to the Ford, answering a question that no one else heard. "Yes, Boo, but I prefer the bright of day. Evil must be able to see the justice I dispense!"
Viconia was quick to respond, "So your rodent prefers the darkness, Minsc? It is good that at least one of you has sense."
Minsc, of course, took it in stride with a laugh "Yes, indeed! Boo has the sense! Minsc has the swords!"
Jaheira merely glared at both of them.
Drawing near, they padded toward the encampment, having to shush Linzi more than once. Imoen understood the excitement, truly she did, but there was a time for silence, and trying to sneak into a bandit encampment was definitely it!
The neared a cart and assortment of stolen goods. The most notable thing was a cache of fine-looking wine, labeled as being "for the Stag Lord!". After a whispered discussion, they resolved to...
[] Take It (+375 gp; some weight burden)
[] Poison It (???)
[] Destroy it
A bit later, Imoen scouted just a bit ahead of the rest of the group, keeping to the shadows as she'd mastered, once. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw them all, ready to charge into her aid. It was so strange, so frustrating, to know that you'd been a master at this, and to now merely be pretty good.
Well, pretty good seemed to be good enough in this case, as she slinked past a bandit watching from a tree blind.
It was an encampment, alright, perhaps ten bandits in total. And she overheard a very interesting conversation, indeed, between a tall and commanding man and another bandit, apparently called Kressle. Seems Kressle wanted to be more aggressive in their raids, but... Wait! Kressle was the same bandit who fled the encounter at Oleg's! And she was holding two axes. This must be the one that Svetlana was talking about.
Unfortunately, the man, Akiros, noticed Imoen and turned to speak to her. He was a fair speaker, true enough, talking about how the Stag Lord was as rightful a lord of these lands as any.
Imoen's friends had revealed themselves once she was noticed; weapons at the ready. Would it come to combat? Evidence of stolen goods and bloodstains left no doubt that at least some of the bandits here were murderers, and all were thieves. And not in the cheeky-and-charming-steal-from-the-rich way, either! She should know.
Imoen's response to Akiros,
[] (Lawful Good) Appealed to Akiros about the importance of justice and honor in a ruler, and how the Stag King lacked those qualities.
[] (Neutral Good) Appealed to Akiros based on the suffering and death of so many under the Stag King's "rule".
[] (Chaotic Good) Appealed to Akiros that the people deserved freedom from such a petty tyrant.
[Perception check passed] Imoen noticed a moment of hesitation in the manner of Akiros, but ultimately the bandit laughed her off, even if it seemed a bit forced. Turning to flee into the woods, Akiros dismissed her attempt to turn him against his "lord". Imoen quickly directed,
[] Everyone to remain here for the potentially challenging fight ahead
[] One (or two) of the party members to pursue the fleeing Akiros (write-in whom).
Meanwhile, Kressle seemed hesitant to attack. "So, how much of what you just spewed is bullshit?", she asked.
[] Write-In response.
Ultimately, Imoen was inclined more toward:
[] Killing the bandits, so they could do no more harm to the people of the Stolen Lands.
[] Fighting them, but granting clemency to those who ultimately surrendered
[] Letting them go, provided they were to abandon the Stag Lord.
[] Other (write-in)
Following This Encounter, however it turns out, Imoen's group will have reached level 3. Please see the next post for more on that!
More narration and character interaction will be given to this scene following the vote!
This post concerns level-up choices for our various NPCs. The previous post contains the story update and votes for story decisions. You are welcome to vote in one, or both, or neither. You are welcome to put all your votes in one post, or do a separate post for each.
They are separated mainly because moving forward "plan" voting is not allowed for level-up choices. Please feel free to continue to use "plan" voting for the story votes, if you wish to! If you do not want to make individual decisions for the level up choices, then that's fine! Just vote on the story part. There's no pressure to vote for both!
I can't and won't stop you from copy-pasting someone else's votes on character leveling. But I would prefer it if you only voted for character leveling if you were willing to think about each choice in turn. Or, just vote for the ones that you care about / want to think about, and leave the others "blank"! Thanks.
I am not at all familiar with the Pathfinder system, and I missed on playing the Kingmaker.
