1493, A letter of introduction
It has been a month since you had arrived in Ravenna. Upon seeing the state of the city you decided it would be prudent to send a letter off to your father to request another platoon, one of the swiss guard, to help manage and gain control in the province. You received a letter shortly after via runner that they would arrive shortly, but with its been a month and there no sign of them yet. You and your forces, lacking a barracks for them and any form of housing for yourself have set up a small encampment of tents outside the walls, away from the already established shanty towns.

You've spent this first month asking amongst the townsfolk for a man of military experience but found no such luck. Most men with any experience left to seek employment among the neighboring citys in either their guard or amongst their mercenaries. Even among those on the outskirts, groups of romanis and jews unwelcomed in the city proper, you couldn't find anyone with the skill you required.

[Recruitment: Military, 38+10=48]

Just as you are about to retire to bed you feel it, the familiar marching of soldiers and head outside, dagger at your side in case they aren't yours. But then you see them, a platoon of heavily equipped soldiers, armored with gilded plate cuirass and plumed helms, armed with halberds, flamberges, and pistols. Compared to them your own men seem like little more than a small towns militia.

The leader of these men approaches you, a tallish man with a stern face and a short trimmed moustache. "I believe you are Herr Borgia, yes? I must apologize for our late arrival, there was an incident back in Rome. A few bandits had gotten over confident and tried to assault a parish. We had to help hunt the dogs down before coming here. I am Gaetan Ast, leader of these men. Ive also been told by your father that you may require a commander for your forces, so I offer myself as such to you."

You are surprised but thankful for this turn of events, and will need to send a letter of thanks to your father for this. "I will gladly accept your services Signore Ast, I was begging to despair I may never find a commander of quality. Sadly we haven't been able to acquire any permeant housing as of yet so your men will need to set up camps, my apologies." "There is no need to apologize young Herr, I wouldn't want my men to grow soft from some luxurious furnishings anyway, now if you will excuse me I had better introduce myself to the rest of your men."

[Recruitment: Stewardship, 6+15=21]

Sadly it seems that much of your luck has left you in your searches as you cannot for the life of you find a steward. Whether there is one and they simply refuse to acknowledge you or not a one lives within Ravenna you cannot tell but the result is still the same. You resort to posting signs up in the town requesting the services of a steward, largely near the portside of the city for any travelers coming through. For the time being you'll need to take care of these matters yourself.

---

[Recruitment: Intrigue, 86+17+20=123]

One morning, you find yourself outside your tent, eating a breakfast of freshly picked apples and slicing parts off with your dagger, racking your brain on how to go about recruiting a spymaster. It seems somewhat foolish to leave up signs as you did for a steward, ruins the secrecy that is somewhat necessary for such a position, and it begs for one of those assassins to appear to take on the position then stab you in your kidney or something. Luckily you find yourself not needing to look very far, as they find you.

"Pardon me, You are lord Borgia, yes?" you hear someone, a greek woman from the sound of her, say. Only slightly startled you grab your knife and turn towards them. You see a woman not much older than you, dressed in a colorful dress in a byzantine style (you only recognize it as Lucrezia had pestered you to buy her one for her birthday), dark curling hair falling down to her shoulders, and green-grey eyes that seem a little too amused by your moment of shock.

"Yesh, I mean, yes?" you say quickly swallowing your piece of apple. "My apologies for startling you my lord, my name is Sophia Meloda, I have only just recently arrived here from Constantinople and sought to introduce myself to its young lord." Strange how she had already known you were lord here, it had only been perhaps two months since your arrival, it couldn't have reach Constantinople that quickly could it? Just in case you keep your hand on your dagger, and send a look over to Kostas and he rests his hand on his axe and shield, just in case.

"So, Signorina Meloda, may I ask what brings you to my city? There is not much to it yet and there are better ports if one wishes to travel to Italy, what's so special as to bring you here?" you ask putting on your best friendly governor face while being riddles with suspicion. "Why you of course, my young lord." Okay no this is danger you do not trust this your sixth sense is starting to flare abort abort abort. "Mutual allies have told me that you had recently joined our little order, and I deemed it saddening that one so young and innocent was thrown into such dangerous waters alone, so I came to give my aid freely." She says while showing a ring on her finger with a familiar red cross on it.

Oh. Shes an ally. "Ah yes, that order. Well while im certain I would've been able to fend for myself I appreciate the offer of help, not quite the young or innocent comments however. You don't seem much older than me yourself." At this she only smiles more, a cats smile, playing with some mouse they've caught. "My apologies if I've caused any offense young lord, if anything I am impressed, your father must think highly of you to grant you a lordship at such a young age. Still, I would be remise not to offer my assistance."

You sigh and say "it is true I need some help here, but may I ask what talents exactly you bring?" and you start to tap into your sixth sense, hoping to use it for a short time to see if she is truly what she says or if she lies to you, without waking up the presence. "I am pleased that you ask sir. I am a member of the byzantine rite of our little group, and as you know the world has not been kind to us for many years." And at this she actually seems saddened, and the sense doesn't mark it as a lie. "Due to our recent fortunes we've had to lie in hiding, and even adopt some of the tactics of our enemies. I myself have been raised to excel at them, acts of secrecy and intrigue, and I believe I might just be one of the byzantines best. Infiltration, espionage, assassination, you name it and I will have already done it before you even need to worry."

"While I appreciate the offer I would ask that you only act outwardly when I ask. I am in no real position to deny your help so I welcome you aboard. Im uncertain of what accommodations you may be used to but for now we are limited in where we rest our heads. I can ask a guard to help you set up a tent if you like." "Oh there will be no need little lord, ive found myself a hideaway in your town that suits me just fine, ill get to work setting up a small group of informants in the city, when you have need of me ill know. Do get yourself a proper home though, even surrounded by guards a tent isn't a safe place to be."

[Recruitment: Diplomacy,58+20=78]

Thankfully finding yourself a chancellor was surprisingly easy. You ask among some of the locals and are pointed towards Signore Velimir Zelic, a croation former politician, exiled from his home for having certain opinions that his former lord didn't appreciate. Now he finds himself in an early retirement in Ravenna, acting as a lawyer for its citizens.

You follow the directions given, finding yourself at a modest home on the north side of town. You knock on the door a few times and wait. Eventually you hear someone approach the door and open it, and there standing before you is the lawyer. The man looks almost as old as you father, though in a far better state of fitness. His hair, grey with flecks of white, is starting to retreat from the top of his head and stubble marks his hard lined face.

"So you're that new lord who was asking around about me. Well there's no point in you standing in my doorway like a fool. Come inside and seat yourself." "you already knew I was coming sir?" you ask, surprised. "Of course I knew, some new lordling comes into town, says he's gonna make Ravenna some wonderland and then start asking around about you, people tend to talk about that sort of thing." oh. Well that's fair you suppose. "From what I've heard you need a chancellor, correct? If so I accept." "oh, well yes that is what I came here for, and I appreciate your acceptance, but I must admit I'm surprised you agreed so easily, may I ask why?"

"It's simple, the work these men and women give me bores me. There is little challenge in it and it dulls my mind, at least with you I may have to strain myself and do something of interest." "Well I hope to give you the challenge you seek signore, I'm glad to have you join me." Why can't all recruitments be this easy, no signs no worries just a simple request and acceptance? You thank Zelic for his time and head back to your tent, glad he already has a home so there's no need to set up another tent.

---

[Training: Learning, 82+15=97]

It's been a long time since you've practiced with your sixth sense, largely stopping around the time of the presence appearance. But now you are in a far more precarious situation, and you need every advantage you can get. You shut yourself in your tent and tell Kostas to not let anyone inside. You never had a real way of training the sense, it was like seeing or hearing, something that you just did without much thought, but things are different now.

You puzzle over how to train it before deciding to try and use it in absence of your other senses. You blow out every candle and close the windows, focus to ignore all sensation, and open yourself to that familiar ghostly world. You do this for weeks without much progress. Without much in the way of outward sensation to work off of the sense has some trouble doing much of anything. Hours go by without much change in what you the sense perceives, but at least the whispers and presence aren't there so you feel you're doing something right, and then something changes. You notice what seems like a small flickering ghostly light where you know Kostas to be standing.

Its not much, the light almost going out many times, but its still great progress you feel. While it doesn't give you the information that it would give if he were standing in front of you with light to see him by this is an impressive development. You wonder if you'd still be able to "see" through a thicker wall of stone, but for now you feel this is progress enough, especially once you start to feel a dreaded familiar whispering and rip yourself from the sense.

---

As far as progress goes you think you've done well, you've gained necessary advisors and you still haven't been murdered by some rage filled mob or a murder happy assassin. Go Valentino. These musings are interrupted from outside. "Oh, young lordling, it seems you've grown popular amongst some of the local noble woman. It seems that pretty face has captured more than just the citizens hearts." You hear Meloda say before entering your tent with a letter in a gloved hand.

"Id be carefully with this lady however. It's a letter from Catarina Sforza of Forli, your neighbor inbetween you and Florence, and she is no friend to the Papacy, Borgia, or the templars. She also has a lovely little habit of sending letters rubbed upon the sores of those who carry the plague to those she dislikes, so perhaps you should wear a set of gloves, and then burn them along with the letter. "What is wrong with this woman?" You think, before you thank Meloda, put on a pair of gloves yourself, and open the letter.

"Dear son of the Papal worm,

I see that your father as ever would never take matters into his own hands and instead has sent his spawn into the lands that the papacy had abandoned. If you are anything like your father I can only imagine you will abuse those lands to grow rich and fat, exploiting its citizenry till your hearts content. If you are unlike your father and the rest of your debauched lineage, which I find unlikely, stay your hand from Forli and I will stay my mens swords from your neck. I know what you are and find myself holding little respect for it or you.

If ever you seek to test the might of Forli, come end your life at our walls, destroyed by our cannons or skewered upon our spears. If you truly can find some speck of value to your life flee across the Adriatic, the Mediterranean, and let yourself be forgotten by the eyes of man. May your days be short and your suffering long.

With unending disdain, Catarina Sforza, independent lord of Forli"

1493, Eve of war
Upon the peaks of Mount Titano lie the Three fortress of San Marino. Built on the remnants of ancient roman forts and formerly home to a self proclaimed independent republic of the mountaintops, in recent years the forts have been a group of once mercenaries and now bandits. While technically not a part of Romagna they lie on the edge of your borders, and no one could blame you for removing a bandit stronghold. Soon after receiving The Sforzan letter you decide that fortifications and a center of command would be necessary, so you set off with Captain Ast and your combined forces

[Conquest: Martial, 79+10+18(Ast)+10(Elites)= 117]

The march up the mountain is anything but a pleasant one, fog and later snow and ice do everything in natures power to force you back, but if anything it only makes you more certain of your choice. The ancient fortifications along with these natural deterrents make this one of the most defensible locations in Italy. The only obstacle now is taking it for yourself, and making the locals, if any, accept you as not just another bandit king.

