Mid-Late 2016: Investigating New Genres New
[X] Plan: Into the Looking Glass
- [X] Mechanics: A pure beat-'em-up game is going to need some work to get it feeling right. (0.5 Time automatically allocated; automatic bonus of +10 due to pitch)
-- [X] 2.0
- [X] Story: The writers will need to figure out exactly how they're going to establish Surge and Amy as a couple, along with everything else.
-- [X] 2.0
- [X] Visuals: A surreal world inspired by Alice in Wonderland needs some top-notch art to sell the effect. (0.5 Time automatically allocated; automatic bonus of +10 due to pitch)
-- [X] 2.0
- [X] Employee salaries: This doesn't change much. (2 Budget automatically allocated, with +3 bonus for every 1 additional Budget, up to a maximum of +15)
-- [X] 5 Budget
- [X] Hire some consultants: It might help to see what actual women in relationships with other women think would make the planned couple work well. (Bonus of +5 to Story for every 2 Budget allocated)
-- [X] 6 Budget
- [X] Get research material: Looking at other media inspired by Alice in Wonderland could give the artists some ideas for what to do... or not to do. (Bonus of +5 to Visuals for every 2 Budget allocated)
-- [X] 4 Budget
- [X] Prepare a marketing campaign: Management does want you to get the public ready for this game. (Bonus of +4 to profit and reception for every 2 Budget allocated)
-- [X] 6 Budget
- [X] (OOC: I think my Trailer already has helped a bit) This game needs to be treated right, because even if the ship is popular, doing it wrong can make the suffer in the aftermath. The story will need to be shifted a bit to accomodate the new goals. Firstly, we can have the opening cutscene before entering Wonderland proper, show Amy and Surge interacting in a more friendly way. You can have one of the Books Amy has in her picnic have symbols that represent Female pairings in modern media like Lillies, or have a romance novel about finding love. This will indicate tothe player that Amy is thinking about romance recently. next we can show her becoming more peppy once Surge arrives to the picnic (by coincidence or by invitation) with Surge becoming happier as well, perhaps with her mentioning that a job she did was more of a pain than normal, and that seeing Amy has lighted up her day. You can even have Cream and Cheese look at each other and nod, in essence, telling that Cream can already tell the two like each other in that way (even if they don't realize it. Kids can be perceptive). As tghe game progresses we get other examples of Female Pairings (Obvious or subtle. Which ever is more appropriate). Like The Jewel, Tangle and Whisper Expies being way more than just Worker and Employers. Additionally, in one of the cutscenes you get for obtaining Alice's possessions you can demonstrate that Alice and Cordelia were a very potent pair that worked really well with each other, supporting each other in many things. (Maybe an additional scene of them holding hands?). Dialogue during the final Boss Fight can be more on the nose, with things like Alice and Cordelia worrying for each other and promising to have each others back always. The final Scene can be of Amy reminiscing about her history with Surge and her asking her if she wanted to go out on a date once they were back in the real world, with surge agreeing. Finally, an after Credits scene in a Storybook format of Amy and Surge dressed in pretty dresses while talking and eating at a Cafe can finalize the ship.
- [X] Considering that we now have The Sonic Dream Collection, Sonic team can have some bonuses to the chao Garden based on having Game Data from specific games in the Dream Collection. Chaos Rising and Ark Crisis specifically. Considering those games also have Chao Gardens You could have a feature that lets you transfer Chao in between the Games. Letting you get special Chao in Wonderland or Using Unique animals in Wonderland to enhance the Chao you have in Chaos Rising and Ark Crisis.

Mechanics: 75 + 63 = 138 Extremely Critical Success
Story: 90 + 76 = 166 Impossibly Critical Success
Visuals: 55 + 88 = 143 Extremely Critical Success

It seems Sonic Team is full of yuri fans, and getting to make a game where two popular female characters into an official couple has given them motivation like you rarely see. Though the enthusiasm from the story consultants you hired probably helped too. Once Yoko recovered from that one woman flirting with her, at least. The important thing, as far as management is concerned, is that Rose And Sparks is set to be another hit. The gameplay, script, and art are already in excellent shape, and you certainly have enough time to get the soundtrack and code up to standard. And maybe make sure Yoko doesn't fall to pieces if she starts getting fan mail from sapphic gamers for writing their new favorite game. Hopefully she can keep it together now that she's gotten some experience.

