1517, A templars demand
[colonization: Stewardship,69+15=84]

From what explorers and sailors have to say about the southlands of the continent are made up of an incredibly wide variety of terrain, from grasslands to mountains to desert and to forests, but what most interests you is the fertile grasslands surrounding an inlet in the land. Hopefully it will be good for settlement, though its far distance from civilization could be a problem. There is also the natives of this land to consider, a farming people from the reports of explorers, with large herds of some sort of strange sheep-deer. What tools and weapons they possess are simple things of bronze, so militarily they shouldn't be a threat, especially as there seems to be no unification of their villages. They also seem to have no appetite for human sacrifice compared to their northern cousins. Hopefully this colony will succeed and not face the issues of the others.

You will learn of the southland colonies fate next turn.

---

[Colonization: Stewardship, 9+15=24]

The company wasn't happy when you tried to fund another expedition onto the continents eastern coast. Two failed colonies already, rumors of the curse of the coast have spread amongst the company soldiers and sailors, and none wish to try their hand at it. But, coin is coin, and the company eventually relents, but only on the promise that if this fails it is to be the last attempt, as they have no wish to continue sending men to their deaths just so they may try and build a city upon their tombstones. A small detachment of soldiers is sent with this colony, along with a priest, to protect the bodies and souls of the men.

You will lean of the third coastal colonies fate next turn.

[Matchmaking: diplomacy, 34+20+16=70]

Ruxandras search for brides for your sons hits a few snags along the way, mainly that the majority of kings and counts these days are too young to have children of age for marriage. This leaves her to look amongst the families of those who, while not royalty, are still powerful in western Europe. First would be a somewhat local choice, Fiora de'Medici. Youngest daughter of Piero di Lorenzo De'Medici, and only a year older then Lupo, a marriage between your families could help to keep them loyal with their newly regained influence in Firenze. Another option would be to marry the daughter of your Forli neighbor Ottaviano Sforza-Riario. His daughter, Paola Sforza, is his only child with his wife, though he's likely to have a few bastards around Italy from his time as a Condotierri. Beyond bringing the small state more into the fold of Romagna it could make you an ally with a seasoned army. The last choice she can find for Lupo would be a contentious one, a marriage to Cassandra Artois, a French noblewoman. Her house, the Artois, is a weakened one as the male line died out, Leaving the family without lands to their name, though still with considerable wealth and influence. While the French may be an unfriendly people to Italy, having connections to the nation could be useful.

---

[Trade: Stewardship, 81+10=91]

Portugal is more then happy to start trading. Their merchants already do plenty of trade with other nations, and they're more then happy to find someone they can gain more trade and coin from. Their colonies far in the east have given them access to spices not seen before, nutmeg, mace, and cloves, and the rich and noble clamor for these new sweet substances. Therefore, high prices are charged upon those who would buy them, and no exception is made for Romagna.

+30fl/turn, access to rare spices.

---

[Roads: stewardship, 99+20=119]

Despite the murder that took place the rest of the construction of the road goes by incredibly smoothly. A comfortable road without twists or hikes is soon built between the two rivals, and a patrol is organized to ensure it isn't tampered with by either city. Given it was only a single road this time and not multiple connecting all the various lands of Romagna, it's no real surprise it wasn't a bigger mess then it was. All that's left is the road between Parma and Modena.

---

[Construction: Stewardship, 97+20+15=132]

With the on again off again construction of the theater it's taken too long to actually get it fully built, but now if you gaze across the city of Ravenna there is a large domed temple to the arts, if one that's not fully decorated yet. While the structure of the building is complete, its still in need of the fine touch of decoration, otherwise you have merely an imposing, austere structure more fit to be a place of war then a place of the arts. Silk banners and fine rugs are brought inside, along with many works of art from local artists that Django has befriended. And even now the stage still must be completed, while a plain marble floor may be enough for most work, something a little more presentable would be appreciated.

---

[STEAM!: Learning, 6+20+18=44]

This steam device may truly be more effort then its worth. Elena, when told to try her hand at it again, said shed see what she could do, but instead found herself using the copper and steel requested for designing it to instead work on a few designs she had in her head unrelated to the power of steam. After years of work still unfinished, and little love for the project to begin with, she tells you that when her thoughts drift towards the infernal device her mind goes blank from the boredom of it, unable to find herself able to focus on it and letting her mind drift, either to her work or her family. Needless to say, no progress was made upon the machine.

---

[Spying: Intrigue, 51+20=71]

Arnao may have finally gotten a lead on the shroud of Eden. Apparently a priest, only known as Jehannin, has been traveling the countryside and healing the serfs of all kinds of ailments. From infections to handicaps this man has healed, said to possess healing power granted unto him by god. This would be interesting on its own, but more importantly is how the church and assassins have reacted to him. The French church has claimed him to be a trickster, a charlatan, that his healing is merely deception to gain the admiration and charity of the commonfolk. The assassins, meanwhile, have sent one of their recruits to keep an eye on the man, stalking him as he travels. The only issue however is that every report of the priest fails to mention any sort of cloth the man carries other then the cloths on his person, but if its gotten the attention of the assassins it must be something at least.

---

[Training: Intrigue, 18+20=38]

Sophias training of the guardsmen continues, though it shows little progress. Its not the tactics for fighting an assassin that they fail at, but the all more important part of finding the assassins. They continually fail to check any possible hiding spot, from stacks of hay to closets. They fail to watch where they're walking, often coming close enough to a ledge to be attacked by them. And most importantly, they just won't look up no matter how many times its drilled into their heads. If Sophia had a few assassins of her own shed sic them on the guards for some more active training, but for now she does what she can.

---

[Treasure hunting: Learning, 93+20=113]

Belotti believes he's finally found a lead as to where this chamber could be. In a few records from the war of the four emperors a vault is mentioned, blessed by the gods and containing nothing but mysteries. None of these emperors wanted the others to gain a hold of it, believing it would give them the fortune of the gods. Belotti believes that the winner of this war, the Flavian emperor Vespasian, may have hidden the vault, built something to hide it from prying eyes. Of course that doesn't narrow it considerably, Vespacian had a great many things built, and not all were even finished in his lifetime, but it does give him a lead at the very least.

There is chaos in the colonies in the new world. A plague has swept in, taking the lives of many of the natives both subject and lord, Leaving them with fever and countless marks of pox. Whether this is the same small pox that plagues Europe or not is unknown. In the northern colonies, the Haudenosaunee confederacy has been struck by this plague, with many of its leaders that had helped the northern colony survive falling victim to it, leaving the confederacy without leadership, and the colony without aid.

In the Barbaras colony the recently acquired subjects of the native peoples have also fallen prey to the plague, and it hasn't stopped there. Its spread north into the lands of the Aztec, and south to the Siennese colony, which had far lesser relations with the natives. If that wasn't bad enough the Aztec lord Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, according to the translators, has declared this a curse brought on by the invaders, and can only be stopped by the sacrifice of these foreigners.

Its not merely the Italian colonies that are facing this either, as the French colony of Louisiana, named for the late king, as well as their colony on the lesser of the two major Caribbean islands, has also faced this plague. The subjects and slaves they've made of the local populations falling deathly ill to the plague, throwing the colonies and their plantations into chaos. The Island of cuba, however hasn't faced any of these deaths recently, though many of the natives died of disease during the conquest led by Cortez, though these were assumed to be the normal disease one would face in war. The colony of Brazil has also not faced this plague, though they interact with the natives as little as possible, forcing them out and away from the colonies so they can expand.

---

Speaking of Portuguese colonies, they have claimed that the treaty of Tordesillas is no longer a valid treaty, as the king and dynasty they made it with no longer rules Spain. They have started to colonize the lesser islands of the Caribbean, and has started to expand beyond their original border, expanding up the coast towards the sienna colony. Not only has this caused issues with Cuba, which has up to this point treated itself as the inheritor of the treaty, but also sienna for obvious reasons. A representative of the Auditores colonial charter has even approached the new world company, asking for aid should the Portuguese try anything.

---

And speaking of colonies in general, Cesare seems to have taken your advice, as a Spanish colony has been formed north of the Aztecs. The Cuban island has come to something of a soft agreement with Spain, that so long as Spain doesn't try to retake the colony they wont interfere with, and perhaps even may help with, new Spanish colonies. This colony, Nueva Madrid, has started off fairly well despite where they colonized, a hot and dry place that seems to burn the souls of man, and are quickly working to ensure the security of the southern border from the Aztec.

---

The peasant rebellions in the H.R.E. have finally been put down, the armies of the southern members bringing a swift end to them once they were finally taken seriously. Some remnants of this remain however, with many of the serfs remaining tensions left to simmer. Vandalism and arson still occurs somewhat irregularly, and the serfs often need to be reminded of their place. One apparently has even defaced a church in Wittenberg, hammering multiple papers into its door, as if the serfs knew how to read.

---

The time has finally come. your little knight, your son, has finally come of age and become a man. He's taken to his studies as a fish to water, learning more of battle and martial supremacy then you ever could have imagined, though this has now led to some new problems. "Father please, just let me lead a platoon of men, or a few ships, I want to show what I've learned and gain the soldiers respect." "Or you can go out there and be killed by the first wayward bolt or bullet to come your way. You're being a fool right now Lupo, you've already been taught by some of the best generals in Italy, what more would you gain from this?" "Glory! Honor! Actual experience in leading men in battle, not the basic wargames of the academy. And no soldier will respect me when I need them to if I have no experience. It doesn't need to be in some big war, it could just be leading men against bandits, or fighting against some pirates, anything would work."

He's been pestering you on this for the past week since he came of age. He's unwilling to let go of this foolish request, not willing to see the danger it would put him in. You have no wish to see him get himself hurt, or worse, but he's insistent. You want to refuse him, but he may resent the choice, or you could allow him to do something under some very strict guidelines and with an escort to protect him, but even than it may not be enough.

Your third child's been born, a beautiful baby girl. Her cries have been keeping you up at night, but the sleep is only somewhat reluctantly sacrificed. Already you and Ruxandra are bickering over what name she should have, Ruxandra wanting a traditional Wallachian name, yourself wanting to give her something more Italian.

[] What will you name your daughter.

---

Sadly, with the birth of your daughter, Ruxandra now has to return to Wallachia and her rule. She does suggest that she take Apollonio with her, as he is in line to inherit her place of nobility in Wallachia, and he should learn of the land if he is to be one of its boyars or voivodes. She also wants to take your daughter with her as well, as it'd be safer from assassin attacks. She wont force it, but she is insistent about it.

[] Let her take Apollonio

[] Don't let her take Apollonio

Napoli is still in a state of leaderlessness. They've given up on forming a new royal house, as that would lead to too much infighting, leaving naught but the bastard and the count of Sardinia. An interesting development has come for the bastard, as king Francis has promised him that he would forfeit all claims to Napoli should he accept the French church as the legitimate one. While few have any love for this French church, fewer have a wish for further war with the French, leading to a slight edge for the bastard prince. Still, for now it is undecided who will take the crown.

---

You arrive at the castle one evening and quickly find yourself surprised to see Juan and Charles there. They hadn't sent a letter or any kind of message to tell you they would be there. "Brother, Charles, what brings the two of you here so late?" Juan is the first to speak of the two "It's something I would prefer to talk about inside, somewhere more private." From his tone you can tell your brothers serious. It's the same tone he would use when he was captain commander to address his soldiers, so hearing it used against yourself is unnerving. You lead the two of them into your study and lock to doors behind you.

