Imoen and ten companions find themselves stranded on Golarion, in the country of Brevoy. Trying to get back home, they may just end up founding a kingdom on the way.
Chapter 1: Off to Oleg's!
Location
USA
Imoen, Leader of the Silver Star Expeditionary Guild
Future Queen of the Stolen Lands

The conceit is: The PC Protagonist of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 died earlier on in a very permanent way, and Imoen (his half-sister, sharing divine blood) took his place through most of the narrative. She, along with nine companions and one imp butler (because in narrative, you're not limited to a six person party) found themselves ported to Golarion (the main Pathfinder RPG world) shortly before the events of Pathfinder: Kingmaker. They found themselves level one, and their gear stripped of all magic.

Half a year later, they've gotten themselves a foothold (and achieved level two). Imoen, in Episode 1 just below, sits in on the pitch that begins the Pathfinder: Kingmaker video game. The player in the game is charged with ridding the Stolen Lands of a Bandit King, and establishing a kingdom. Many more enemies (of course) appear along the way.

So, it's a bit of a mash-up. I will be playing through the computer game as we go through. But because it has many non-linear aspects, and many impactful choices for the kingdom, there is a lot of room for audience input. Some of that input will affect what part of the game I play next.

I will NOT strictly bind myself to the limits of the video game. I will pull in aspects from the written Adventure Path, and happily explore unique ideas offered by the readers. (There just won't be screenshots for things not in the video game). In the video game, when a bad guy auto-escapes because of plot-device, that auto-escape may not happen in this story.

Most of the "action" will follow the main adventuring party of Imoen, but there will be other allied parties operating in the background. At one point there will be 20+ friendly and powerful NPCs doing various things.

As the name "Kingmaker" hints, this is not just about adventuring, but about truly establishing a kingdom. There will be combat, and there will be statecraft. (As a for-instance, should Jaheira or Anomen hold the position of regent? What about chief diplomat? Both Baldur's Gate 2 and Kingmaker NPCs will be involved.

Not every choice will be allowed; there will be few write-ins. Imoen and her friends are heroes and they will remain heroic, even if some pragmatism may creep in. This is the story of their heroism, that you are helping me tell.

There will not be a lot of detailed description of combat; major combats will be described somewhat, but in most cases they will be summarized, or dealt with after-the-fact.

Character builds will not be explicitly voted upon, but I will certainly consider good input and ideas.

Imoen glanced around the grand hall of Jamandi Aldori, in the city of Restov, taking in the myriad faces (most in need of a good wash) milling about. There were perhaps four dozen, all (she assumed) here for the same reason she was: the interesting announcement by Swordlord Aldori, concerning a great task with just as great a reward. Most betrayed the impatience of the young and foolhardy, as they all waited for the appearance of their host. A few, like herself, wore placid masks of seemingly infinite patience. Her mask was hard-earned, and she marked the others who had donned similar.

Well… "grand" hall. She'd certainly seen grander. It had nothing on Suldanessellar, or many of the manors of Baldur's Gate or Athkatla. Still, it was one of the grander she'd seen since they wound up… here. Here in this strange world of strange gods. Stripped of most of their power, and all of their belongings, they'd stuck together and managed to do alright. Taking odd protection jobs and bounty hunting options, they'd… survived. Scrapped up enough for some decent equipment and lodgings. Still quite a fall. At least she still had her soul.

Imoen was here by herself at the moment, following a promising lead. Jaheira, Minsc, Edwin, Haer'Dalis and Mazzy had headed west on a paid escort mission with some merchants to Pitax. Viconia, Aerie, Jan and Cespenar (as creepily servile to her as ever) were laying low in their rented town-home, trying to get a grasp on the "intricacies of local magics", she was told. Magic seemed to work just fine, so she wasn't sure why they were so keen on it. It wasn't like she wasn't curious. Of course she was curious! Why did they all speak the local language? Why did divine magic work without the presence of the same gods!? But none of that was going to get them home, now was it?

Anomen was… she wasn't sure, actually. Somewhere in the city, probably socializing, trying to get out the "word" about their adventuring company. The "Silver Star Expeditionary Guild" they'd gone with. Their members: eleven. Eleven people who did not belong on this world. Eleven people who wanted to go home. Well, ten. She didn't think Cespenar really cared, but he would help her reach her goals.

Imoen glanced over at a spat taking place between a strong-looking barbarian (Kellid, she corrected herself) woman, and a… purple Gnome. Still strange, how Gnomes here were all the colors of the earth. She simply observed, as the woman loudly grumbled her impatience, before exchanging nasty insults with the Gnome. Heh. "Purple little toad".

At last, their host strode onto the stage, along with the mayor of Restov (Ioseph Sellemius, she recognized him). Silence fell, and all turned their attention to the stage.

Introductions were made, and the Swordlord laid out the task before them. The Stolen Lands, a vast swath of the River Kingdoms to the south, were overrun with bandits led by The Stag King (Imoen had heard of him; that's why Jaheira and the others had been hired as guards, actually). It was desired that a team of adventurous sorts (the milling crowd) would clear them out, and a new barony would be founded as reward. Perhaps even to become a kingdom?

Imoen remained silent as a few obvious questions were asked. How would they determine who would rule the new kingdom? The answer: that they should decide amongst themselves. She couldn't help but snort quietly. Perhaps it was the intent of Jamandi that they would mostly kill each other off afterward, and thus she'd have fewer to reward? Still, "decide amongst yourselves" was not a promising recipe.

Still… she wasn't un-interested. Could be some good treasure, badly needed funds to pay for what they needed. And if the Silver Star ended up getting a Barony? Well, a Barony meant being able to talk to important people who would otherwise ignore you. Important people who might know powerful people who might know how to cross worlds.

Questions continued for a while, and all who were interested were welcome to stay the night. Most stayed. Imoen talked a bit with some of the others. The Kellid woman was called Amiri, and seemed to think of nothing but fighting; after knowing Minsc, though, Imoen would not dismiss her out of hand. A halfling bard named Linzi was charming and tried to latch onto her, and Imoen spent a bit being buoyed by her cheer. Harrim, a dreary dwarf (dreary even for a dwarf, she corrected herself) muttered to himself about pointlessness? Why was he here, then? There was Kaessi, a non-committal Tiefling. She reminded Imoen of Haer'Dalis. Not just because of both having infernal natures; it was her irreverent attitude. The final one she noticed was called Jaethal, a dark haired, pale-skinned elven woman, whose presence disturbed Imoen for reasons she couldn't quite pin down.

