Hero of an Era Quest: A Superhero Quest

Prologue - Finishing Matters at the Station
[X] Address to Madam Cobra
-[X] "As I was saying, I came here chasing a being of a race called Drajophus. One that came here to enslave the human race."
[X] Address the man with the coat. (Vertigo)
-[X] "Why bother sending someone to question me if you were planning to drop in before we'd finished introductions? It seems like a waste of time, is this a common human custom?"

You immediately look at the man with the leather jacket while frowning internally. Did he send his Madam Cobra for nothing if he was just going to come here through a portal? If he think they can waste time like this in such a serious situation, he is sorely mistaken.

"A quick question to you mister," you ask the man as you make sure that the man realizes that you're talking to him, to which he quickly looks at you with interest. "Why bother sending someone to question me if you were planning to drop in before we'd finished introduction? It seems like a waste of time, is this a common human custom?" you finish asking him your questions as you talk to him with a dismissive tone.

You see both Madam Cobra and the man with the wolf by his side frowning at your dismissive questions of their leader, which you could partially understand. They were all a part of a single group and loyalty is a part of any group. However, you raised up an excellent point, why are they upset with that.

The tall man starts walking towards you as the large, black wolf besides him growls. "You dare question Vertigo, the human who was blessed the most by The Powers That Be?" he asks as irritation flows through his low-pitched voice. As he is about to pass the head of his order, the second man, Vertigo, raises his hand and glares at the man.

"Black Howler, stand down. Do not become complacent enough to fall to mediocre insults. This attitude is beneath you, for we all have ascended beyond the weaknesses of the human spirit. We do not feel anger, love, lust nor greed or wroth. We have seen what is beyond virtue and sin. Remember that." Vertigo says with a calm and collected voice as he glares at his friend.

Is that human truely believes he is above the biological and spiritual functions of a sentient being? There was no man who was blessed by The Powers That Be in such regards, not even among the favorite humans. Not Solomon with his wisdom, not Samson with his strength, and not even the prophets or the Nephelim of Nazareth. Yet this person is more blessed than all of them? You highly doubt it.

Vertigo then looks at you with a calm demeanor on his face as he glows with a black aura, to which the two birds on his chest suddenly sprout out from his body. They were both at the size of an American Eagle, had beaks that were seperated into four parts and they were black in color with some dark-purple feathers and red eyes. One had a purple, flaming crest on top of his head, while the other had a very long and thin flaming, purple tail.

The birds landed each on one of the man's arms, looking straight into your soul with their bright, blood-red eyes. There was no doubt about it, they were Shadowlings, birds who manipulated darkness energy as projectile or shaping their bodies with it, who hail from a dimension known as Vircifian Void. There was several seconds of silence, only for about 7 seconds after being summoned, the Shadowling with the long tail started to laugh out loud with an hysterical laugh, which confused everyone in the room, including his summoner and the other Shadowling.

"HAHAHAHA!!!" The avian creature continued laughing and laughing on and on for a while, until he finally started to slow down as he seemed in pain from laughing so much. Was there something funny you weren't aware of?

"Oh man," the long-tailed creature started to talk as he still chuckled while looking at you. "I can't believe you called out his bullshit! I like you already." he tell you as he started flapping his wings and fly towards you. "And I usually really hate your kind, with all the 'Rawr, I'mma destroy everything and shit, rawr.'" he tells you as you're not really sure of what to make of the bird.

Vertigo quickly clears out his throat, making you return your focus and sight on him rather than his bird. "I was mistaken to believe that by now Madam Cobra would have finished introductions and gaining your reason for coming here. I intended to arrive just when you were ready to confirm that our alliance would be set in stone as I believed it to be." he tells you as he opens his palm, to which the black book that Madam Cobra held in her hand before suddenly appeared in his hand as he opened it. "In darkness, one gains true patience, for in the light thou art stuck in the complacency of petulance, breeding impatience and distrust in time itself, taking it for granted." he says before closing the book, which then disappears before your eyes in a poof of smoke. "So it is written." he says with a condescending tone to his voice.

The Shadowling with the long, thin, flaming purple tail immediately interjected. "What Goth William Blake wannabe here means is basically a farcical and smart sounding way of saying: "No, YOU are wasting time!" like some little brat with no real riposte." the creature insults his master as he explains the true meaning to what Vertigo just told you with a snarky comment. You already understood that the man was just insulting you, saying he knew what "true patience" is. You really don't like this guy already. You see him scowl at his bird harshly.

Suddenly the second Shadowling started flapping its wings and fly up. "Vanphilius, brother, why must thou insult our master to such degree?" he asks as he flies besides his brother.

"Because our master is so goddamn smug that's it's fun to hear him getting knocked down a peg, Vesilius." Vanphilius says with a satisfied tone to his voice.

You decide to ignore the arguement that was now starting between the Shadowling siblings as you look at Madam Cobra, who had all of her snake familiars crawl back slowly on her skin, returning to their state as tattoos. She was also frowning at you.

"As I was about to say," you adress her and make sure the other two humans know who you were speaking to now. "I came here chasing a being of a race called Drajophus. One that came here to enslave the human race." you tell her with a concerned and very serious tone to your voice, which comes out metallic and echoing through your shell.