Juan rubs the bridge of his nose as he seems to think over what he's going to say. "Val, I'll get straight to the point, and I ask you not to interrupt me until I've finished. You have done nothing to aid the roman rite. From day one when father appointed you as governor of Romagna you have done nothing to aid in our conflict with the assassins, only reacting when they've targeted you personally, when they kidnapped Ruxandra, and now with your search for the shroud, which you kept hidden for who knows how long, hoarding it for yourself from the templars when we could have kept it safe out of assassin hands. Your little peace with the Itallian brotherhood has done little to gain the approval of the others within our rite. They see you as little more then a leech upon the rite. I've tried to keep them from acting against you, but even I grow tired of your refusal to aid the order. You've not recruited a soul, not aided us against the assassins. Even now the only reason you act against the French is because they robbed you, and I imagine the moment you've gained whatever imagined revenge you have you'll once again become a hermit from our duty. If you continue on this way, you will be removed from the templar ranks, not having our protection nor our approval. If you 'collect' anymore pieces of Eden or hunt them anymore you will become yet another enemy of the order. As your brother and the grandmaster of the roman rite, I'm giving you this warning now so you might correct this behavior. Coin, supplies, knowledge, anything so long as you don't hoard it to yourself. I can't and won't hold your hand to lead you out of your failings, as grandmaster I must remain impartial. That's why Charles here has a tip on some things you can do to aid the rite. I obviously cannot be involved in this, so I'm going to leave for a moment. Once Charles is finished then you can say what you like." And with that he leaves the room, while Charles begins to pull out a few scraps of paper.

"Your advisor, monsieur Guillaume, is already a member of our order, if from a more strange and cultish sect. He has reformed the public knightly order of the templars, but it is still largely in its infancy, not expanded beyond Ravenna and its original members. The order in its past was a great tool for expanding our influence and recruiting members, and it could be again. If you could fund the reformation of this order and its ties to the templars that would gain some relief for yourself.

You might also try to get your hands on a piece of Eden, and ensure it reaches templar hands this time. I do not have any leads on any more in Italy, but there must be something one could find if you look beyond our borders. An apple of Eden would be especially desired, as with it an Juans staff we would finally be able to open the vault in the Vatican, as was your fathers wish.

Lastly, there is the matter of the colonies. These new lands are ripe for templar influence to spread. If you could change this company of yours managing the colonies into something more templar affiliated that would gain more respect from your fellow templars than merely using it to expand and grow rich and fat. Recruit its leaders to the templars, or its governors, whoever would hold influence, just make sure they're actually willing to join. We wouldn't want one of them to betray our trust and expose our efforts. With that I believe I've covered everything, so we may allow Juan to return."

From there it's a rather tense conversation as Juan reemphasizes your need to affirm your loyalty to the templars. You awkwardly try to shift the conversation to something more relaxed, but the two templars have little time for pleasantries. Soon they make their leave for rooms they had rented in the local village, before returning to Verona and Savoy.

Apollonio and Valeria leave for Wallachia with Ruxandra. She promises that they'll be safe, and even that she has someone in mind to teach Apollonio, perhaps point some of his more devious nature in a batter direction. She also promises to try and bring Valeria by once a year or so so that she won't grow up without her father. Hopefully Wallachia will prove a more peaceful place then Italy.

[formation of an order: Martial, 83+20=103]

Guillaume is ecstatic when he's given the go ahead to start rebuilding the Knights templar as a proper order again, but once he has to actually research how one would go about that it's a little more difficult. Of course a castle or monastery is needed to house the brothers of this fraternal order, that was expected, but what he didn't think about would be the vow and pledge of the knightly order. He could of course simply retake the old oaths of the templar, but he wants an exact copy of their oath to use, not merely something similar. That would need him to work either with the roman papacy to look through their records, or to work with scholars in the levant, currently ruled by the mamluk. A new oath could be made but it wouldn't hold the same authority as the original.

Then there's perhaps the most important aspect of any holy order, recognition by the pope. while there may be more popes now, really the one they need would be from the roman papacy, meaning that Guillaume, on his own, must convince his holiness of the virtue and piousness of the fledgling order, and prove it is worthy of fighting in the name of God and protecting his flock. Once they've gained that recognition they can not only truly be considered a holy order, but if given the same rights as the original order, they would be exempt from the holy tithe and be allowed to have their own chaplains who could perform religious services. It would also legitimize themselves and encourage recruits, either from the nobility or the layman, to join.

Then there's the matter of funding, but Guillaume actually has an idea for that. Swords and armor do not make themselves, and it would be an injustice to take them from the hardworking smiths, so coin is needed for its continued survival. In the past the Knightly templars funded their good works through a system of banking, where they would be given whatever treasures a traveler had when they entered the holy land and in return be given a record of what they had given the order, which they could then take to a different stronghold of the order and be given a roughly equal amount of treasure to what they had originally given, keeping them safe from bandits and raiders and the trouble of transporting such quantity's of wealth. Of course banking doesn't quite work that way anymore, but it would still be a lucrative way to fund their efforts, so Guillaume is asking you whether the order could "partner" with the bank of Borgia in any way in exchange for a fraction of the profits. Hopefully one day in the future, when their name is more respected, donations of land, food, and coin will allow them to expand what ventures they might pursue to fund the order, but for now they don't have that kind of reputation.

Will you allow the order a place as guards and members of the Bank of Borgia?

[Marriage: diplomacy, 9+20+20+20=69]

To say that the Medici are not fans of the Borgia, especially the Borgia-Romana, is an understatement. They still hold resentment for what they see as both the theft and destruction of Firenze and Florence, which they lay at your feet. So when you and Machiavelli approach Piero and suggest a marriage between your children he assumes it to be some joke or part of some plot. It takes some time and effort on the part of Machiavelli to convince the patriarch that you mean what you say. Even when he believes you mean what you say, the man still doesn't care for the offer. Your son hadn't attempted to gain her interest, no words nor gift, no rites of betrothal, showing your boy has no interest in her. The Medici will not simply give away their family. So if you are intent on pursuing this marriage they will expect something in return, a sort of reverse dowry. In exchange for the hand of his daughter Piero and the Medici line will be given the governship of Florence, as well as support for reestablishing their bank, hurt as it was by the reign of Savonarola and the war with the French.

Will you accept pieros demands?

[Funding: stewardship, 16+15=31]

When you open the coffers of Romagna to the templars, your surprised to find yourself without any takers. The simple offer to fund the schemes and projects of the other members of the roman rite you are given in return little more then the cold shoulder. According to Charles, when you ask him why this is, he tells you the major consensus is that the other simply have no desire to feel indebted towards Romagna, not quite trusting your change in attitude towards them. At least it means you aren't losing anything in terms of coin right now.

[Research X2: learning, 32+18+10=60, 67+20+18+10=115]

While you start researching the writings and ring of Solomon you ensure that everything you find is recorded so that you might send it to Juan, hoping it might gain you some reprieve from the templars scorn. You admit you aren't the best choice to work on deciphering Solomon's writings, but Belottis busy searching for the chamber and Elena, while also not the best choice, is busy with the ring. Using the university's library to your advantage, you seek out multiple different books attempting to translate the Hebrew language and its variations, but that doesn't make the job any easier. Even going to the synagogue in Ravenna doesn't help, as the rabbi there isn't too well versed in the older variation either, nor does any of his flock. What you are able to decipher is only in bits and pieces, but seem to support some beliefs that Solomon had been interested in demonology and the occult, as multiple references to demons of gold and light can be found within, though the context for these demons is hard to find, some parts claiming he had fought them, others he wielded them.

The ring however provides some context however, as Elenas discovery shows. She peeled away the layer of iron and copper on the ring to find a golden substance underneath, and when you saw it you recognized it as the same as that of the apple you once held. However, this ring wasn't originally made as a ring, as its rough edges and the appearance of cracks and tears along the metal shows. It was seemingly turned into a ring from a fractured piece of Eden if you had to guess. Later on in Elenas study she tried wearing the ring, and that's where the problems started. She claims that once she wore it the ring started to burn upon her hand, and the marks on her ring finger prove this claim. She also says golden light started to flicker out of the ring, forming multiple glyphs and signs, some of which appeared in Solomon's writings. From these glyphs appeared beasts not of this world, a lion faced man, an eagle winged bull, and a hound with a split open head from which fire spewed, each made of golden light before turning towards their more defined shape. Elena ripped off the ring, went to a priest, then told you of what happened, shoving the ring into your hands and telling you she has no wish to consort with demons nor fell magics.

What you discovered is sent to Juan, not only to show that you've found a piece of Eden potentially, but also for advice or records of other pieces of Eden, to see if any had done the same. The letter in return comes with not only a letter but copies of some records from 200 years ago, detailing one of the powers of an apple of Eden, that which created illusions and light and made these illusions physical. Another details how some pieces of Eden were destroyed by time or intent, but the remaining shards could hold some power from its original piece, though less powerful or more hazardous to use. Juan says he believes this ring to be one such piece, molded by Solomon's hand to allow him control over its remaining power. The iron and copper may have been there to prevent it harming its wielder. However the ring interests your brother little, the writings holding his eye. If Solomon wrote how he remade the ring to be useable, or any other insights the dead king may have had. He tasks you with finishing the translation and bringing it and the ring to the sanctum in Verona so that it may be copied, protected, and kept from assassin hands.

[Humanitarian aid: Learning, 42+18=60]

You encourage the company to send a few doctors and priests to the American colonies, along with medicine and food to try and counteract this plague that affected the natives. From what the doctors have been told they say it resembles the black death, from the appearance of the blisters to the lasting effects of scarring and blindness to the few survivors. This revelation terrifies some of these doctors, even to the point of abandoning the trip, while others claim that this is something they need to stop in its tracks so that it cannot spread back to Europe. These doctors write letters to the other colonial nations to not send further ships to the colonies without doctors aboard to contain the sickness and to keep its miasma from spreading over the ocean.

It will be some time before the doctors reach the colonies.

[Spying: Intrigue, 98+20=118]

The healing priest Jehannin is now under Arnaos protection. After being saved from an attack by the French assassins, Jehannin has been brought to the crows headquarters and questioned, about why the church hates him, how he heals, and why the assassins are after him. Apparently he was once a monk at Mont St Michel but a few months ago. One day a chest was brought to the abbey by hooded figures along with a few cardinals of the Avignon papacy. He didn't think too much about it until one day, the abbot, fell and cracked his hip. He was the first to find the abbot and would've taken him to a doctor, but instead the abbot demanded he retrieve the shroud from the chest, now held in the abbots office. He followed the abbots demand and was astounded that it healed the old man immediately. Jehannin claims this shroud must've been the shroud of turin, holding divine properties from christ. The abbot then demanded that he never let anyone know what he saw that day, about the shroud or his injury. Jehannin tried to forget, but questions gnawed at him, why was it here, why wasn't it being used to help people, and so he brought these questions to the abbot, who wasn't too happy about it. Questions turned to argument, argument turned to threats, threats turned to Jehannin hitting the abbot over the head with an incense burner and fleeing with a ripped off strip of the shroud, and that led to being condemned by the church and hunted by murderers.

When he's asked to show Arnao the piece of the shroud he claims it has little power left to it, able to heal simple cuts and bruises but not the deadly wounds it once could. The scrap, a small piece torn from the corner and smaller than even the palm, certainly bears the marks and appearance of the shroud, leading credibility to his story. For now Jehannin has been placed under the crows and templars protection, to perhaps be used as bait in the future for a trap against the assassins, and the scrap of shroud has been locked away, hopefully it can be reattached to the shroud in the future.

There is little to be said about Sophia's continues training. She keeps beating the tactics for finding assassins into their heads, they keep failing to beat their normal instincts on the finer parts of these tactics. She is making some progress of course, just not easily enough for her liking. One day they will learn, even if it kills them.

Belottis search continues, with little in the way of discovery or reward. They searched the temple of peace, one of Vespasian's major constructions, and found nothing but grit and gravel from the aging building. The imperial for a is likewise without sign of any hidden chambers, strange metals or earie glows. This starts to worry Belotti, as there are few of Vespacians works left standing in Rome, and he doesn't want to start digging to find the destroyed ones.