Result: Rose And Sparks is coming together well! The gameplay and art are both excellent, and asking for real-life lesbians (and bi women) to consult on the script to make the main relationship feel believable has paid off in spades. Due to the high quality of some very important parts of the game, profit cannot go below 65, and reception cannot go below 70. Iizuka begins to worry for Mistuki Yoko after seeing her flounder when another woman flirted with her.

You'll just have to hope the grown woman can handle herself while she works out her sexuality. You have work to do. Management felt they were being generous with Roses And Sparks, and you've got to repay that generosity by making sure Neon Nights does well.

Time Allocation
Allocate Time in increments of 0.5 for a total of 7
No single roll may have more than 2.5 Time allocated to it in total

[] Functionality: Open-world games like this are known for being hard to get working properly. (Automatic bonus of +25 due to being made on Horizon)
- [] How much Time?

[X] Mechanics: Getting the investigation systems right might be tricky (0.5 Time automatically allocated)
- [] How much additional Time?

[X] Story: This is the first game properly featuring the Chaotix in a while, and the story's fairly involved, this could take some doing. (0.5 Time automatically allocated; automatic bonus of +10 due to pitch)
- [] How much additional Time?

[] Visuals: The city will need to be visually interesting.
- [] How much Time?

[] Audio: And everything needs to sound good too. (Cannot allocate more than 1.5 Time if Audio trait is used)
- [] How much Time?

Budget Allocation
Allocate Budget in increments of 1 up to a maximum of 24

[] Hire some playtesters: You should make sure that the gameplay is fun. (Bonus of +3 to Mechanics for every 1 Budget allocated)
- [] How much Budget?

[] Research trip: Neon Star City sounds to you like it's inspired by Las Vegas, and that means an excuse for the artists to take a vacation. You'll need to make sure someone responsible goes with them. You don't want to hear about someone losing massive amounts of money in a casino. (Bonus of +3 to Visuals for every 1 Budget allocated)
- [] How much Budget?

[] Prepare a marketing campaign: You're going to have an interesting time selling people on this game. (Bonus of +3 to profit and reception for every 2 Budget allocated)

Are there any pitches you'd like to hand off to a third-party developer?
[] The third parties can work on... (Write in with up to three pitches, subject to GM approval)
[] The third parties can think of their own ideas

Is there any non-game media you'd like to get started on?
[] Maybe we can make... (Write in with one pitch, subject to GM approval)
[] We'll just focus on games for now

GM Note: I remembered that I never actually gave you the option to cast Breezie before now, so I made sure to include it this time. And as always, please vote by plan.

It seems the votes are in, so let's get rolling. Oh, and the story changes give you +3 to Story. Order is Mechanics (+25 * 2.5 = +62.5, round up to +63), Story (+38 * 2.0 = +76), then Visuals (+35 * 2.5 = +87.5, round up to +88). So these rolls should go quite well.

Mechanics: 75 + 63 = 138
Story: 90 + 76 = 166
Visuals: 55 + 88 = 143

So this is the power of yuri...
.....Hot damn. Just.... Hot Damn....

Iizuka begins to worry for Mistuki Yoko after seeing her flounder when another woman flirted with her.

Mitsuki Yoko- I did not flounder!

Haru Tanaka- Oh? So you totally did not have the Human equivalent of a 404 error message when that Woman with Glasses and a pseudo Goth vibe flirted with you?

Mitsuki Yoko- ......SHADDAP!

And maybe make sure Yoko doesn't fall to pieces if she starts getting fan mail from sapphic gamers for writing their new favorite game. Hopefully she can keep it together now that she's gotten some experience.

Ahahahaha! Ahh.... Fair. Fair. Yoko san is going to be so embarresed of this yet be low key flattered?

Hey @Small Nerd do you think a game that has Sonic showing Pheobe different places in the world (because she wants to explore it but isn't sure where to start so she goes to him for help since he is the most knowledgeable) would count as a slow burning romance in the game? Like I'm thinking at the end of the game after he shows her all the places he knows and she smiles as she waves him goodbye that Sonic feels his heart beating fast and thinks

'…am I dying?'