I remember Baldur's Gate and DnD 2.5 pretty well though, for all the good it does me for this playthrough.
Won't be able to weigh in often, and the character building doesn't interest me all that much, not when I don't know the difference between a good and a mediocre build.
First things first...
[x] Imoen Image One
It might be not the right style, but it is a better art. At the very least I would prefer it to remain our character's picture in this thread.
[x] (Neutral Good) Appealed to Akiros based on the suffering and death of so many under the Stag King's "rule".
Justice and honor are not necessary in a ruler. Even Edwin could make a decent governor if he saw personal profits in being seen as a benevolent figure.
Freedom from petty tyranny are big words for someone who doesn't know first thing about this world's politics and history.
Hence go with the facts we know, which is a pack of brigands collecting dues and the blood on the stolen merchandise.
[x] Poison It (???)
I'd go for something non-lethal. Like laxatives. Horrible for morale and combat-readiness, which serves our purposes well if we follow it through with an attack, but ultimately harmless given we don't know who gets to drink the vine. Being marked "for the Stag King" means it's his property, not necessarily his meal.
[x] One (or two) of the party members to pursue the fleeing Akiros (write-in whom).
-[x] Minsc and Viconia
Could have gone with Minsc and Aerie, but the latter is a bit of a glass cannon... even more so than Viconia is. At least the drow would keep an eye on the possibility of an ambush, something that Minsc is likely to overlook completely.
We may need Jaheira in case there are more coming, of if talking Kressle down doesn't pan out.
[x] You were in the group that barged in Oleg's tavern yesterday, trying to rob him. You tell me.
I don't know why we are wasting time with her given that she is the one who wants more aggressive raids. After trying to raid a place that seems to care for her well-being. What do you care for who gets in the way, Kressle?
Why does Svetlanna (two n's? I though it should be singular) even want her alive?
Eh, a quest is a quest. There better be a good reward for this at the end of the day!
[x] Fighting them, but granting clemency to those who ultimately surrendered
Hey, if they aren't two-bit thugs, we are always hiring! Please stand by, we'll give you the recruitment pitch after we wipe the blood of your current employer off our clothes.
[x] Minsc: Athletics
[x] Minsc: Improved Iron Will - Increasing saving throws against mental effects.
Minsc is not known for his Perception, and I like it to remain that way.
Neither is he good at DOOODGE.
[x] Viconia: Greater Spell Penetration: Increases ability to overcome the spell resistance of certain foes.
Tough call there. Viccy needs to toughen up, but diseases are not what I am worried about with this many divine spellcasters.
[x] Linzi: Extra Evolution I - One extra point in Eidolon's evolution pool.
[x] Linzi: Buffing Allies
[x] Aerie: Toughness
Spell Penetration goes to Viccy, so Aerie gets to be the tough one.
[x] Jaheira: Evolved Companion (better wolf) & Shield Brace (polearms with a shield).
Neither is Imoen! Some of those differences will, in fact, be part of the narrative of their power. The characters are not explicitly aware of things like "character levels" (I've never liked that in a story), but they are of course aware of the fact that they get more powerful, and some of the ways in which they do are different than they are used to. Like the fact that Minsc actually gets stronger (Strength increases) at certain tiers of power.
Pathfinder is very similar mechanically to D&D 3.5, if you ever played that.
Yes, this vote is not yet set in stone. By the time I post the next story update it will be finalized. Currently we are 50/50. Regardless, I don't plan to remove the image at the top of the thread. At most, I would add the other.
-[x] those who surrender shall swear fealty and start to make amends by returning what they stole and tasked with dangerous duties as a form of community service for a certain number of years, if they survive then they will be be given clemency and be allowed to live in peace or allowed to join the Militia or Guard. This is a plausible plan for an established ruler with an infrastructure of guards to oversee such "redemption". So I'll keep this in mind for the future, for sure.
For the moment, bear in mind that currently you are in the middle of wilderness, are not a ruler, and have no way of enforcing their future behavior without doing so yourself. That means that if they "swear fealty" and then you let them go, they can just flee the region and you can't plausibly stop them. Or, if you force them to come with you, you have potentially unreliable allies that could turn on you come combat. Or, finally, you could march them back to Oleg's and form a makeshift prison. Or some other option I'm not seeing. All of which have downsides.