As the evening wound down, some drinks were shared, but eventually they retired to their chambers…

~~~---~~~
~~~---~~~

Damn it,
Imoen thought, ducking behind a bookcase as an arrow went past. This was supposed to be one of the most secure places in the city! How in the hells were they under assault? (A brief nonsensical thought passed her mind: were there still nine hells in this world?)

She'd been awoken in the middle of the night by Linzi, who ran into her room hollering up a storm. Imoen, no stranger to night-time attacks, was sleeping fully dressed, and simply grabbed her bow and bandolier from next to the bed. The mansion was under assault, by… bandits? Assassins? Unclear. But they were definitely trying to kill her. The arrows were proof enough of that.

Continuing to fight down the hall, Imoen put arrows through several, stopping to swig a health potion for the ones who got her in turn. Linzi wasn't a bad shot with that bow, either! Imoen would guess she was keeping her magic in reserve for now; smart.

Soon enough they rescued the purple Gnome (Tartuccio) who was, apparently, a stranger to gratitude. Ah, well. Hopefully he had some useful tricks up his sleeve. Fighting their way past another group of invaders, they encountered Amiri (the Kellid) finishing off a foe herself, shouting and consumed in her rage. Amiri forcibly calmed herself after spotting them, but ran onward (presumably after more foes).

Next was Jaethal, who joined up with them, revealing her nature in the process. Undead. Imoen grimaced. Bodhi… no. No, not now. This was not the time. Accept Jaethal's help, keep an eye on her, move on. Needs must. Imoen eyed the fallen guards and invaders again. Needs must.

They wound their way past some traps (a magically automated defense system, Imoen assumed), into a large garden hall, felling some more invaders, and stopping to quaff a few potions between them. Kaessi stopped to greet them in between roasting an intruder with fire, and here, too, they found Harrim (the dwarf) who joined their assembled group, picking himself up off the floor with… well, 'aplomb' would be too generous.

Imoen led the way quickly through a burning room (saving some soldiers in the process). Valerie, one of the Swordlord's personal guards, helped with the latter, and joined them in the final push to the main hall, where the sound of combat rang out.

Running through the doorway, Imoen stopped at the sight, just for a moment. Swordlord Jamandi was locked in combat with what could only be a Frost Giant, both encircled in a field of magical force. Around that, a team of the invaders looked on, having just finished off some of the loyal guardsmen. Moment over, Imoen began firing off arrows.

Beside her, she heard Linzi incant (Grease, Imoen immediately recognized), and a swath of the assassins fell slipping to the floor. Nicely done. Soon after Linzi began chanting in the oh-too-familiar way that brought courage to Imoen's heart.

Meanwhile, Harrim blessed the lot of them, while Valerie and Jaethal charged to the front of battle. Tartuccio began whipping out magic missiles at choice targets.

The enemy had a notable caster among them, and it was a grueling fight. Valerie fell, as did Linzi toward the end, but they were able to save both after the last of the enemy was dispatched.

In the meantime, Swordlord Jamandi had (impressively) finished off the giant herself; the field dissipated, and she turned to greet them…

~~~---~~~
Walking all day still sucked, Imoen decided. Adventuring had too much walking, too much near-death, and not enough treasure. She was going to write to someone, definitely!
She was on her way to "Oleg's Trading Post". Accompanying her from the mansion were Amiri, Linzi and Valerie, who'd all declared Imoen to be a fit leader (for some reason). Another team, comprised of Tartuccio, Harrim and Jaethal (good riddance on the first and last, frankly) had headed out in another direction.
It had been revealed that someone had opened the gates of the mansion from the inside, last night. Jamandi, not able to be certain who the traitor was, had elected to send out two separate teams, in the hope that one would discharge their duty. (Imoen, thinking of Tartuccio's attempts to frame her in conversation with Jamandi, knew that it was the gnome that was the traitor, but she could appreciate that Jamandi could not be certain).
She was also relieved to have some of her friends with her again.
Anomen, as he walked, was chatting comfortably with Valerie about the local nobility and the ongoing tensions of war. Aldori and Surtova. Imoen didn't much care, though she supposed she was nominally on the Aldori side of things given the current assignment. It was nice to see the animation in Anomen; he'd been growing a bit listless.
Jan and Aerie were nattering on about some magical theory that Imoen almost-but-not-quite followed. It was in these conversations that Aerie's confidence, greatly grown due to the trials they shared in… their world, shone the brightest. The two of them had been welcomed by all, though Amiri was clearly not impressed by their unimposing physiques. Jan had, a bit earlier, also taken advantage of a new audience for his outlandish stories of turnip-related mischief. Imoen had to stifle a grin as he confounded Valerie with such a tale. (Linzi seemed to take notes about it, which was… odd).
Viconia, on the other hand… Linzi was friendly enough, and Amiri did not much care, but Valerie had practically demanded to know why a dark elf would be traveling with them. Well, it wasn't like it was new to them, and Viconia took it in stride. 99% of her people were pretty murderous; Imoen's time in the underdark could attest. Valerie was satisfied eventually, and Viconia walked separately, muttering in her tongue (some of which Imoen had picked up) about the "foolishness of rivven".
Cespenar was with them, too, but invisible. A power that he'd retained. Better to not have to explain why they had a friendly imp with them.
In addition to all that, if the timing was right, Jaheira, Minsc, Edwin, Haer'Dalis and Mazzy should be coming through the same trading post in the next day or two. They'd all be in the same place for the first time in a while, and they'd decide how best to tackle this little "Stag Lord" problem…
First Vote.
Imoen is a Sorcerer/Rogue, focused on archery for the moment. She has high Dexterity and Charisma.
Imoen will soon have access to the following friendly NPCs.
  • Minsc - Impossibly Loyal Rashemeni Berserker. Barbarian/Ranger. High Strength and Constitution. Pet miniature giant space hamster. Neutral Good Alignment.
  • Jaheira - No-nonsense woman. Half-Elf. Druid/Fighter. Closest living person to Imoen (emotionally). Neutral Alignment. High Wisdom & Strength.
  • Edwin Odesseiron - Arrogant Red Wizard / Alchemist, who has grown attached to Imoen and some of the others, against his best judgment. Lawful Evil / Lawful Neutral borderline alignment. (He's getting better).
  • Mazzy Fentan - Halfling Paladin / Fighter / Rogue blend. High Dexterity and Charisma. Probably the noblest member of the company, Mazzy is pure of heart but without a drop of naivety. Lawful Good.
  • Haer'Dalis - Bard / Slayer. High Dexterity and Charisma. Tiefling. Haer'Dalis is whimsical but wise. He refuses to take life too seriously, and enjoys the time with his friends. Chaotic Neutral. Current romantic relationship with Aerie.
  • Aerie - Wizard / Cleric. Lawful Good. High Wisdom and Intelligence. Aerie is a once-mega-shy elf who has grown into her confidence and power... most of the time.
  • Viconia DeVir - Cleric / Witch. Drow. Viconia is a refuge from Drow society, but not due to any inherent noble nature. She has warmed slightly to present company. Neutral Evil / Neutral. High Wisdom and Intelligence.
  • Jan Jansen - Wizard / Rogue / Alchemist blend. Gnome. Jan is... perhaps insane? Certainly eccentric. Likes to invent things. High Dexterity and Intelligence. Chaotic Neutral.
  • Anomen - Paladin / Cleric / Fighter blend. [This is the passed-his-test version of Anomen, for those in the know]. A formerly self-righteous prick, Anomen has now matured quite a bit into someone full of respect for others, as well as himself. He still holds himself and others to a high standard at times. Lawful Good. High stength, charisma, wisdom.
  • Cespenar - A powerful imp-like being who served Imoen's divine father, and now serves her. Not viable as a party member, Cespenar nonetheless will be very helpful behind the scenes, especially in crafting items.
From Kingmaker:
  • Valerie - A former paladin of Shelyn, now turned away from the divine path to focus or her martial strength. Perhaps she'll find her way back to Paladin-hood under a deity more suited to her? For now, Fighter/Slayer blend. Lawful Neutral.
  • Linzi - A halfling bard/rogue determined to write your story! She is certain she's in the presence of greatness.
  • Amiri - Barbarian/Ranger looking for glorious battle. She's decided that Imoen is a strong leader.u
Of the twelve possible companions (not counting Cespenar) Imoen must select five to be on her expeditionary team. Of those remaining, a second expeditionary team will form to scout out other locations, with perhaps one or two people remaining at "base" for support.
I do not promise to pick the top five voted for characters; party balance must be considered. The top three voted for will get in for sure, though.
Pick FIVE:
[] Minsc
[] Jaheira
[] Edwin
[] Mazzy
[] Haer'Dalis
[] Aerie
[] Viconia
[] Jan
[] Anomen
[] Valerie
[] Linzi
[] Amiri
I had the idea to play this game with these crossover characters for my own sake. Whether or not I continue posting in this quest will depend on the level of interest. If it is very low/nonexistent, I'll still enjoy the game and narrative on my own :)
Realistically, this will likely not be a more than once-a-week thing (it's taken me 6-7 hours, including the game play and pictures, to create this post).
If you're interested in reading, but not interested in this vote, then say that please!
Imoen and company arrived at Oleg's near nightfall; it was a well fortified outpost with a strong wooden wall surrounding. Unfortunately, a group of bandits had arrived before them, speaking threateningly toward what was presumably the man in charge of the place - Oleg Leveton himself. Imoen wondered whether he just left the gates open all the time? What was the point of the wall, exactly?
"In the name of the Stag Lord, the - haha! - 'lawful' authority in the Stolen Lands, we demand this week's tax! And some beer," one of them demanded with a swagger.
Well, this would not do at all. She approached, and opened her mouth to say something, only to have Amiri charge toward one of them, screaming, stupidly-huge sword raised. Sigh. Well, the course was set.
~~~
Not one, but two bandit attacks, and several hours later, the group of them sat inside Oleg's tavern, bandaging their wounds with the aid of Oleg's wife Svetlana, as well as the magic of Anomen, Viconia and Aerie. It was a blessing to have so many healers, to be sure. None of those here would bear any lasting injury.