It takes a few days of upward marching before you find yourself in front of the first fort. You see only a single bandit guarding it, marked in their former company colors of red and white so it won't be hard to single them out from civilians. The guard, noticing your approach aims a crossbow towards your group and declares "Halt yourselves churls, this here's the territories of the San Marino free company, state your business then leave." None too polite these mercenaries, you start going forward to speak before Ast stops you and starts to speak to the bandit

"We are the representatives of the governorship of Romagna. We apologize for coming with such a large force but the roads are mighty dangerous these days, and we couldn't leave our cargo unguarded. We've come to bring these gifts to our new neighbors in the mountains of San Marino, so would you be so kind as to bring your leader here so we may give him these gifts?" he says while gesturing towards the crate he had insisted we bring along.

The bandit eyes the gift greedily, before saying "Alright, give me a moment and ill drag him here." And off he goes. You glance towards Ast, wondering if he aims to attack now while the gates unguarded, but he holds his hand up, a sign to wait. Eventually the gate starts to be opened and out comes a man, visibly aged with tufts of grey hair and liver spots on an exposed scalp, but the physique of a man much younger and familiar with battle. His armor is much more complete than the guard on the wall and marked with a sash, you can only assume this is the commander.

"So, ye be soldiers of the new governor up north. Its pleasing to see he respects the other local powers. May we see this gift of yours before we start any talks of peace and support?" the old bandit says "Im afraid I'm supposed to only bring this to the commander of these forces' sir, could you confirm for me that you are him?" "Yes you blasted oaf, I command these men, now show us this gift of yours."

"If you insist." Ast says as he draws his pistol in a fraction of a second and shoots their leader right in the eye. You hadn't seen a man killed before, so the scene is quite a shock for you. the shot is clean, leaving a hole where the mans eye had been and an exit wound out the back. The shot had been so quick you doubt the man even knew he had died. The rest of the swiss guard, taking this as a cue, also draw and shoot the bandits guards, who have little time to react, while your original forces rush through the gate to keep it open and fend off forces there.

Two hours pass before Ast deems that every bandit has been slain, having turned their fort into a slaughtering grounds. He approaches you, blood stained, and says "I shall leave this fort in your hands sir. You take the platoon of guards and hold it while the swiss go to clear the other two forts. We need to get there quickly in case any runner escaped, we cant give them any time to prepare a defense." "Of course Ast, may luck be with you and your men." Ast smiles before saying "Who needs luck when they have skill and gunpowder?" Before signaling for his men to form up and head out.

[Development: Stewardship, 38+15=53]

The forestry project goes well. There had already been some small scale forestry happening before your arrival but that was largely for individual use, personal projects or simply fuel for fire while selling off the extra, but you are able to find enough men willing to do it professionally. Eventually you start getting a small but steady supply of oak for whatever needs you have while the woodsman sell the rest, while you get a small part of the profit.

Development becomes easier (+5 to Development rolls) and forestry gives 15 Fl/turn

[Introductions: Diplomacy, 49+20+18= 87]

You start penning a letter of introduction to the monk of Firenze while you task Zelic with writing one to lord Este of Ferrara. Writing the letter has been a bit of a hurdle, being harder at first then simply doing this in person, but eventually you write up something you find respectable. It doesn't hurt that you have the quite caustic letter of Sforza to contrast against.

While Girolamo Savonarola is not quite leader of the Firenze yet, that role lies with the Medici family, he is quickly taking the power they have held for decades. The Medici have also long rivaled the papacy, but more importantly as Medola tell you, they are allied to the Assassins, using them to keep their hold of the city. If the man is taking this power so easily he must be a man of skill, and someone you should at least start on good terms with.

"Dear Father Savonarola,

I write this letter to you so I may introduce myself. I am Valentino Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI, Governor of Romagna. While you are not yet leader of Firenze your ascension and the deposing of the corrupt Medici seems all but certain now, so I wished to start on an early and good note. While there have been some injustices committed to Romagna by Firenze these acts were under the influence of less enlightened leaders, deeming it permissible by law and God to steal the holy lands of the church.

I believe that we will be able to come to a fair and righteous agreement on the return of these lands once you have taken your place as lord of Firenze. And I would be overjoyed to meet you in person once you have taken your role. When the time comes please do send a letter of invitation, I have heard grand things about the city and would love to see it.

Best regards, Valentino Borgia."

With Zelic also completing his letter, you mark them both with your seal, split in half with one side having the bull of Borgia and the other the eagle of Romagna. You hand them off to couriers and await their response.

---

[Scouting: Intrigue, 8+17+20=45]

You had decided you really needed more information on the city of Ravenna itself. You'd been here over a year now and still knew little about the factions that lived within it. You knew of the clergy here, split amongst the many churches, who had acted as leaders for the citizens when necessary, but none had come forward to meet you. You don't know if they didn't accept your rule and refused to acknowledge you or if they decided that you were a good enough leader and left it all in your hands.

Then there are the criminal elements of the city, and of them you know even less. You have no idea if its one large organization or multiple petty gangs. You don't know how many there could be, what goals other than "get Florins" they may have, or if they even have a leader.

There's also the exiles of the city, the romanis and jews you had camped alongside outside the city walls for a time. While technically not a faction "of the city" due to your citizens actions they should not be ignored. You decided that this was a good trial run for Melodas new spies, and so she sent one of them out to infiltrate and get information on the groups.

The next week the man is found, his throat slit and body dumped outside the city's walls. Meloda is furious, enraged at whatever "filth", as she puts it, would kill one of her men, and mad at the dead man for letting himself get caught despite her training. You ask whether this could be the work of the Assassins and she says no. Their modus operandi is stabbing usually, not slit throats, harder to get information if they're gurgling on blood. So that leaves someone in the city to have done this.

---

[Recruitment: Learning, 74+15=89]

After your recent taking of San Marino you find yourself some luck. These walls and towers have been maintained for generations, the skills of their fathers being passed down for generations and generations, each one adding some new secret. Luckier still, you've found a prodigy, Elena Farnese. Daughter to one of the oldest dynasties here, her father had no sons and had to teach her in their family's ways and she excelled, mastering the ways of no only construction of forts, but also how to tear them down, learning the intricate workings of cannons and mortar. Sadly her works were wasted in recent years, the bandits refusing to let her work on the walls.

You are in no place to deny the services of a skilled engineer, so you soon approach her with your offer. Tawny hair cropped short and out of the way, a few small scars that dot her face and hands, possibly from her work on cannons, and dark hazel eyes that are currently glaring at you as you approach. Embarrassingly she is also looking down at you, being almost half a foot taller than you and muscled from her work. This isn't going to be easy.

"Hello Signora Farnese, I am-" "I know who you are, the Roman lordling that kicked out the bandits and decided to stick around, what is it you want?" okay, rude and curt, you can work with that. "I am in need of an engineer in my services, I've tried looking elsewhere in Italy but it seems engineers are in fashion amongst the nobility. I've heard of your skill, with walls and cannonry and near all else you put your mind to and thought you'd make a great choice. Would you accept the position?" hopefully she won't be too demanding

"And what is it that me and mine get out of this? And I don't just mean your coin, though ill gladly take it, my people have dealt with over arrogant brutes for too long, and I want your word, writ in law, that San Marino will be given the respect, rights, and authority that any city would. I'll not hear anything about hiring me before those are guaranteed, and let me remind you of your own words before you make a decision, engineers are a scant few and already claimed and I would be a great choice."

Well damn, this isn't the best outcome. While it isn't impossible to give San Marino a city's rights it won't be simple. While definitely a great fortification it isn't as developed as many cities, though you can't really say Ravenna's a great example right now. It'll take the rest of the month just making its status official. But like she said, you don't have many options, and so you consign yourself you an aching wrist and hold out your hand. "I'll accept you conditions Farnsese, I look forward to working with you." she blinks a second before taking your hand and giving it a shake that feels like it'll rip your arm off. "Didn't think you'd accept, guess I work for you now Borgia."

---

[Training: Learning, 24+20+15=59]

Once again you spend your afternoons and evenings trying to gain some greater insight into your sixth sense, but this time you find no luck. You tap into it the same way, closing out all other senses and trying to find something new, but all that comes is the silent but ever encroaching whispers, and you make sure to silence the sense before they can herald the arrival of the presence.

---

At the end of the month you receive letters once again, though you doubt they are poisoned with pox this time. One is from the lord Ercole d'Este of Ferrara, the other from The Soon lord priest of Firenze Girolamo Savonarola, and neither is exactly what you expected. You decide to start with lord Este's letter.

"Dear young Valentino Borgia,

I thank you for sending a formal introduction, I worried that either you were too fearful or arrogant to acknowledge your neighbors and am glad to be proven wrong. I am afraid however that a personal meeting must be postponed for more pressing matters are calling me. If you are still governor by the time these matters are over I may invite you to Ferrara.

As for the matter of territory we acquired from Romagna, these are lands that the papacy had left forgotten and my people decided to settle. It would be unlawful for me to tear this land from them and so I shall not, and so long as they remain my people they will remain a part of Ferrara. I apologize if this inconveniences you but I refuse to change my position. I hope you understand.

Sincerely, Lord Ercole d'Este of Ferrara"

Oh you understand alright. The man hides behind the will of his people, people he likely sent himself. And you did not overlook him refusing to use any term of respect, not lord nor governor nor anything else, thinking you merely a young Borgia. While you have no high and mighty opinion of yourself his lack of respect shows that diplomatic endeavors with the man will not be easy.

You put the thoughts of Ferrara out of your head for now and move onto the letter from Firenze. You can see that the man, similar to yourself, personally wrote his letter, though its not quite to your benefit. His handwriting is poor to say the least, seeming like a harsh scratching over the paper rather than anything else, though you give the man the benefit of the doubt in that he likely hasn't had much need to personally write and so merely lacks experience.

"Dear Romagnan Lord Borgia,

I thank you for your kind words. I shall be lord of Firenze by this time next year, so feel free to call me such. There shall be no righteous agreement for the lands already lie in righteous hands. If you truly have reverence for what god desires then you should purge yourself of desire for this land, along with the heretical arts and devilish technologies that plague our age and return to a simpler life.

May God have mercy on your soul, Girolamo Savonarola"

Well it seems that this one isn't going to be of any help either. He refuses to return your land, and what was that nonsense about purging art and technology? It feels as if you truly are without allies on any side. However with the lack of much tact or offers from the priest he doesn't seem a great statesman, perhaps that's not the only thing he is poor at? If he proves to be a poor leader this might be the opportunity to take back your lands forcibly.

