Hero-30: The Remnant of Gold
Standing atop a throne of dirt, as the restless dead snarl and snap around her in both sickening and mechanical beats, it watches as she approaches the End. Now, with a quiet moment to contemplate all this, she sees the Omega Avatar for all that it is. She wears Luteus' face and appearance, and speaks with her voice. But her eyes are blue, and her Processor Unit is blue. If the Alpha Avatar was a copy of Luteus herself, form and powers…

...Then the Omega needs to die, as only then will its sins of betrayal wash away completely.

The Tainted look at her as she approaches, walking purposefully with her sword drawn and held to the side. They see her as a slab of meat, just another meal to sate their hunger and stay their torment. They lumber at her, meat and machine alike, all lusting for her flesh and essence.

Purple Heart continues walking. Her blade blurs with every crashing wave of the restless dead. She cuts through them like a tempest across a field, a force of nature. And her expression does not change. She remains determined, always driven, always yearning for her destruction.

She arrives at the foot of the throne of dirt eventually, an ocean of tainted ooze behind her. But her path, and her body, remain untouched by the corruption. The Avatar looks contemptuously down at her, one hand on her hip and the other holding her staff. She holds herself like a Goddess, but Purple Heart sees nothing behind that gaze. Does the Avatar even know what it is doing? Is all it is a set of directives and orders?

It sickens her thrice over. A Goddess' form, exploited as cheap propaganda by a soulless entity, twisted countless times to accept the essence of the Fallen Goddess, and driven onwards by an intelligence that knows nothing, wants nothing, and sees nothing but the orders laid before it. No ambition, no drive, no future. Nothing heroic. Nothing human.

"The Alpha is dead," it says, completely aware before she even arrived.

"Stay still and you can join her," Purple Heart tells her, knowing full well it will never be that easy.

The Omega Avatar smirks, and takes to the skies, flattening the throne of dirt beneath her. Purple Heart gives chase, her blade flashing.

The sky becomes a cacophony of blue, purple, and white light. The battle is joined. And the Sword of the New Dawn proves herself again.

----

The Battle for the Crow's Nest would last another five hours, but victory was decided at that moment, when Black Heart fell upon the host of Einherjar and when Purple Heart passed judgement on the second Avatar. From that point on, there was no resolution but victory.

The Dawnbreakers retreated, a shattered force a shadow of its former self. Though the losses inflicted on both sides would require more detailed analysis, it is estimated that half the Einherjar were slain by battle's end, along with both Avatars. It would heal in time, as all of the Truth's formations did. But until then, the Crows Nest will be silent.

But the Battle of the Crow's Nest would be a momentous occasion not for the victory, or for the respite it bought. It would not even be remembered for the return of a Goddess (or two) to deliver victory.

It was momentous, for the last son had returned.

----

The first thing that struck Purple Heart when she returned was how big the Crow's Nest was. Even the exposed courtyard was humongous, a massive staging ground large enough to hold a thousand tanks, surrounded by high walls and watchtowers, like a stone castle like in the books. But these walls were not made of stone, but of reinforced rockcrete and adamantine. A marvel of engineering, designed in an older age to last the apocalypse.

The second thing that struck Purple Heart was how busy it still was. Everywhere she turned there were tents and buildings for a thousand functions. Trucks were arriving by the minute, full of soldiers both tired and wounded alike. Tanks were set up in rows and rows and rows, a massive parade square for gas-masked engineers and technicians to inspect and repair. It was a huge orderly mob of men and women, headed to and fro any place you could imagine, kept cohesive only by discipline and their officers giving direction. There must be as many as three times as many people here as there are in the Refuge - and everyone here is a soldier.

The third thing the struck her was how everyone was looking at her. When she landed, a space in the mob of men and women immediately opened up to receive her. Dozens of eyes, practically hundreds, all looking at her in awe and surprise. She is not surprised - she is a Goddess, clad in her Processor, wielding a sword of purple lightning and practically uninjured despite the fierce fighting. All a sham, of course - HDD seems to reject dirt as a concept, and her wounds have already healed over. But the image matters, and they bought it.