"Haha, did you see the face on the one with the crooked nose when I took his arm off!," crowed Amiri, not for the first time. She seemed to be riding the high of the battle still, unconcerned about her wounds.

Linzi's face was a mixture of excitement, adrenaline and nausea. Imoen didn't think Linzi had actually seen much violence before. Perhaps Jamandi's mansion had been her first kill? Something to talk about when they had some privacy.

"It is not seemly to dwell on a bloodbath. Still, you were impressive, Amiri," allowed Valerie, who'd been mostly unscathed in spite of bravely drawing the attacks of many of the bandits. She was definitely good at not being hurt, though her sword skills were only mediocre, in Imoen's opinion.

Anomen and Viconia spoke quietly on the other side of the room. It was remarkable how far Anomen had come in overcoming his prejudice. Imoen still clearly remembered when he'd refused to even speak to the Drow; now he was just a bit stiff around her. Viconia wasn't... Good, exactly. Well, not at all. But she wasn't Bad either. At least, Imoen didn't think so. She'd gotten better, too. It was impressive to be able to come back from such darkness as she'd endured... Not something to dwell on right now, though.

Jan and Bokken (an alchemist operating out of the trading post) were having a conversation about alchemical reagents that Imoen could not follow. She was clever, she knew that. Smarter than the average waif, to be sure! But there was clever, and there was genius. Best to leave the eggheads to their fun!

Aerie was outside, giving a prayer for the bandits. She'd been insistent on burying them, though the rest of the group had drawn the line at individual graves. So, one big hole outside the wall later, with the aid of both muscle and magic, and in they went (after stripping them of anything of value, of course; they weren't new to this business!). Aerie was a kind soul. Fierce, when necessary, but her view was that most bandits were driven to it by the "inescapable chains of fate", and the least that could be done for them was some last rites. Imoen could understand that, though Amiri had mocked her a bit for her weakness. Heh. Aerie had been mocked by far worse, and stood tall.

A quick celebratory meal later, and after helping Oleg close the gates (gods!), it was time for a well earned rest.

~~~
Imoen awoke to a noise and strange site. A... nymph? Half translucent sat floating in the middle of the room.
A dream? No, Imoen had enough experiences with the dreams brought on by her blood to know that she was awake.
The nymph spoke, asking for help, and so Imoen asked the natural question.
A strange fog in the woods? Some mysterious cabin? Imoen had seen enough not to trust a pretty nymph by default, but it was a strange sort of lie to tell. Regardless, it was a good lead to follow; they'd just have to be wary of traps. She'd had to kill nymphs before...
No reason for hostility now, though. A pleasantly neutral farewell, and it was time for the rest of that sleep...
~~~
The next day brought the remainder of her friends, back from their (paid!) mission.

Mazzy, striding taller than her stature (as always), was the first to greet them through the gates. "What, ho, noble friends! It warms my heart to see you," she said, clasping Imoen's hand between hers.

Minsc was only a moment behind. "Haha! Minsc and Boo did not expect to see their friends here! What a glorious day!"

