How Hard Can It Be? A Battletech Arms Manufacturer Quest

hey guys just had a silly idea for a cheap to do project

make a Hilux with battletech CV grade materials.

edit: I just used megamek to build a 5 ton truck as a CV and as an SV and the CV is cheaper with better speed and slightly better armor

Can you fit an AC/2 or SRM on that thing?
an SRM2 with one ton ammo if you ditch the MG, turret and the troop capacity.

if you do half ton ammo you can keep the turret or the troop slots.

edit: just keep in mind this thing is in effect just a space humvee with armor to protect against small arms and maybe surive a Medium laser to the face long enough for the driver to bail out.

[X]Plan Finish is upon us
-[X] Accept the offer from the Duchess of Dalcour (+60 capital, -3% ownership)
-[X] Accept the offer from the Duke of Tormentine (+60 capital, -3% ownership)
- [X] Order the final assembly line from Geotech

Money comes in. And money goes out. With the latest - and hopefully last - round of investment secured, you've given Geotech the go-ahead to build the final piece of your factory.

Capital +120 -> 200.1
Lost: 6% ownership
Capital -100 -> 100.1

But, of course, that's only the main event. Your ongoing day-to-day income and expenses are still rolling along. Your armor factory is still chugging along steadily, producing another 800 tons of armor which you promptly sold, and your LRM-5 factory has turned out 200 missile racks this year. Your sales team has been hard at work on the latter, and you've been able to sell all of those as well. You'd be cleanly in the black (albeit not by a particularly large margin) if R&D wasn't so expensive, but that's just something you've come to expect, until the tanks start rolling off the line.

R&D: -12 Capital
Armor factory overhead: -2 Capital
Armor sales: +8 Capital
Armor royalties: -0.8 Capital
LRM launcher factory overhead: -2 Capital
LRM launcher sales: 6 Capital
LRM launcher royalties: -.4 Capital
Merrik's Musketeers: -1 Capital

Net: -4.2 -> 95.9

All in all, it's shaping up to be a great year: the year you finally get your Sloop factory built. The engine line machinery is nearly finished, and once that's done, your techs can start installing everything. Hopefully, Geotech will get the final assembly line done soon enough that they won't have to miss a beat there. And once that's done, it becomes a matter of training workers and working all the kinks out. Unless something goes terribly wrong, you should be able to deliver the first Sloops by the end of the year.

Soon.

"Sure is pretty, isn't it?"

An unbiased observer might disagree with Lou. The machinery sitting on the factory's concrete floor is still packed up from transport, some of it in roughly the right spots, but mostly just sitting in rows, and it's all uncompromisingly utilitarian.

You, not being an unbiased observer, instead nod. With the engine factory machinery now complete, everything but the final assembly line is ready to be assembled, and that's beautiful in ways that have nothing to do with your eyes. "Sure is, Lou."

Now that they're done with the engine line machinery, you're going to have your techs work on:

[X] Building the factory. Obviously.

"But don't sit and admire it too long, we still need to get it assembled."

Lou grins. "Damn straight. We're digging in first thing in the morning. You have a plant manager picked yet?"

"Yeah, Rebecca Shan's getting that promotion she's been angling for. She'll be handling most of the hiring."

"And we'll be getting pulled in for training duty again, no doubt," Lou says, with not-quite-suppressed distate.

You shrug slightly. "Afraid so. Not like anyone else can do it."

Lou just grunts resignedly, then changes the subject. "You get the electronics order in? Won't be too long before we need them."

Now it's your turn to grimace. "Yes, but I only managed to get my hands on 40 sets. That'll still be plenty for the first year when we're still getting up to speed, at least."

Capital -4 -> 191.9
Gained: 40 electronics sets (in transit)

"Huh, yeah. I hope that's a fluke, or we'll have to find a more reliable supply sooner or later."

The two of you stand it silence for a bit, chewing that over. Aylmer doesn't have much of an electronics industry, and neither of you know much about how to change that.

"... and thanks to those test runs, we have a full set of Sloop parts, plus another just missing the turret, ready to test out the final assembly line, once that's put together" Rebecca tells you, as the two of you plus Lou walk through the mostly complete factory. All four of the feeder lines are finished now, surrounding the space where the final assembly line is just starting to take shape. Most of the machinery is idle, but some workers and a couple of your techs are putting the turret line through its paces.

"Good to know," you say. "And the workforce?"

Rebecca waggles a hand. "We're up to about 50% staffing for one shift. That is for the completed factory, at least. The armor and missile factories didn't need as much manpower, but we seem to be straining the pool of experienced factory hands with this one. I expect to have to train up some fresh faces to fill out a second shift."

