Wait, I'm confused. How is there a civil war if the planet that got blown up was a prison colony???

I'll admit I'm honestly lost on what the Hell's going on half the time (NO idea what Homeworld is), so I probably just missed a detail or somethin.
In the game, you hear about how the Taidani emperor broadcasted the destruction of Kharak on live (or just a recording) TV across the galaxy. Randomly committing genocide out of nowhere due to a treaty from thousands of years ago understandably kinda made a lot of people mad in addition to existing grievances and ignited a civil war between Republican Rebels and Imperial Loyalists with the Kushan/Hiigarans bumbling their way in the middle of it

Okay! Yeah, my bad, I thought the genocide was gonna be a state secret "sweep under the rug" thing, so the whole broadcast kinda threw me for a loop. Thanks for clearing that up, that makes so much more sense than what I thought was happening!

I wonder when the Imperials will realize they lost Ajora.

After all, there was no record nor reason for her to be onboard the captured frigate, and there's so much chaos after a battle...

CHAPTER THREE: The Great Wastelands (0.1)
Ajora slept, face first in a pillow, and squirmed. She tried to cling to her dream - and then the dream became one of fire. Fire leaping along bulkheads and curling along paint, blooming as the agrav fields cut out, fire becoming rosepetals expanding in microgravity, her feet kicking useless at air as it got hotter and more choked, and the fire swept across sand and turned it into glass and-

Her nose flared and she jerked her head up. The scent in her nose was fire, burning, smoke. She jerked her head around, wildly.

The scent was coming from the small shrine. It wasn't much smoke. It just didn't take much to set Ajora off in this mood. Her roommate, Trajtaa, was kneeling before the shrine, the small burnt offering rising up. Her eyes were closed and she was whispering, softly - under her breath. Ajora watched, frozen in place. Her whole body felt like she was tensed up and ready to spring - but where? She didn't want to interrupt what was...clearly personal. What was deeply important.

She really hadn't...expected Trajtaa to have any kind of religious ...anything. She had seemed painfully focused on the practical, real world. And yet, here she was, head bowed, mouth moving in prayer.

Ajora wasn't sure if her still form had betrayed her somehow, or if the change in her breath had been noticed, or if Trajtaa had simply finished her prayer. The girl's eyes opened and she saw Ajora. Then, without seeming the slightest bit embaressed, she smiled and waved at her. "Heya! Just doing a quick prayer." She said, then touched a small knob on her shrine, twisting it and bringing a circular covering over the burning offering, clasping it shut in gleaming metal. The smell of smoke, faint and whisked away by the ventilators, vanished entirely as Trajtaa pointed at the gearing. "I added this! It's not supposed to be on most shrines - but this way, the offer can burn for the required amount of time while still keeping the smoke contained. It's easier on the ventilators."

She stood and stretched. "Anyway, I gotta get to Engineering. We've got ten Blades to put out."

"Blades?" Ajora asked.

"Space fighters!" Trajtaa said, her eyes shining as she clasped her gloved hands to her chest. "Eeee! They have fusion engines and mass drivers and armor plating and cockpits!" She twirled. "I do all the circuitry crosschecks on shfit-2, I love it so much!"

"Well, uh, good!" Ajora said.

"I know, right?" Trajtaa said, backing out of the room. The door shut just as Ajora's brow furrowed.

"Wait, did you have breakfast?"

Trajtaa did not respond. The door was already closed.

Ajora found that her waiting uniform was hanging in her little locker room. She slid it on - and strapped her wrist comp on - and then started as a cool, female voice spoke from the wrist comp. "Lieutenant Ajora, this is Fleet Command. Report to Fighter Ops 2 after breakfast."

Ajora frowned. "Uh. Got it, Fleet Command." Something about the voice had felt...odd. She couldn't place her finger on it. And something about the timing had felt even stranger. SHe'd have expected the message to show up well before or well after she got the wrist comp on, not exactly the moment she had finished strapping it into place.

You're being paranoid, she thought.

Then she lifted her wrist com up and tried to figure out where...breakfast was.

***
Ajora felt the entire mess hall looking at her when she stepped into it. The eyes of most of the people there were hard. Steely. Ajora walked forward past them, feeling every last eye on them, but she kept her head held up, her shoulders squared. She worked her jaw slightly as she felt the tension there getting higher. Harder. More tight.

