Anyone who even considers themselves someone who enjoyed Umineko should check out Witches and Woodlands and REDACTION of the Golden Witch, two fanprojects that are viewable in full on youtube. Witches and Woodlands are great for the PnPers as well as, to a lesser degree, rookie detectives who cannot into seacats easily while REDACTION is a fucking great fan arc story about Battler reading a fan arc story.
There is also a fan project for Erika titled Untilted Erika Reboot. But who cares about her?
That was ... quite impressive indeed. Very highly recommended. I managed to figure out about half of it before hand, but Battler's final solution was quite elegant indeed.
... I appear to have entirely forgotten where I got my copies. >.< I know that the fan translation by the Witch's Hunt group is basically canon (they get mentioned in EP7-8, in fact!), but I think they require you to track down originals in Japanese.
(Also, set aside awhile to read them. It took me roughly 12 hours an Episode, and I'm a fairly fast reader.)

I've heard that as a pure text file it's 6mb, which is about twice the size of War and Peace. If it was just pure text and I was still at the height of my reading powers I reckon I could get through it a dedicated weekend. I am no longer at the height of my powers
And on a unrelated note: I love the music. The only bad thing is that there are hundreds of files and I don't know which one was playing for which scene.
Until the LP on SomethingAwful catches up that is.
Witch Hunt links to the originals and provides the translations. Also, you might want to use this patch. It applies the voice acting, updated sprites etc from the PS3 port to the PC version, which is nice.
Unless it's out of print I imagine I would be able to find copies of the originals.

I like to think I'm a pretty fast reader (people regularly go "wtf" at my reading speed), and it took me a solid nine days of nothing but Umineko to get through it all. It's impressive, to say the least .
How do you kill a witch like Bernkastel/Lambdadelta? You can kill Beatrice by finding her truth, and proving that there was no need for a witch on Rokkenjima - but what about Bernkastel, who doesn't really have a mystery? She's just the cast-off Rikas of the loops, she's already unnecessary. (Or is that just it, and the fact that nobody has found her fragment and trivially killed her just a miracle? )
Resurrecting this old thread to introduce SV to a little something called Umineko Online. It bills itself as a mixed roleplaying/OOC/mystery solving IRC chat channel, but in concept it reminds me rather a lot of an old-style MUD. I honestly have no idea if the community's interesting or if it's any fun to play with, but it was interesting enough for me to start downloading their client (it's rather large, presumably because of included game assets), so I thought I'd share.
Relevant people not already in this thread include, in particular, @Higure.
For those interested in playing a sociopathic detective in a highschool setting (or a sociopathic witch lost in a sea of fake worlds), the Erika Project has released its first build a few days ago.
So far I'm enjoying the enigmas and musical references, and hope this project will be finished like the Redacted Redaction was.

I remenver higurashi no naku koro ni i enyoyed very much the firts half of the first season the second half it was only moderate and the second season i disliked it it was just not good especialy the time travel angle they has going on.
So this thread has been dead for several months, but since there seems to be no other source for information regarding the newest arc for Higurashi (Kamikashimashi-hen), I feel I should post this here. If you want to wait until the steam re-release gets to translating this arc, then don't read this. Spoilers ahead.
I apologize if the following lore-dump is unclear, and while I'm 80% sure I got this all right, I might have missed a few subtleties or nuances. This not only spoils lore, but spoils some characters and their motivations as well.
Alright, so from what we can guess, all Class C brain parasites (see Higurashi Outbreak) are in reality, the same kind of being as Hanyu--godlike beings that express themselves, at least typically, through the presence of an extraterrestrial brain parasite.
So, Rena was partially right in the ALIENS thing. Who knew?
In any case, we now have two new Gods--Tamurahime-no-Mikoto and Une/Sai.
From their perspectives, it seems as though the Earth, or rather, sapient civilizations themselves, are flower beds. They are a place for them to grow, sustain themselves, and live, and as two Class C parasites can't live peacefully in the same body, there is naturally competition. To further the flower bed metaphor, what determines which parasite comes out on top is the strength of the roots of the God in question. The strength of the roots don't seem to have anything to do with age or how widespread your parasite is, as Tamurahime is explicitly weaker than both Une and Hanyu.
However, widespread-edness of a given God's parasite does definitely appear to matter in some way, as Tamurahime is able to give Takano superhuman strength and abilities, not even flinching when being hit with a high-power taser, and implied to be able to live through being shot with a sub-machine gun with no problems, whereas Hanyu demonstrably cannot do that.
If two beings with the same "root strength" come into conflict, then the brain parasite that had already taken root inside a person is the one that will emerge victorious.
Also, for those people who are wondering how Witches fit into this, Rika Furude is repeatedly referred to as the one-hundred year witch throughout the scenario (albeit exclusively within a space that's "higher" than the normal universe1), and is almost incapacitated multiple times offhandedly by Tamurahime. That is the grand total amount of stuff related to Witches in this.
Regarding character-lore, we have:
Greedily guards her land; has rather weak roots, and covers the parts of Japan not occupied by Hanyu.
A brain parasite that has an ability to eat its hosts from the inside. Turns out, though, that the only reason she wound up doing it was to spite Tamurahime, who basically said "Get out of this apartment building, it all belongs to me!" just like she did to Hanyu. She is equally matched in "root strength" with Hanyu.
You already know this person, I shouldn't need to put anything here, other than that her parasite is more accustomed to violence than others, thus causing Hinamizawa Syndrome. However, again, things are and have been being done to deal with the problems caused by that.
Footnotes: 1It's a space where Gods can communicate their feelings, experiences, and memories to each other, and only Tamurahime, Une, Hanyu, and Rika appear in it. Also, they can communicate in it even when great distances apart in the physical world, and the backdrop is of spacelike scenery. If that doesn't scream "higher plane", I don't know what does.
Edit: So upon looking into things further (as in, much further--I had to go looking around for a while, and got this information from someone on tumblr who appears to live in Japan) I have discovered that not all aspects of this may be canon, like the one route added in some version of Higurashi that shows Hanyuu's story (yeah, that isn't entirely canon)), but it does contain aspects of the truth. Apparently this was revealed in some interview which I cannot pinpoint the origin of, but I felt compelled to go back and edit this in light of this new information (which, tbh, might not be entirely accurate either, though it does line up with other things).
Hmmm... Does anyone know where I could find a text-based Let's Play of Umineko? I'd like to search the text for an event but I don't want to replay all of Umineko, as fun as that would be .