[Battle: Martial, 90+23=113]

You relent and give Lupo the chance at battle he so craves. You allow him to take a few galleys and marines, along with one of the man'o'wars and its cannons, though he refuses the man'o'war. He says itd be too slow to take the fight to the barbary coast pirates, fast as they are, so he and the crew will need fast ships and fast rowers. The crews arms themselves with pistol, crossbows, and a few muskets among them to bring the fight to the pirates from their deck, and swords and axe when they board, then off they sail. You admit you almost immediately regret the decision, the boy could be killed, or worse taken as a slave by these pirates, why did you let him wear you down. All that's left is to wait and pray.

Some months later, a few weeks after when he said he would return, you have your ships prowling the waters, looking for any sign of him. What they did not expect was the return of galleys, chased by many ships bearing the colors of Algiers. You ships helped to fend off the Algerian ships and escort the fleet back into port. Cheers could be heard coming from the galleys as they made their way into port, and once docked your son came out, leading a man in the robes of a sultan, the clothes of a pirate, and a dyed red beard.

"Father! Might I introduce you to Sultan Oruc Reis, also known as one of the brothers Barbarossa, feared pirate lord of Algiers!" Your son isn't merely talking to you, but loudly speaking so all may know of this mans capture. You had heard some things of the man, a feared pirate and smuggler who became the lord of Algiers in the past year or so, and recently had some conflicts with Spain over the lands of Tlemecan. The man has some scratches and scrapes, as does your son, but is holding himself high in the face of those he came to see him. "We had searched up and down the African coast for some days, looking for any sign of a pirates crew, when we saw a battle at sea, between the land of Algiers and our family in Spain. Seeing this as not only the opportunity to show my skill and courage, but also to help our family, what was I to do but help them. We made for the Algerian flagship while the rest of the galleys engaged anyone who would attempt to stop us and we boarded their ship, fighting off any of their pirates while I marched upon their captain here" Lupo says as he gestures towards Barbarossa, "and imagine my surprise to find out this was their very lord. He gave me a hard fight, the hardest I've ever fought, but I prevailed with the help of my men. We captured the man and made to flee, firing upon the pursuing ships. A few hours away and we had thought we lost them, only for their ships to come upon us, tenfold what we had fought off the coast of Aragon, so we raced our way home, to find our wondrous fleet there ready to save us. Skill, fate, and luck have brought us this well earned victory my friends!" he says, causing a cheer from the crew of the galleys. He leads Barbarossa over to you and says "father, I believe we have a guest. Might I escort him to the villa?" "Please do, and make sure he's placed under guard and disarmed. Ill need a few moments to gather my thoughts, so feel free to rest a while."

This is the last thing you had expected. No, that's a lie, this happening never would have crossed your mind before. You make your way over to the senior marine who you had keep an eye on Lupo, and ask but one question. "Is what he said true?" "For the most part sir, aye. Though if anything he underplays his own role in that heathens capture. He was the first across the ship, not waiting for a plank to be let down as he jumped across the divide. He fought as a man possessed, a terror on those pirates and their captain, though we helped shoot those who tried to stab him in the back. He dueled their captain, disarmed him, and dragged him aboard our own galley for questioning. When he told us he we're the lord of Algiers we didn't believe him at first, but your boy did. Told us to make a quick escape, not even waiting to plunder the ship. We though we were goners till we saw your ships at sea."

You wait another few hours before going to meet your son and tis lord, still wrapping your head around his success. You knew he had some skill but this seems impossible. When you eventually reach the villa you find every door on the outside guarded, and are led inside to the hall where your son and the pirate are seated at a table, talking. In your sons hands is a silver arm, seemingly the pirates as his sleeve is tied a few inches above where his wrist would be. Lupo is the first to notice you. "Father, please come and sit. I was just talking with reis here about his first time at sea so that we could compare." You take your place at the head of the table, bewildered yet again. In very heavily accented, and at times broken, Italian the pirate lord begins to speak. "Your son here made for a half decent admiral in that battle, though it was certainly the element of surprise he had that led him to victory. If he hones that he may just become a second rate pirate." "Don't lie you dog, I'd be first rate if I had any desire to partake in piracy and you know it." "His arrogance needs some tempering as well. But I am a man who despises wasted time, so let's get to it. I've been captured, I'm not too proud to deny it, and I have no desire to remain so. Name me a ransom I might pay and ill make waves out of here with no bad blood between us."

Lupo has gained privateer, +1 martial, +5 to nautical rolls

The conversation continues on for some hours after that, but what terms of ransom did you give redbeard? He may refuse the ransom if he finds it absurd.

The war between Barbaras and the Aztec has already started, and its not gone well for either side. These Aztec are fierce savages, as even without black powder they prove deadly with their javelins and bladed clubs, not to mention they have shear numbers on their side. Or they do for now at least, as the plague continues to spread amongst them whatever casualties they inflict upon the colony are paid back by the bloody hand of this red death. For now the companies army has focused on defensive tactics, creating simple forts in the controlled native territory to fend off the waves that come after them.

---

The southland colony has done surprisingly well for itself. Its not yet thriving or self sustaining, but already their crops seem to be doing well, especially the native ones they have collected, strange root vegetables and fruits. The only issue is they've been ordered to not interact with the natives in case the plague spreads more. This has led to some hostilities with these farmers who believe our shouting to keep them away are threats, or at least that's what some believe they think. But, for now, the colony is started.

---

The same cant be said for the eastern coast and its damned cursed land. Once again these lands prove uninhabitable for colonists, as their crops fail, their animals die, and the earth seemingly acting against them. The company has decided that this coast is unsuitable for European men, and thus wont attempt to colonize it again.

---

The colony on the northern river is likewise suffering. Their patrons in this native confederacy, racked as they are by the red death, hasn't been able to help them either with food or against their other neighbors. Morale is as low as the food is and now they desperately wait for these doctors to arrive.

---

Yours aren't the only colony to suffer right now, as the colony of Cuba, no longer Hispaniola as they cut ties with Spain, has been attacked by a plague of their own. Not one of disease and plague, but of hoards of insects. Small red ants have proven a stronger native threat to the formerly Spanish colony as they devastate their crops. Now they are desperately trading with the other colonies with food to make up for the loss.

---

Finally a new lord of Napoli is confirmed, the Granadan prince now becoming the Napolitan king. Miguel Fernandez, now rechristened Miguel de Tresana, has won the crown, as the count of Sardinia has given up so that there may be leadership for Napoli, which it has lacked for so long. With Miguels crowning he also fulfills the promise he has made with Francis and recognized the Avignon papacy as legitimate, and in return Francis has given up the French claim to Napoli. With leadership finally in place Napoli can hopefully resolve the rest of the problems that were put on a shelf due to the succession crisis. First among them is the claim of the colony of Cuba now belonging to Napoli, which the Cubans are more than happy to accept now with their plague of insects.

---

Another plague has erupted in Germany, this one stranger then it is contagious. In the city of Strasbourg, the H.R.E., the peasants have begun to dance without end. They dance for days, some weeks, before falling dead. Claims of witchcraft have spread, others say they hear the music of the devil and are forced to dance. It doesn't spread as the other plagues have, at least not as swiftly, but a ban on dancing had been put in place within France and the H.R.E. to hopefully limit its infection.

1518, a Loveless Marriage
The agreement is made, the Medici are given governship of their old lands from before Savonarolas capture of the lands of Firenze and Pisa and the rural Arezzo region, and funds are given to support the reconstruction and reestablishment of the Medici bank with the aid of the Borgia bank. In exchange your son is given the hand of Fiora de'Medici. No one is more surprised by this then Lupo, as he didn't imagine the Medici would give up a member of their family or that you would agree to their demands, so once you tell him a few days after his return he is somewhat shocked. A ceremony is held with members of both families invited, but there is little joy from either party. Each side recognizes this as a business transaction more than anything else, and treat it as little else. Whether any love will come of this relationship is unlikely, but hopefully the alliance will prove more than worth it.

"Aye, me and my men can pay that much, though I hope you're accepting of reales, stavrata, and dinars along with your florins. As for not attacking your cities nor ships that is possible, but don't imagine that all the barbary coast will be accepting of the demand, as I only command the ships of Algiers. Now, if that is all, I will be needing a ship to return home, that or for you to allow one of my ships into port so I may be off, I've still a conflict to settle with Spain, and I can hardly lead my men from here." With the deal made a few ships bearing a white flag are sent out to parley with the ships of Algiers, and from there they are to collect the payment for the ransom, while Reis is given the treatment any noble would be granted, so long as he remains within the villa of course. Your son spends more time with the pirate lord then he does with his new wife, asking him question after question, about life at sea, the tactics and techniques of captaining a fleet and governing land, as well as questions on the legends of his home and people, his enamoration with the mythological as strong as ever. Some weeks pass before an impressive Algerian ship, the Shahwa, comes to port and begins to offload chests of gold and silver, their captains payment. The Algerian lord is returned to his people, with Romagna all the richer for it.

Gained 500 florins and a non-Naval-aggression pact

[Army: Martial, 4+21+10=35]

Varga is given the order to try and form a new army to protect the northern gains from the war of the league, and at first he doesn't expect any trouble, but this quickly changes. Its not the training, or the discipline, or even the money that's the problem, its that none of the citizens care enough to join an army. This isn't solely an issue of the northern territories either, but of every piece of land that Varga travels to. According to him, the people have no desire to fight or die for any lord when they'll be so easily traded away. This isn't uncommon either, according to Varga. Citizens, peasants, and serfs have little desire to fight, as unless its some murderous heathen horde their lives would stay the same regardless of ruler. They have no personal nor ideological reason to fight, this being the reason so many nations rely on mercenaries, those who already decided for themselves they are ready to fight and die for coin, or their nobility, who's power comes from their men and the castles they control. For now, as Varga can't find an army for Romagna, he's going to observe foreign armies and mercenaries instead to see if he can learn anything that can be used or exploited in the future.

Since Parma and Modena were already largely under French control, the roads between them are somewhat well maintained already, making Illarios work all the easier. His work starts in Modena with a light crew and the brick necessary for the work and, so long as the weather stays calm, it should be done relatively soon. There's no ancient blood feuds nor bandit gangs that he knows of that could cause his work to suffer.

[Construction: Stewardship, 98+20+15=133]

Finally Djangos theater is done. The building is decorated, cleaned, staffed, and ready for its opening performance, an adaptation of The Faerie Queene. No doubt the acting troupe is trying to earn the favor of your son as its one of his favorite tales. Django invites the council along with many of the influential and powerful families of Romagna to attend, using their attendance to grant credibility to the theater. This sparks something of an increase in would be authors and poets in the region, who hope their works might be featured at the Red theater, as its come to be known for how Djangos decorated it. Carpets and walls bare the color, both an attempt to bring to mind the glorious rome of days long past, as well as placing in some slight details featuring the romani and jews of the city, there for those who would know to look. Django wishes it could be more blatant, but then the patrons of the arts might find the place too vulgar for them.

Not only does this theater attract the local rich and poor alike, but also foreign nobles as well. More than a few noble and wealthy merchants' sons and daughters have been seen at the theater, most of them from Italia but a few Germans and even a Frenchman or two among them. It seems everyone desires a bit of entertainment after all the chaos of the past decade, or perhaps it's in preparation of some war of the future, who can say. What can be said is that its profitable.

While your own forces never actually fought in Parma, many others did. It became the center of the conflict in Milan, both due to its central location as well as its bountiful stores and fields of food. At least, they were once bountiful. The stores were all but burned through by the passing armies, and the fields are only just starting to come back to life. But the worst of the damage is to the city itself, many walls and buildings turned to little but rubble. Most of the citizens have fled into the center of the city where the damage is far lesser than the rest, but its overcrowded to say the least. You hire some carpenters, masons, and architects to begin rebuilding the buildings of the city, finding it a more pressing demand then walls or aqueducts at the moment. The buildings are fairly simple, focusing more on quantity than quality so that as many people as possible can get a roof over their head. With people as cramped together as they are right now your surprised no disease has broken out.