Knowing the intellectual reasons does little to help, however. Right now, she feels self-conscious at her… exposed appearance. She quashes the feelings immediately and presents a front of self-assured power, but that does nothing to stop her embarrassment. Perhaps as Neptune she would have no sense of shame to stop her showing off, but Purple Heart is… Well, dignity is its own weakness.

Still, she is a Goddess, and she is dignified and elegant, so she moves past her feelings. Purple Heart nods at them, dismisses her sword, and heads for the first man she sees. "Excuse me, do you know of a small party that came by not too long ago? There was a girl with them. Red hair, tied up in a ponytail."

The soldier gulps and nods, hands scrambling over his rifle in an attempt to look dignified. He is around her height, and his voice sounds scratchy. A young man, perhaps? Or just war-weary? "I-I don't think so, no… Uh, maybe the Colonel knows something about it." He looks around, and suddenly the crowd has dispersed, leaving him alone. "Shit, where can you find him…"

"Trooper." The soldier suddenly snaps to attention, standing stiffly straight and rattling less. Another soldier comes by, a taller man that stands a head over the Goddess. "Something the matter, trooper?"

He wears the same garb, a gas hood and body armor, but in addition to a rifle he carries a bow and quiver. An unusual individual, to be sure. A Hero, then? An officer definitely, considering the authority he commands.

"Ye-Yes sir! She, uh, I mean… The Goddess, sir, she was looking for a girl and--"

"Take a breath, trooper," the officer says calmly, his voice flat and even and only hiding hints of annoyance. "Where does the Goddess…" He cranes his head at her.

"Purple Heart," she tells him, mildly amused at how grown men are babbling around her. This could be fun.

"Where does Lady Purple Heart want to go?"

"T-The Colonel, sir!" The soldier spits out finally, still rattling like a leaf in the wind. "S-She was looking f-for a girl with a red ponytail, a-and I didn't know, so I said t-that the Colonel might, sir!"

The officer nods. "You're free to go, trooper. I'll take her to the Colonel."

"Y-Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." The soldier tries to salute, hits himself in the eye, and stumbles off into the crowd.

Purple Heart smiles as he leaves before looking at her new guide. "So what do I call you, 'sir'?"

"Call me Ironside," he says to her. "Come with me."

----

It is a long walk by the standards of walks, and they finally arrive at what Neptune guesses to be the command center. It is an unassuming structure in the middle of the Crow's Nest, two storeys tall with a radio mast mounted on the top. It is fully sealed and boxy, with no windows and only a door. It looks more like a bunker than a CC, though that may be the point.

She and Ironside step through the door into an airlock, where the door seals tightly behind them and the air is purified by filtration systems. Purple Heart allows herself a twinge of nostalgia, but ignores it before long. Best not to dwell on those thoughts.

When the light flashes green, the door on the other side opens and they step through. Inside, the command center is bright and tinted blue by the lights, dozens of screens lit up and scrolling with information. Officers, analysts and aides flit through the post-battle pandemonium as they analyse their remaining strength, tabulate the wounded and consider how much they have won or lost. A few turn their heads to look at her, but the rest continue working. Unlike the soldiers outside, these men and women seem to have better things to worry about.

"This way," Ironside says, and heads up the stairs, feet clomping heavily against the metal steps. Purple Heart follows, floating up behind him soundlessly. There are guards at the top of the steps, gas masked just like Ironside, both of them about as tall as Purple Heart. They salute Ironside as he passes and holds the door open for the both of them. And through the door, she sees the second level of the command center.

It is, if anything, as chaotic as the first floor. Which is an achievement, considering there are five times as many people downstairs as there are upstairs. She sees officers, many still in combat attire with their gas hoods hanging off their necks, standing around a large holo-projection table discussing deployment plans furiously. She sees one of the people in black muscle suit, their helmet removed to reveal their face - and gender, they appear to be female. And she sees a bald man with is sleeves rolled up, hands folded as he speaks to a girl wearing black twintails.