In other news the king of Naples, King Ferdinand, has passed, and logically the title of king should fall to his son, Alfonso II, however King Charles VIII has disputed the inheritance, declaring it should fall to him due to some old marriage. While it is a blatant powergrab he still aims to push his claim. Your father has started to form an alliance against France, composed of most powers of Italy, even the despised venetians, as well as the forces of England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. While you are a small and unimportant part of Italy and unlikely to be targeted it is still a dangerous situation.

Early into the next year your fathers last gifts arrives, a squadron of ships each fully crewed, and on its leading vessel a chest of florins. You consider your self lucky that no pirates from Tunis or False knights of Rhodes decided to take it, for it would have been a great prize. You send off a portion of your men with the gold to your makeshift vault in San Marino while you go to examine the ships. You don't quite know how ships work and when something is really damaged, but if you pretend to be confident and knowledgeable it should at least gain you some respect.

With these ships you could start some trade with over seas nations, or even send them off to explore this supposed "new world" that a fellow in Spain discovered. It wouldn't be the safest option but the expansion of the papal states (and your governship) certainly could help with your renown. And beyond financial means just having ships to defend you coast with is invaluable. The money doesn't hurt either.

[Scouting: Martial, 56+10+18=84]

You had sent Gaetan off with the swiss guard to investigate the stolen lands around a month ago and they have finally returned. From their initial reports things aren't all that great in either territory. Tired but unharmed the forces are given a well deserved break while Ast personally delivers their findings.

"Lord Este wasn't lying, our northern lands are filled with his peasantry. Most of them seem to not be there exactly by choice however. One of my men snuck into their towns dressed as a traveller and asked around why they all came here, and their responses varied in details but had a lot of common elements. Either they or a family membered had become indebted to the lord Este, who had been loaning out Florins to all manor of farmers and merchants, while charging large rates of interest. When people were unable to pay back these loans he gave them to come settle these lands or be imprisoned. Naturally they chose the former."

So Este is forcing his people here as you suspected, using them for a de facto claim on the lands south of Ferrara. While it isn't a perfect situation it is one you could use. If you could make those citizens choose to be yours instead that would weaken his claim, though he would try to fight it. Or you could do things the old fashioned way, send in men to clear off the squatters and take it for yourself. Simple, but not easy.

"Onto the matter of Firenze, things are trickier. These lands were claimed by the Medici family, who were recently run off by the forces of king Charles. Now the city's under control of that strange monk. Before those lands were guarded by mercenaries and occupied by farmers and foresters, now fled before the French forces. Strange thing is they're now completely abandoned, the monk not even sending in a token force to take control, couldn't tell you why."

Well that informations a bit more useful. "Thank you commander Ast, you may go now. Enjoy the rest of the day as you will, you and your men have earned it." The commander salutes before leaving as you sink into thought. If Savonarola has abandoned the lands itd be easy to just send men in and take it back, but theres the opportunity for even more here. The monk couldn't have many men of his own, a priest doesn't have the money to have a mercenary army like the medici did. His rule is also unlawful, leading a mob of his followers and declaring his rule due to the absence of the Medici. If you could hire your own mercenaries and take Firenze with them you could place a puppet in charge, or annex the territory for the papal states claiming you are bringing order against the mad priest.

While these are tempting choices they will have to wait, you already have plenty of tasks for a while and you doubt the monks going anywhere. You write down a copy of the information Ast gave you and store it away. For now you need to deal with more domestic matters.

[Investigation: Intrigue, 7+17+20+20(cursed sixth sense)=64]

You are walking through Ravennas market today, looking for nothing in particular, waiting for meloda to finish with her investigation of whoever killed her agent. You are looking at a fascinating contraption out of milan when you hear Georgios yell out "Lording, look out!" you turn, reaching for your dagger, but you are struck in the side of the head and for a moment everything is dark. Through blurred eyes you see Kostas, a dirk in his side, fighting off four masked men with his axe and shield trying to force his way to you, and then all goes dark as a hood is placed over your head.

The world starts shifting in and out of focus, in what moments of consciousness you get you feel yourself being dragged somewhere underground, the air becoming cold and damp. You start to slip into your sixth sense unwillingly, where you hear the whispering, and you force yourself out of it as much as you can but its still present, even when you've cut yourself off from the sense. Eventually the dragging comes to an end and you are thrown into a chair, your hands tied behind your back, and the hood ripped from your head.

Standing before you is a lean and frantic looking man, one you half recognize. This man is a beggar you've seen before, dressed in rags and asking for coin. Now however hes dressed in dark cloth and leathers, a club in one hand and a dagger, yours, in the other. "Why did you have to start looking into us, why you stupid brat!?" as he strikes your face with the club, and you feel teeth rattling in your skull.

"Things were going so damned well until you arrived, and even then you could have been a lazy lord sitting in your fancy fort, but you had to stick your nose where it didn't belong." Another whack, dark spots forming in your eyes, and what terrifies you even more than the threat before you is that the whispers grow louder, without your sense, and below them you hear that feared dark voice, unintelligible now but present.

"We only do this because you and your Greek bitch are forcing us, we would have left you alone if you didn't bother our operation." He says, sounding more like hes trying to convince himself, as he delivers another crack to your skull. And then, in the shadows and dark of this undergound tomb you see him, standing right behind the beggar. The source of the voice. From the eyes up he possesses dark hair that flows down his neck, dark sickly skin, and eyes of gold. Below is the body of a corpse, skin flayed or rotten from his mouth to his neck leaving nothing but a bloody maw, skin marked with uncountable gashes and stab wounds, armored in broze scales and dark cloth and hands wrapped in blood stained bandages.

He speaks and the rest of the world is silenced by the presence of his voice. "It seems that even with Greater Knowledge you could not inflict death upon your enemies before they defeated you. Rejoice, in that I am burdened to share your form, and so shall save us from your failings." With that he walks forward, through the beggar, and into you. you try to shake off from him, the chair you were in falling over but it does nothing against the presence.

As the world around you fades you are left in nothing, a choking void of sensation. You gain little more than flashes of whatever is happening to your body, a slight smell of iron, a cold tingle along your arm, a wetness on your face. Slowly sensation starts to return, and you hear its words, once again overtaking all else. "Be thankful for my mercy child, and seek to repay this debt."

You awaken, still in this tomb, hunched over the beggar, though you can't recognize him. Stab wounds mark his body and head, disfiguring him so that you wouldn't be able to identify him if he weren't the only other person in this room. You crawl back away from him, pain coursing through your body, and feel a sickness to your stomach.

You try to breath deeply, trying to gain a hold of yourself, and are partially successful. You get yourself to your feet and begin to take stock of yourself. You feel a slickness on your head, blood from where you had been struck so many times. Your arms are tender, perhaps he had hit you with his club when the presence took over? All you truly know is that you feel as if you could collapse.

You hear from outside this tomb the sound of conflict, shots fired and weapons clash. You grab your dagger firmly as the sounds approach and ready yourself for whatever comes. Thankfully what comes crashing through that door is your bodyguard Kostas, and upon seeing you he yells back out "I've found the lordling, clear the path out, he needs a doctor!" he tosses down his shield and grabs you, leading you outside where you pass by several of the swiss guard along with commander Ast and a wounded Meloda.

---

A few days pass before you can stay fully conscious more than a few hours. A doctor was brought straight from Rome, sent by your father and guarded along the way by Cesare, not willing to let the man get delayed. He's taken to guarding your chambers alongside Kostas, Shunning his cardinals robe for a sword and armor. The doctor tells you that you will heal but it will be a few months, and gives you medicines to aid the healing and sooth the pain. Apparently you took quite a few more clubbings after you blacked out, resulting in a broken arm and two broken ribs, not to mention the damage to your head.

Eventually Meloda is allowed in, though "escorted" by Cesare, not trustful of her since, as he puts it, its her job to prevent things like this. "Lord Borgia, I have a report on the exact events of what happened, if you wish to hear them?" You wave for her to continue and she says "As I was investigating the efforts of the local criminal element I found more than I was expecting. All of the local crime seems to be controlled by Silvestro Sabbatini, a slaver who considered himself the noble of Ravenna. His thugs would kidnap and sell travelers who visited Ravenna or who were caught outside of it then sold to ottoman forces who would meet him north of Ravenna. All of this highly illegal of course, along side the more common crimes his thugs would commit such as extortion, theft, and assassinations of those who would try to stop them."

"After discovering this I and one of my spies were discovered and attacked by the mans thugs. It seems he suspected something like this might happen and had orders in place to kill anyone investigating including yourself my lord. I was able to escape with only a cut to the head, my spy unfortunately did not. That's another of my men that bastard took from me."

"Formerly he and his goons resided largely under the city in a series of interconnected roman ruins, sadly they have evacuated them, at least from where the swiss guard have been, and Sabbatini is not captured as of now." "Useless woman, that man tried to murder my brother and you haven't caught and executed him yet!?" Cesare screams at her before turning to you. "Brother let me hunt this man, give me one of your platoons and I will bring this dogs head back on a pike alongside all the rest of his thugs." You raise your hand to get Cesare to calm down, and while he's not quite calm he does let you speak.

"We will find this man, but for now we must take stock of what we have at our disposal and finish any prior engagements. Cesare, keep your blade sharp and ready, Meloda, find where he has gone and keep tabs on his location at all times. For now I still need to rest." And with that the two leave, Cesare returning to his self chosen post at your door and Meloda to find this "Noble of Ravenna".

[You will be wounded next turn, resulting in a -10 to all rolls due to being in bed and healing for most of it. 1/3 for ???]

[Investigation: Intrigue, 22+17+14=53]

This really isn't your year. Shortly before the attempt on your life you had worked with Velimir in order to get some intelligence on the situations of your two most Dangerous neighbors. In Ferrara Velimir went personally, and things went more or less okay. Ferrara is currently in the process of militarization, preparing not for any conflict with you Velimir assures but rather against France. They had recently marched into naples, reinforced by Milanese forces, and the emperor of the hre wants to trap them in there. Hes having his Italian forces head in first to create a wall against French attempts to escape.

In Firenze however things turn out much worse and much stranger. Velimir sent in a group of men who owed him a favor, and only one returned. He says that soon after they arrived in Firenze things took a turn for the worse. Savonarola is forcing the citizens to burn all things of luxury, all art, and every book they can find, and any one who seemed to be against him soon feverishly obeyed the priest as if they were the most devout cultist. One of these men himself became converted after trying to find how the priest did it, and when he returned to the group he brought guards and a sword. The man who survived swears the man would never do something like this, and that the priest must be blessed by the devil to have this power.

A call to arms on one side and a plague of insanity on the other. Perhaps you should head to Firenze, its not like your mind could be further twisted. You shake these thoughts out of your head and start to make a record of this information, hopefully you can put it to use.

You stare out the window of the room you are resting in, the house apparently Melodas former base of operations, and see the progress that Farnese is making on the walls. She had Complained about the lack of proper materials and the state of the walls, stating it would need to be completely replaced in some sections, but her progress is astounding. Already over half the walls had been brought to a respectable state in her opinion, with relatively simple cannons placed in towers along it.