Edwin merely gave her a slight nod and look of curiosity, before he (mumbling to himself) headed directly inside the tavern. He looked exhausted. (Probably partly from Mazzy & Minsc's enthusiasm)

Jaheira, striding just behind, enveloped her in a hug, Imoen wrinkling her nose at the stink of the road. "Jaheira! You need a bath!" Imoen said playfully, pushing her off.

Jaheira looked at her consideringly, and nodded. "Perhaps. It has been a long journey. Why are you here, though? I thought you to be gallivanting in Restov, still. Perhaps playing the flirt with some nobleman, hm?"

Off to the side, she saw that Haer'Dalis and Aerie were having a rather... heated reunion. Er... she averted her eyes back to Jaheira.

"Well, there's a lot to tell..."

~~~
Jaheira & co.'s job had been apparently uneventful, with only one wolf attack the entire way.
Imoen noticed Amiri & Minsc discussing swords and the use thereof in excited, loud voices. It was clear that Minsc was impressed by her stupidly large blade. She even let him hold it for a moment, which was... surprising. It was good to see Minsc making more friends, though it always came easily to his honest, open nature. She overheard him relaying one of his favorite 'sayings', "Live by the sword... live a good, long time!", to which Amiri laughed approvingly.
Jan & Bokken continued their Alchemy huddle seemingly unbroken. Had they slept? Probably. Not her problem right now. Where was Cespenar anyway? Was that a bad thing that she didn't know. So much was going on...
Haer'Dalis and Aerie were nowhere to be seen; no one begrudged their absence.
The rest spent the day resting, talking, strategizing.
It was agreed by most that it was a quest worthy of undertaking, though each may have had slightly differing reasons. Edwin for example, it was no secret, was primarily interested in regaining his magical power as quickly as possible, and the best way to do that was practice ("preferably on moving targets", in his words). Mazzy and Anomen were motivated by the righteousness of the cause. All of them, though, were motivated by the promise of rewards, and the agreement that it might be a good path to gain the clout needed to broaden their social circle.
Eventually it was agreed that they would split into two expeditionary groups.
The first, led by Imoen and Jaheira, would consist of Minsc, Linzi, Viconia and Aerie. They would head out the next morning, to...
Pick ONE
[] Head as directly toward the Thorn Ford as possible (the bandit encampment that was indicated by the vision of the Nymph)
[] Explore the area to get a better lay of the land
The second, led by Mazzy and Anomen, would bring Amiri, Edwin and Haer'Dalis. They would leave a day later, partly because Edwin refused to leave without "48 hours free of trampling about", and for the next week would prioritize...
Pick TWO
[] Getting a lay of the land (at least one random location revealed)
[] Speaking with the farmers and settlers who lived on the land, and protecting them (+1 Loyalty and +1 Community for future kingdom)
[] Hunting for monsters to eliminate. (+500 gold, 50% chance of a minor magical item, not beyond a +1 weapon or armor, 10% chance of more significant item)
[] Seeking out information on bandit activity (Narrative benefits; may result in additional choices)
(In addition to the above, the secondary party will earn 500 gold from treasures/random encounters)
Valerie and Jan elected to remain behind. The former to help protect against further attacks. The latter for ostensibly the same reason, but actually because (Imoen knew) he wanted to experiment with some new ideas he'd picked up from Bokken.
~~~
In addition to the narrative choices above, here are some options for your input on specifics of the builds of the characters accompanying Imoen. In all cases below, the first option given will win ties. If you don't want to vote on this part, no worries!

Jaheira
Strength 17, Dexterity 14, Constitution 16, Intelligence 12, Wisdom 17, Charisma 13

Jaheira's primary class is Druid. She has secondary class levels in Fighter (Drill Sergeant archetype). She will (eventually) have secondary class levels in Inquisitor, Hinterlander, and Ranger as well.

Druid Archetype:
[] Jaheira: Nature Fang - Gains studied target bonuses and combat talents
+ Jaheira will remain a strong melee fighter well into high levels.
+ Variety of martial combat additions
- Loses wildshape Feature, which has a lot of versatility.
[] Jaheira: Defender of the True World - Gains bonuses for animal companion and summons against fey.
+ Jaheira's animal companion and summons will be more effective, and remain effective against fey.
- At higher levels, will be much less effective at direct attacks; will lean more on spells and summons.
* No changes to wildshape.

Animal Companion or Domain:
[] Jaheira: Animal Companion - What it says on the tin.
[] Jaheira: Domain - Extra powers/spells related to an aspect of nature.

IF Animal Companion wins, she should have a:
[] Jaheira: Elk - Tougher, more majestic.
[] Jaheira: Wolf - Pack oriented, Better at tripping things.

Minsc
Strength 20, Dexterity 14, Constitution 19, Intelligence 7, Wisdom 14, Charisma 13

Minsc's primary class is Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager archetype). He has secondary class levels in Ranger. He will eventually have secondary class levels in Hunter, as well.

Ranger Archetype:
[] Minsc: Blood Hunter
+ Excellent bonuses that apply to all enemy types and terrains, all the time, rather than having to "specialize" in specific favored terrains or enemies.
+ Overall the most combat-capable, and skill-oriented, Ranger archetype by far.
- No spellcasting at all. (Perhaps appropriate for Minsc?)
[] Minsc: No Archetype
+ Good against specific types of enemies / in specific terrains
* Standard spellcasting.
[] Minsc: Freebooter
+ Gives bonuses to the entire party against a targeted enemy.
- Weakest archetype in terms of the Ranger's personal power/skill.
* Standard spellcasting.

Linzi
Strength 8, Dexterity 18, Constitution 16, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 12, Charisma 19

Linzi's primary class is Bard (No Archetype).

Linzi's secondary class(es) are:
[] Linzi: Rogue/Fighter. Much, much later dip Paladin (of Shelyn). I don't roll with that 'Lawful' restriction when the story demands crossover with Linzi/Valerie storylines.
+ Linzi will remain an effective archer.
+ Better saves, hit points and general survivability.
+ All around superior skill-monkey.
[] Linzi: Summoner
+ Extra summoning creatures ability.
+ Twice the spells available (both Bard and Summoner).
+ Nifty Eidolon companion
- Linzi will be fairly ineffective as an archer/physical combatant after the first handful of levels.
- Fairly fragile.

Viconia
Strength 10, Dexterity 18, Constitution 12, Intelligence 16, Wisdom 17, Charisma 14 OR
Strength 12, Dexterity 19, Constitution 12, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 17, Charisma 14, depending on choice below.

Viconia's primary class is Cleric. She has taken up the worship of Nethys here on Golarion (having never been particularly loyal to Shar).

