'D-damn it!'
You know, looking at it like that, Johanna might just have gotten some of that protagonist juice after all, just not as much and without the save the world responsibility.

...Second Place Banzai!

You know, looking at it like that, Johanna might just have gotten some of that protagonist juice after all, just not as much and without the save the world responsibility.

So basically, if she got the awkward around girls trait, she potentially got the love zapping power, but didn't get stealing agency from other characters, at times sociopathic behavior, and overall unlikability? And we have no responsibilities?

This could be the best quest ever.

Cease thy baseless remarks, unless thou hungers to taste my fine steel high-concentration particle beam upon thine flesh!

So, like, a modest proposal.

We keep the shipping and romance stuff to the side, for now, unless it explicitly (or implicitly I guess) comes up. And don't really say anything about it. Like I was doing it too, but honestly it is kinda... weird, to be talking about a Cherry romance when we have no idea what Cherry's sexuality even is. Like, we can't even be 100% sure that our character isn't straight and isn't super charmed by this woman's overall charisma the moment she walked in, in more of Fae glamour way than an "omg she's hot" sort of way. It's ridiculously unlikely, but it's theoretically possible. So we're commenting on an unknown and a plausible hypothetical.

Like saving it for later is probably going to result in silly waifu wars, and I'm aware of this, but it shouldn't necessarily muddle our decision making either, and I don't really want it driving discussion when it isn't like... a main factor. If it comes up (or even something super suggestive I guess), I think it's cool to talk about that. I just don't want side conversations about characters sexuality that we may not know when it isn't even particularly relevant to the entry, you know?

Caveats: I'm speaking as a regular user, my Arb hat is obviously off. I'm a huge shipper and F/F dork, as I'm sure I've made clear. I just think this might not be a bad idea, given the... three pages of convo that occurred in this entry? (I'm open to my mind being changed, though.)

(I should note that if the QM has any preferences I'd be happy to defer to those)

Huh. My main motivation to participate in the shipping wars that by all rights shouldn't have even started was to make small talk, or, speaking in forumite terms, shitpost.

As long as doesn't spin out of control, I'm fine with any decent topic of conversation, though I do vaguely understand the term of "thread derailment" and how it can be bad for the continued discussion of the thread's topic, or, in this case, Quest.

Sooo
Yeah, three pages is cutting it rather fine.
Even PMAS discussions about why microwaving tea is absolutely awful and should never be done don't last that long.

Thanks for pointing it out.
I'm going to restrain myself until we have grounds for shipping, at least.

That said, what could we discuss in the meantime?
Ah. Yeah, I've one question.

@Anya Homura, how well do we remember contents of our last dream? I mean, is it the usual hazy, forgotten by the start of the next day deal, or a little more coherent one?

Not the worst Idea I've heard. So on that note, a vote for practicality.

[X] "So, you're the best fighter around here! Do you work all the time, or do you focus on a few major jobs?"

Hm. On the one hand, don't want to go crazy- I didn't necessarily mean that the current vote was bad, or I'd have changed mine. xP It'd still create a kinda awkward, minor jokey ship-teasing sort of deal that just wouldn't be a big thing, and I do like that. I think it could be kinda funny. I think that Protag-Chan (I can never remember her name) saying something like that instead of something to the point of what you're saying, which is more relevant to her, also kinda indicates that she's still a little out of it, which is appropriate enough if the charisma is that strong (Even if it was a omgurhot thing I assume the charisma would stack).

No objections to the alternate vote though- I actually think it's a good one that would get us some decently useful information, and I prefer it over the other alternative at this time. So if it gets a wagon, that's good. Just explaining why I'm fine with Cherry still having a bunch of votes, if that makes sense.

My apologies, gang, but the next update will be a while.

I've got to go visit some relatives tomorrow, and then soon after, relatives will be coming down to visit me, so I'm probably not going to find a good amount of time to write down an update.

Sorry, and thank you again for your continued support of this quest.

GUESS WHO LIVES, BITCHES.

That's right, after a while of hiatus, it's time for the next update! Let's tally up first, and then I'll get right on that update!

1.8: "No, no, we can't. The moment's gone now."
"Uh, until now I've only been spending time with Cherry, so there wasn't anything to dislike!" you say and oh. Oh dear you're just digging yourself deeper.

Alva chuckles. "Really, Cherry? Keeping this wonder of a young lady all to yourself?" she prods with a grin on her face.

Cherry looks surprised and then embarrassed. "Wh-what? No, it's nothing like that! I just thought it would be best if Johanna stayed around for a while to, uh, get used to thin--"

Alva puts a finger up. "Relax, I can understand where you're coming from. And I'm afraid I have to go soon, Ethel's going to strangle me if she doesn't have the last bit of Fire Ley for her sword," she says, hinting at you.

You put the bottle of Fire Ley on the counter and then blush and walk backwards into the store room. When in, you sink down to the floor and hide your face between your hands.