She insists its shoddy work with barely any of the improvements shed like to do, but for now it's a sturdy wall, at least in most places. You thank her for her work then quickly return to bed before the doctor catches you.

Currently the war in Italy is in its infancy, and while you'd hope that's all it will ever be you know better than to assume a king would ever walk away from a war where he stands to gain. The doctor has cleared you to at least walk around though urges you not to stress yourself. Your brother grows irritable, wishing to hunt down someone, anyone, who would be an enemy to hm and his brother. You have a mad priest to the west, a debauched slaver somewhere in your lands, a squadron of ships, and some form of demon within you. Fun times.

[Man-Hunt: Intrigue, 52+20+17-10=79]

The hunt for the slaver goes easier than anyone expected, so much so Cesare is almost disappointed. It seems that Silvestro Sabbatini hadn't been well loved by his criminal associates, and when they learned he had attempted to murder the new lord and failed they closed their doors to him, leaving him without shelter or ally. The less severe criminals, smugglers and petty crooks, quickly gave him up, not wanting to be associated with him. They told Meloda he was fleeing north, hoping to leave Italy with the help of his ottoman contacts. He had only a few men with him and whatever coin and salvage they could collect before fleeing. Soon Cesare and Gaetan were set off after him with the information Meloda gave them.

From his report Gaetan took a handful of men and circled around the slaver while Cesare led the rest of the forces in pursuit, trapping the few men inbetween them. The battle was short and bloodless for your side, not quite so much for the slavers, however all were caught alive. These men were dragged behind horses back to Ravenna, irons strapped to their arms and linked by chains, though only one was needed for the noble. Cesare himself launched himself at the man in a fury, his sword cleaving the mans left arm off. The wound was cauterized in order to bring him back alive.

For now these men are held under guard in a makeshift prison, awaiting whatever judgement you deem worthy. The coin and items they tried to flee with are also brough to you. among them are 250 florins, records of transactions he had made, and a collection of old golden jewelry, likely stolen from those roman catacombs he used as a hideout.

Your brother advises you execute the slaver publicly, show any other dissidents and criminals their fate should they try to attack a Borgia. Ast suggests you also execute the man, but quietly. Theres no need to make yourself seen as a bloody handed lord, even if its justified, as he says. Meloda and Zelic on the other hand say you should keep him alive and interrogate him. He obviously had ties not only locally but across the Adriatic, and the names of these people could help in the future. Ultimately they leave it up to you.

So what will you do with him?

[Repairs: Learning, 48+15-10+20=73]

It takes a while, and all of the coin you had just seized, but the walls are finally done. You had hired a group of masons to help finish the walls, and they had proved difficult at first, not wishing to work for a woman, but after showing them exactly what she was capable of (as well as multiple threats to their health should they continue mocking her) they fell in line and followed her commands, if unhappily. By the end of the year you have a barrier of heavy stone and cannon in between you and all threats.

During this time the citys exiles, those Romani and Jew living outside the walls, unexiled themselves, moving into the abandoned districts and even the underground, no longer in fear of the slavers and unwilling to move now that their former homes were being disrupted due to the construction. Some of the original population was unhappy with this and attempted to threaten them out, and were quickly met with a mob in return. They then turned to you to have you do something about it, but between finally having a wall and the influence of the pain medication you really couldn't be bothered right now.

High quality walls are in place, any army trying to seize Ravenna will have a hard time, and people now see Ravenna as just a much safer place in general.

---

[Reputation: Diplomacy, 85+20-10+18= 113]

After having caught the noble you and Zelic arranged for you to address the city, though heavily guarded. Zelic sent out criers to alert the citizenry about when the address would happen, and also brought the doctor to make you look a bit more beat up then you necessarily were. When you asked Zelic why he said "Seeing their young lord wounded so yet still taking the time to address them personally will do wonders for your reputation, now here take this crutch.".

Soon the time comes and you hobble the way Zelic instructed to the town square, flanked by guards hand picked by Ast and Cesare himself, hand on his sword at all times. Eventually you make your way there and you see quite the crowd gathered. Quite a few citizens as well as members of the local clergy, you even see a few groups of the Romanis and Jews amongst the crowd. Cesare looks over the crowd and doesn't immediately charge at anyone so it seems he thinks you're safe at least.

You clear your throat, ask for silence from the crowd, and begin to speak. "Dear citizens of Ravenna, today I can confirm before all of you that the threat of the slavers that have plagued this city is gone. Despite their attempts to stop us from getting close to uncovering them it only proved to be their undoing, as their attempt on my life failed and exposed their leader for us to hunt like the serpent he is.

This man, Silvestro Sabbatini, the so called noble of Ravenna, now sits, rotting, in our prison awaiting his punishment. His lackeys are either dead or captured. While I couldn't possibly undo the years of hurt he has brought to you all I have brought an end to it. However, my work does not end here. When I came to this city over two years ago now I made a promise to you all. I promised that I would take back the lands stolen from Romagna, that I would make this land the jewel of Italy, and this promise still stands.

So long as you shall have me I will not stop in my duty to this land and all of you, and hopefully, one day in the future when the threat of war and death no longer looms over Italy, Romagna will be the beacon of peace, wealth, and knowledge that I know it can be. May all of you blessed with fortune, and I wish you goodnight." And you take a step back, allowing Cesare and the guard to form around you, and begin your trek to your temporary housing. From the cheers you can hear behind you assume they approved of your speech. Zelics trick might even have worked.

---

[Communing: Learning, 28+15-10+20=53]

That night you attempt to purposefully contact the presence and voices for once, but it seems they only come when you don't wish them to. That or the medicine the doctor gave you is blocking them out. While you can use the sense as before it is without any external force, similar to when you were first starting to use it. Whether this is a good thing or not you don't know, but something tells you you aren't done with the presence.

---

The year comes to a close and the doctor tells you that you are as healed as he can make you, though he does recommend you take it easy for a few months. For all this pain and the attempt on your life you are left with a scar, rising across your temple then travelling less than halfway across your forehead. Cesare says that this is a good thing, "Women love scars, they're mysterious and show you aren't afraid to be hurt.". While you doubt this you thank him for his help and coming when he did, and soon he is back to Rome, once again in his ill loved cardinal robes.

This year hasn't been great for you, but thankfully things are much the same. King Charles' forces were trapped in Naples as was planned but only after they razed the capital. Now however Charles cousin, Louis d'Orleans, is using this chaos to try and take Milan on a claim just as weak as Charles. It seems Italy is seen as little more than a rich playground ripe for the taking by these noble Frenchmen.

Savanarola still rules in Florence, still burning every piece or knowledge or art in the city, and if he is yet unsatisfied he may burn down Firenze itself. The forces of lord Este, led by Este himself, have joined the main HRE forces and are fighting the French while his less skilled nephew acts the part of regent. Forli has stayed quiet, seemingly hunkering down and preparing a defense should war come their way. All in all its chaos. One wonders what you'll do with it.

1495, A letter and a demand
You handed off the noble to Meloda, and she requested Kostas help in his interrogation. Over the course of a weekend with him trapped in the same cell you had almost been murdered they squeeze as much as they can from him. Unfortunately however it seems he had no wish to give much information at all. He sword he wouldn't give you anything until you came to him and personally pardoned him. You refused, though gave him a brief glimpse of hope by coming to his prison. This is your first time seeing the man face to face, and you see he truly lives up to your expectations of him. A lean face, sunken dark eyes, long oily black hair and a thin goatee, he seemed every bit the worthless rat, scavenger and vermin.

His hope was quickly crushed when he saw that you brought with you some of the guard, and they swiftly led him to a quickly built gallows, and a short drop. An ignoble death, worthy of one such as he. His execution had been observed by many in the city. While it hadn't been publicized there could only be one purpose for these gallows. Shortly his hanging corpse is joined by those of his crew who had failed to flee alongside him. The corpses are taken down at the end of the day, taken far outside the city, and given a series of unmarked graves.

Thankfully, due to the not so gentle touch of Meloda and Kostas you were able to grab a few bits of information, largely other contacts in the criminal world. It seems he wasn't willing to give any local knowledge, perhaps out of hope it would whet your appetite and spare him or mere base spite, it does not matter. While it wont help in the short term perhaps this info could be of use later on

Two French nobles who by night spend their time masked in reverie and blood, assassins for hire Cahin and Caha. A fledgling thieves brotherhood in the woods around Rome, call themselves the Cento Occhi. Two separate Mercenary companies, one calling itself the iron pact led by a knight named Verullo Gallo. The other, the Ring of Gold, a collection of various warriors from all over the known world led by a man named Rocco Tiepolo. Lastly a man by the name of Shakulu, a young oguz turk and enemy of the ottomans who had raided the shipments of slaves the slaver had sold.

[Eliminate: Martial, 10+10+18+20(swiss)= 58]

It seems that your recent efforts against the slaver have not gone unnoticed by the rest of the wretches of Ravenna as they've all gone into hiding. Whatever crimes they do commit they are doing their best to make them quick and quiet. Smugglers are being more careful and ignoring any traps at the docks, thefts are kept quiet and small, and whenever something big happens such as a robbery from visiting merchants ship they create a distraction to keep the guard occupied.

It seems that for now at least it'll take more than sending out your men in mass to hunt them. Time or different tactics might catch them unaware but for now you call the men off, sending them to man the walls and mitigate the damage.

[Mining: Stewardship, 59+15+20=94]

You had left with a group of miners into some mountains near the Forli border and tried using your sense to see if it could help you find anything, and eventually one mountain caught you interest. You told the miners to start digging here for anything of note and head back to the city. You hoped you would get something of value but with your recent luck you think you'd be lucky just not to have a cave in. But then the leader of these miners comes back and asks you to follow him outside the city's walls. You're slightly suspicious and bring Kostas with you but it proves unnecessary as all he has with him is a cart.

He tells you to look inside, taking pleasure in building the suspense apparently, and you humor the man. Inside you see various stones with black lustrous metal throughout, iron ore. Better than that even, and the miner makes sure you see it, various stones with red gemstones in them, rubys. While its only a small amount compared to the iron this is still great.

You could sell the rough gemstones off or perhaps entice some gem cutters and jewelers to the city. And with the iron you could set up some forges here, bring some of San Marinos blacksmiths or bring them from somewhere else to start making weapons or whatever else you could want. For now you merely shake the miners hand, declare he's in charge of the miners, and send him back with more tools, lumber, and men so they can make a proper mining operation.