Because he doesn't know Jack about romance.

Asking before I write the plot to get what you and others think.

Besides the ones who say that Sonic shouldn't be in a romance

A draft of a plan!

Honestly, I'm not really a romance writer. It's just not the sort of thing I like to write, so I don't know much about how to do it well. I'll let other, more knowledgeable people take the lead on this discussion.

Oh I get it, I'm the same in that regard which is why I was asking because I wasn't sure if what I would write would count as slow-burning. Honestly, I'm mostly relying on romance I've seen in anime and manga

I was thinking about what a sequel to Concrete Jungle might be like, and for some reason my brain went to the opening of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, how that game starts with the main character losing everything he spent years building and needing to start over. Maybe Empire City gets attacked by some villain and Sticks has to build up... something... to be able to free Empire City from whatever cruel yoke it's been put under? I think there's a way to meaningfully build on Concrete Jungle's open-world setup for a sequel by cribbing a little from Assassin's Creed without going full Ubisoft Checklist, especially since Concrete Jungle already had climbing over buildings as a major traversal mechanic. Climbing as a way to dodge around enemies or get through holes in their security is definitely a bit obvious when thinking about cribbing from Assassin's Creed, but I think it's a fundamentally solid idea, and avoiding it purely to be more original wouldn't be very productive. So then maybe the key is to add on new things to give this game (call it... I dunno, I'm open to suggestions) its own identity. One thing I don't think Assassin's Creed has ever done much is in-depth systems around interacting with enemies. So maybe Sticks 2 puts an emphasis on giving the player lots of interesting ways to fuck with enemies. Something more like, say, Metal Gear Solid V or Breath of the Wild, where half the fun is going "Hey, can I...?" and then finding out that not only is the answer "yes," the game might even have a special outcome to reward your creativity. Maybe lean into Sticks's background as a former bandit and feral child, give her the ability to create Rube Goldberg machines for traps and ambushes out of various objects in the environment, and different kinds of objects work better or worse depending on the kind of enemy you're using it on. And the whole "challenges" thing from Concrete Jungle was me taking inspiration from PS4/5 Spider-Man, so maybe there's other useful ideas in that well.

One way PS4/5 Spider-Man tried to keep things from getting too repetitive was through switching between characters with different gameplay styles. I don't know if there's a way to make the MJ sections be not polarizing, but maybe there's a place in Sticks 2 for a mode that lets players catch their breath. It could be, let's say... Jewel coming by to help out in the obvious humanitarian crisis and needing to navigate her way through precarious situations diplomatically or by using her wings to get to places in unexpected ways, like flying over open water to sneak around a dock. The "diplomatic" part could be something like the conversation gameplay in Deus Ex Human Revolution, where you have to use your read on someone's personality to figure out what sort of approach can get you what you want. Or hell, lean into the Spider-Man thing and have Tangle play like she's Spider-Lemur, using her tail to get up buildings quickly, swing off of buildings to get into hard-to-reach places, or move heavy objects around. Bring Whisper in to complete the Lesbian Triad, she can use her Wisp powers to fight enemies, navigate the environment, solve puzzles, whatever. Regardless, I think the theme of the game mechanics-wise would be staying observant and using what you find to your advantage.

I don't have many ideas for the story just yet, but I'd like to get people's opinions on my gameplay ideas and any suggestions for that or the story you all might have.

So it's Sticks launching a one woman Guerrilla war against Empire City's conquerers.

I imagine it being something like homefront the revolution, where she uses crap welded together to fight off the enemies. Use her conspiracy knowledge and techniques to throw pipe bombs, raid against captured landmarks, and start an underground movement.

Upfront combat is ill advised. Hit and run, ambushes, and traps?

Well, badgers fight best when cornered

My brain cells occasionally connect

And regarding the story, I imagine a coup being held by some Benedict Arnold type person, taking over a major city (Empire City) in hopes of daddy Eggman/starline/senpai to notice them, with them at the helm of Empire city.

So there'd be a time limit (story wise, not sure gameplay wise), before the traitors waifu comes by to finally capture the city.

I think there's something with this idea. Though I think the time limit should probably just be in the story rather than the gameplay since open-world games are meant to be time sinks. You don't want players to rush.