[deciphering: Learning, 77+20+18+10=125]

You spend many nights just trying to piece together all the details of Solomon's writings, for what feels like little reward at times. Most of what you decipher relates to what he's discovered the ring can do with its summoning, along with detailed sketches of what it created and his interpretations of what they could be, specifically a full court of demons. You however believe this is just how the ring adapted to Solomon himself, fitting into his beliefs and then locking into them. But there are some interesting passages at the beginning regarding where he had gotten this and other "shards of eden". Apparently one morning he was approached by an Assyrian messenger, a lord from beyond the Euphrates seeking his guidance. One of his men had plundered a tomb, finding an ancient golden treasure, likely a piece of eden, that was then given to this lord, which he then gave unto a scholar of his. What exactly happened isn't clear, but an eruption of some manner occurred, decimating everything near and far. As Solomon was now the most learned man around they requested his aid in learning if it was safe, while also declaring Solomon may have whatever remained of "the accursed idol". Solomon then went to the crater that was left behind, picking through the ashes where he found multiple golden and black shards, which he then took to his kingdom. Infuriatingly, you still haven't managed to translate what he did with these shards. Obviously he must've figured out a way to use them, possibly even remake them to an extent, but his writing is near indecipherable.

One other thing pokes at your mind as your translating his work, though you cant place your finger on it. You pull out a map of the east and try to figure out where this lord would've been. The crater may have been near where Solomon had sealed away the ring and his writing, the lord would've been further east since he wasn't caught in the blast. And then it hits you. you look at the map, follow the rivers, and almost find yourself laughing. If what you think is right, this piece of eden must be whatever Nergal had locked away. Destroyed millennia before he ever had a chance.

Elena tries to figure out the latest of her personal projects, a lighter variant of the common Arquebus, similar to the Calivers of Byzantium and the ottomans, but with the Wheelock mechanism. These new guns would be, theoretically, stronger and lighter than the ones in use now, not requiring a bracing stick nor an open powder disk. However, all her projects either are too weak, too heavy, or simply inoperable. She says her mind feels as though its clouded, all her work falling apart even before she gets her hands on it. She decides to instead simply give herself a break, taking time off to cool her head, burnt out as it is.

[Immigration: Stewardship, 24+10+15=49]

Machiavelli really isn't the best choice of person for this sort of thing. His way of encouraging immigration is simply to lower the purchasing price of land in the country through new laws, but given there's something of a sense of stability at the moment, not many families are looking for new homes. Right now there's simply little reason for freemen to seek greener fields, and its not like serfs would even be able to in the first place. So for now, there's little, if any, movement into Italy.

[privateering: Martial, 95+20=115]

Since your son proved effective at pirate hunting, and his ships still ready for more, you give the captaincy to Guillaume, and tell him to prowl the waters for any ship that would target your trade. Ships bearing the flag of Algiers are of course ignored as per the terms of the agreement, but many of the Barbary Lords remain active. Not only must the sea lanes fear the barbary coast, but now they must also fear the fleets of the ottomans, as after the peace was made Suleiman loosed his captains and admirals upon the sea so that their lands may recuperate and grow. While this leaves the lanes dangerous, Guillaume sees this as only an abundance of targets, so off he sets with his men, leaving knight commander Reynard in charge of the order while he is away.

Arnao and his crows are keeping an eye on assassin movements for now while trying to keep their heads down. They don't want to alert the assassins they know of the shrouds location, so much of their works been pulled back for the time being, largely keeping an eye on civilian actions. Francis seems to be putting quite a bit of his treasury towards not only repairs of the border territory between France and Spain, but also funding artists, architects, sculptors, and engineers of all types to create all kinds of grand things for France. Its all very Gaudy in Arnaos opinion, especially the new churches, but he has a rather low opinion of French art in general so he's not the one to judge. While they may not have that much in the way of new information, they have been building up a store of supplies for when they are given the command to try and steal the heist from Mont St Michel, which is a lot harder than you'd expect given its on an island. A small sailing boat has been purchased and is currently in the harbor of the city, waiting for use.

Belotti believes he's finally discovered the prophecy chamber. Ig his hunch is correct it should be underneath the ruins of the coliseum, one of the wonders built by the Flavian dynasty. There's one problem however, the followers of Romulus. The wolf headed cult has been found to prowl the location, and it might possibly be their headquarters. Whether they know about the chamber or not is unknown, but what is known is that Belotti will not risk himself nor his assistants. The bodyguards will finally look up, it's a miracle. Of course she could only achieve this by having Anacletos help by attacking them from above a few times before they learned, but it worked. And not only did she have him attack from above, but also from the very many hiding spots the assassins like to use. She also has one recruit from among the guard act as an assassin in disguise during their training, so that they don't grow complacent and think they'll always recognize a threat. While using a disguise isn't the most common of the assassins tactics, its not impossible for them to do. As far as she can tell now they are as prepared for an assassin as they can be without actually facing one.

A meeting between the great powers of the war of the league have met in London recently, along with a few others. Joana of Spain, Miguel de Trasana of Napoli, Emperor Maximillian of the H.R.E., Francis of France, both Popes, Christian of the Kalmar union, Lajos Jagiellon of Hungary, Empress Maria Palaiologos of the League of Byzantium, and of course King Henry himself, gathered to sign a non aggression pact between all the signatories in an act of impressive diplomatic skill on the behalf of Henry, or rather Wolsey with Henry taking much of the credit. Not every signatory was actually there of course, the popes likely would've come to blows if that were the case, as many sent ambassadors on their behalf. As all European powers were invited you to sent an ambassador of your own, your nephew Giovanni. Not only is this a declaration of non aggression, it is also a defensive pact, for should anyone attack another member of the pact then the rest shall act in defense of the attacked nation, putting some weight behind the agreement. This is considered a great feat by the island nation, and many are starting to speak of them as perhaps a third power, behind France and the Empire of course but still impressive.

The treaty of London is now in effect, break it and be fucked, if anyone actually follows through.

---

The war between the Aztec and Barbaras colony continues to be a bloody one for both sides as disease claims more and more lives. The recent arrival of doctors, if anything, has made the war more complicated, as now the Aztec desire to take one of them or more for themselves to treat their people, and have fought all the harder to take them. One of the doctors confirms this to be an outbreak of the black death, though to a new extreme and far stronger amongst the natives, with few if any cases appearing amongst the colonists. They've advised anyone who isn't a soldier to confine themselves and wear a mask filled with pungent flowers so that the plagues miasma can be blocked out. Now, not only do the plantations grow cash crops, but also large fields of roses, tulips, and the native Poch'il fruits. The company has decided to revisit an old idea and hire Hernan Cortes and his conquistadors for aid in their battle with the Aztec, as he's proven very effective against the natives.

---

The northern colony has decided enough is enough, and after leaving much of the doctors and clerics behind to help the natives, many of the colonists have left with the ships, leaving behind only a few healthy soldiers and farmers. Now it less resembles a small village and more of a church/hospital that's trying to cure the natives of the confederacy. The company will try to repopulate it in the future, but for now they'll wait until the situation is under control.

Quebec colony still exists, but its lost progress.

---

France has started a new colony right inbetween the Siennese and Portuguese colonies. This has caused some tensions between the two nations as Portugal made no attempts to hide its intent to spread across the coast, and with this new French roadblock in the way, they aren't happy. France seems to be using this new treaty to its advantage already.

War has broken out in Africa as the mamluks have started an invasion of Tunis. The squabbling sultanate, led by Tuman Bay, too afraid of the Persians to the north, have decided that growing along the coast is a better alternative. Tunis, with its allies along the rest of the barbary coast, have banded together against the approaching hoard, launching their corsairs against their ships and soldiers. If that wasn't enough, a third party has joined in on this war, the lost kingdom of Ethiopia beyond Egypt. With the mamluks armies busy on their western front the Ethiopians have taken this opportunity to take battle to their northern enemy.

1519, Death of an Emperor
[Knighthood: Martial, 41+20+10=71]

Guillaume is a little surprised to be called back so soon after departing, he had plans to track down the pirate queen of Morocco Sayyida al Hurra, but he has no issue with working more on establishing the order. Instead of taking his privateer fleet to Pisa or Romagna he instead has them drop him off in Rome, where he hopes to find some old scholars who could help him find templar records in an attempt to find the original oaths of the order, and it works somewhat. There are plenty of secondhand reports on the knights and their oaths from priests and cardinals sent to judge the knights and their holiness, however none actually state the exact words of the oaths, merely a summary of what they swore themselves to.

This can still help however, for as long as it follows the same spirit of the original oaths then it should be good enough, at least that's what Guillaume writes in his letters. The most important aspects, according to Guillaume's research at least, were the oaths to poverty, so as to not become corrupted by the wealth they had control of, obedience, both towards, the grandmaster and the church but God above all, and chastity. The original order had some extreme thoughts towards women which Guillaume believes a bit excessive, as apparently the knights wouldn't even acknowledge a woman's existence, which Guillaume finds a bit too constrictive. The oaths could do with a little modernizing he believes, and the chastity vow could be replaced with something more relevant. There were also a great number of rules that the order had to follow, multiple hundreds of them, and Guillaume does not want to go to the effort of making so many rules from scratch so he's going to largely copy what he remembers from the hospitallers. While it isn't the quick or easy solution Guillaume was hoping for, this is still a good start for the oaths and laws of the order. He's sent copies of what he's found to Reynard so that they might work on that ion the future, but for now Guillaume is going to work on gaining the approval of the Roman pope.

When you gave your stewards funds to pursue what projects seemed like a good idea to them, you can't say you expected what Illario did. He purchased a large patch of arable land and started building a university of sorts, though much smaller and more focused than the ones of Pisa or Modena. He says that he intends to plant, or at least have servants plant, the various strange and exotic plants found in the new world to see if they can grow in Italian soil. However this isn't something for profit, as the quantities of the plants will be relatively low, as they are grown so that they might be studied. "We have no idea what these plants are capable of, they could be poisonous, miraculous, or valuable, and I don't want to be blindsided by them." Is his reasoning. He still waits on shipments of seeds from the colonies, as well as alchemists, doctors, and scholars that would know more of this sort of thing then he would, not to mention skilled farmers and workers to maintain the fields for him. whether this school of nature will be useful or not, who knows, but he's enthusiastic at least.

[How Bazaar: Stewardship, 86+20+15=121]

Djangos project, on the other hand, is much more expected, the expansion of the merchants district into a large merchants bazaar. While bazaars aren't quite a common thing this side of the Bosporus, nobody can really complain about the expansion and improvement of the merchants quarters, so long as the merchants maintain ownership or the lease of where they had their stalls or shops originally. Given the bazaars proximity to venetian markets as well, it could become a respectable second destination for merchants and travelers once its finished. It also would simply improve the quality of Ravenna's markets as well as the quantity. Not only will it improve domestic trade, but the light fee placed upon all these various markets to operate can't hurt either.

[Repairs: stewardship, 63+11+15=89]

While construction may not be Elena's area of expertise, she does understand walls and fortifications, so when she's sent to work on Parmas repairs that's what she starts on. The walls of Parma, destroyed as they are, leave Elena little to work with, so she starts from the ground up, not only focusing on making the new walls, but improving or tearing down the old ones as they had proved insufficient. Doubled thickness and stronger towers to house cannonry should hopefully prove enough to fend off further assaults, at least long enough for someone to engage the besieging army. She doesn't quite enjoy the experience, but its simple work that doesn't have her worrying over steam pressure or demon rings, so shell take it.

[Testing: Intrigue, 16+20+17=53]

[Anacletos: Prowess, 94+20=114]

Before you send Arnao and his crows to try and rob Mont St Michel, you have Arnao return to Italy, both so that he may resupply on anything they could possibly need to pull off the heist, but also to test the defenses of the castle you had made for its defense against assassins. He is to attempt to break in at night and reach you without the guards knowledge, finding any weakness in its defense and exploiting it so you can learn where you need to improve. It goes wrong very quickly.