You now have an iron mine and a small ruby mine. Iron mine adds 10 fl/turn just from raw ore and the ruby mine gives 10 fl/turn on raw gemstones

While the ships your father had given you are a good beginning to a naval force, you could always use more. And so you set Zelic off to find where you could get some good ships, and eventually he finds something, though it's a little unconventional. Soon you find yourself dealing with a group of Tunisian privateers, looking to sell off some excess ships they had captured from ottoman and venetian forces. While they aren't exactly the type of people you'd normally like to deal with Zelic insists that this will get you the most ships for the least florins, so you suppose you'll have to deal with it.

The privateers argue and barter for most of the day, insisting that the ships are worth more but you and zelic stand firm, eventually they relent and you are able to come to an agreement that neither side is truly happy with but accept just to be done with it. The privateers load back onto their ships and their captain says he looks forward to working with you again. In the end you are left with a mix of Venetian, Ottoman, and even one Mamluk ship.

Gained one Carrack, 5 Barques, and 6 Galleys

[Defense: Intrigue, 58+20+17=85]

While you have not dealt with any Assassins yet Sophia tells you you cant expect it to stay that way. Eventually the two of you write up instructions for the guard based off what you do know. One in every three of the guards are to be posted in posts on the roofs of the city, with this position to be cycled every week so no one becomes complacent. These guards are to be armed with crossbows and a horn so they may alert the rest of the guards should they see someone up there. Of course regular citizens may request permits if they need to do repairs or have some other valid reason to be up there.

They are also made to familiarize themselves with the attire of Assassins, most dressing in a type of hooded robe, gambeson, or doublet, though this isn't necessarily always true. They will dress themselves this way in order to hide their features and even blend in with certain groups, the robes made to appear similar to a monks frock for example, Meloda tells you.

They are also told to not let their guards down when around these Assassins, as they have weapons hidden all over them, blades up their wrists, daggers in their boots, Meloda even claims one assassins she had seen back home had used a chain he had hidden in his cloak to great effect.

Regardless, for now the guards are aware of their main avenues of attack, though they always try to find some trick to overcome defenses, so you must still stay on guard Meloda tells you.

+10 defense against hostile schemes

Your making the trek from the forts of San Marino back to Ravenna. You had sent Farnese ahead of you a week ago so she could finish work on the armory she had wanted to build. Its to be a place where she can experiment with her various designs and store the few that work well enough to use. It's a pleasant day in Italy today, not too warm, a calm breeze, you can only wonder whats about to ruin it. You hear a blast from the city, and looking towards it you see smoke rise from roughly where she said she would start building. You aren't angered or even afraid, you just accept that this sort of thing will happen and continue on your path at a slightly faster pace.

You can hear the scene before you get there, Farnese screaming herself hoarse at someone. Eventually you arrive to see the target of her rage, a man dressed as a worker, now slightly singed outside of a partially erupted armory. "Dear Farnese, could you restrain yourself from making this man wish he were dead and tell me what happened?" you say, startling the woman briefly before she responds.

"This worthless bastardo started to load crates of my supplies into the nearly finished armory and didn't think to check what was in them when he moved them. One of these crates he had put a lit lantern on and quickly left to bring in more crates. He ended up knocking this lantern over, setting fire to a crate of gunpowder. The only reason he's not splattered all over the city is because I noticed his fuck up and dragged him out before it could blow." She says with a death glare to the man.

"Now im going to need to get new materials and restart work on the armory, and this fool is never going to step foot near it again, got it?!" this last part directed to the former worker. He only sinks into himself, not willing to anger her or the piece of debris in her hands. With a sigh you tell her "see that this is cleaned up and ill see if I can set aside more funds for you to finish it, alright? And please don't kill the man, please." At this she only grumbles and lets the man flee.

About 50% progress made

[Training: Prowess, 72+22=94] (you cant add your own stats when training)

Ever since the attempt on your life you decided you needed to be able to defend yourself, or more accurately Kostas decided for you. "If I cant be by your side every moment, then you will need to know the basics to defend yourself." He had said, and so he brought you to his training grounds, a small ring with a dummy in the center near the docks. "Your dagger, use it and start hitting the target until I tell you to stop." You pull It out and start thinking on what you're supposed to do. Do you stab, slash? You weren't the fighter of the family, but you can feel Kostas glaring at your back, waiting for you to start, so you decide to start stabbing. You start sinking you dagger into the wood for at least 10 minutes and your arms already feel like they'll fall off, sweat falling off of you the dagger feeling far heavier than it should. You start to slow and look back to Kostas to see if hes satisfied, but he just glares in response, waiting for you to continue.

He makes you continue for an hour, until he finally tells you to stop. "It seems you only killed that man through luck, your form is pathetic and stamina pitiful. Go to your home and rest, then meet me here again tomorrow." You almost want to protest but a glare from kostas makes it stop in your throat. He continues this training, increasing the time he has you stabbing and slashing every day until you feel like your arms will fall away, and then even longer still, all the while giving small tips on your stance, grip, posture, and multiple other small details. By mid summer he finally deems you practiced enough with it to defend yourself, at least from petty thugs, but you are far from being a master.

You are now a dagger apprentice. +2 to prowess when using a dagger.

---

Its around the end of summer when you receive a letter from your father. You wondered what it could be about, perhaps new from the war or some Assassin plot, but soon find it isn't some friendly letter but far more harsh.

"Dear Valentino,

It has come to my attention, through the word of your brother Cesare, that you have not progressed in your task. I sent you there so you may retake the stolen lands yet you seem to have spent your time delaying, focusing only inward while outside the world continues to turn without you. Therefore I have decided to give you the necessary prodding for you to act.

Starting next month the papacy will no longer foot the bill on your armed forces, leaving you to pay for them out of your territories profits. By the end of the year the wages for your advisors shall also be forced onto you. This is not merely a punishment upon you but a necessity for the papal coffers in this war. Should you retake the stolen lands I imagine the costs will be offset.

Aside from your need to retake the lands id suggest you also look into a political marriage. It would bring you an ally you could call upon and strengthen you hold on Romagna if you have a direct heir. Remember there is no need for love in this marriage, if you seek that sort of thing just seek a mistress. I have also heard from your brother you have one of the Byzantines with you, if you seek allies perhaps see if she has any allies back home who would help you.

You know your task, let nothing else distract you from it. Use whatever means you deem necessary to take it.

Regards, your father Rodrigo Borgia, Alexander VI."

Well, at least he wasn't blunt about it.

!495, The Ring of Gold
[Recruitment: Martial, 30+10+18=58]

So it turns out making an army is pretty difficult. Recruiting is the easy part, with recruitment being open to everyone and anyone living in the city. The hard part is training and equipping these people. Gaetan tries his best but his experience is with leading smaller platoons of already trained soldiers, not making soldiers out of farmers and drifters. You also come across the issue of not having a barracks for them, so that's yet another cost you'll have to add on. By the end you have not an army but a mob, but its still a start. Given more time and investment something can be made out of them.

Cost 50 fl+ 10fl/turn

---

[Recruitment: Martial. 96+10+14= 120]

You decide that it would be best to hire an army while you try and train your fledgling one. You had also heard of two companies recently that were each highly skilled. You send out letters to both of the mercenary companies requesting their services. You quickly receive a letter from the Iron Pacts leader Verulo Gallo, appreciating your offer, however he regrets to inform you he is currently in the employ of Venice and will not leave until his contract is complete. The other response from the Ring of Gold comes soon after, and with far more intensity than you expected.

It is early in the morning, a mist hanging over the land, and you are trying to oversee the construction of the barracks, when you hear the blaring of trumpets, and somehow an even louder declaration from outside the city gates, "Lord Valentino Borgia, the ring of gold has received your offer, and we are very interested!" you rush up onto the walls and are shocked by what you see. Obscured by the mist they must have approached unseen, but how they did so with such a large force you have no idea. You see elephants, goddamned elephants, among their forces, Greek cataphracts, ottoman jannisaries, English longbowmen, the mans reputation doesn't exaggerate as he seems to have collected a soldier from all over the world.

Speaking of the man, you see him ahead of all his men, armed with nothing but a short sword and extravagant clothes on a burly frame. The man has long curly black hair that goes almost to the middle of his back and a thick moustache. Most concerningly is the near deranged look on his face. Seeing that it might be foolish to decline the mans services when hes at your front door you head down to introduce yourself.

"Sir Rocco Tiepolo I presume? I admit I was uncertain if you would respond, much less come in person. I had heard that you typically don't personally oversee your men most of the time?" "It is true, I often leave my men to lead themselves, they don't need me to baby them, but when I heard about your enemy I couldn't help myself!" Rocco says, seemingly not capable of not talking loudly and brashly. "MY enemy? Sir im afraid you must be more specific, I find myself with enemies on all sides so I can't place who exactly you refer to."

"Why your hellish priest of course, this savorla or whatever hes called, ive heard that hes recently taken Florence through some devilish power. Twisting the minds of men to serve his bidding, even making them slaughter their friends and allies, he could be nothing less than a demon. Fortunately for you I have always wanted to slay a demon." You are slightly taken aback by this but quickly compose yourself and respond "well hopefully I can grant your wish sir. Now while I know you desire to fight this man I cant imagine youd be willing to do it unpaid, so let us move onto the details of your contract."

"Ha, good, lesser men might try to weasel me into working for free for my desires and ignore I have an army to feed. Now I am willing to give a lower price than usual, for your good manner and grand enemy. An upfront payment of 150 florins and a stipend so we may purchase provisions until we march."

While it isn't exactly cheap it is likely the best deal you will get for such an army. A bit of haggling takes place on the stipend, hes unwilling to go lower on the initial cost, and you find yourself the employer of the ring of gold.

It seems that due to the current wars blacksmiths are in high demand, and none come to Ravenna. Not what you had wanted but at least they aren't simply refusing to come. You'll just need to push harder in the future.

[Negotiation: Diplomacy, 81+20+20+18=139]

You had tasked Velimir with sending a few feelers up north, looking for leaders amongst the settlers there who might not enjoy the lord Estes rule over them. They come back with three candidates, a merchant, a former soldier turned farmer, and a blacksmith. Each one held enough sway with the settlers that they would follow him, but you needed to be sure whoever you went to would prefer you to Este, so you decide to meet them personally.

Wanting to keep this as quick and quiet as possible you leave only with Kostas, in a commoners clothes and cloak and ride north. You were given descriptions of the men and where they would be, so you quickly made your way there and used the sixth sense, figuring it would help you discern the loyalties of these men.

The merchant you immediately right off while purchasing a few random trinkets. The man seemed to enjoy his place here too much. To hear him tell it Este sent him here to provide a necessary service to these people, and that while it may not be perfect is is good enough for him. the blacksmith you find next, and while hes nowhere near as joyful for his position you doubt youd be able to work with the man. He seems far too distrusting of outsiders to allow one to become the new lord. Kostas did say he did a great job on the shield he bought.