Viconia's main secondary classes should be chosen to:
[] Viconia: Make her a more versatile and effective magic user/debuffer. [Witch]
+ Hex abilities to use when not casting spells
+ Much broader casting base and spell slots available
- Fragile & utterly ineffective at melee combat. Only barely decent with a bow, and only at first.
[] Viconia: Make her a more versatile and effective melee combatant. [Rogue & Fighter]
+ Can leverage her high dexterity to make her an effective dex-fighter.
+ Best overall direct damage dealer of the three options.
[] Viconia: A balance between both [Inquisitor]
+ Judgment ability provides good versatility.
+ "Solo Tactics" gives many combat options
- Spell selection is largely redundant with Cleric (but still get extra uses/slots)

Aerie
Strength 10, Dexterity 17, Constitution 12, Intelligence 18, Wisdom 17, Charisma 14
Aerie's primary classes are Cleric (Ecclesitheurge archetype) & Wizard.

Her wizard specialty should be:
[] Aerie: Abjuration
- Oriented toward protective magics, banishing outsiders and dispelling magic.
[] Aerie: Illusion
- Oriented toward invisibility, illusory attacks and tricking foes.
[] Aerie: Divination
- Oriented toward foreseeing the future and predicting paths.
(The choice here will also have narrative impact on Aerie's research far in the future of this quest)

Imoen
Strength 10, Dexterity 19, Constitution 14, Intelligence 15, Wisdom 12, Charisma 19

Imoen's primary classes are Rogue (Ninja archetype) & Sorcerer (Seeker archetype, with Celestial bloodline). She will later take the Arcane Trickster prestige class, and dip into other classes as well.

Select TWO of the following aspects that represent benefits that have (re)manifested from her divine blood. Additional choices will be available as she levels.

[] Imoen: Divine Protection, Lesser: +1 AC (all types)
[] Imoen: Divine Grace, Lesser: +1 to all saves
[] Imoen: Slayer Senses: Darkvision (Useful Narratively) & Keen Senses (+2 bonus to Perception)
[] Imoen: Slayer Strike: +1 attack
[] Imoen: Slayer Speed, Lesser: +5 movement speed
[] Imoen: Slayer Dexterity: +1 Dexterity (Attack rolls, AC, reflex saves)
[] Imoen: Divine Charisma: +1 Charisma (spellcasting)

Chapter 3: Conflict at Thorn Ford!
Chapter 3: Conflict At Thorn Ford

Gozran 16.
- Unloaded most of our battle trophies with Oleg; enough to buy a small bag of holding he carried. God, I missed these things! Just a hundred pounds or so, but makes a big difference. That's a hundred pounds more of treasure!
- Heading out with Minsc, Jaheira, Viconia, Aerie and our new friend, Linzi. Bittersweet to be leaving other friends again. Aerie was crying when she and Haer'Dalis parted. She's so strong…
- Svetlana (Oleg's wife) asked us to keep an eye out for her wedding ring taken by some bandits.
- She also asked us to show mercy to a particular bandit if we could, one wielding two axes. A personal connection? I made no promises, but we'll see.
- Bokken wants some "Fangberry" and "Moon Radishes", willing to pay well. Not something we'll go out of our way for, but we'll keep an eye out.
- Asked Jan to make some enlarging potions while we're gone; will be useful for later. (Minsc is a big fan). Cespenar says he's working on some armor. I couldn't be bothered to ask for details.
- Heading out toward "Thorn Ford". We'll see what happens on the way.
- Met an old man, name Remus, a bit south of Oleg's along the road. Seemed a bit loose in the noggin! But it would be crazy to dismiss the vaguely prophetic ramblings of seeming madmen, right? Seemed to know something about Tartuccio, the little traitor-gnome; pointed out a tomb where he (Tartuccio, that is) was allegedly headed. Bandits take priority over some tomb robbing, though, however distasteful it may be. Onward to the Thorn Forge.