Arnao arrived at night to the castle and its surrounding village, where he talked with the villagers about the local area, pumping them for info that could be used against the guards. He learned from one of the village youths that there was a small path up and over the mountain that they would challenge the other kids to climb, but ever since the castle was built they haven't been able to use it anymore. That doesn't stop Arnao however, finding the path, marked by red strips of cloth, that led up over the top and almost directly over the walls of the castle. From there he entered in by the rooftop where a door had been left unlocked. This is where the trouble began, because as soon as he went through that door, he found himself face to mask with a gladiator fiddling with a smoke pipe. You had sent off Arnao before Anacletos was hired, so the two had near zero knowledge of each other, so all Anacletos knew was that a strange man was trying to enter the castle through the roof, and desired company didn't really do that, so he did the first thing that came to mind. He charged the surprised spy, grabbed him, and continued his charge to the edge of the roof and threw the spy over its edge into a pile of snow and hay. A quick command to the guards on the ground and Arnao was pulled out, dazed and hurt from his fall, thrown in shackles, and thrown into the cells of the castle. You were soon awakened and told what happened, and it was an embarrassing thing to admit you had set this up on purpose. Anacletos tried to apologize but Arnao was not happy with his little flight down to the ground. According to a doctor he should be fine after some rest as the hay softened the blow, but he wouldn't recommend the man move around much.

[Salon: Intrigue, 85+20+17=122]

You give Sophia the funds so that she can finally start up this salon of hers. While it would largely be a place for the rich and influential to gather, the important thing is the servants. As previously said, they go unnoticed by everyone, so who better to act as spies and saboteurs. They will be trained as servants first, and those who show promise will be given further training, in language, infiltration, and disguise, something of a lighter version of the crows. Where the crows were more assassin and hunters, these are focused more solely on gathering information and going unseen. She's even taken to calling them "sparrows", more as a taunt to Arnao and the crows then any actual tie to the birds, but the names started to stick.

The meloda Salon has started, though its still in its infancy.

[Research: Learning, 41+20+18-10=69]

You decide to try your own hand at using this ring of Solomon, to see what you can learn from it while using your sixth sense. Just looking at it you see tendrils of gold seeming to leak and wave off the ring in its chest. You pull it out and place it upon your left ring finger. Already it starts to affect where its placed, a tingling where it touches skin that you expect to worsen when you use it yourself. Perhaps the copper and iron it had on it originally had mitigated this, you might hire a smith to re encase it, but for now you must bare it. If its anything like the apple it merely needs will to use, so with a flex of your hand you will it to summon one of these "demons" from the ring and from Solomon's list. He listed them in something of a feudal structure, with kings, counts, and knights, so you decide to start small with this warrior Kimaris. The ring starts to burn as golden light, intermixed with multiple symbols recorded in Solomon's writings, start to form into an angelic figure upon a black warhorse. It pantomimes at how a horse and man would act, seemingly awaiting command. You take your non ringed hand and try to push it through this demon, and after some resistance it pierces through, erratic light coming from where your hand breaches its hide. Its inside seems to be nothing, a slight warmth and heat from the light being all that makes up the creature. As the ring continues to burn against you finger you pull your hand out and disperse the illusion. While not being a real creature it holds some weight to it, and could possibly even cause damage to someone, though you imagine that if you were to use it a crusade might be started. You rip off the ring, red marks left where it had touched, like skin left too long in the sun. you lock it away once more, not in the crypt but in a safe you've had installed within your castle. Its less hidden but you've already had Belotti and Elena work with it or the writings so its already not as hidden as the apple or shroud.

From sienna you've heard the news, that the great artist and engineer Leonardo da Vinci has passed. Surrounded by friends and loved ones he left this world, some say to hell for his ill regard for the church. A grand funeral was held by the Auditore family alongside a grand celebration for the mans life and creations. You are invited, though you allow Lupo to take your place as he wishes to see the city and your relationship with the Auditores is still somewhat strained. His wife goes along with him, though less as his wife and more a representative of the Medici as they had worked with Leonardo as well before their fall to Savonarola. Lupo also takes with him some of the paintings Leonardo had done during his work for your family that had been forgotten by him when he left, as he assumes the Auditore would be the most likely inheritor. Ezio gives him his thanks, and tells your son that he is welcome in sienna so long as he doesn't take too much after the rest of his family, not elaborating on what that means when your son asks.

Emperor Maximillian, King of the Romans, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, and patriarch of the Habsburg family, has passed this year early into January. Loved by the people as the finest emperor they've had since Charlemagne, a skilled warlord and politician, widely regarded as the last true knight, he will be missed. After a week of mourning already do the nobles vie for power and influence in the hopes of being elected as the new holy roman emperor. His grandson and heir to Austria and already lord of the Netherlands duke Charles once again makes himself one of the main choices, always in line to inherit, perhaps this time he shall succeed. Louis Jagiellon of Hungary and Bohemia is also trying to gain support for his ascension to the throne. Francis as well, though some inheritance of his, also has some claim on the title, though his is an uphill battle for the title. The Bavarian duke, the lord of Brandenburg, the count of Meckleburg, everyone lord of some power is trying to convince the electorates of their right to rule. Hopefully they will elect someone with some sense and won't devolve into the multi year debates of Napoli.

Speaking of the Germans, a strange movement has begun amongst its citizens and a small number of its nobles, demanding a reformation of the church in response to the ongoing papal conflict as well as the abuse of the office and the churches powers. The two main arguments these reformists, unofficially led by a priest by the name of Martin Luther, is that the sale of indulgence is a corrupt practice that provides no salvation and damns the pope who would sell these lies, and that the act of belief in god is all that is needed for salvation, not the duties demanded by the church. Of course this isn't the end of the movements demands, far from it as they find issue with more and more things each day. It wasn't enough for there to be just one split in the church, but now another is forming.

In the Barbaras colony Hernan Cortez has finally arrived, and with him every conquistador and cannon he could bring. He's already proven his skill many times, leading the company soldiers and militia into a series of victories over the Aztec. His tactics prove incredibly effective, though it is a scorched earth campaign, bringing fire and fury to those he fights, and slapping irons on those who survive, a part of his payment. He's taken much of the lands up to the city of Teotitlan, the land of the gods according to translators, Hernan has declared that soon it will be the land of the one true God once he is through with the Aztec, though apparently it isn't actually an Aztec city if the translators are correct.

You've sent a letter to Wallachia, to Apollonio, for his 12th birthday, along with a few presents from yourself and Lupo. According to Ruxandra the boys become something of a shadow for her spymaster vali, trying to imitate and copy his every move, and taking in his every lesson, both in the arts of intrigue as well as the history of his home. He's also calmed down from his chaoticness when he was younger, though that may have been for the worse as now he can focus his devious nature. Regardless, the boy is happy and healthy, and that's good enough for you.

1519, the Birth of a New Templar
[How Bazaar: Stewardship, 86+20+15=121]

Work on Djangos Bazaar continues quickly and smoothly. The massive market building is rather simple to construct, for the most part its like building long halls and small rooms flanking it, so the cost of the project doesn't come from its complexity but merely its size and scope as it spreads through much of the merchants district. Many of the merchants along the newly constructed areas are given some fairly hefty payments to keep them fed and clothed while they are temporarily pout of business, as well as the promise of lowered taxes and tariffs on their goods once the work is done, which keeps even its biggest critics hushed. Once the construction is complete and its time to decorate this bazaar Django plans to use the lapis lazuli found a few years ago and marble for much of its coloring, though you ask him to be somewhat subdued with it.

The fields are finally ready for Illarios planting, or rather his employees planting, of the various crops of the new world. Maize, Tomate, Patata, Vanilla, cacao, Tobacco, Para, any seed that he can get from the new world company is given its own plot of land for it to grow. Now comes the hard part according to Illario, finding scholars knowledgeable about plants and vegetation who want to work on his project. Working with Belotti as the nearest member of the academia, he finds a few leads on some men in Spain and France who may be open to joining this endeavor, now Illario hopes he can convince them before the first harvest comes in.

[Privateering: Martial, 43+20+10+24+5=102]

Once again Lupos sent out to do what he's skilled at and hunt pirates. Told to return either in the face of excessive danger or via letter telling him to return, he and his small fleet head off towards the Bosporus rather than the barbary coast, as the first time he interfered in their wars was an accident, and he doesn't want to gain a reputation from attacking peoples ships in the middle of a war, bit dishonorable and would paint a target on his back. The black sea is filled with ottoman privateers, Crimean corsairs, and hopefully friendly Georgians and Circassians who would aid him, as well as make him some allies in the orthodox east. Already he's sent some letters home telling of his meetings with Circassian tribes having issues with their northern neighbors, and his promise to help defend them from the Cossacks while he can in exchange for docking rights in their lands.

Lupos making friends in the black sea, for now.

---

[Bandit hunting: Martial, 36+21=57]

Bandits are an ever present problem of the modern world, skulking in the woods and shores of Italy, preying upon any that enter their sight, so its always a good idea to go and shake them up every now and then so they don't feel as safe and secure. The road patrols can only do so much of course. So you order Varga to take whatever men he needs and hunt down what he can find, pirate, bandit, raider, or whatever other types of criminal he may find, of which there are many. He takes a few dozen musketmen, cavalry, and plenty of spearmen into the northern territories. Hopefully a few crushed bandits will make the others rethink their line of work. The guards meanwhile are incentivized to do their jobs well, each bandit head they take meaning an extra florin for each man, keeping them motivated and working together.

---

[Spys: Intrigue, 78+20+17=115]

Expanding the swallows proves tricky. Salons don't really expand into new locations, so Sophia can still only recruit from the population of Ravenna. What she can do is open up the recruitment some more, make it appealing towards more citizens as a career and thus increase her recruitment pool. This does some work to expand the sparrows, but time is the main factor right now, so that she can actually find and train the promising candidates from the salon. Right now she's only had a few of her first recruits "graduate" from their training, so patience is needed.

---

[Preparation: Intrigue, 94+20+17=131]

Once Arnaos mostly healed up from his fall you send him off with what supplies he needs and the coin to get what he can't leave with. Ropes, hooks, lockpicks, the various tools of the thieving trade he takes with them, while on site he is to purchase disguises and access. There's some confusion when you ask if he intends to hire or purchase a boat, but this soon clears itself up. He had said the church was surrounded by water, but only the low waters of a marsh, not open sea, a ship is really not needed, or even useful. Even a simple rowboat wouldn't be of help. With that cleared up he sets off back north towards Rennes where he left the crows. Once the order is given, they will strike.

+10 to the heist roll.

---

[Repairs: Stewardship, 4+14+15=33]

Giovanni's trip to Parma is uneventful as can be. He travels with Varga and his Bandit hunters up towards Parma, and from there takes over Elenas workers. Its from there where misfortune strikes. As the workers are digging up the foundations of the old and irreparably damaged walls, one strikes something, believed to have been an undetonated barrel of powder from one of the early attempts at sieging the city, and an explosion rips away both stone and flesh. With a fourth of the workers dead or injured and a newly collapsed portion of the wall, Giovanni's work starts off on a poor first step.

---

[Roads: stewardship, 24+15=39]

Its not just Giovanni's progress that is stunted by the explosion, as those working on the road are called in as extra hands to help with the rescue and clearing of the blast zone. This causes something of a setback for its progress, though thankfully no one of this crew finds themselves blown away by packed powder. Once they're done helping Giovanni's crew they get some minor work done on the road, but it is obviously less then what could have been done.