Lastly you visit the farmer, and this man is perfect. He isn't happy to be here, anger seems to rise off the man to your sixth sense making him seem almost like a torch on a dark night. You approach and ask his story, and while he doesn't want to give it at first with enough persistence and pointed questions you get it. This man had been a loyal commander for estes forces, his father having been a soldier and his father before him.

When this man was about to be married the lord estes son barged in and declared a right to prima nocta despite it being out of law for over a century. Despite his protests his wife was taken away, only to be returned a week later. He went to lord este immediately, demanding justice, but Este would not act against his heir and nephew. The lord tried to make the soldier stop but he was too persistant, so instead he was given a soft exile and sent here.

Seeing this as the perfect motivation to help you you ask if he would still have Este as his lord if given the choice. It takes him a while to respond but he eventually says no. at this you tell him who you are and why youre here. If he can convince the rest of them to instead serve you, whether by using the fact that many were not here by choice, that traditionally this is part of Romagna, or just that there would be less strict taxes you did not care, then he would get some small taste of revenge, and you the land you were owed.

You soon returned to the forts of san marino, and far sooner than you expected afterwards you start receiving taxes from the northern parts of Romagna, quietly deciding that you were preferable as a lord. You send one of the platoons there toact as guards just in case Este's nephew tries anything, but it seems he doesn't pay attention to the tax flow of Ferrara.

Tax increased, +15 fl/turn

It isn't easy getting into contact with the Thieves, you don't even know where to start, but then Sophia has an idea she finds all too fun. She sends of a carriage with a chest, supposedly containing your payment to some banker for a debt you owed, but instead inside will be an invitation for the Hundred Eyes. You tell her this sounds like something out of a folk tale, and who knows if they can even read, and she tells you "Too bad, I already sent it."

Hopefully nobody will think it was your plan but at the very least she did get a response from the Occhi. On the return of this carriage to Ravenna inside the chest is a new letter, it seems they have a similar taste for the dramatic. They even have their own seal, An eye with teal wax to keep the letter closed. Meloda reads the letter first, and from her expression it isn't exacly what she expected, and she hands it to you.

"To the Borgia of Ravenna

We appreciate the kind letter you have sent, it is rare for us to get the respect we deserve from your kind. While this respect is appreciated we cant just hand over access of our network to anyone who asks. If you truly desire an alliance then were gonna need something in return, some tip onto a valuable score. We hope you understand

Sincerely, the Cento Occhi."

It seems they want tit for tat, information in exchange. While you don't have a led right now you could find one. Or just send a platoon into intimidating them into working for you, father says fear always works.

When you next see Farnese she is in a stat of exhaustion. She tells you that the construction of her workshop is cursed, from the fool who blew the place up to the recent unfortunate events. Apparently termites had infested the wood supply she was using to build it, so they had to be burned and a new batch sent for. Then somehow that order was delivered to the wrong location, being sent down towards Urbino. She personally went and brought back the wood as well as extra of every other material she could need just in case.

Unlucky events like this continued to occur, powder being left out in the rain, plans she had been using stained by mud. Finally the building had been just finished by her end date, but even now shes afraid, though you wouldn't say that where she could hear, that something has been left out. For now you have an armory, and she a workshop, better make use of it before something happens to it.

Thankfully no letter comes from your father, apparentely satisfied fro now with youre peaceful reclamation of Northern Romagna. He still expects you to start paying for your advisors and agents out of your own pocket now however. Other than that you thankfully haven't had any issues from ferrara, the nephew proving to be a fool. Information from Florence is still bleak. From the rumors you've heard bonfires that burn through all hours of the day have been set up so that the people of the land may come and "purge" their sin, often against their will.

The works of art of the great men of this time, musical instruments, books and knowledge dating back to imperial Rome, all become but ash under Savonarolas will. There is even talk that now anyone deemed too sinful or merely against Savonarolas reign are killed and burned as well. This sort of thing would have been crushed by the papal forces in the past, but the war against France demands Italys full strength.

The French are being chased throughout Naples while they look for a chance to break north or for allied ships to take them to safety. Your brother, Juan, seems to be making a bit of a name for himself in his battles. Apparently he was able to force the French to flee from sea borne allies. Cesare seems to despise that Juan is getting all the glory while he is stuck in his cardinal robes. He wishes to lead his own forces to crush the French.

Lucrezia is apparently to become the Governess of Spoleto. This has caused no shortage of controversy as this is a title typically held by a cardinal. Gioffre is still being taught, apparently doing well in diplomatic matters, though mostly through being able to befriend those around him with ease.

You've also been hearing rumors about your family, horrible things claiming you all to commit sinful acts of severe degeneracy and corruption. No doubt spread by the French, trying to cause havoc among their enemies. Your enemies only seem to grow, you wonder when someone pleasant will show up.

1496, the Bonfire of the Vanities
The ring of gold will be ready to march on Firenze by the end of summer Tiepolo tells you. it seems so far away but the days start to fly by, a dread in your chest. What if the assassins are working with Savonarola and that's why he's been so powerful? What if he truly does have the power of some demon that lets him control the people? What if so many different possible things, your mind starts to burn from trying to think of a solution to every possible solution, so you bury yourself in your work and try to prepare Ravenna so it can survive without you for however long this takes.

[Training: Martial,37+10+14=61]

Your Mobs starting to resemble a proper organized force more and more. These almost soldiers are starting to gain the strength and constitution to put up a half decent fight, at least according to Kostas. The only issues now are equipping them, some still have pitchforks in place of spears and woodsmen axes instead of battle axes, and getting them to fight cohesively and together. Their training under Kostas made them respectable individual combatants, but that means nothing in the face of organized warfare.

For now it will have to do however, as they are going to be responsible for the defense of Ravenna while you are gone. You just hope they won't need to be used.

[Recruitment: Stewardship, 80+15=95]

You almost decide to send some men out to put up wanted posters for a steward, if none were coming willingly perhaps a bounty hunter could bring one in. But these poor ideas were soon made irrelevant by a knocking at your doors. You rise from your chair and head to the door, and standing behind them is a young man, about your age, in romani clothing and jewelry. Dark curling hair reaches down to his shoulders with the beginnings of a beard, and you notice a nervous energy about him that he quickly tries to stifle when he sees you.

"Ah good, the lord Borgia himself, I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with some assistant of yours." "And you are, good sir?" you ask, hand sliding towards your dagger just in case. "I am Django Argov, and I've heard you are in need of a steward, and given the fact you haven't kicked my family out of Ravenna I doubt you're hateful enough to reject ones services just because they're a touch different. If I am correct then let me tell you about my skills. My family have been the deal makers and overseers for our camps or businesses whenever wed settle for a time.

I've been taught by three generations the arts of both making a deal and overseeing and fulfilling the needs of communities. I've also been taught some of the arts of banking by our fellow undesirables from the ruins district, so I believe id serve excellently as your steward, if you haven't been able to find one just yet that is." He says with a smirk that tells you he knows you haven't found a steward.

"It is true that the city of Ravenna does still require the services of a steward, but I wonder why you would offer yourself. From what I know, which admittedly isn't much, your people don't take jobs like this. They prefer quick jobs they can leave at a moments notice when their caravans need to travel, so what's different here?"

"Quite simply a desire to no longer travel. We've been able to establish a small secure community, despite some of our less pleasant neighbors, and I don't want us to give it up to go to some new city that despises us as much as the last, blaming everything from grey skies to stillbirths to the plague on us and our "gypsy magics". I figure that working for the lord of these lands is a good step to keeping things this way.

And besides, you don't exactly have many choices, you haven't had a steward since you came here, and soon you're going to be off to war with those mercenaries you hired. You don't have time to look for a better option than the one right in front of you." well he's certainly arrogant, but he isn't wrong. You need a steward for while your gone, and your other advisors shouldn't be split in their duties.

You gather yourself before saying "I'm not so desperate as you might think, but you are somewhat correct. However, while you are my steward you duty is not only to me but all of Romagna, not just your Romani, is that understood?" "Clear as could be my lord, happy to be working for you.".

Well it seems that Elena pulled off some kind of magic. You asked if she had any ideas on how to bring some jewelers to Ravenna, and her response was to grumble and say she'll see what she can do. Not 3 weeks later two famed jewelers arrived. Not only famed for their skill but their rivalry with each other. Of course it seems neither had known the other would arrive, and began to argue and bicker the moment they laid eyes on each other. You were worried they would both leave, even moreso when Elena started to egg them on, wanting to know which was better.

Somehow this resulted in them racing off in a huff to opposite sides of the city to each get rubys and metal to create works to put the other to shame. You ask Farnese how she managed to do that, even more how she got the two of them here. Her only response was that the Farnese family has connections all over, and nothing more.

Given the look on Sophias face you can only imagine she was successful with her task. When you ask her what she had found she asked you to thank her in advance. After a brief bit of arguing for her to just tell you already you concede and give her the thanks she wanted. And after hearing what she found it seems it was earned.

She had found that Lord Estes nephew had purchased a set of regalia once worn by the former kings of Lombardy, a rare and one would assume priceless artifact, but apparently when you spend someone else's money anything is for sale. Of course now it never reached Ferrara, having been taken by a group of mysterious thieves in the night.

Instead of any grand regalia you receive a letter, sealed with a familiar eye, stating simply that you now had allies and access to the information of the Cento Occhi.

---

The day has finally arrived and you feel a weight in you. Lead seems to fill your bones, not wanting you to get on your horse and ride to Firenze, but you resolve yourself. After this your task from your father will be done and even more so Florence will be yours, and the Borgia will control almost all of central Italy. It can and will be done.

You meet up with Tiepolo early in the morning, and you see that his forces have completely disassembled their tents already, ready to march. "Excited to march out Borgia? There's nothing quite like it, the first steps as an army marches off to war, like the drums of war are with you, inspiring you to victory!" "Excited is certainly one word for it Captain Tiepolo, were ready to march so lets get a move on"

"Ha ha, ready and eager are we, ill give out to signal its time to go soon, but for now lets get to the places of honor, shall we?" you're about to ask what he means before he grabs you by the shoulder and leads you to what had caught your attention so your first time seeing this army, the war elephants. Oh god he's going to make you ride this monster.

Rope ladders are lowered down and he rushes up it, and you see little choice but to follow up after. On top of the elephants are a type of armored carriage where the riders control the elephant from, as well as holsters for arquebuses making this into a living mobile firing tower. Once you are on top Tiepolo reaches for and blows an ivory horn, the signal that its time to march.

The army starts to move as one and you feel the lurch as the elephant moves, your footing unstable and only kept upright by Tiepolos hand. All of this seems to be of great fun for him, while it feels like you would have been thrown to the ground and broken your neck by this beast if it weren't for his help. Eventually you just sit down in the basket and hope you survive the trip.