There will be further votes on this, and your characters will have a chance to determine which of them seem sincere, but I just wanted to point out some of the present logistical issues.
Alright, how opposed is Imoen in using human shields? anyway, that is what we do to future bandits and armed lawbreakers, but for now, a holding area seems like a good idea since Val is there and Oleg's place is in a strategic location so fortifying it seems necessary.
I know you are joking but the answer is: very. There's no way Imoen would intentionally march prisoners in front just for the purpose of them being killed.
Arm them and give them the dangerous positions? Possibly, yeah. Knowingly march them to their intentional death? No. Imoen (at least at this point) believes that if you're going to kill someone, at least have the decency to do it cleanly, and don't make them anticipate it.
Character Level 3 Voting
In Terms of Skills, Imoen should prioritize:
[X] Imoen: Knowledge & Diplomacy
For her feats, Imoen is taking Improved Initiative, AND…
[X] Gestalt option doesn't mention dual feat progression, so no extra feats. Plus, Improved Initiative is simply good enough. But if you'd ask me, I'd spent a second feat slot on cool narrative Feats, that people rarely take. So, a Merciful Spell. Blast all day round guilt-free. I can look up some more.
Imoen has awoken another aspect of her divine blood. Pick One,
[X] Imoen: Slayer Senses: Darkvision (Useful Narratively) & Keen Senses (+2 bonus to Perception)
[X] Imoen: Divine Charisma: +1 Charisma (spellcasting)
Where do you take these Bhaalspawn trait ideas? I remember there was mechanic for that in one of the Dragon issues (I think).
The second post outlines the version of gestalt rules I'm using, if you're curious.
Try to think more about the narrative than the difficulty. Hard mode on this game gives enemies (+4 to all stats, and then an additional +2 to most things, for a net of +4 to enemies' attacks, ACs, plus a boatload more HP. "Unfair" mode (which I will switch to if think ever get easy) basically doubles those bonuses. There will be sufficient challenge, in terms of the combat.
I'm doing gestalt because it makes it more fun, for me, to build the characters. There is a narrative reason for it as well, but that won't be revealed until much, much later.
All that being said, nothing wrong with suggesting more 'fun' or narrative feats, like Merciful spell! If you have ideas like that, please share them, because I may then include them as options on future feat votes.
Imoen stirred the camp pot with one hand, idly waving her other hand to fan the flames of the fire with a bit of magic. Off to the side, Jaheira fed leftover bits of the rabbits that Minsc had caught to her wolf.
Imoen continued her thought, "... it's just... I mean, if you have to kill someone, and I'm not so naive as to think that you can always avoid that, do it cleanly, y'know? Quickly. None of this anticipation. I hate the idea of making someone linger around, waiting for a death they know is coming," she commented, half to herself, and half to Viconia. The other woman was sitting opposite, grooming her Owl familiar.
"So, stab them in the back with them none the wiser? And here I thought rivvin had no common sense," Viconia nearly smiled.
"That's not what I mean... well, I guess it sort of is. I'm not much for 'honor', I guess. If someone has to die, if there's not a good chance to make them turn around... I'd rather them not have to be afraid of it in advance. Maybe I'm not saying it right... But open challenges are a bit silly, that's true," she paused to add in a few of Jaheira's spices to the stew.
Linzi joined in, frowning, "That's not very heroic, though, is it? Stabbing people in the back? Knives in the dark? I guess it can still make for a good story..."
Imoen's face grew stony, and her hand reached to grasp at the necklace around her neck. The charm may have lost its magic since her brother had given it to her, but it still carried its meaning. "Maybe not, but I've learned what trying to play storybook hero gets you..."
An awkward silence fell. Soon, though, Minsc returned to the camp with another rabbit, allowing a change of subject...
"That's not what I mean... well, I guess it sort of is. I'm not much for 'honor', I guess. If someone has to die, if there's not a good chance to make them turn around... I'd rather them not have to be afraid of it in advance. Maybe I'm not saying it right... But open challenges are a bit silly, that's true," she paused to add in a few of Jaheira's spices to the stew.