And then she sees them. Tekken, tending to Falcom's superficial wounds, including a shallow cut on the side of her head - already dressed. Falcom, talking energetically about the battle from her perspective. She steps towards them, but Ironside keeps a hand on her shoulder.

"I've brought Goddess Purple Heart, Colonel," Ironside says to the room. The bald man nods at him, and Ironside brings her to the table. He extends a hand to her, which Purple Heart accepts.

"Pleasure to meet you, Lady Purple Heart," the man says brightly, his voice like gravel. "I'm Colonel Burton, commander of the Crow's Nest, and it is damn good you showed up when you did."

"The pleasure is mine, Colonel," she responds. "I only hope my arrival has made a difference."

"Oh, it certainly has. We might have won if you didn't show up, but the casualties would have been immense. Who knows what those Avatars may have done."

Purple Heart nods, and opens her mouth to ask about her grandfather, but the girl speaks first.

"What are you still doing transformed?" She steps forward, pointing an accusing finger at her. "That is a waste of shares! Change back, now!"

Purple Heart looks at her. She tilts her head. Only now does she notice the girl has a single silver bar sewn on her fatigues. "I'm assuming… Black Heart?"

"It's 1st Lieutenant Emiya right now," the girl huffs, and folds her arms. "Look, if we're going to talk, you might as well change back. Or would you rather I meet your human form after you pass out?"

Purple Heart nods. Truthfully she should have changed back already, but the walk was longer than expected, and floating up the stairs was more efficient. There is a bright flash of purple, and then she is Neptune again.

And then Lt. Emiya gives her a nasty case of stink eye.

The other Goddess is a small girl. Great."

Neptune pouts. "Hey, I'm sixteen! And you're not much bigger yourself, Lieutenant."

"Yes, but I actually look our age."

Neptune gasps. "Oh my god you're sixteen too? We're, like, age-sisters!"

The Lieutenant looks at her. She looks at the Colonel, who shrugs. She looks at Ironside, who shrugs. And then she palms her face. "Oh my god and I thought you were cool…"

"You thought I was cool? Awesome, because I thought you were also cool. We're, like, cool-sisters!"

"Do you ever shut up?!"

"Nope!"

"GAH!"

Col. Burton laughs, and then he snaps to attention suddenly. "ATTEN-HUT!"

Everyone but Tekken, Falcom and Neptune goes stiff. Even Lt. Emiya, who is now stone-faced and facing the door. The doors squeak shut, someone bumps their head, and swears softly like she wouldn't hear it.

Joshua Kyrain arrives, and nods to everyone. "At ease, at ease… It's been a long time."

The room descends into quiet mutters as officers discuss the Solar Hero that just arrived. Neptune always knew her grandfather was basically a celebrity, but she did not know he had the power to turn highly disciplined military officers into squealing schoolgirls. Lt. Emiya is just a shivering mess at this point, not sure how to react to… well, the last Solar Hero in the world.

Her grandpa walks over, and greets Col. Burton again. "Tight ship you run here, Colonel. Boy, am I glad we found you."

"Likewise like you wouldn't believe, sir," the Colonel says with awe. "Here I thought the forward battlements would fall, but then you arrived and turned the whole thing around. Isn't that right, Major?"

"Pretty much, sir," the woman in the black muscle suit shouts back, and she salutes her grandfather again. "Look forward to serving with you again, sir!"

Joshua shakes his head and waves her down. "Colonel, please. I'm still a 2nd Lieutenant."

"Holy crap I outrank Joshua-fucking-Kyrain," Lt. Emiya mutters under her breath.

The Colonel laughs. "You could be a private and I'd still call you sir, sir. Or would you prefer Lord Kyrain?"

"Just Joshua is fine, Colonel."

"As you wish, milord."

Joshua laughs and slaps the Colonel on the back. "So, who's the other Goddess I've been hearing about?"