She stepped into the line and started to hear whispering. The man ahead of her glanced back, jerked as he saw her, then turned his back on her openly. Ajora kept her gaze fixed on nothing in particular, and tried to not hear the muttering voices. Maybe I should have brought my sword, she thought, as she stepped forward and got her tray covered in a...well, she had to admit. Whatever the Kushan technology was, they had put a lot of work in their food synthetics, because the meal laid out before her looked absolutely delicious - if strange to her. There was a dipping sauce, sticks of bread, things that might have been vegetables...

"Ajora!"

She lifted her head, the friendly tone of voice making her heart lift. She saw it was Bow, the boy from before, beaming at her and pointing down at the seat next to him. His friend, Glimtara, glowered at him, but didn't stop Ajora when she slid into the seat across from the two of them. Conversation began to pick up again, then, at fits and spurts. A few people did shoot Glimtara glances.

"Good morning," Ajora said, trying to not slip into formal Imperial dinner diction. She picked up the fork she had been provided and looked covertly at how Bow was eating. She realized the bread was meant to be held directly in the hand. She tried to put the fork down as subtly as she could.

"Brightening to you," Bow said.

"Yeah, brightening..." Glimtara muttered.

"Brightening?" Ajora asked.

"Oh, uh, we live on the polar regions," Bow said, nodding. "Kharak's deserts aren't very hospitable, so, we're kind of used to long days and long nights and-" He noticed the way Glimtara and Ajora had frozen in their chairs. A second later he caught it and managed to control his blanch. His bread trembled in his hand and then he thrust it into the sauce, focusing undue attention on that.

Ajora wanted to find something, anything, to get past this...awkward gaping hole in the conversation.

[X] "So, uh...my roommate is related to the intelligence agent that interviewed me! do they let many family units serve on the ship?"

Ajora gets to learn about the Kiith system, one step closer to TAKING THE RED! Sajuuk cool me I love violence based found family.

[X] "So, uh...my roommate is related to the intelligence agent that interviewed me! do they let many family units serve on the ship?"

I can see this ending VERY badly for our favorite blonde dumbass, and I am here for it!

I have no idea what the Red is, I just know Ajora's gonna say somethin stupid and (potentially) start a fight, which I think would be funny.

"Sooo... There sure are a lot of families on this ship, huh? Is that standard, or....?"
"Our planet got set on fire, our families are either dead or missing, and everyone left is scattered to the Fleet or random passenger vessels... So yes, there are a lot of families here."
"..........this soup is nice....."

one of the most military focused Kith has no children. Instead they recruit adults who for whatever reason leave their original Kith and join them. This is refereed to as Taking the Red.

the Kith was founded when the founder's birth kith just let their enemies get away with murdering a whole bunch of civilians. in grief the founder and his followers ripped their birth Kith's colors from their bodies and declared that they refused to be part of a Kith that would allow such injustice. They donned red clothing, got revenge for the murders and then became the deadliest mercenaries Kharak had ever known.

To add to this: the tearing off of ones old colors is still the initiation ritual for modern Sobani. In Ajora's case, that would likely entail the rending her old uniform / the Taiidani insignia and patches from it. Which would be VERY cool!!!

If Ajora goes for taking the red it should be something built up to or something has to happen that makes her give up on the Taidanni or her own mother does something so horrific Ajora decides that cutting ties is the best course.

... like the part where her mother and the emporer tried to put her in a position to condone instant genocide?

[X] "So, uh...my roommate is related to the intelligence agent that interviewed me! do they let many family units serve on the ship?"
[X] "Should I put something on this empty patch?"
[X] "This food is so good, how do you manage to keep the metallic tang from the synthetizers from it?'

We may not want her to take the Red. she might be more effecive as a rallying figure.
Consider this, the princess who was to serve as the rubber stamp to your planets execution chooses to rectify her previous actions and allegiances by joining the only Kiith that might actually adopt her, and leans more into the warrior part of warrior-princes thing she has going on. Ajora is royalty, but she's also a soldier, and what better symbol is there than a convert to a righteous cause. With the ancient sword of the exiles at her hip and a ship under her feet, she'll bring the red all the way to the throne room and judge her mother, just as she was supposed to judge Kharak.

I say the Sobani are the only Kiith willing to adopt her because Somtaaw hasn't gone sicko mode on a certain beast quite yet, though we'd love catch a strange broadcast, wouldn't we fellas.