---

The next few days are much the same, though you insist on riding just a horse the rest of the way. Tiepolo tries to show off one of the exotic soldiers or weapons he has collected and tell you about their history, their use, and nearly all of it flies over your head. Eventually he runs out of soldiers so he starts to tell the stories of his greatest battles, clearly in love with the sound of his own voice and spreading his legends.

Eventually the stories stop, as you've finally reached your destination. There were no patrols or guards of any kind on the way here through the stolen lands, where they could be you have no idea. But before you now are the walls of Firenze, once the pearl of the Medicis, now the hollowed husk of Savonarolas Zealotry. The gates are closed, likely barred and you can't see any of the priests forces.

Tiepolo lacks his usual extravagance, staring at the city like a starving man looks towards an animal, seeing nothing but prey. He commands his forces to approach quickly but quietly, no battle cries or defiant screams, and tells you to ride alongside him in the middle of the army. "It would seem this devil is one of sloth, not sending his forces to meet us in battle, or perhaps I am more terrifying than this demon and they fled before our might, huh Borgia?" he asks, but there is no true mirth there, seemingly not trusting this easy approach.

The army approaches quickly and just as the front rows start to reach the gates they open, and with that opening men with guns rise on the battlements, aiming into the crowds of soldiers. Out from the gates comes Fully armed and armored troops, full plate and massive swords and axes in their hands. These men surround a single figure in dark ash stained robes, Savonarola himself. A harsh, unpleasant face is all you can see, the rest hidden by robes, all but his hands in which he holds a golden orb.

A bolt of lightning seems to rip through you mind at its sight, your sixth sense flairs awake and the whispers become a cacophony, you see the presence circling the priest, staring at the orb but you're the only one who sees him. over the screams of the voices you can hear the priest start to speak.

"Take not a single step further you sinners! This land is protected by the will of god, and you shall never overcome his will. Remove yourselves, and that son of that treacherous and satan cavorting Borgia Wretch, and you shall be spared this day. Should you fight against gods will you shall be forced into a harsh but deserved penance." He says with zealous belief. The man truly believes his word.

"I am afraid we have thrown away gods grace long ago priest, and I imagine you've done the same. For us it would be a far greater sin to now break our contract than to slay some devil possessed priest! Men, You know what to do, let us slay a demon!" he says and you hear the eruption of mortars and cannons from behind you, striking the battlements as they start to fire and men begin to charge. But then the priest raises the orb to the heavens and golden light erupts across the nascent battlefield and everything changes.

The men leading the charge, Tiepolos most heavily armed infantry and cavalry, including those damn elephants, screech in pain, before turning around, golden light filling their eyes, and they charge into their own comrades. Rumors of Savonarolas ability to control man were known but you doubt anyone expected it to happen this quickly, and the battle turns bloody soon. The gunmen on the walls continue to fire into the wild melee, the cavalry carving lines into the forces, the elephants charging directly towards you and the captain.

The two of you start to ride away but the elephants don't need to worry about moving around allies. Just before one is on top of the two of you you hear the fire of a cannon and the eruption of flesh, a direct hit on the elephant. Unfortunately its too close, and the last thing you see is its grey husk falling on the two of you.

---

You hear the muffled sounds of battle around you, and you can barely feel yourself being pulled out from under the dead beast. The pulling soon stops and you start to hear a blurred yelling, then a sharp crack across your face. Clarity returns to the world and you see Tiepolo kneeled over you. "Good, you're a fighter Borgia, keep fighting and stay alive. Stay here behind the elephant and you shouldn't be hurt, I need to go kill that fucking devil, if anyone comes near you use that dagger!" he yells, pressing your dagger into your hands before rising and charging towards the priest.

You crawl your way to the edge of the corpse, your body screaming and telling you to stay still and never move again, and look out. Battle rages all around Ring of Gold forces butchering each other, the priest walking through, screaming some sermon of some kind at all those around him, the orb in his hand. You see Tiepolo rushing his way over there, quickly dispatching anyone who tries to stop him with his shortsword. He almost makes his way to the priest, nearly catching him by surprise, but the priest is able to stop him with feet to spare.

You see Tiepolo fight against it, taking a few steps more, the priest just out of his reach, before the orb is raised again, and Tiepolo stabs his shortsword into his own neck. "He had the right idea but not the power to see it through." You hear the presence and he steps into your vision. "We, however, have that power. And we truly must thank you, despite once again nearly killing us you have brought us right to the object we've seeked. Now, we don't need you anymore, so be a good mortal and sleep."

With that your body starts to rise without your command, the world blacking out around you as you struggle to fight it off. Your body starts to charge at the priest, ignoring any attempts to stop you, letting wounds build up so it can reach the priest all the faster. He notices your bodies approach far sooner than Tiepolos, and tries to use the orb, but somehow it has no effect, and it puts fear and disbelief into Savonarola. He starts to step, then run, back to the gates of the city.

His men, having joined the melees, are not there to stop your body and he is chased into the city with your body slowly but surely catching up. Eventually he arrives in the citys square, surrounded by his devotees, where he tries using the apple again. He raises it to the sky but before he can use it your own hand grasps the apple and once again it erupts with light. You see out of the corner of your eyes as something must have gone wrong as you see the citizens start to tear into each other with a feral madness, ripping each other to pieces with tooth and nail.

"Sinful beast, how dare you defy the will of god?! You satanic monster, god will save me, and punis-" his words are cut off, your dagger stabbing into his throat, just as you are finally forced from your own body, swallowed by a deep, unknowable darkness.

---

The first thing you feel is the cold damp stone beneath you, smooth and slick. The second the warmth of a fire. The third what sounds like the noise of a city. You roll over onto your back and look up to see what you think is a starry night sky, but looking closer seems to be the ceiling of a cave, countless glinting stones resembling stars. You work your way to your feet and the first thing you notice is your left hand. Where once it had held that orb it now seems burned with its golden light, light seeming to trail in lines across your palm. The next where exactly you are.

Looking around you are on a large platform with a bonfire at its center high above the bottom of the cave with a grand stairway leading down and a series of gates blocking the way up, seeming to trap you here. You make your way to the stairway, expecting your body to protest but all pain seems to be gone. You make your way to the edge of the platform and look down and are shocked by what you see below. A city of cold stone in this massive cavern, filled with pale light and pale figures rushing about. At the bottom of the stairway you can see a large building, somewhere inbetween a temple and palace. And finally you recognize the sounds of the city even clearer. These are the whispers, the cacophony that has haunted your sixth sense for as long as you can remember.

No no no, this cant be real, this has to be some sort of dream or something right? A nightmare? You just need to wake yourself up. Calm yourself, focus, and just wake yourself up. Should be easy, you've done it before with other bad dreams, it'll be simple so why the hell wont it work!?

"Oh you poor fool. You truly think its as easy as willing yourself out? I was trapped in there, inside you, for years and you think I hadn't tried that countless times? Enjoy the rest of the dead mortal, you've had the body for long enough, its time I take the reins. Do not worry, time will pass much faster in there then out here." You hear the voice of the presence inside your head, echoing and blurred, almost like hearing it through water.

You look around, hoping to find something you missed and, lacking that, launch yourself into the first of the gates, only to bounce off. How did he get out, what led him take control of you before? Both times, the first when you were being beaten to death by the slavers thug and when you were almost crushed by a falling elephant. Was it the pain and damage? The stress you were going through? Your emotional state? You don't have time to wait for him to get both of you nearly killed, there has to be another way.

There might be keys to these gates or some way out he hadn't found down in the temple or the city, so you start to rush down the massive staircase, trying not to fall and kill yourself here. Eventually you reach the temple, wherein you see multiple figures, clad in black cloth, similar to the one the presence had worn but without the armor. You cant be distracted by them, so you rush through, trying to explore every nook and cranny of this place.

You spend what feels like days, maybe even weeks, just exploring the temple. The temple itself is made of black marble with gold lining, and is seemingly sized for giants, so your rush through takes too long for your liking, especially with the presences comment about time passing more quickly here. Eventually, your search so far having proven fruitless, you reach the top of the temple. The only room up here is behind intricate marble doors, inlaid with gold made to look like golden fields in a grand garden, beautiful flowers and an apple tree bearing fruit. Hopefully that's a sign that this leads to the land of the living.

Instead, after a great deal of effort forcing this door open, you find a grandly decorated throne room, windows allowing a view of all the city, overgrown with golden plant life. Vines snake across the walls, all manner of flowers and shrubs break out of the marble floor, and golden grass lines the pathway leading to the throne, and the one in it.

You see a woman, with dark hair and bronze skin, and somehow you can feel almost a familiarity with her though you know you haven't seen her before. She is flanked by two hulking golems, large marble figures with masks of many faces twisted in pain, yet you feel as though they are not as dangerous as the woman they protect. It seems she was expecting you, for as soon as you enter the doors shut behind you.

"So you are the one my dear husband has made his host, a pity. It seems almost a waste to trap you in this world of falsehood." You start to grab at the door behind you, not wanting to deal with whatever this is, but finding the door locked decide to play along. "Your husband? You mean the presence? Can you tell me what he is, what any of this is, and how to get out?" "Patience child, knowing the fool he'll be his own ruin, and you'll take back your place. As for what he is, he is Nergal, lord of inevitable death, king of the underworld, and countless other self imposed titles that mean nothing now."

You've heard that name, you think at least, some old pagan god of the east. "Now however he's quite less, an echo if you would, a last desperate attempt to escape his own inevitable death. He placed within humanity fragments of himself, a curse that would only appear when everything aligned just right so. Its possible you aren't even the first his curse has fallen upon.

As for what this is." She says as she gestures to the windows and city below. "It is a poor copy of what he left behind, his ego would not allow him to exist without subjects of some kind, and so he left within his curse remnants of home. Simply put all you see before you is merely memories not your own, made so that his ego wouldn't be hurt. It seems he wasted time on an effort of vanity rather than ensuring an easy way to take power."

Okay, that's a lot of strange stuff but you guess gods or kings or whatever might be able to do strange stuff if the power of that orb is anything to go by. "As for how to return to your body it is by the same means he used to take power. That orb, an apple of Eden as it was referred to in our time, is a powerful relic not meant for human hands. It, and objects like it, were the means by which Nergal laid his curse upon humanity.

The fool is likely to overuse it in his pursuit of items he had left behind, baubles and trinkets he hid for his future selves. The human form is not meant to use them, and so he will leave himself weakened. That is when you shall strike. And from the look of your hand it shall be soon."

You look to your hand at these words and see that where once it merely had slight burns and faint golden light trailing it it now seems consumed by darkened skin and glowing light. "Return to the gates, and you should find them opening. Rush now before you lose your chance." Seeing no reason to ignore a chance at getting your body back you sprint out the now opened doors, down the floors of the temple until you are at the base of the stairway.