"Open challenges are more of a statement. Sometimes a moral one, however misguided. A political more often, than not.
If you want your statement to be powerful, you must be seen and heard...
"Open challenges are more of a statement. Sometimes a moral one, however misguided. A political more often, than not.
If you want your statement to be powerful, you must be seen and heard...
The stew was excellent; Imoen had a chef's touch (naturally!). ...Admittedly, it had taken a lot of burnt attempts and lectures from Jaheira... and Khalid's gentle instruction... Khalid.
Across the fire, Minsc was grooming Boo, his huge fingers possessed of uncanny dexterity as they picked bits of dirt from behind Boo's ears. To the side, Jaheira leaned against a tree, staring upward at the unfamiliar night sky.
"Open challenges are more of a statement." Viconia spoke to her suddenly, quietly, intently. Imoen hadn't even noticed her sit down. Somehow Viconia made even sitting on the grass seem elegant.
It took a second for Imoen to remember the earlier conversation, and by the time she had Viconia was continuing.
"Sometimes a moral one... however misguided. More often than not, a political one. If you want your statement to be powerful, you must be seen and heard."
Imoen was sure there was significance to the emphasis; there always was with Viconia. To be seen, was for others to take note of you. To be heard, was for them to give you respect after they had done so. A statement, then, must have both to have impact. It was, of course, obvious when you put it that way.
Imoen replied softly, "To make a death into a statement... I can understand the use, of course, but... it's so cold. And so appealing. Too appealing." Her eyes stared at her own hands, cleaned of bloodstains new and old.
Viconia narrowed her eyes, "You are the master of your blood, Imoen. You have proven that time and again. Your will is iron. Bend your power to your purpose." It was both advice, and a command, at once.
"Challenges are risks, too, aren't they? I've certainly not won every fight I've been in."
Viconia replied, "You should not be foolish in your challenges, of course. Stack the deck, if you must, provided others do not know that you have done so. Challenge only when you are confident in your victory. Then crush them utterly for all to see. This is victory, Imoen. This is power. It matters not the end; I respect your nobility far more than I once did, but idealism will get you nowhere. If you want to save people, if you want to help them, you must have power. You know this to be true."
Imoen did not respond for a long time, staring at the night sky, as Jaheira did. Khalid had enjoyed pointing out the constellations, and telling their stories around the campfire. Was Jaheira thinking about that as well? Grieving the loss of even the stars that had been a testament to his memory? She looked across and saw Jaheira looking at her now, giving her a sad and understanding smile. Who was Imoen to cry still over Khalid, when the wife he left behind could be so strong?
"Khalid once told me," she finally replied to Viconia, "that power should not be used needlessly. He was one of the greatest fighters I ever met, but never sought conflict. Others called him a coward, and a fool. He fought when he had to, but only when he had to," she paused. "I don't know if I can emulate him in that, not fully. But I won't cause pain in order to be powerful. I won't kill just because it will bring me respect."
Viconia frowned, "Then you are still a bit of a fool, but that is nothing new. Consider this, then, at least: if you are going to kill someone regardless, and in doing so can create respect, what is the loss in doing so?"
For that, Imoen had no answer. She stared into the stars for a long time that night, but Khalid did not answer her either.
A note on "combinations". When votes are not clear-cut (as in a case of a two-to-three for this vote for attitude toward the bandits, for example), and both options do not contradict each other, I will sometimes opt to combine them narratively. Please feel free to give me your opinion on the result once I have posted the next update.
Does Pathfinder have equivalents to Detect Alignment and Discern Lies/Lie Detection from DnD?
I imagine this would significantly expedite the process of dealing with the potential bandit hires, as outright subversive elements would be easy to notice, and a common bandit would have no access to countermeasures to hide their motives/actions.
* Detect Evil, while a 1st level spell, does not register alignment of creatures unless one of the following is true
- They have at least five levels/hit dice
- They are a Cleric/Paladin of an aligned deity
- They are undead, or an outsider.
None of which apply to these enemies.
* Discern Lies is a 4th level spell, and thus will not be available for a long time. To what extent you make use of it as a ruler in the future may come up as a vote later on.