- Evening. Thorn Ford, and likely bandit encampment, just ahead. May this not be my last entry!

~~~
Minsc whispered loudly (somehow?) to Boo as they made their way closer to the Ford, answering a question that no one else heard. "Yes, Boo, but I prefer the bright of day. Evil must be able to see the justice I dispense!"
Viconia was quick to respond, "So your rodent prefers the darkness, Minsc? It is good that at least one of you has sense."
Minsc, of course, took it in stride with a laugh "Yes, indeed! Boo has the sense! Minsc has the swords!"
Jaheira merely glared at both of them.
Drawing near, they padded toward the encampment, having to shush Linzi more than once. Imoen understood the excitement, truly she did, but there was a time for silence, and trying to sneak into a bandit encampment was definitely it!
The neared a cart and assortment of stolen goods. The most notable thing was a cache of fine-looking wine, labeled as being "for the Stag Lord!". After a whispered discussion, they resolved to...
[] Take It (+375 gp; some weight burden)
[] Poison It (???)
[] Destroy it
A bit later, Imoen scouted just a bit ahead of the rest of the group, keeping to the shadows as she'd mastered, once. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw them all, ready to charge into her aid. It was so strange, so frustrating, to know that you'd been a master at this, and to now merely be pretty good.
Well, pretty good seemed to be good enough in this case, as she slinked past a bandit watching from a tree blind.
It was an encampment, alright, perhaps ten bandits in total. And she overheard a very interesting conversation, indeed, between a tall and commanding man and another bandit, apparently called Kressle. Seems Kressle wanted to be more aggressive in their raids, but... Wait! Kressle was the same bandit who fled the encounter at Oleg's! And she was holding two axes. This must be the one that Svetlana was talking about.
Unfortunately, the man, Akiros, noticed Imoen and turned to speak to her. He was a fair speaker, true enough, talking about how the Stag Lord was as rightful a lord of these lands as any.
Imoen's friends had revealed themselves once she was noticed; weapons at the ready. Would it come to combat? Evidence of stolen goods and bloodstains left no doubt that at least some of the bandits here were murderers, and all were thieves. And not in the cheeky-and-charming-steal-from-the-rich way, either! She should know.
Imoen's response to Akiros,
[] (Lawful Good) Appealed to Akiros about the importance of justice and honor in a ruler, and how the Stag King lacked those qualities.
[] (Neutral Good) Appealed to Akiros based on the suffering and death of so many under the Stag King's "rule".
[] (Chaotic Good) Appealed to Akiros that the people deserved freedom from such a petty tyrant.
[Perception check passed] Imoen noticed a moment of hesitation in the manner of Akiros, but ultimately the bandit laughed her off, even if it seemed a bit forced. Turning to flee into the woods, Akiros dismissed her attempt to turn him against his "lord". Imoen quickly directed,
[] Everyone to remain here for the potentially challenging fight ahead
[] One (or two) of the party members to pursue the fleeing Akiros (write-in whom).
Meanwhile, Kressle seemed hesitant to attack. "So, how much of what you just spewed is bullshit?", she asked.
[] Write-In response.
Ultimately, Imoen was inclined more toward:
[] Killing the bandits, so they could do no more harm to the people of the Stolen Lands.
[] Fighting them, but granting clemency to those who ultimately surrendered
[] Letting them go, provided they were to abandon the Stag Lord.
[] Other (write-in)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following This Encounter, however it turns out, Imoen's group will have reached level 3. Please see the next post for more on that!

More narration and character interaction will be given to this scene following the vote!

Chapter 3.L
Chapter 3.L - Character Leveling to Level 3

This post concerns level-up choices for our various NPCs. The previous post contains the story update and votes for story decisions. You are welcome to vote in one, or both, or neither. You are welcome to put all your votes in one post, or do a separate post for each.

They are separated mainly because moving forward "plan" voting is not allowed for level-up choices. Please feel free to continue to use "plan" voting for the story votes, if you wish to! If you do not want to make individual decisions for the level up choices, then that's fine! Just vote on the story part. There's no pressure to vote for both!

I can't and won't stop you from copy-pasting someone else's votes on character leveling. But I would prefer it if you only voted for character leveling if you were willing to think about each choice in turn. Or, just vote for the ones that you care about / want to think about, and leave the others "blank"! :) Thanks.

Unspecified Camp Interlude #1
So, stab them in the back with them none the wiser. And here I thought rivvin had no common sense.

Imoen stirred the camp pot with one hand, idly waving her other hand to fan the flames of the fire with a bit of magic. Off to the side, Jaheira fed leftover bits of the rabbits that Minsc had caught to her wolf.

Imoen continued her thought, "... it's just... I mean, if you have to kill someone, and I'm not so naive as to think that you can always avoid that, do it cleanly, y'know? Quickly. None of this anticipation. I hate the idea of making someone linger around, waiting for a death they know is coming," she commented, half to herself, and half to Viconia. The other woman was sitting opposite, grooming her Owl familiar.

"So, stab them in the back with them none the wiser? And here I thought rivvin had no common sense," Viconia nearly smiled.

"That's not what I mean... well, I guess it sort of is. I'm not much for 'honor', I guess. If someone has to die, if there's not a good chance to make them turn around... I'd rather them not have to be afraid of it in advance. Maybe I'm not saying it right... But open challenges are a bit silly, that's true," she paused to add in a few of Jaheira's spices to the stew.

Linzi joined in, frowning, "That's not very heroic, though, is it? Stabbing people in the back? Knives in the dark? I guess it can still make for a good story..."

Imoen's face grew stony, and her hand reached to grasp at the necklace around her neck. The charm may have lost its magic since her brother had given it to her, but it still carried its meaning. "Maybe not, but I've learned what trying to play storybook hero gets you..."

An awkward silence fell. Soon, though, Minsc returned to the camp with another rabbit, allowing a change of subject...

Unspecified Camp Interlude #1b
"Open challenges are more of a statement. Sometimes a moral one, however misguided. A political more often, than not.
If you want your statement to be powerful, you must be seen and heard...

No reason to be foolish about it, of course."
The stew was excellent; Imoen had a chef's touch (naturally!). ...Admittedly, it had taken a lot of burnt attempts and lectures from Jaheira... and Khalid's gentle instruction... Khalid.

Across the fire, Minsc was grooming Boo, his huge fingers possessed of uncanny dexterity as they picked bits of dirt from behind Boo's ears. To the side, Jaheira leaned against a tree, staring upward at the unfamiliar night sky.

"Open challenges are more of a statement." Viconia spoke to her suddenly, quietly, intently. Imoen hadn't even noticed her sit down. Somehow Viconia made even sitting on the grass seem elegant.

It took a second for Imoen to remember the earlier conversation, and by the time she had Viconia was continuing.

"Sometimes a moral one... however misguided. More often than not, a political one. If you want your statement to be powerful, you must be seen and heard."

Imoen was sure there was significance to the emphasis; there always was with Viconia. To be seen, was for others to take note of you. To be heard, was for them to give you respect after they had done so. A statement, then, must have both to have impact. It was, of course, obvious when you put it that way.

Imoen replied softly, "To make a death into a statement... I can understand the use, of course, but... it's so cold. And so appealing. Too appealing." Her eyes stared at her own hands, cleaned of bloodstains new and old.

Viconia narrowed her eyes, "You are the master of your blood, Imoen. You have proven that time and again. Your will is iron. Bend your power to your purpose." It was both advice, and a command, at once.

"Challenges are risks, too, aren't they? I've certainly not won every fight I've been in."

Viconia replied, "You should not be foolish in your challenges, of course. Stack the deck, if you must, provided others do not know that you have done so. Challenge only when you are confident in your victory. Then crush them utterly for all to see. This is victory, Imoen. This is power. It matters not the end; I respect your nobility far more than I once did, but idealism will get you nowhere. If you want to save people, if you want to help them, you must have power. You know this to be true."

Imoen did not respond for a long time, staring at the night sky, as Jaheira did. Khalid had enjoyed pointing out the constellations, and telling their stories around the campfire. Was Jaheira thinking about that as well? Grieving the loss of even the stars that had been a testament to his memory? She looked across and saw Jaheira looking at her now, giving her a sad and understanding smile. Who was Imoen to cry still over Khalid, when the wife he left behind could be so strong?

"Khalid once told me," she finally replied to Viconia, "that power should not be used needlessly. He was one of the greatest fighters I ever met, but never sought conflict. Others called him a coward, and a fool. He fought when he had to, but only when he had to," she paused. "I don't know if I can emulate him in that, not fully. But I won't cause pain in order to be powerful. I won't kill just because it will bring me respect."

Viconia frowned, "Then you are still a bit of a fool, but that is nothing new. Consider this, then, at least: if you are going to kill someone regardless, and in doing so can create respect, what is the loss in doing so?"

For that, Imoen had no answer. She stared into the stars for a long time that night, but Khalid did not answer her either.

Chapter 3-b
Chapter 3-b: Conflict At Thorn Ford, Part 2