Up above you can see eruptions of golden light come from the gates, and so you start the climb. The eruptions of light grow, becoming a near blinding thing, but more than that the cavern shakes with the eruptions. Stone starts to shake loose from the ceiling, crashing into the city below and into the stairs before you. Dodging the falling stone you eventually reach the gates, now distorted, broken away from their hinges.

Ahead you can see you body surrounded by golden light, kneeling on the ground, apple in its hand. You hear the presence, yelling in a wordless rage. So consumed by his anger he does not notice your approach until it is too late. You grab for the apple, but instead you hand sinks into his, while the presence, Nergal, is forced out. You continue to sink back into your body as he yells in defiance, "No, I still need to find my treasures, stay back damn you!" as he tries to crawl away from you, but to no avail.

Eventually he is forced out, and the land of the dead is replaced by pain and cold. Your body feels like every piece had been ripped away and forced back together time and time again. The pain stems from your left hand, still holding the apple, and you drop it onto the ground. You look over yourself, to see what he may have done while he controlled it. You are clad in rough, loose white cloth, the kind one wears to protect from the heat. Nearby is a pack, looking into it is filled with rations and stored water.

You remove the shirt and find your arms and chest covered with new wounds. While some you assume are from when Nergal charged at the priest and have now scarred over, others are newer, fresher, and bandaged over. Your left hand, which once held the apple, seems the worst. It is entirely bandaged, from whatever damage his overuse of the apple caused. Reaching up to feel your head your hair seems to have grown out quite a bit, and you can feel a bandage on your cheek.

Finally you turn your attention to where you are. Looking around you are in a large chamber, resembling a vault, though whatever once lied here has long been taken, nothing but sand and dirt in its place. Glowing lines in the walls give a pale light to see by. Everything is made from smooth sold pieces of stone with pillars holding up the roof. Seeing no reason to stay you get up to leave, rip off a piece of your clothing and wrap it around the apple before tying it to your waist.

You follow a long narrow hallway, the only path you find, until you finally see light. You start to speed up until finally you're out. You feel warm, dry wind and see vast flat arid plains. You have no idea where Nergal has taken you. Lacking anywhere else to go you start to head north towards mountains you can see in the distance. A few days later you find yourself in a small town. You try to ask people where you are but they all avoid you, and what words you hear them say you cannot understand, they seem to speak a different language.

That is until you are approached by a man, skinny and old, who starts to speak to you in heavily accented Italian. "So, did you find your treasure young man?" Treasure? That must be what Nergal claimed he was doing, treasure hunting. You decide the best way to get through this is to play along "No, no, nothing but sand and dirt I'm afraid. The entire trips been a waste. I need to get home soon or I fear I'll make even more of a fool of myself. Could you tell me the quickest way to Italy from here, I fear the way I came might not be so safe right now."

"Well it seems you picked up some manners on your hunt at least. Well you came this way from Istanbul, but if that's not safe you might want to head north, take a ship out from Georgia. Stubborn folk but I'm sure they can't ignore good coin." So you came from Istanbul, once Constantinople, and are south of Georgia, maybe you're in Armenia, or perhaps Trebizond? how long has he been in control that you've gotten this far?

You thank the man and say you'll take his advice. Thankfully you do have coin on you, hopefully enough for passage on a ship. It takes you a weeks hike but you reach Georgia without trouble, and soon find a ship willing to take you where you want to go. Now where exactly is that?

???, the way home
[Experiment: Learning, 42+15=57]

Soon after getting on the ship you lock yourself in your assigned quarters. After making sure the door is completely locked you pull out the apple. Such a small thing, you would not believe its power if you had not seen and felt it first hand. From what you'd seen when used by Savonarola and Nergal, there was key or button or any sort of mechanism that made it function, merely their will. And so, you will it to give you knowledge.

Gold light erupts from the orb, and in that light you see figures you vaguely recognize. Then it hits you, this is a map. You recognize the shape of Italy and Greece, though this map seems far more detailed, and even more accurate, then all maps you have seen. It seems to cut off somewhere in the middle of Persia, but it extends beyond the ocean, perhaps even the coast of this new world you had heard about.

You go to grab paper and quill, hoping to record this map for perhaps future use, but are stopped by a knocking at the door. "Sir, are you alright in there? I seen a lot of light coming under your door." Damn, you'd almost forgotten you weren't alone. "Oh, yes, I'm fine friend, just, uh, experimenting with a new lantern I had bought back in Georgia, uses mirrors and glass to focus and brighten the fires light. Thank you though for your concern."

Thankfully he believes you and leaves without trouble. However you soon notice that your body feels exhausted. Using the apple had taken a lot out of you, and so you drag yourself to your cot to rest only to find yourself waking up the next morning. From then on you practice more restraint with the apple, using it only briefly and when you believe no one will come upon you using it. Most of your journey is spent like this, brief uses of the apple where you try to finish the map then rest for a few hours, your body protesting the continued use.

Gained one map of the American coasts.

Soon the ship docks in the port of Ravenna, and while its not quite as you remember it, it seems that the guard has increased and the walls have been expanded just from a first glimpse, it is largely the same. Thankfully for now no one seems to recognize you. you suppose you haven't exactly made yourself presentable, hair having grown long and facial hair doing much the same. You make your way into the city proper.

From the inside things look good. Markets full and bustling, some of the damaged buildings have been repaired and the gallows have been fully made. That parts probably not as good, it implies that they have had need of a permanent execution spot. And all this construction, while good for the city, means you've been gone longer than you thought.

You need to find someone you know, perhaps one of your advisors? You decide to find Zelic first, you remember where the man lived and you doubt he would have left. You make your way through semi familiar alleys and streets until you eventually reach the humble home of your chancellor. You knock upon its doors, and wait, growing nervous that no one might be here, but eventually the door opens and you see a familiar, if balder, figure.

He takes a look at you and says "If you're some kind of beggar or solicitor, I don't have anything for you, now what do you want?" "No Sir Zelic, I've come to ask you a few questions, starting with do you really not recognize me? I am Valentino, your former employer." At this he pauses and stares at you, a look of shock growing on his face. "It can't be, we thought you had died like everyone else at Firenze." Everyone? Was it really that much of a slaughter for the Ring of Gold?

"I can assure you sir, I live still, and I'm no ghost nor specter come to haunt Ravenna. I've come to resume my work and get some answers, if you will give them." "Lord above. Come in, come in, ill tell you what I can, though I don't have many details. And find somewhere to sit, you look exhausted.'

You find a comfy enough chair near his fireplace while he heads into his pantry, pulling out what looks like wine, which he puts over the fire. "Alright kid, start with your questions while I warm this up, this feels like a conversation that will need some wine." "Well first, and don't laugh when I ask this, what year is it? I haven't asked anyone for fear of seeming a fool." Zelic seems baffled by this, partially justifying your reticence, before saying "It is the nineteenth of October, the year of our lord 1498, it's been over a year and a half since you had disappeared."

It feels like you take a blow to the chest upon hearing this. He had your body over a year? It makes sense with the work you've seen on the city but it still feels impossible. Zelic takes the glass from the fire and pours two cups and hands you one, which you quickly empty before he refills it. You still need to know more, so you ask your next question. "What happened in Firenze? The priest was dead last I saw, were there truly no survivors from the ring of gold?" "No child, no one survived, and I don't mean just your mercenaries, I mean anyone in the city. As far as I know you are one of a handful of survivors."

Once again it feels like the world slips from under you. The entire city, dead? "After there was no word from you or anyone in Firenze groups were sent to see what happened, and found a bloodbath. Outside the walls your mercenaries and the soldiers of the city had torn each other apart, but inside the walls it was worse. It seems that the citizens were driven mad, possessed, and tore into each other. The men Sent there thought Savonarola had used whatever demonic powers he had to summon devils to take over the citizens in his defeat."

You had seen that when Nergal and Savonarola had each held the apple those around them started to fight among themselves, did it truly affect the whole city? Was it intentional or merely a mistake caused by the two both trying to use it? "Firenze has been quarantined essentially, priests going in to exorcize the place of any foul presence that remains, but it is no longer a city but a mausoleum for the people of Firenze."

With the trend of the questions you've asked so far you fear asking anymore, but you swallow another cup of wine to strengthen yourself before asking "What about here, Ravenna? What has changed, what's happened? And what about the war with France?" "The war has concluded, King Ferdinand sits once again on the throne of Naples, but Italy has come out of it bloodied. As for Ravenna, after your disappearance, your brother Cesare took over the governance. He's done his best to rule here but frankly that isn't where his skills lie. He claims that Firenze belongs to Romagna now, though it means little for a dead city. Sophia has also left, arguing between her and Cesare was relentless so she eventually decided to return home."

Well at least it isn't the horrors of the previous answers, but its still not great. Hopefully your brother will allow you to take your position back but he's always been possessive of power, you don't know if he'd enjoy giving it away. "And what about the rest of my family, what has happened with them?" "From what I hear your father is much the same, still pope and still has endless rumors about him coming out, each worse than the last. I don't know the man but your brother rants about him often for not sending more aid here. Juan is still leader of the papal forces though he took a bad wound in the French war and lost an eye. Your sister visits here often to speak with Cesare and has married Alfonso of Aragon, though there's no love from the way she speaks of him. Oh and Gioffre has apparently become apprentice to some painter, against your fathers wishes."

That's a relief at least, that none have died in your absence. You continue asking him questions, long into the night, and he offers to let you sleep here for the night and you gratefully accept. In the morning you plan to head to Cesares villa he's renovated in the city. Hopefully he'd be able to assist you with whatever you plan to do. But for now you need to rest, time at sea and use of the apple doesn't leave you with any good rest, and you sink into the bed you are offered.

---

[???, 4]

You wake up, earlier than you wanted, the sun not yet up but its light starting to break over the horizon. You rise from your bed and look around. Everything is still where you left it, clothes, dagger, and apple. You quickly dress and arm yourself just in case. Cesare is likely already awake by now, the man was always an early riser so you should be able to see him, so you grab an apple from Zelics pantry for an early breakfast and walk outside.

There, standing in the shadows of an alley you see a man, clad in dark hooded robes with some sort of blackened armor over it. You can barely make out his face, shadowed by his hood, but you make out a short beard with a scar over the lips. But what most draws your eye and fills you with dread is a symbol on his belt that Sophia made sure you recognize, a sort of triangle with a break in the bottom resembling the blade of a cinquedea dagger with filigree, the symbol of the assassins.

Dread grasps your heart as the man speaks to you from where he is. "Buongiorno Signore, I believe that we should speak, might you go back inside so we may speak in private?"

What do you do?

[] Use the apple, now. It wont matter if something goes wrong because you'll likely die without it

[] The man wants to speak, you're good at that, you can talk your way out of this

[] Throw your apple (the fruit) at him and run, you won't win a fight so get to Cesare and his forces now

[] Draw your dagger to defend yourself and tell him to leave before you call for the guard, if they're still trained correctly they should respond to someone yelling about assassins.
