Not sure why but tree names just feel right for this

Then, after years of eighty-hour workweeks, you couldn't do it anymore and walked away, but that's all your life had been for so long that you had no one, and now, you cast about for anything that might feel meaningful...

I'm making a lot of sacrifices right now because of my grandmother's dementia and my mother-in-laws stage four cancers so this resonates with me.

The other backgrounds all seem like someone who had connections and lost them, but for some reason having our protagonist be someone who was just always bad at connections feels more right.

Once you were someone important, an genius working to advance humanity understanding of the world, unfortunately in your zealously you made many enemies and no friends, thus when your enemies conspired to bring your low no one was there to help you, now you have been shunned by the scientist community, your research believed to be nothing but a joke, but the fires of ambition still burns into your chest, and one day you will show then all.

Anyway, made my own background, is this approved @picklepikkl ?

There was something about your family that felt "off" to most people. When you went through your late grandfather's papers, you found a packet of scrawled notes, and suddenly your life made sense.

If it were to win I would tweak it a bit to fit better with your [WOE] being Isolation rather than, to give it a name, A Fall From Grace; the emotional focus needs to be on the loneliness and lack of support, not on what brought you there. But I appreciate the creative energy, and I'd do my best to make something as close to it as possible work if it won!

Could you explain the distinction between this and The Awkward Nerd? It seems like it's gesturing at the same idea.

This one, though, is totally reasonable and distinct from the existing ones. It's a bit of a different genre of occult fantasy than I Walk In Dreams, but I can make it work.

Uses magic? Check.
Associated with fire, illuminations and creativity? Check.

A bit too much on the nose, perhaps, but I like the poetry of it.

We could also go a step further, and make it a reference to the Ash Lad/Cinder Ella character archetypes, which may or may not be based on Loki to begin with.
