Driving through the country had been… far more troubling than any of you would have liked.
Keith had spent the entire first day a raving mess, and honestly, you kinda did the same for the first day.
Adderall helped with some of the pain, but Tom had to dig the bullets out of your body before… sealing the wounds.
Could you have done it? Maybe, but you were more worried that you would have made a mistake while being mostly blinded by the pain. Now you had two new scars, one in your arm, and one really close to your ribs, along with some broken bones.
Alchemy was still doable, just painful, and you couldn't exactly go into a doctor's office without probably getting stuck in a cell and being the next 'suicide' during your stay.
While Alkehestry helped, that's all it did. Help.
Making earthen spikes is a hell of a lot easier to do, even over vast distances, than the complex and very risky process of trying to fix the human body. You didn't want to go to that White Room again. Ever.
At least you were able to help Mia and Tom with the strays that they caught, the old man having been shot somewhere in his leg during the ambush. Making his actions the night before much more impressive, especially shooting a thrown grenade from on top of a moving vehicle.
You had to take refuge in a small town for about a day or so when you'd driven far enough, Rosa taking over driving duty when you had all crashed when the adrenaline had worn off. Tom took it the best, simply gritting his teeth as you'd healed his leg, but you and Mia had knocked out soon after that, Keith barely able to keep his body from trembling.
Now, you and Mia were hiding in a small closet, your friend dragging you into it when she'd spotted two men approaching you, both just looking like normal guys.
That was, until you'd spotted the bulge at their hips.
"You sure you saw her?" One of them asked in fast Spanish that you only understood through osmosis of living with Mia for so many years.
"Yeah, she was older than the photos, but she looked like the boss enough that I'm sure of it." The other one said, voice far lighter, quieter, but just as intense.
"She was with that kid that we got a photo for. The one that the boss 'friends' promised to pay for." Your stomach dropped hearing that, and Mia stared at you with wide, giant eyes that conveyed just as much fear as what you were feeling.
"Can't be just the two of them. No way that two kids could take out that many of our boys without some help." Good, that meant that they didn't know about Tom, Keith and Rosa. Small consolation, but a good enough one. How the hell did they manage to get this before you though?
"Come on, they can't have gotten far. The sooner we find little Mia, the sooner we can head back south across the border after dropping her off." Their footsteps moved away after that, and neither of you two made a sound, a fly could have farted, and it would have roared like a lion.
Eventually, you both stood up, getting out of the broom closet, following the two men's movements through your senses, relaxing as they went the opposite of where your room was at.
"It's your dad." You said to Mia, not an ounce of doubt in your mind.
"I fucking thought that the asshole had given up by now." Mia growled out, lying through her teeth. You both knew that her dad wasn't about to give up on his bargaining chip until he had her back where he could control her, or he had a corpse on his fancy 'clean' table. "How did he find us?"
"Those assholes back at the city were probably more of your dads 'family'." Probably had been tipped off by whoever was stealing kids, though that was more a guess than anything else. A bounty being placed on your head was… not good. Very, very not good.
"Right, first we were being hunted down by asshole demigods with gold weapons and monsters, now we have to deal with my asshole dad on top of it!" Mia complained, her face red with rage while she hissed quietly to herself, the trembling in her hands telling all that you needed to know about how she was really feeling.
While New York had its own issues, there was a reason why Mia preferred to stick around there than leave.
Because of how many people there were, it was a hell of a lot easier to hid in a crowd of millions than it was trying to settle in a backwards little town out in the country. And now that you were a known power by whoever was in New York, it meant they probably knew what you both looked like. If they could shut off entire streets and isolate Central Park of all places, them looking for any camera footage of the two of you wasn't too unbelievable
You shivered at realizing that there were probably more people hunting for you now. Not just whoever was pulling those monsters and possible demigods from the shadows, but whoever they could get in their pocket by throwing money around.
"We need to go. We can curse your prick of a father later when we're out of town." You said, moving as fast as your body could take you, ignoring the pain in your body as you did.
"I'm sorry." Mia then said as she took your arm and helped you move back towards your room. "If it wasn't-"
"Then I'd probably be a lot more alone right now than I already am." You cut her self depreciation off, knowing that it was all bull. "Whatever I pulled earlier… it caught 'peoples' attention, and probably not just theirs." the memory of rumbling thunder and the way that your friends looked at you that day when you had finally controlled that spark of Light in your body flashed in your mind. "Whatever that was, I would have probably reached for it on my own even if we didn't know each other, then that would have brought heat all on its own. If not that, then whatever other crap is coming down the pipeline."