---

[Deciphering: Learning, 42+20=62]

Belotti continues his work deciphering the last of the writings, but Solomon got far more esoteric and metaphorical with his latter writings on the shards. Whether it was an attempt to hide what he knew better or simply becoming more dramatic towards the end of his writings, Belotti says it could be either, it leaves little actual information to be gathered. Belotti continues to try deciphering the work, calling in favors among his colleagues for aid in its deciphering, as well as context for some of these metaphors used, but little progress is made for now.

---

[Engineering: Learning, 67+20=87]

Elena continues her work on making a light wheelock musket that doesn't break itself, and it proves much more difficult than it would sound. The barrel and wheelock are already heavy enough as is, and the blast is typically too strong for many lighter woods that would be used in a gunstock. Eventually she just buys one of the Ottoman calivers from a trader of the league to tear apart and figure out their tricks. It takes some time but eventually she manages to cobble something together that sheds a good few pounds off of the weight of the gun, at least once enough are built to arm your forces. The new designs are given to the engineers, and after a slight adjustment period they start to slowly get churned out.

---

[Trade: Stewardship, 16+10=26]

The Neapolitans seem to have no wish to trade with their neighbors across the papal border. When you send Machiavelli to negotiate a trade deal, which isn't his specialty, their King Trasana politely replies that they have no wish to make any deals at this time with their Italian neighbors. Machiavelli tries to change his mind but the young king stands firm in his decision, and gives little reason as to why he would refuse. Machiavelli returns to Firenze with little to show for his efforts.

---

[Knighthood: Martial, 25+20=45]

Guillaume is not possessed of a skill for writing nor a way with words, so his attempts at writing out the laws and oaths of the order are a bit of a mess to say the least. Multiple times he rewrites something he's already stated or his wording is unclear. This ends with him seeking out the help of Machiavelli, his skill with a quill being undeniable and his way with words being far superior to Guillaume's own. The two eventually cobble together something that at least seems to be a respectable code and law, while also adding in laws for their naval aspects as that's been ingrained into Guillaume and his knights from their time with the hospitallers.

When Lupo returns to Ravenna you are surprised as you hadn't sent any letter to request him back. You are even more surprised to hear that Juan came to Ravenna the very same day. You make The trip from the castle to Ravenna, arriving a day later to find the two already preparing to leave. You ride towards the villa and catch the two in the middle of talking, Lupo surprised to see you, Juan not so much. "Juan, might I ask you what it is you are doing here? And Lupo, why have you returned?" Lupo starts to speak but Juan raises his hand to pause him before speaking. "I sent a letter to Lupo asking him to return to Ravenna so we might speak. His ships are still out there, under the command of one of his subordinates. Since you seemed to be hesitating to induct him into our order, I've taken it upon myself to do it in your stead."

You are surprised to hear this, surprised and angry. "I would have told him brother, I was merely waiting for the right time. You had no right to go behind my back to do this!" "As Grand Master of the roman rite, it is completely within my right. When would you have told him Valentino? The next time some assassin came to slit his throat? When you needed to cash in his recruitment to seem like you were contributing? Or would you have put it off until your death, leaving him without any guidance towards our struggle? It is better that he learns sooner so he might grow accustomed to all this. Or would you rather the Auditore either kill or induct him into their own order while you let the chance pass you by?"

"The Auditore aren't a problem, my truce with the assassins still holds and I doubt they would have tried anything." "Do you think they would still respect this agreement when you are dead and in the ground? That it will hold weight when they start to feel threatened? That is the only reason they've respected this truce, because they nearly destroyed us. The moment we are strong enough, which I've painstakingly been working on since father passed, they will turn on you and your children. And even then, the foreign assassins hold no such treaty, a reminder of which can be seen on your sons face. A bit lower and your son would have had a slit throat. He needs to know about us and them so something like that won't happen again.

And don't you worry about having to teach the boy, as I will personally see to his education. I'm bringing him with me as I travel north so I can tell him what I know. There's to be a meeting between King Francis and King Henry and the many other lords and knights of their lands in Balinghem , and I felt your son would do well to participate. If were lucky we can keep that lout henry from changing sides once more. I will keep the boy safe, of that you have my word, but there will be no discussion as to his attendance."

You can't believe your brother would do something like this, Cesare maybe but not Juan, he was never so confrontational before. You turn to Lupo to see what he has to say, and Juan waves his hand as approval to let him speak as he leaves the villa. Lupos quiet a moment, perhaps feeling shame or anger keeping him from talking, before saying "Father, I have a lot of questions, too many, to ask you, but I fear that if I asked them now they would come out twisted and scornful. When me and uncle Juan have returned I might have found the right words and questions to ask, but for now I feel its better to keep myself quiet. I'll be sure to keep myself and uncle safe." You try to talk to him, but he is certain to keep himself quiet. He gathers his things, his sword, and his armor, and fetches his horse from the stables to follow after Juan on their journey.

The French disease has begun to infect the people of san marino. Likely brought by one of the mercenaries of the city during some excursion in France, he has brought it back with him, and from there it already spreads amongst the less savory members of the city. Those doctors that didn't wish to travel to the new world have found themselves treating a much different plague.

Lord Charles of the Netherlands and Austria has been elected to follow his grandfather as emperor of the holy roman empire. He has inherited quite the precarious position, what with the reformation movement spreading in his lands and the churches less then appreciative response to them. With his rise to power comes many questions, how will he rule, what will he pursue, will he try to claim Spain and Naples, claiming his other grandfathers lands as rightfully his and stolen by the Spanish. Will he join in on the colonial surge? Only God knows, or at least that's what people hope with the strained church.

The Field of the Cloth of Gold
Your head is still trying to come to terms with what your uncles told you. That your family is all a part of this strange organization, that these templars have been at war with assassins for longer than anyone can remember, that these assassins are the ones who continually attacked your family when you were a child and tried to kidnap or kill you. How this organization It's a lot, and thankfully Uncle Juan gives you the time you need to go through it in your head, at least until you first arrive in Verona. "Alright nipote, I'm going to gather up some of my retainers for our journey, it will be a long trek and whether we go through the Empire or France I fear well face no end of trouble on our own. Why don't you go see Isabel, huh? It's been many years since she's seen her little cousin, and I bet she could help you get some clothes rich enough to not make you stand out. We should be setting out in a week, so feel free to take your time, just not too much. I'll take your horse and luggage, so just enjoy yourself." And with that the cyclops rides towards Castel San Pietro, leaving you to wander this strange venetian city.

Ravenna is great, its your home and where you grew up, but the venetians certainly know how to make a beautiful city, and they have, or rather had, the coin to make their cities lavish. Even while it still bears some scars from the war, it is something beautiful. You wander the city for a good few hours, just taking in the sights, some greater then others, some not there at all. even now, these visions you see plague your sight, symbols or creatures that you know cannot be there but infect your mind. You do your best to ignore them and block them out, but it seems the local vagabonds noticed your discomfort. You were walking down the streets and alleys, making distance between yourself and the visions, when a trio of men, around your own age, perhaps a little older, dressed in finery and with blades at their hips began to encircle you.

Their leader, sharp faced with a spattering of freckles, is the first to talk "Well friends it would seem yet another foreign Stolto has found himself prancing around our home as if he owned the place. Do you think that just because that dead emperor put that Borgian Bastardo in charge makes you welcome? It's insulting, to ourselves and every mercenary and militia man who died." One of his friends, stocky and bearded chimes in, this act of theirs scripted and practiced from his tone, his words not quite natural or his own. "Now just how can this man make up for his transgressions? I see a coin pouch, that sword on his hip is certainly a thing to see, or maybe we take the fancy clothes off his back, get some coin for pawning them and the fun of humiliating him as well?" The leader cuts back in from there. "I believe all we needs is his coinpouch, might as well leave the bastard some bit of his pride, show we're more gentlemanly than he and his kind are." From the hand at the hilt of his sword, a milanese falchion from the looks of it, that's obviously the que where he expects you to hand it over.

You give them all a look over, your sight pointing out weakness or opportunity. The large one, despite his size, is the least comfortable here, his hand crushing the grip on his blade. The leader appears calm but his nerves are getting to him, worried you might draw your blade. The quiet one, tall and wiry, is the most comfortable among them, his grip on his sword professional and ready to draw, possibly a former soldier or mercenary, the biggest threat. A plan starts to form in your head, so you enact it. You let out a defeated sigh and pull your coin pouch off your belt, and make sure its tied closed. The leader starts to move towards you, hand outstretched to take the pouch. Instead of giving it to the loaf you throw it as hard as you can into the face of the tall one, and are proud to hear a wet crunch as it impacts his nose. You draw Chrysaor in a flash, grabbing the leaders outstretched hand before he can pull it back and pull his face right into the pommel of your sword. A slice to the leg is all it takes to send him to the ground after that. The portly one, just now actually managing to draw his blade, charges you, a dodge to the side leaves him tripping over the body of his leader. The soldier finally recovers from the coin to the face and draws his own sword, from the looks of it a hunting sword, and advances towards you, blade ready. You instead grab the dropped falchion and fling it in his direction. Swords obviously aren't made for throwing, at least none that you are aware of, but a thrown sharp piece of metal is still enough to be a distraction for you to rush to his side and stomp down at his knee, forcing him to drop where it is much easier to place your blade at his neck, where he quickly drops his blade in surrender.

"If this is the best that you venetians had to offer than it is a miracle you have not been conquered yet. Take your friend there to a doctor while you can so his leg can be treated, and remember what happened here the next time some fool idea gets lodged in whatever parody of a mind you have." You remove the blade from the soldiers neck and shove him away before moving towards the coin pouch, keeping an eye on the venetians, then begin your trek towards uncles castle. You make sure to travel the main streets from there, now wishing to have anymore unwelcome surprises from the populace. As you walk your mind starts to drift towards what you remember of Juans family. He was married younger than father, and has quite a few more kids, and even grandkids now from on of the twins. Isabel, his third child, was about 3 years older than you and always acted like the wise older sibling the few times you had seen her, though her wisdom was often in question to you. Still, she was always pleasant to be around and managed to make even the most boring of days at least somewhat fun.

It takes some time to find her once you finally reach the castle, leaving you to ask the servants where she could be, leaving you following a twisted trail to find her not even in the castle but on her way towards the arena, which was being used for a performance. You find her on the street just about to enter the arena so you need to chase her down to get her attention before she enters. "Isabel! Isabel, please stop, it's your cousin! I really don't want to track you through the arena so please stop!" she manages to notice you just before she enters, and stops and waves while you jog over. "Little Lupo! It's been so long since I saw you, how have you been?" she's says as she grabs you and pulls you into a hug before dragging you with her into the arena. "I've been well Isabel. Me and your father are to head north to oversee a meeting between the French and English kings, he said you could help to look the part of someone who belongs there, apparently my armor isn't enough." Isabel looks almost offended you even thought to wear the armor, and she soon confirms those feelings. "Of course you cant wear armor there, do you want to look like any random mercenary or do you want to look equal to kings? Once this performance is done I'm dragging you to my tailor, signore Vigo, you'll love him. He'll get you something in cloth of gold fitted in no time, I promise."