"M-Me, sir," Lt. Emiya squeaks. "1st L-Lieutenant Noire Emiya, 33rd Armored, E Company, 2nd Platoon, sir!"

"Oh my god you are such a fangirl," Neptune grins.

"S-Shut up! Why aren't you fangirling?!"

"I heard about the Avatar, Lieutenant," Joshua says with a nod. "Good work out there. You'll be good friends with Neptune, I know it."

Noire freezes. She turns to Neptune slowly, her body creaking like old clockwork. Her next words chill with the cold of death. "W-What's your name," she breathes.

"Neptune J. Joestar!" Neptune chirps. "Oh, but I guess Neptune Kyrain is more accurate now!"

Noire goes stiff and makes a noise like a quietly deflating balloon. Neptune laughs and pats her on the shoulder. Colonel Burton shrugs and continues discussing things with her grandfather. And Ironside, being Ironside, shrugs.

Neptune sighs happily. This might be the best place ever.

And then Tekken squeaks suddenly, moments before Falcom tackles her to the ground.

----

"Falcoooooom…"

"Sorry, sorry, I'm just so excited! Like we were out there, and man you should have seen it! It was like one of those war movies we watch at home! The Truth were rushing in like 'vree vree vree' and our guns were firing like 'budabudabudabuda', and there were sergeants everywhere shouting one-liners and catch phrases, and Chief Joshua was punching Einherjar in the face and beating them with other Einherjar, and then this one dude shot a tank in half with an arrow--"

"Woah woah woah." Neptune puts her hand on Falcom's mouth, who continues yammering on in muffled tones for a full second and then wilts out of embarrassment. She looks at Ironside, the strange officer who brought her here, and very pointedly at the black bow slung on his back. "You say someone shot a tankbot in half. With bow and arrow."

"The arrow exploded!" Falcom adds helpfully.

Neptune looks at Ironsides in disbelief. Noire, right beside her, midway through (begrudgingly) helping her up, frowns harshly at the officer. The man himself, being an apparent cool cucumber, just shrugs.

"You shot the tankbot in half. With an arrow."

"Your grandfather beat three Einherjar to death with an arm he tore off himself," Ironside responds dryly.

"Yeah, but he's grandpa. He does this sort of thing on a regular basis!"

"What, so people who aren't Solar Heroes can't do cool things?" Noire shakes her head and pinches Neptune on the cheek ("Neppu~!") before looking apologetically at Joshua. "Sorry, didn't… I mean… You're uh…"

Joshua laughs, arms crossed. "You two will get along very nicely."

"But she's small and mouthy and a pipsqueak!"

"You just said I was small twice I'm not even that much shorter than you!"

"That's how it starts," Joshua says with a big grin.

"I think she's growing on me," Colonel Burton adds beside him.

"Like a fungus," Joshua adds helpfully.

Noire buries her face in her hands and makes the balloon deflating noise again. Neptune leans over to pat her head out of sympathy, but she slaps her hand away harshly. Perhaps too harshly. Maybe it's denial? Hee.

"You know Luteus is a genus of bacteria," Joshua starts.

"I've heard this story before," Colonel Burton nods sagely. He snaps his fingers. "Oh, speaking of stories… Lt. Emiya, hands are for holding, not for hiding."

She lowers them and sighs. "Sir."

"Mmhm. Regardless, you did well today. And you are a Goddess now."

"Thank you, sir."

"Which is why I'm filing for your promotion to Captain."

Noire looks at him with wide eyes. "Sir, I've only been Lieutenant for a year and I'm sixteen--"

"You're a Goddess," he asserts firmly. "You carry more responsibility than I ever could, would, or want to ever wish for. The least I could do is make sure you have the privileges of rank, too." He tilts his head at Joshua. "You're eligible for promotion too, S-Joshua."

"In maybe two years," Joshua says with a sad laugh.

"Try two hundred and fifty four years ago," the Colonel says with a small smile. "We've never actually marked you KIA, so you've been on active duty this entire time. Roughly… two hundred and sixty years?"