~~~
Jaheira and Viconia finished putting the poisons in the wine that had been labeled for The Stag Lord. "Nothing that should be fatal… unfortunately," Viconia clipped.
~~~

Akiros Insmort, the so-called right-hand of the stag lord stood before her.

"I'm sure you've heard many stories of the Stag Lord and his people. You probably think we're flesh-eating madmen. We're nothing of the sort, I assure you. We essentially want the same as those who sent you - ownership of this land and the right to take payment from those who live and work here. The Stolen Lands aren't part of Brevoy, despite what anyone may think - my commander has as much right to this land as Jamnadi Aldori."

He continued, "I personally forbade Kressle's people from harming the owners of the trading post. They paid on time and worked dutifully - at least until you showed up and disturbed things. But despite that, does this really need to end in violence? Restov is too far away to be able to effectively control these lands, and I don't want to lose any of my people. So, please - leave the Stag Lord be, and leave in peace."

Imoen stared for a moment, sensing the tension of everyone around her. All knew this could erupt into combat at a moment. "You ask whether this needs to end in violence? Why not turn that around? Regularly travelers and merchants are robbed or killed in these lands by your people. Do you think the bloodstained and pillaged carts sitting just outside your camp are a justifiable part of your 'Lord's rule? The farmers and hunters, those trying to live their lives, are extorted with no hope of recourse or appeal. You say you 'personally forbade' Kressle's people from murder?" Imoen barked a laugh, "Do you want applause? I saw them barely restrain themselves from going beyond leering comments and strong-arming. And what about all the other instances in which you have not personally," Imoen stressed the word mockingly, "forbidden murder?"

[Sense Motive check passed]
She continued, "You carry yourself with an air of nobility, desperate to be part of a real kingdom. But you only serve a bandit, Akiros. A cruel man with delusions of grandeur, and you enable that cruelty with your platitudes." Imoen allowed her face to lose some of its hardness, "It doesn't need to be too late for you, though. Your hesitation is clear; help me against your so-called 'lord', and you might someday do more than just bow to brigands."

Akiros was filled with barely restrained emotion, and when he replied it was tightly controlled, "Ha.... a very eloquent attempt, but your charm is not enough to turn me traitor. Kressle!", he barked, "deal with them as you see fit. I must return to our king at once!" With that, he began running into the woods.

"Coward!" spit Kressle, before turning to you, seeming hesitant to attack. "So, how much of what you just spewed is bullshit?", she asked.

Imoen was, of course, not above lying, stealing or cheating to protect the innocent as well as those she cared for. But in this case, she was entirely truthful in saying, "Not a word. Your Lord is cruel and, judging by your attitude, not particularly good as a leader. Svetlana asked after you, do you know? I don't know why. Asked me to 'show mercy'; can't imagine why after you showed such cruelty toward her." [Insight check passed] "Some personal connection, perhaps? It doesn't matter…"

Kressle interrupted, sneering "She's a fool, then, to imagine there is any connection still between us!"

Imoen continued, "Well, her request or not, I can't simply let you walk free to terrorize more travelers," here Imoen raised her voice, and allowed a bit of her magic to flow to her eyes and voice (a trick that never got old!), and addressed all the bandits at once. "Those who lay down their arms and surrender will be spared, and be given a chance to make amends for their crimes."

[Diplomacy check failed] [Intimidate check failed]

Kressle laughed "In case you didn't notice, you're outnumbered, fancy eyes or not. Fellows, to battle!"

The battle seemed to go on forever, but as most, was over fairly quickly.

Arrows flew at them from all sides. Minsc simply ignored them as he charged forward. "Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!!"

Jaheira remained silent, shield raised against the arrows as she, too, quickly advanced, along with her wolf.

Linzi started off allowing her inspiring magic to flow through them all, before switching to her crossbow.

Aerie began with a Grease spell and Viconia Blessed the group, before both began shooting back with their bows at the bandits in the trees.

Imoen fired off two quick arrows at a nearby bandit before he could react, continuing to aim for weak points throughout the battle.

It was a hard fought victory. Jaheira was unconscious by the end (afterward quickly healed by Aerie and Viconia), and most of them were notably wounded (Viconia being the exception).

In the moments after the battle, it was clear that a few of the bandits' lives, including Kressle's, could be saved if they were so inclined to spent a cure light wounds scroll or spell.

[] (Neutral) No… they were given their chance. Now we can only give them a clean death.
[] (Neutral) Save only Kressle. She may have information, and Svetlana did ask…
[] (Neutral Good) Save all four; we'll give them a chance to earn redemption (and answer some questions)…
[Either of the later two votes will lead to a mini-scene interrogation, as well as a vote as to what to do with them afterward]

Searching the bandits, and the encampment, they found an assortment of minor treasures. Kressle herself carried a fine pair of axes, as well as the ring that Svetlana described, which Imoen pocketed. Most of the bandits' equipment was low quality, but they did pick up a number of bows and blades for selling. One set of orders carried interest: Kressle had been instructed to burn down an old hut to the northwest, with directions described.

More interesting was a bound and gagged prisoner hidden in a tent. A dark-haired man, late middle aged. They cut his bonds, of course.

"Thank you, stranger. My name is Jhod Kavken. I'm a priest of Erastil, from Galt." He went on to tell them of how the bandits had captured him and demanded that he heal their wounds, and his subsequent refusal. Imoen saw Jaheira, to the side, nod approvingly.

Erastil… Imoen recalled what she'd learned. A priest of… civilization? Hunting. Taming the wilderness, something like that. A Good deity, certainly.

Jhod indicated he intended to make his way to Oleg's trading post, and asked them to keep an eye out for the lost ruins of the Temple of the Elk that he'd originally been looking for. Imoen considered whether there was anything she wanted to ask him, or ask of him.

[] Write-In (optional).

Finally, it was a decision as to what their next priority was. They still had no real leads on where the Stag Lord's fort was. To the east was an Ancient Tomb where Tartuccio had apparently been. They could track down the traitor? Far to the northwest lay the described hut. Perhaps it had valuable information? Or they could simply explore deeper into the woods.

[] Ancient Tomb - track Tartuccio
[] Abandoned Hut - look for clues
[] Explore Deeper

If you would like to see more of a particular character or characters, then vote for them here! They do not have to be in this party. You can also vote for the interaction of two characters in particular (though if they are in different parties it may be a while before I can do such a scene).

The first character/pair from each voter is guaranteed at least a small scene in the upcoming chapter or chapters. Everyone is a winner for this vote.

[] Character Scene: Write-In

Chapter 3-c
Chapter 3-c: Conflict at Thorn Forn
~~~
What to do about the surviving, though dying, bandits?
While Imoen was the leader of their group in name, Jaheira was as much so in practice and experience. So it was that the rest of the party was content in this case to leave the decision to them after voicing their own say.
Viconia wished to keep at least one alive for interrogation, with no particular care what happened to them afterward.
Aerie was torn, but opposed to healing them if it meant they would simply kill them shortly afterward.
Linzi was a bit shell-shocked at the question itself. Imoen supposed heroic stories and ballads didn't often delve into the question of what to do when you hadn't quite killed the 'bad guys' all the way.
Minsc was quite content to stay out of the decision entirely. Declaring that his job was "Swords, not Words", and that such decisions were for witches and witch-like friends.
It was a hurried discussion out of necessity, but ultimately Jaheira (and Minsc at her direction) gave quick deaths to most of the bandits, leaving only Kressle alive. Holding her down, they used a single cure spell to ensure that she would not die anytime soon, and then tied her up.
~~~

Jhod, the rescued priest, was prodigiously grateful to them, and very willing to tell his tale. He was originally from Galt (Imoen vaguely recall that being a country to the south, a ways). He had received dreams directing him to locate the Temple of the Elk. [Sense Motive check passed - Jaheira]. Pressing him a bit as to his reasons, he admitted that he had shamed himself in the eyes of his church, and was seeking to atone for his mistakes in doing so. For the moment, that was his only "duty". He did not know much about the ruins, only that they housed an ancient temple to Erastil, long abandoned.

Jaheira indicated privately to Imoen that he seemed genuine in his remorse and words, and did not think it wise to press him for details on his shame at this time.

[] Heed Jaheira's advice
[] Press anyway (check required)

He was very willing to use his magic to heal the party on the spot, though he did not have sufficient to accomplish the task fully on his own. This significantly lightened the burden on the group's magic.

In terms of the question of future service, Jhod indicated that he had been hoping to serve the will of Erastil in these lands, and were you to establish yourself as a legitimate ruler here, he would be honored to serve you directly in that regard, provided you did not go against Erastil's will. From what Imoen knew about Erastil, and what Jaheira later confirmed for her, not going against "Erastil's will" should be pretty easy. He seemed to be one of the best gods to her, in terms of his concern with actually helping people flourish. Still, Jhod was very fervent about his god; something to keep an eye on.