True to her word after the performance, which was a rather dreadful morality play from the church, she dragged you to this Vigo who had you measured and choose the type of clothes you'd want, a more simple black and gold brocade doublet with matching everything, as demanded by your cousin. You secretly asked that it also be made to survive being worn under at least a cuirass, you'd feel naked without at least some protection and the cuirass you….borrowed from your father is certainly fine enough to be worn openly and help paint you as someone more knightly. From there your cousin drags you, sometimes literally, through the streets of Verona to every little place she's come to enjoy after her fathers take over. this is how much of the week plays out, before finally your outfit is done and your uncle is ready to go. You and his retainers, a mixture of guards and advisors that are members of these templars as he tells you, begin your journey going up the alpine mountains of the Swiss then through the Burgundian lands of the H.R.E.. You notice the effects of this "Reformation" movement even through the small villages you pass through, the churches now seeing more visitors, not for absolution but for debate and demands for change from many burghers and even a few knightly individuals. Once you enter France though it becomes a much less active presence, not for the lack of a spread into France, but for the armored boot that stamped down on it. Pope Gabriel has declared it a heresy that must be eradicated before it corrupts the people of France, and has let loose an inquisition of his own upon it. According to uncle and his letters with the leaders of the French templars, the king is supported by both the Avignon church and assassins, but despite the assassins attempts to infiltrate the church and reign them in, the pope is too zealous to accept anything less than catholic dominance anywhere. He suspects they may even assassinate the pope if they cannot control him. "This is what the assassins truly are, rats skulking in the shadows, ready to kill even those that should be their allies if they don't fit their views of the world. Even though I don't agree with their pope, to kill him would cause nothing but further chaos though I imagine they see that as a boon for them." The journey in France is far less pleasant then that of the H.R.E., not for anything that happens, but for the unnerving feeling of being watched. Uncle told you that it had been a French assassin that gave you your scar, and that they are more than happy to finish what they started, so your head is on a swivel the entire time, leaving you ill rested.

When you finally arrive in Calais, in Balinghem, that tension starts to ease, only to be replaced by the anxiety of being surrounded by the vast amount of lords and nobles of England and France, each and everyone bedecked in gold. Gold cloth, jewelry, gilded swords, gilded barding, gilded tents, if one were to gaze upon this valley from a distance one would assume a sea of gold had sprung from the earth. You had thought Isabel to be overstepping in the outfit but now you feel you might look out of place for not being more golden. Ships fill the sea inbetween the French and English coast, large and proud, some even bearing the marks of the docks of Ravenna, one could walk between the two lands from the sheer amount of wood and sail between the two if they had the drive. Juan shakes you from the sight, even more unbelievable with the visions you see throughout of similarly golden beasts and men, and tells you "Help the retinue with setting up tents, we will be settled next to some fellow templars from France and England, look for the red crosses to know who is our ally. I'm to meet with some fellow members of the order that have come from the Netherlands. Once we're both done I intend to meet with the kings of both lands and I want you there with me, though only speak when spoken to, they are kings after all." and off he rides for the northern part of the camps. You and his retinue eventually find some tents with the red cross hidden in their patterns, the tents belonging to one John Davenport, a British low noble. A flash of their signet rings to him and his retinue is all it takes to let him know that you were allies. With that settled you set up your tents and await your uncles return.

Its around two hours later and one hour into a game of cards with davenport that your uncle returns. "Lupo, go change into the clothes Isabel got you, then well be off to meet the kings. Signore Davenport, my thanks for allowing us to neighbor you for the coming weeks." Davenports Italian isn't the greatest, but a quick word with a translator and his thanks is returned while you and your uncle go to your separate tents. White velvet shirt, gold and black doublet on top, White breeches with yet more black and gold slops over top, reaching down past the knee and panneled. High quality and high reaching boots cover the breeches, leaving nothing more then the slops visible to the eye. One of the retainers helps you to make sure it all looks right, and as soon as he's gone you put on the cuirass of your father, blackened metal with gold eagles upon its chest, waist, and at the shoulders. Looking at yourself in a bronze mirror you believe you look quite nice. When Juan sees you you don't think he's quite as pleased. "Fine, wear the armor, just remember what I said, only speak when spoken to, understood?" "I understand uncle, now let's go meet them before the sun goes down."

The two of you first go towards king henrys "palace", nearly 12,000 square yards of brick foundation sectioned into four blocks surrounding a central courtyard with 30 ft high walls of cloth on timber frames, painted to look like brick and the top continues the illusion, the slanting roof painted to resemble slats of lead. Large Expanses of glass are placed in the canvas walls, giving free view of all the surrounding valley. The entrances each have masoned archways with towers at their edges, all of which were carved with images of ancient princes such as alexander and Hercules and filled in with gold. If nothing else king henry certainly prepared every piece of extravagance he could to impress all visitors, and it was working. Two fountains of red wine are in the "courtyard" of this palace, and the wine does flow. Golden ornaments and decoration cover every inch of the palace, and a choir sings every hour to the delight of its hearers. Once inside you believe yourself to see more of your hallucinations when you spot two golden creatures, monkeys you believe, chaotically running about, only to see everyone else react to them, and one even have his hat stolen by them to the amusement of all, especially the king.

After some waiting the kings servants finally allow you and your uncle to approach. Thanks are given for the invitation to speak, and Juan tries to get some words in regarding henrys hopes for the meeting between himself and Francis, as well as to somewhat subtly speak about templar matters, but it seems you've caught his attention. "Who's this to come into my palace armored in such fine steel?" following your uncles command to speak only when spoken to. "I am Lupo Borgia-Romana King henry, son of Valentino Borgia-Romana of Romagna, it is an honor and a privilege to meet you." "Ah stuff the honor and privilege. Is that armor for more than show or did you think it paired well with your clothes?" "Its real as can be sir, I felt more comfortable with some armor on than in naught more than golden silk." "Do you mean to say your something of a warrior, a knight?" there's some tension in the air at his words, the rest of the nobility still make their small talk but you can feel their eyes looking your direction. "I've no knighthood sir, but I consider myself a warrior and honorable man all the same." Henry looks at you, looks into you, for an uncomfortable moment, before breaking into laughter. "Then we'll do something about that. Take part in the coming tournaments and should ye do well I'll see if I can get you invitation to the order of the golden fleece. If you manage to make it far enough I might just have to fight you myself, so prepare yourself well friend." With the mood lightened Juan is finally able to get some words in with the king, and soon the two of you are off for your tents.

The next day comes and with it the time to meet the French king. Before your arrival Juan pulls you aside and tells you "We are not here for mere pleasantries this time. While I speak with the King I need you to keep an eye out for anyone that resembles an assassin. Look for missing fingers, hidden blades poking out of their sleeves, or anyone too interested in our talks." His palace is more real, though the English one cannot be denied its splendor, an hours ride from the field. It is much the mirror image of the English encampments, gold and gild abound for all to see. Entrance to the palace takes quite some time before you are welcomed inside, and once in you are led directly to his majesty. Once again a mirror image of the English, there is much talking and festivity with Francis as the centerpiece. "Your Majesty, Duke Borgia of Verona and his nephew Lupo Borgia-Romana are here to meet you." at least that's what you believe the courtier said, your French isn't perfect. "Ah, the remaining Borgias of Romagna. It's been some time since I and your brother and I spoke, I can only hope that my grasp of your language has improved in that time. Come, sit so we may talk more comfortably." You admit, you feel much less comfortable here with the French, you can already imagine that some assassins are among the kings retinue. Your sight seems to paint everyone here as an enemy, though that hopefully is just your nerves rather than truth. Your uncle and the king talk at length about all kinds of topics, from religion to trade to horses while your eyes remain observing the crowd.

[84]

And then you see him. The man who attacked your home. Dressed as some sort of noble or advisor when all he is is a snake. You try to keep yourself from going tense, but the king is perceptive. "Sir Lupo, are you alright? You seem to have something on your mind." He says, a kind smile on his face, a false smile. You pull yourself together and say the first thing on your mind to try and deflect the question. "I am fine King Francis, though worried for my health. I had planned to enter the tournaments but now, having seen your knights and soldiers, I find myself growing nervous, and it is too late to pull my name from the contenders without losing face." A chuckle escapes from the king before he says "Don't sell yourself short now, I'm certain that you have quite some skill as well, and that armor of yours looks to be of sound quality as well, so I'm certain you will do fine." The king returns to his conversation with your uncle, and when you return to looking around, The assassin is nowhere to be found. The two of you soon leave the king and find yourself on the trail back to the valley. "So, did you catch any assassins there Lupo?" uncle says, and you can't help but scan your surroundings before responding. "The man who attacked me, scarred me, he was there, dressed as a noble. I don't know if there were any others but he disappeared after I spoke with the king." A quick curse escapes your uncle before he says "Gautier de Carnellion. He's one of the best in the French brotherhood. If he's here that can't mean anything good. Good job on finding him, he's a slippery Bastardo at the best of times. Ill let the other templars know, spread the message. When we've returned ill have two of my guards moved to your protection, and I wont hear any complaints, understand?"

The next few days are tense, constantly watching over your shoulder, waiting for the kings to finish their business so you can get to the tournament then leave. You spend much of your time training with davenport, both of you planning to take part in the tournament. You admit, your skills at horse back nor with a lance are the greatest, but you hope you can make up for it with your swordsmanship. Eventually their talks are done, the results of which you will only know once everything's over and done with, but with the end of talks comes the tournaments. First is to be the joust, charging each other with lances to either dehorse the opponent or break your lance upon them. Second is to be wrestling, to force your opponent to the ground or force them to yield. Lastly, what you are most excited for, is the melee, an all out fight between every combatant, each armed and armored with their own equipment.

[69]

You do much better than you would have thought in the Jousts, making it halfway through the listings, before finally facing off against Sir Davenport. The two of you saw all of each others techniques, your strategies, and ability during your training, so there will be no tricks to who wins, merely skill and luck. The first pass results in him striking you in the shoulderplate before skidding off, a point for him. the second pass you graze his helmet, granting yourself a point in return. A few near misses are all that come of the next few passes, but eventually you manage a clean hit on his shoulderplate, giving yourself the lead. A lead quickly lost as he once again hits your shoulder for a clean hit. It all comes down to whoever gets the next blow. No matter who wins though, the two of you have certainly given the crowd a show, as cheers and trophies are thrown into the arena. The two of you guide your horses back to the ends of the field, and lock eyes, waiting for the horn to blow. As soon as it's sounded you both spur on your horses, kicking up dirt as you quickly approach each other, each wanting victory. Alas, your lance is just a touch too low and too far too the side, and his is right on target. His lance crack against your shoulderplate, breaking in half and sending shards of wood everywhere, a decisive victory for him. you ride your horse over to the end of the field and toss your lance aside before turning back to where Davenport is celebrating and clap him on the back in congratulations. The loss may sting, but his victory was well earned. It doesn't hurt either the attention your joust garnered from the more fair amongst the crowd.

[91]

The wrestling is a far less elegant event, but still exciting. Thankfully your strength and skill isn't only in the manner of swords, as you find yourself much more of a scrapper than your fellow nobles, tossing a great many to the ground or making them surrender from a grab. A few times your opponents come close to dropping you but you manage to stick through it right up until your one of the last four competitors. You find yourself face to face with a giant of a man, standing a good head and shoulders over you, and you are no dwarf yourself. This man, Henri le Massif, proves to be tougher than old oak, and hurts a lot more than one. You do your best, trying to slip around him to try and pull out his leg, but he barely budges, and instead grabs you, hooks under your shoulder, and throws you around and down to the ground. The air was knocked out of you and you spend a moment or two just getting your bearings before you find yourself being picked up by the giant and given far too rough of a pat on the back while he said something you didn't quite catch in French and helped lead you off the platform, finding you a seat.