"Two hundred fifty nine," Joshua corrects. He blinks. "Wait… Then…"

"I'll file it for the Lords General, special dispatch," Colonel Burton says calmly. "But yeah, you're basically a Captain at this point. Might even kick you up to Major, if we're lucky. Colonel's an appointment-only posting, though. Sorry."

Joshua waves his hands. "No, I don't care about the rank. I think I just beat Master Sergeant Reuben's record."

Neptune tilts her head. Master Sergeant Reuben? She looks at Noire, who is similarly confused.

"Master Sergeant Reuben…" The Colonel hems and haws, and then he snaps his fingers. "Oh, from the Duel at Darvos." His jaw drops. "Oh my, you just beat MSgt. Reuben's record."

"By around a year, yes." Joshua leans against the holo-table and laughs. "Hah, and I never thought I'd see the day!"

"Who's MSgt. Reuben?" Noire asks.

"Was he an old dude?" Neptune ponders.

Joshua looks kindly - and piteously - at his godly granddaughter. "Neptune, do you remember the tree story I told you when you were younger?"

"Which tree story? There are a lot of tree stories."

Colonel Burton gives Joshua a puzzled look. "The trees in Lanca are metal and explode in summer," Joshua explains. "Some of them also shed razor glass at mach speed, grow explosive fruit, and excrete acid strong enough to vaporise a cubic foot of rockcrete in fifteen seconds. Usually not all at once." He clicks his tongue. "Usually."

"Ah," the Colonel says understandingly.

"What the fuck," Noire says flatly.

Joshua nods at Neptune. "It's the story where one man beat another to death with a tree stump."

"And then died," Colonel Burton adds.

"...Because his heart exploded from the effort," Noire concludes, now deathly aware that, as a Goddess, she could well do the same thing.

Neptune snaps her fingers. "Oh! Man, I love that story!" She tilts her head. "Wait, then how did MSgt. Reuben serve for two hundred and fifty eight years in the army?"

"MSgt. Reuben was a Solar Hero," Joshua explains. "He was one of the best. And his final battle against a Champion of the Silver Empress more or less ended the Tari Proxy War in an Eopran Victory." Colonel Burton raises his hand for a high-five, and Joshua responds with a meaty clap. "He is a legend, for good reason."

Neptune nods. "So what happens if you break his record?"

"Legend goes that he will crawl out of his tree-grave and beat you to death," Colonel Burton says, completely serious.

Joshua shudders. "I hope that was a joke. I do not want to face MSgt. Reuben in a battle to the death. He probably has tree hands at this point."

"And tree feet," Colonel Burton adds. "All the better to kick you with."

"That sounds awesome," Neptune says with stars in her eyes. The room choruses with agreement.

Noire just sighs and palms her face again. "I'm a Goddess and I'm surrounded by idiots."

Neptune leans over to pat her head sympathetically, and Noire bats it away harshly again. "Wow, Noire, you're like a cat!"

"I AM NOT A CAT!"

----

Faction Encountered: Eopran Army Remnant

Name: The Eopran Army Remnant

Faction Disposition: Friendly
Faction Attrition: 24/100

Description:
The parts of the Eopran Army along the eastern coast of Eopra, still loyal to CPU Yellow Heart. The main enemy of the Truth and the foe they have been mobilising against. The other great power on the Eopran continent, they are a mere shadow of the gargantuan Eopran Army from before the Fall. However, they are still an impressive force, and retain much of the Eopran Army's arsenal, including the T-54 'Kalos' Main Battle Tank and The ACHILLES Mk-IV Integrated Battlesuit, as well as a vast industrial base to support their strength.

Known Notable Figures:
- Col. Mattis Burton (Crow's Nest Commander, Character Sheet Hidden)
- 'Ironside' (Mysterious Bowman, Character Sheet Hidden)
- CPU Black Heart, 1st Lt. Noire Emiya (The Dark Angel, Character Sheet Hidden)

Note: If the Remnant reach 100 Attrition, they will be unable to help Neptune fight the Truth! Time is precious, so prepare to kill the Truth ASAP!