.
She doesn't say anything else after that, just grabs one of your hands with her own and squeezing, her silent thanks music to your ears as you grab the rest of your little party and high tail it out of town.
Keith
How the hell had his life reached this point.
Oh, right, he'd let that little part of his brain that told him right from wrong convince him that being an asshole that let kids get beat probably was a dick move.
Though, finding out that Francis had been a monster wasn't that surprising and maybe gave his conscience a confidence boost. Goddammit.
Now you had the fucking Cartel coming after your asses.
"And you didn't think to let us know that your daddy was a… 'book keeper' for our neighbors downstairs because?" He asked in a higher pitched voice, already feeling plenty enough stress, thank you very much.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I just thought that maybe introducing yourself as 'cartel accountant's daughter' was a very rude way to make first impressions!" Mia growled at him from the back of the van, baring her teeth at him in a way that made her look more like a demon than a daughter of a love goddess. Because those were things now.
Gods and other mythical creatures were real. Sure, why not.
If his life was going nowhere, might as well add in some fucking spice into the mix, right!?
Oh, who was he kidding, it wasn't like knowing this crap made much of a difference. He'd been working for Francis for years, and only just now found out when they'd finally done something that even he wasn't ok with. Robbing a family blind when they weren't home? Sure.
Plant some weed on this one asshole that wasn't paying his money on time? You got it.
Beating up some kids and kidnapping a girl to sell her off to who knows where? Even thieves had a line, and that was his.
And now he was paying for it by being some creepy ass kid's underling.
"Regardless, we have people after us, and that means that we have to keep moving forward." The creepy kid said, his hair more white than black, head ducked down and eyes closed as he concentrated on a 'feeling' he'd been having.
Keith would be more skeptical, if he hadn't seen the kid turn into Vladimir the Impaler and almost kill an entire park full of teens and kids.
Seeing Francis get ganked had been nice though.
The red haired young man focused on the road, though sometimes stealing glances back at the magic teen, having gotten used to this game of hot and cold they'd been playing. It wasn't so bad honestly.
Was he running for his life?
Sure. But hey, he'd never gotten to travel outside of NYC before, so that was a plus, even if his life was on the line. Magic was real… and he would be lying if he wasn't interested.
It wasn't like he was ever going to be anything else but a petty thief. At least now he had a boss who wasn't a piece of shit and could give him something other than just money and beatings.
Suddenly, Von's eyes flew open, and Keith had to make sure that he didn't crash them into the trees in surprise as golden rings stared at him from pitch black voids. It was only for a second, but it was enough for him to think that his boss was going to drag him down into hell any minute now.
It was over as fast as it happened, with clear eyes looking at him in concern through the cracked glass.
"You alright Keith? See something behind us?" The kid asked, eyes going glassy, no doubt doing that weird 'dragon pulse' thing he was doing earlier.
"Fine boss… thought I saw something." But it was just a trick of the light.
Right?
Merric Von Ordelia
The man behind the counter was thin, with chin length straight dark brown hair, high cheekbones, and a neat beard with grey mixed in with his dark whiskers. He wore modest clothing, a long sleeved shirt that was just baggy enough that you might have missed the muscles that he hid underneath his clothes, his hands calloused and strong as he finished writing something in his little notebook as his quiet glance turned your group's way.
"Welcome to the Little Continental. How might I be of service?" His words were low, quiet, and just a little stilted. Not in that he lacked confidence, oh no, he met your gaze easily enough, standing tall and proud, no, the halting in his words sounded like he was just not a talkative person, like he was just not used to having to speak to people much.
"Could we please have four rooms?" Rosa asked, choosing to be the face of the group as she gave the man a beatific smile that would probably catch most men off guard.
The man just gave a slight nod, completed the transaction, and passed over four keys for them. "We serve breakfast at 7AM, and provide room service if you are interested, just make sure to dial the front desk. If there is anything else that you might need, please do not hesitate to let us know."
Rosa nodded at the man, flashing him another smile, and turning towards the staircase of the quaint, yet cozy, wooden lobby of the three-story inn.
The man didn't watch Rosa go, like most of the men at various stops you had made, instead, he turned to look at you, dark brown eyes feeling like they were seeing right through you.