[100]

Finally, finally comes the melee, what you were most excited for. A chaotic all out fight between every knight and noble in the land, aside from those who were injured or retired in the preceding competitions. You don your armor, center among it the cuirass, while much of the rest of it is plate made to work around the cuirass. Gauntlets to fit with the Vambraces, couter and rerebrace to fir the pauldrons. Fauld and tasset to protect your waist and fitted underneath the cuirass, cuisses and poelyn to protect the thighs and knees. Sabatons made to work with the greaves. Gorget and helm complete the armor, though its obvious which parts are new. The helmet has a plume of gold and black thread, to match with the rest of the armor. Given how thoroughly you are armored you have no need for a shield, letting you focus entirely on your sword play, and leaving your hand free should you need to grab or punch someone. You march out to the field, surrounded by similarly armed and armored nobility, where soon everyone is arranged, waiting for the horn to blow. You see davenport off on the other side of the field staring down Henri le Massif the poor guy, and the kings are placed into opposite corners from each other, while you are trapped in the center, enemies on all sides. It matters little though as the horn is blown and your senses come alive. You fight like a man possessed by the fury of angels, barely a scratch laid upon you as you forced a large space to be made around you. what knights were nearby tried to work together, but it was for naught, their weapons unable to harm you. One even swung an axe directly at your chest, only for the blade to crack in two against your armor. At last you are left with a single opponent, a knight of no name and no heraldry that you can see. Their lasting to the final two is no flook as you learn as you and him duel. His sword is just as fast, if not faster, than your own, and what strikes you do land do as little damage as his do to you. More and more violent moves are used to try and gain the advantage, techniques that could cause real lasting damage, until finally something breaks. The knights sword snaps at the base, a foot of steel left, after a strike lands. Taking this opportunity you charge him, tackling him to the ground as you begin to bash away at his helmet with the basket of your sword, though he also tries to stab into you with the broken tip of his sword. Eventually though he tosses aside the blade and raises his hands, yielding. A cheer erupts from the crowd and you stagger your way up and forward so that you might take in the moment. Your reward for your victory, delivered by the lady of Calais, is a circlet of gold, seven stars engraved along its length. You're almost greedy enough to wish you had the others as well, the circlet for the joust and for wrestling, each inscribed with different markings, but you'll be satisfied for now.

The celebrations are far too short for your liking, but it is the end of this event. You spend what times is left meeting those who wish to congratulate you on your victory. Henry gives you a letter, detailing where to go if you wish to formally be inducted into the golden fleece, davenport congratulates you for your victory and damns himself for not reaching the end of the jousts, and more importantly, you catch the eyes of many beautiful woman, the greatest hope for any man. Sadly the fun does end as Juan drags you back to Italy, and from there home to Ravenna. The only thing that you do find yourself wondering about is who you faced at the end of the tourney. No one quite knows who he was as he went under the name "The knight of Montenegro" and its unlikely they were actually from Montenegro, a recently split away territory of Serbia, the journey was long enough from Italy so you can't imagine someone coming all that way on their own. Whoever they were you would like to meet them.

[Recruitment: Diplomacy, 14++20+20=54]

With Raphaels recent and sudden death the only one of the three masters left is Michelangelo, so you send Machiavelli find and recruit the man. Its not too hard to find him, as he's currently in Florence, working on a grand tomb for the Medici family. His current work does cause something of a conflict of interests, as he is under contract with the Medici to finish the tomb. The Medici family claims that he works for them until the project is finished, and will not release him from his contract, so even if he does agree to work for the Borgia he'd need to also spend much of his time to finish the tomb. When Machiavelli did approach him the artist was receptive to the idea, saying that so long as the pay is good and he's not restricted too much in his art he'll take on the work.

Recruited the renaissance man Michelangelo, skilled in art and architecture, not engineering

He is busy with the medici tomb so his full attention can't be on Borgia projects for now.

Djangos bazaar continues its creation as smooth as silk. Already many of the merchants and traders have returned to their new and expanded stalls. Most of It's been decorated as lavishly as possible with fine marble, silken banners, and painted stalls, and all that truly remains to finish the project is its expansion into the waterfront for the ease of loading and unloading cargo as well as bringing customers to the bazaar as soon as possible. Djangos honestly surprised at how smoothly it's gone, but he doesn't wish to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Similarly Illarios plantation is doing just as well, what crops are growing are doing well and a few monks and scholars willing to work at the small college of sorts he's built. These scholars have even suggested getting some extra funding by opening it to students in the future, though Illario is hesitant to allow children or teens access, always making a mess of things. Regardless, a little more time and effort and there projects should be fully finished and ready for future use. And, whatever excess yields there are Illario wouldn't be too bothered to sell them off for some extra profit.

[Repairs: 21+14=35]

The repairs to Parma haven't gotten any easier since last year, as the gunpowder barrels proved to have caused even more damage than first thought. The original foundation and even the ground it was on are no longer stable enough to handle the weight of a wall, making it easier and simpler to expand the wall around this hole in the ground, and even once that is done the rest of the walls proves little better. Always there is some complication for repairs, some fault that leaves the work to be started from scratch. The best that Giovanni can say about the work is that at least the Parmesians don't interfere or harass like they might have in Modena, but even then that's merely the lack of complications rather than any real improvement.

When you tell Elena you want her to work on the floating docks its take a moment to remind her of them since its been some time since she had the idea, but thankfully she still has the original sketches and schematics stored away somewhere. When she actually starts to work on the docks however its even more of a disaster. She requisitions two of the heavier ships from the drydock as a base to work on the project, but foul winds, heavy storms, and an infestation of rats make doing any work impossible as the ships are stuck grounded while the pests are removed and the winds die down. She aims to try again in the future but the world just seems to have it out for you right now.

[Heist: Intrigue, 44+10+20+20=94]

You hear about the heist before you get any word from Arnao, that apparently a group of "reformist peasants" had snuck their way in and robbed the abbey of much of its wealth, declaring that the island had grown rich and fat off of donations coerced from the peasantry. Naturally this caused some more tension from the church, but you know that wasn't what truly happened. It's a few weeks later before you get word from Arnao, a letter delivered by one of the crows. He claims the heist was a success, the shroud taken along with various golden trinkets in an attempt to disguise the theft as a more common one. He believes it worked, and that the assassins now seek whoever it was that stole the shroud but don't seem to expect direct templar involvement. Of course he's still being hunted by them, they just underestimate whoever stole it.

For now he plans to take the shroud to somewhere more secure, either with the crows in Spain or the H.R.E. until he manages to lose the hunters, somewhere that the templars can keep it out of assassin hands. You'd rather he brought it directly back to Italy but the other templars might grow suspicious if you told Arnao to bring it directly to you. Now all that remains is the apple that remains in their possession though with little sign of where it might be.

You may let Arnao take the shroud wherever he deems most secure or command him to bring it to Italy

Your attempts at getting to know Belotti are thrown somewhat off course by Belotti himself. He's thrown himself into deciphering Solomon's works and when you try to talk to him he instead enlists you as an alumni of the university, having you rush around to gather whatever he needs for the translations, from old copies of the torah or old manuscripts in hebrew and Aramaic to old cipherbooks and copies of Egyptian hieroglyphs. You grow a bit annoyed at being the one commanded but he seems to have fallen so far into his research that he's forgotten who's in charge. Regardless, little progress is actually made to get to know the professor.

[Hunting: martial, 38+20=58]

Varga and his men continue to hunt whatever bandits lurk in the mountains and plains of Romagna, but aside from some minor groups of bandits nothing and no one of great importance is found. He does hear some news of some men sighted on the Milanese border but he couldn't find anything once there. The lack of finding any great bandits threats isn't necessarily evidence there is none however so he continues on with his hunting.

[Research: learning, 56+20=76]

Belottis research on the later parts of Solomon's writings continues, shedding light onto Solomon's research into the shards. The ring you had collected was one of the personal ones of Solomon, the ring he had used for his magic, but the shards were used for many other creations. Armor that was stronger than anything they had at the time, rings that deflected metal, even a staff that could grant its wielder invisibility. According to him these were powers of the original piece of Eden, now split amongst its various pieces, but the interesting parts were on his techniques for remaking the shards into the new items. He had apparently found an old forge deep in the deserts of the Sahara, that he used to work the metal, that granted him tools of light and fire hotter than any forge so they might be molded into their new forms. Sadly he actively refused to give any details as to its location other than it being from the western desert, unwilling to let that information spread. Still, knowing that these forces exist is certainly a step forward.

From Guillaume's letters he now tries to gain the approval of Pope Honorius, but it's a strange and tricky thing. The pope does not ask for him to prove their faithfulness nor make any concessions to the church, but merely to talk with him and answer multiple questions of philosophy and faith. Guillaume isn't much of a priest nor philosopher, and he knows this, but he does his best to answer the pope as seems right. Not only does the pope ask him these questions, he also has Guillaume aid him, either asking for what he would advise or sending Guillaume to solve a situation as he sees fit. He finds the pope methods confusing and annoying at times, but so long as it gets the order his approval than he's willing to bear it.

Lupo returns from the meeting of Calais with pride in his step, a golden circlet on his head, and a letter from Juan. Inside the letter he gives his estimate of your sons performance, both as a templar and knight, saying he served his role well as his eyes in the French castle as well as keeping good relations with the other templars at the event. As for his performance as a knight the golden circlet on his head should serve better than whatever words he could write. While Lupo was taking the attention of all during the tournaments Juan and his fellow templars were able to prevent the assassins that had infiltrated Calais from either killing their targets or trying to convert Henry or Woolsey to their cause, as seemed to be their plan. A little extra sabotage on his part and the French and English alliance won't be forming, a boon for both the templars and nobility. He also suggests that you allow Lupo greater freedom in the future, no need to stifle him as just a commander of Romagna.

King Christian of the Kalmar union has recently come into major conflict with the lords of Sweden once again. This is the third time in four years they have risen against him, and with each rebellion they grow more proficient at it. He's been putting down these rebellious lords with some trouble, as they are many and there are only so many mercenaries he can hire, but he has slowly but surely gaining the upper hand. He wounded their leader, Sten Sture the younger, mortally and now his wife has been left in charge, and she is not the commander her husband was. This has caused some issue for you as its disrupted much of your trade with the Scandinavians but hopefully it will be over soon.

With the recent actions of the reformist in France and the Avignon papacy's displeasure with the movement, they have declared a papal bull, Exsurge Domine, threatening Martin Luther with excommunication should he not recant his position on the practices of the catholic faith, largely those of indulgences. Luther however seems to hold little care for the French threats however, holding fast and giving not even a single care for the threat nor the sixty day period he is given to do so. This has further degraded French and German relations, faltering as they have been since the election of Charles, as the Avignon papacy has demanded of him to hand over the priest should he not give in to their demands, and Charles has taken quite the similar position to Luther giving not even the slightest care to their threats.

The war with the Aztec has taken a great turn for the colonies, as Hernan Cortes captured their leader Moctezuma after a battle between the two. Sadly that isn't a quick end of the war, as with his capture comes his deposition by his priests, and his brother, Cuitlahuac has been crowned in his place. Still, this is great for morale, and he should prove a great source of information. Should he prove cooperative he may even be allowed to take his throne back as a client kingdom of the colony, with some major changes to the borders of course. Hernan is quickly becoming a hero amongst the colonies, for good and ill. Hopefully once the war is done he will prove a good ally rather than a troublesome but loved noble.

Emperor Charles, with the power he now holds as emperor, has begun to use it to his advantage. He has demanded that Naples and King Trasana either cede the throne to him as the rightful heir or join the H.R.E., with little room given to negotiate. Coming to the aid of Naples, France and Francis have declared that Trasana is the rightful king, both chosen by the nobility and the son of its previous king, and that as a supporter of the Avignon papacy they will protect him should the Germans try to forcefully take the land. Joana of Spain, likewise, has thrown her support behind Naples, as if Charles believes he can take Naples, he would also likely believe he is the rightful heir towards Spain. It seems the treaty of London is already being tested. Whoever it is that throws the first stone, by the treaty, would be attacked by the other signatories, but that depends on the states honoring their agreement.

The league of Byzantium seems to be gaining new members, largely made of those lands or cities powerful enough to split away from their previous rulers. Montenegro from the Serbs, Constantinople from the Thracians, Athens from Achaea. They've also had a few new members join, such as Ragusa and the isle of Crete as it split away from the ottomans. Not only that but the Cossacks of Crimea have pledged allegiance in exchange for support in their defense against Poland and Lithuania. Its growing annoying how many new maps must be drawn for the east, everchanging as it is. This has caused some issues with the ships of yours still aiding Circassia against Cossack pirates, so a quick agreement had to be signed between your ships and the Byzantines not to attack each others ships, but it does little to ease tensions.

With the mid rolls this update there was little to actually write, though the big Lupo adventure makes up for that I think