Holy shit, that could've gone so much better, she just made you lose all composure how did she do that???????????????

"Johanna, are you okay?" Cherry asks you, how did she get in here?

You shrug, still feeling awkward and confused.

Cherry puts a hand on your shoulder. "It's Alva, isn't it?"

You nod.

She sighs. "Yeah, I've known her forever, and she's always kinda been like this. Able to attract attention and make people listen to her. She pays me to say "too charismatic for her own good" when we meet someone new, but I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with her Magic. Not that she'll tell me what it is but... my point is, it's okay. She's nice, when you get down to it. And, she's offered to let us go to the local guard training camp to have some fun with weapons tomorrow. If you're up for it."

Huh. That's... an information overload. You give Cherry a little smile and say "I'll think about it", then you both go back to your work. You also meet a bunch of other people from the local area that honestly can't stick in your mind as the day goes on.

When work finishes, you can proudly say you didn't break a single bottle!

Afterwards, you and Cherry go back down to try and experiment.

You try combining Ice and Air Ley first.

Cherry needs to Flash Step away and bring shovels for the two of you to make your way to the staircase.

You don't think you'll be doing much experimenting for a little while.
~
The next day, you tell Cherry you would, in fact, like to go to the local guard training camp.

"Okay, cool!" She says as she makes omelets. "Mind if I ask why?"

"W-well, uh, you know, it would be nice to see more of the world and stuff?"

"Are you sure it has nothing to do with Alva," she teases.

You stammer and she giggles, telling you that you don't need to have an answer to that question yet. Or ever. You're glad.
~
Work passes, much like yesterday, and after some getting lost, the two of you arrive at the training camp, a bunch of cabins and stuff surrounded by wood and circling fire pits, with targets around the cabins.

It's disturbingly quiet. All you can see is a lit fire and someone sitting by it.

"Uh, hello?" you call out. Besides you, Cherry has a flatter expression. "Excuse me, person by the fire? Can, uh, we come over?"

The person by the fire flops over. "Are you all right?!" you yell in panic. Who is that, and what if they're hurt?

"Johanna, I think that's just a dummy," says Cherry from next to you.

...Oh.

"Cherry, you ruined the act!" came an annoyed shout from a familiar voice, and Alva walks up from behind a tree. She's pouting. "I was going to act all heroic and try and teach you two important lessons in guarding and fighting and stuff while we tried to act like that dummy was alive."

You blink. "We can uh, still do that?"

Alva shakes her head. "No, no, we can't. The moment's gone now. But, anyways..." she says to change the subject, "you came because you wanted to see what we do, I'm betting?"

You nod at that.

"Well, first things first, every guard needs a good weapon. One that preferably complements their Magic, but that's not necessary. The fighting style flows naturally from there. Come on, let me show you the armory you'd start with," she beckons you to follow her. "Cherry, you coming with?"

"No, I'm going to go try my luck with some of the bows again," Cherry smiles and heads off on her own to a shed by the woods.

Alva sighs. "Cherry, you know you suck with bows! Try gauntlets!"

"Never!"

Alva laughs and the two of you walk towards a cabin in the back. She opens the door for you and you look inside to see a plethora of weapons, all shiny and in well condition.

Which one to try out first?

Falchion is broken.

With our magic, which we don't know about IC (how do we figure that out anyway? They must have a way there for people who miss it or something), I'd say a knife, or set of knives, would be our best bet. Our magic is kind of slated for working very well with sneak attacks, so knives or, potentially, small swords that have good maneuverability will probably work better for us in the end.

Uhh... *Shrug* Got nothing else right now.

[X] A smaller ax

Yeah, I kinda agree that knives would work the best. Just to make sure, when we're talking about a "smaller" ax, do we mean something you could swing around in one hand? Because that picture actually looks like the handle is rather large.

"No, I'm going to go try my luck with some of the bows again," Cherry smiles and heads off on her own to a shed by the woods.

Alva sighs. "Cherry, you know you suck with bows! Try gauntlets!"

"Never!"
Cherry knows what's up. With her magic, ranged attacks are pretty ideal. She doesn't even need to snipe exactly, just keep enough distance that nobody can counter attack before she's gone again. You go girl, don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

[Q] Mordekai, the Ashen Blade of Woe

Engraved on its surface are two sets of runes, one on each side, inexplicably translated in your mind into the words in Japanese and English.

"Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity; Thus I will put an end to the arrogance of the proud and abase the haughtiness of the ruthless."

Hahaha, nope.

[X] A falchion.

A shame we didn't choose fire to correspond with it. :V

Because holy shit, those look awesome! Although, I'm not a melee weapons nerd by any stretch of the imagination (if not artillery and tanks, gimme my shot and bayonet at least!) but I'm pretty sure those have a different name? Like...I think it begins with a "C"?

Also, speaking of which, I feel like we should comment on technological differences at some point.

Chakrams to some, though the designs are different. They are just called chakrams in a certain video game.