----

Purple Heart is now Combat Aptitude 8!

Falcom is now Combat Aptitude 5!

Tekken is now Combat Aptitude 6!

----

With contact made and the Truth chased off, an official diplomatic relationship between the Refuge and the Eopran Army Remnant is being established right now. Until then, though, Neptune will have a few days to herself and her friends, time she can spend however she likes. But with who, and doing what?

Choose Two:

[] Noire seems like she could use the friendship. Go spend time with her, see what's what!

[] Go spend time with Falcom, now that she's so enamoured with the place. Also sparring yays.

[] Tekken probably wants someone to help sort through everything that just happened. Help her find that someone!

[] Grandpa Joshua has just learned that the Eopran Army is still a thing. Spend time with him, and be there when he gets promoted!

[] Col. Burton is busy managing the post-battle matters at the Crow's Nest, but not so busy that he can't be a good host. Go poke him a little, and have fun.

[] Ironside is a complete enigma, but he's not unpleasant to be around. Maybe go with him, and ask him to show her the arrow trick. Might be useful in HDD, too! If she can learn it.

[] Just wander around the Crow's Nest, since it's so big and there's so much to do. Oh, how interesting.
- [] Hell, do it in HDD. Might give the soldiers here something nice to look at.

[] Find a secluded spot and make contact with Luteus. She has been awfully quiet this entire time and it's starting to get… Well, not concerning… Curious, that's the word.

[] Write-In

A/N: Codex Entries for the T-54 MBT, the ACHILLES and the Duel at Darvos are pending and will be posted... Eventually

Missed the opening quote marks, there.

Ah, I see Grandpa is proficient in that ancient Solar Technique, 'Beat A Motherfucker With Another Motherfucker'. :)

A new Goddess that we've already fought beside, and a man who can blow up tanks with a bow and arrow. Let's see if we can learn that bow trick, and get to know Noire/Black Heart. We're going to need her on our good side to make sure our factions can integrate, and to fight the Truth.

Get to know the new Goddess, and help her start to come to terms with her new position. At a minimum getting to know Ironside will expand Neptune's knowledge of exotic techniques, and making a new friend is pretty much always a good thing.

I'm kinda amused how the Omega Avatar is just killed off-screen like that.
Like they fought, Nep won: the end.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to adjust Neptune's Combat Aptitude rating, especially since I forgot to bump it up after her session with Luteus and Herk. She should be Combat Aptitude 7 right now in HDD after that, and after this... well, we'll see.
Did we do well Swordo?

I'm somewhat surprised that Joshua doesn't just plain outrank nearly everyone by default. Pretty cool though that they're savvy enough to predict that he never actually died.

Although we need to find out, does the Remnant have any Ripple masters? If so, they've probably got some more potential students for Joshua.

Interesting to see that Noire (and presumably Uni) being Emiyas hasn't changed from the original version.
Purple Unit Desires Dating Intelligent Noire Goddess
Pudding Users Do Dangerous, Incredible, Nice, Great Stuff
Pudding Unlocks Dangerous Deeds In Neptunes Glory
Pudding Undoes Dastardly Deeds In Neptunes Glory
Pudding Undoes Death, Dying Is Not Good
Puberty Unfortunately Delayed, Date-ability Is Not Great
People, Unless Dying, Don't Interrupt Neptunes Gaming
Well, the original in-need-of-improvement version was "Purple Union of Divinely Destined Inheritors of Nacma's Glory".

As for making it be a Recursive Backronym, perhaps:
  • Pudding Unites Deities Defending Innocent National Groups
  • Pudding Ushers Dramatic Dates Involving Neighborhood Girls
  • Pudding Urges Divine Damsels Into Nullifying Gloom

"Purple Unit Desires Dating Intelligent Noire Goddess."

I like this part. Not sure it can be valid name, though.

[X] Find a secluded spot and make contact with Luteus. She has been awfully quiet this entire time and it's starting to get… Well, not concerning… Curious, that's the word.