He stares at you for a few seconds, and for some reason you can't bear to move, before he grabs a piece of paper, and writes something on it before passing it over to you.
It isn't a phone number for child services or the cops, instead, passing you a note with a name and time on it.
Dr. Frank Mitchell
8AM-8PM
"I recommend that you see a doctor for that arm." He whispered to you, a look of understanding in his eyes.
You followed quickly behind Rosa when she gave the man a venomous look, not wanting her to start a fight with the stranger who seemed to just want to help.
You and Mia were sharing a room, which was just fine with the two of you. You'd basically been sleeping together in the same room for some years now… and you were honestly not used to being separated from her quite yet. It just felt… uncomfortable to sleep alone after so many years of being used to something.
"So, this place still giving you a strange vibe?" You asked Rosa as she looked out from the window and stared at the street of the town of Widow Spring, inspecting the architecture of the buildings like they offended her.
"Yes… I can't quite put my finger on it, but this all just… doesn't fit." She tapped one finger against the glass, glaring at the various trees that swayed in the night breeze.
"The trees for one, they aren't native here. At all." You frowned, staring at the giant towering trees that seemed to blend into the various buildings, great arms flowing with jade green leaves. Botany was outside your knowledge base, so you couldn't really see what she was talking about, but then she spoke up again. "Besides, don't you feel it here? That tang in the air? You led us here after all."
Well, that was true. It was faint, but there was more here in this town. Magic was everywhere, a simple fact of life that most people would never understand unless they were trained in the art, or had a proclivity for magic like some demigods. Yet, compared to New York, this place was close to screaming with magic. If New York was a whisper, then this was a conversation, a constant commentary that you couldn't help but listen to.
"The architecture is kinda weird here, too." You chimed in, looking across the street at a building that was more rounded and wooden than any you had ever seen. It was more like a wooden igloo with magnificently carved images of leaves and vines alongside the doorways, a little sign over the doorway that proclaimed it as a 'Tavern'.
"Yes. Rounded roofs aren't usually a good idea, given how much harder they are to maintain compared to more traditional ones. A curious choice." She said, pursing her lips and sniffing the air. "There is also something about this place that reminds me of you, Von. A suppression that keeps me from being able to sniff things out like I usually do."
"Well, this is where my feeling is coming from. So it isn't a surprise that it might have some of the properties that I do." Even if you couldn't understand it.
At least, for now, you knew that it was here, in the middle of South Dakota that the 'feeling' was coming from.
It was just time to start looking around.
And we are in our first real 'adventure'.
Now, please bear with me, as this is going to be something far less structured than regular turns.
No actual Dice to be used, simply options for you all to choose from. Think of this as more a social turn rather than anything else.
Please choose three.
[ ]Dr. Mitchel: The man who owns the Little Continental, John, gave you a note for a doctor after seeing your injuries. When was the last time you went to see a doctor? How about Mia? And you did have a broken bone along with some injuries that had required healing. Just because you can use Alkehestry, doesn't mean that it isn't a good idea for a follow up.
[ ]Search Woods: The entire town is surrounded by forests. According to Rosa, most of these trees aren't native to this area. Maybe you should try looking around the woods?
[/]Ask at the Tavern: You are 15 years old. You can't walk into a bar and ask around.
[ ]Stretch Your Senses: While the entire area is screaming at you whenever you reach out for it, maybe you could try your hand at narrowing your senses? It might take some work, but it couldn't hurt right?
[ ]Explore the Town: There have to be signs around town that might give you a clue on just what is calling to you. The longer you dwell here, the more certain you are that you are on the right track.
[ ]Explore With Keith: Keith, while the 'normal' one of the group, is far better acquainted with uncovering secrets and finding the people that worked in the shadier side of things.
[ ]Explore With Mia: You and Mia have been through thick and thin for the past few years, and know how to hide and where to look for 'hidden' spots. You don't know how many you could find in a town with about ten thousand people, but maybe you'd get lucky.
[ ]Explore with Tom: With age comes wisdom, and Tom has gotten very good at understanding people and breaking barriers with those that have had rougher lives, along with… probably rougher methods.
[ ]Explore with Rosa: Rosa has noticed that a lot of the architecture in the city is very unique, more so than any other American city or town that she has visited in her long life (you didn't think that). Look around with her and try to find the source of this feeling.
You will have five of these before those that have been tracking you catch up. Be wise with your time.