"Mmh. Disappointing, but not too surprising. And the final line?"

Lou waves an arm at the line in question. It's still mostly packed up and sitting on the floor, but progress has started at the north end of the space.

"Whatcha see is what ya get. We're just getting started, but so far everything's on track."

"Good. In that case-"

You're interrupted by a man in a militia uniform running up to you - a sergeant, if you remember the rank insignia correctly. "Mister Schafer! We just got word from the Colonel, somebody's jumped in to the L1 pirate point! We've got two dropships burning in, and they're not talking."

The three of you go silent. Pirates. Or Lyrans, which would be worse. But probably pirates.

"Shit," you finally say. "Any idea what they're after?"

"No idea," the sergeant says, shaking his head.

You suck in a breath through your teeth. "Well. We'd better be ready for anything. Is Merrick on-site? And how long until they get here?"

"Just a few hours. The militia's scrambling. And yes, Merrick's getting his men ready."

Lou turns to you. "What do you think, boss, bug out, or shelter in place?"

You have to think about that for a moment.

[] Send everyone home
- If the factory is the target, your workers will be safe. If it's not, and the target is somewhere near where they run to, you might lose some people.
[] Shelter in place
- Your people will be safe unless the factory is the target. If it is, then they're in trouble.

And is there anything else you want to do?

I'd argue this attack is directed at the tank factory it has to be given it's the only major thing happening on this world so I'd say get our people to go home.

[] Shelter in place

[] Hide any documentation

I don't think we are a targets. We have not produce anything and this is our first product. It is also not the best thing out there. So I think they might be hitting some other place.

The timing of this attack is a bit to convenient, somebody wants us to fail. Com* is one possibility but I'm hesitant to blame them because it's the obvious knee-jerk reaction from a meta perspective, and it could just as easily the Lyrans catching wind of our new factory and deciding to squash us before we have a chance to become a nuisance, or maybe its someone in the League who doesn't like the idea of competition and tipped off some pirates.

Very annoying before we have any sloops made that can be deployed. We do have the light mercs, the set of AC/5 field guns, the walls and multiple strongpoints and infantry. I wish we knew how big the dropships were because if they are on the smaller side we might have the forces to hold out.

Odds are they are Circinian, so they are either coming back for more germanium or want our armor production line.

[X] Send everyone home

No clue if we'd be the target or not, but when it comes down to it - if we keep our people here and get hit, their blood is on our hands. We send them home, then at least they'll be with their families if the worst happens.

Honestly I'm not so worried about the design data because, as this very situation demonstrates, the hard part isn't having a tank design, it's having a tank production line.

Granted, designs can be sold off to a bidder for a bit of quick cash by a pirate, so they are valuables that can be moved reasonably easily.

Still, it's very striking that we're getting raided right now while we have a lot of machinery lying around that hasn't been bolted to the floor yet...

No clue if we'd be the target or not, but when it comes down to it - if we keep our people here and get hit, their blood is on our hands. We send them home, then at least they'll be with their families if the worst happens.
Also, as a pragmatic matter, they'll be more dispersed and unlikely to die in large numbers unless a nuke hits the nearby city or something.

[X] Plan: We are the target.
-[X] Send everyone home
-[X] Grab your designs and keep them safe.

And we've just had this very same update telling us how hard it is to replace experienced factory workers on Aylmer. So even if not for that... we'd want to disperse unless we were a lot more confident in our defenses.

If we had a bunker? I'd say let em stay. As it is, best we disperse em. Two dropships means either one big target getting hit, or two smaller one. Germanium isn't a huge haul.... better safe than sorry.

But if they are not raiding our place and we send them home. We could loose workers and put us back even more for our production. I don't think they are after us.

I think so too. The Sloop is nothing special that comstar won't even care. Our stuff is nothing special.

It's very unlikely that we'd lose more than a few of our workers that way, because they don't all live in the same place, am I right?

I'd much rather lose a few percent of our workforce to casualties from a pirate raid than lose much, much more of the workforce because of a raid on the factory.

Yeah. Among other things, the more low-tech cheap-shit internal combustion vehicles are rolling around on battlefields throughout the Inner Sphere, the greater the probability that some irreplaceable Star League relic heavy mech gets blown to pieces and not rebuilt. It's not really against ComStar's overall "forced primitivization" mindset, unless of course they decide the Free Worlds League in general is doing too well and decide to just screw it over however they can.

I'd hedge my bets with sheltering in place. We're sitting on a well-defended and fortified position and even though it is a potential target might offer more protection/safety then whatever civilian housing or public shelter we can send our people out too.