~~~
Imoen indicated that Minsc should rouse their prisoner, Kressle, to wakefulness.
"Hello again, Kressle," she said with a sad smile. "Because Svetlana asked it of me, I'm going to offer you another choice. A quick death, or cooperate with us in exchange for the opportunity to atone for your crimes. Take a moment, think about it."
She left Kressle for a while, sitting tied. Allowed the bandit captain to take in the bodies of her 'comrades' that she'd failed in at least one way. Imoen didn't have much hope for Kressle coming around, and if Svetlana had not asked it of her she would not have bothered. In some sense, she felt dirty. Giving one murderer a chance at redemption while denying that chance to others? Perhaps some of which were less hardened in their ways? It was a hard choice. But that was life: hard choice after another.
Returning, Kressle was subdued; drained. "What do you want, anyway? And what are you proposing, exactly?"
"Everything you know about the Stag Lord; men, operations. In exchange, you won't be executed, nor imprisoned indefinitely. You will have to do and show more than that, though, to be a free woman again someday."
[Diplomacy check passed] Kressle mulled it over slowly. "Fine. Rat-bastard anyway. Useless piece of shit of a lord." And Kressle shared what she knew. The Stag Lord's encampment was to the south, on the north end of the Tuskwater lake. Creepy and mysterious mists had made it difficult to navigate there, recently. There wasn't much regularity in the patrols of the Stag Lord himself, so she didn't have much of use there. Kressle did share about the Stag Lord's top lieutenants. There was Akiros Ismort, "useless prissy son of a whore. Thinks he's better than everyone else. Stopped sharing my bed just because I cut a girl who got too mouthy." Dovan from Nisroch, "Sadistic bastard. Likes seeing pain. Fucked up, if you ask me. You have to kill a bastard, just kill 'em." Finally, Auchs. "None too bright; huge ox of a man, though. Dovan's got him under his thumb, I think."
Finally, Kressle spoke of her recent orders to burn down this abandoned hut. "No idea why, but mr. lord is furious about it. Wants it wiped from the map."
Having exhausted Kressle's knowledge, it was decided to:
[] Divert back to Oleg's, escorting Kressle and Jhod, before moving on to this mysterious hut.
[] Take Kressle with you to the hut, planning to return to Oleg's afterward. Jhod decides to accompany you in this case, sensing that he'll be safer in your presence.
Along the way, you
[] Keep Kressle with hands bound
[] Hands unbound during the walking, but unarmed. (Bound when sleeping)
~~~

Later, as they walked, Imoen found herself walking alongside Minsc (and Boo, of course).

"Hey, Minsc?"

"Hmm?"

"How are you? And Boo?"

Minsc mulled the question. "Minsc and Boo stand ready, as always. We are well. Hale and hearty! I sense that we continue on the path where only heroes and rangers and hamsters dare tread," he finished solemnly. "But, Imoen seems sad. Do not frown! We are all heroes. You, and I, and Boo. Jaheira and Aerie-witch and little Linzi, too! Even in Viconia stirs the heart of heroism and goodness!"

Off to the side, Viconia muttered "Speak for yourself, you great ox of a rivven."

Imoen ignored her (and Minsc had not seemed to hear). Imoen continued, "Do you think heroes do the kinds of things that we do, Minsc? Killing the dying bandits? I'm just not sure..."

Minsc pondered the question for a long time. Petting Boo absently. "Sometimes evil is stinking in its den. Sometimes it is very well-scrubbed evil. Sometimes heroes must deal with both! Boo says that heroes must sometimes make hard decisions, but Minsc finds most decisions very easy, yes? Evil, meet my boot. But... Minsc is glad that Imoen will make hard decisions. Fear not, though! If you are down, I will inspire you by charging blindly onward!"

Imoen giggled, giving Minsc a side-hug. "Thanks, Minsc. And thank you, Boo, of course," giving the hamster a scratch behind the ears. "I'm glad to have such a fine pair of heroes as friends!"

squeak! squeak!

Minsc only beamed.

~~~
Vote continues for 24 hours minimum. After that, another 24 hours, or a total of five votes.
This is the last chapter 3 section.
~~~

A/N: Minsc's use of the word "witch" does not correspond to the witch class, but rather any female arcane spellcaster that he respects; it is part of his Rashemen culture. He will at times refer to both Imoen and Aerie as witches, even though neither of them have Witch levels, as well as Viconia (who does have Witch levels). In time, perhaps Linzi and Octavia will have that appellation as well. He has specifically adopted Aerie as "his" witch, following the death of his prior witch Dynaheir, and so will use the title for her with the most regularity.