After telling them what you came to this dimension for, there is a silence between everyone. Even the two summoned Shadowling siblings who were arguing together just stopped their arguement and looked at you. The humans kept on a stoic and emotionless expressions on their faces, so they either never heard of a Drajophus before and were just interested, or they were scared and tried their best to hide it.

"Woah woah woah woah woah." the Shadowling Vanphilius said with fear quite clearly echoing in his voice. He definitely knows what a Drajophus is and he seems scared. At least someone is showing an understanding of what the situation is. "You want to chase down a Drajophus? Are you nuts?! Those things originated from Hell itself!" he shouts with a terrified tone to his voice while rapidly flapping his wings in a fright and mania.

The other Shadowling, Vesilius, starts chuckling. "Finally, a worthy foe for a mighty warrior as I to do battle with!" he says with excitement as he starts flapping his wings in a quicker pace as well.

The Shadowling with the flaming purple tail then lands on the table and stops flapping his wings as only a few seconds later his brother lands beside him. "Sure, go for it...if you want to become a Kentucky Fried Chicken." he snarks as he turns towards his summoner. "Vertigo please, don't say yes to this. You will die! Trust me on th-" he starts begging to his master, who just raises his hand above his head, snaps his fingers and the Shadowlings immediately disappear. Both of them, retuning as tattoos on his chest.

The three humans return to focus on their conversation with you. The man with the leather jacket looks at the woman beside him and nods to her, to which she nods back. The man with the long bang then nods at the tall man, who also nods back before looking at his wolf, who howls loudly, oppening a portal.

Madam Cobra looks at you with her stoic expression. "Seems like continuing this discussion is useless. If we are dealing with a demon, then we must wait for The Darkness to guide our actions through Vertigo. There is no point of staying here. You are welcomed to our base." she tells you as she and her leader get up from their chairs and walk towards the portal. Perhaps you could follow them and see how they intend to handle all the information.

Can they track down the Drajophus with a certain type of magic? Do they know its weaknesses? Do they have a plan? Well, nothing else to do but to find out. You get up and join the group as you enter the portal.

Throughout your journey in the black-purple tunnel of a portal, you constantly hear the howling sound of the wolf who summoned it. No doubt it was also a being from the Vircifian Void, all of the familiars are probably from there. It makes you wonder of what they are capable of in a fight, especially against a being as strong as a Drajophus.

When you exit the portal, you find yourself in a place filled with shelves that had many, many books in them. The place was dimly lit, filled with flickering candles that were burning with bright purple fire, giving a purple hue light to the darkness around.

The three humans look at you as the portal behind you closes. "Welcom... to Darkness' temple of knowledge." Vertigo says as he walks towards a couch and immeditely lies down. "This library holds knowledge of the occult. You may or may not find something about the demon you're chasing. Whether you find information that will lead us to him or not in irrelevant. Eventually Darkness will send us its direction. All you need is wait." he tells you as he closes his eyes.

Wait? Wait! This Vertigo thinks that the best way of finding the monster is just to wait until something happens and hope to get there before it disappears?! No, you didn't come to the human world with the intentions of stopping this Drajophus and then just wait for him to achieve his goals. Then again, you could spend some time knowing your new allies and what they are capable of. Or just get to know them better as people, to satisfy you curiosity of the human nature,

(Pick 2):
[] Speak with Vertigo.
-[] Ask about the structure of the order and its members' strengths and weaknesses.
-[] Ask him about what the Order of the Black Book actually does. What kind of oppositions of the magical world do they face?
-[] Ask him a personal question (Write-In).
[] Find a book to read. Perhaps you would find information on Drajophuses that include more details about their weaknesses besides what you already know.
[] You know Drajophus are weak to Holy Magic. Perhaps you should try to find a Holy Magic Grimoire?
[] Talk to Madam Cobra.
-[] Ask about her familiars and their abilities.
-[] Ask her a personal question (Write-In).
[] Talk to Black Howler.
-[] Ask about his familiar and its abilities.
-[] Ask him a personal question (Write-In).
[] Try to use your Precognition power to look where the Drajophus would be in the near future.

---***---

Okay, this one was pretty long, I have to admit. A small note is that Jesus isn't the son of God, but the son of an Angel who is an equivilant of a lesser god in this universe. If you take DC/Vertigo comics for example, you could say an Archangel is like a lesser god watching over Earth instead of God himself. So Jesus is more like Elain Belloc before becoming The Presence.

Prologue - Learning Weaknesses
[X] Find a book to read. Perhaps you would find information on Drajophuses that include more details about their weaknesses besides what you already know.
[X] You know Drajophus are weak to Holy Magic. Perhaps you should try to find a Holy Magic Grimoire?

Tick-Tock Attempts to find a Holy Grimoire in the library, making an Awareness test. Test Difficulty: 4.
Test Without Modifiers: 6-4.

2d6-3 Modifier: (-3)
Final Outcome: (6-3)-4=(-1) Failure.

You decide after a dew minutes upon what you're going to do: look throughout the library for whatever can assist you to defeat the Drajophus. This means you're going to rely a lot on reading in the next few hours or even the next few days in order to find everything you need to know about its race. You decide to look around, taking out books from their shelves and you start reading every book in which you can find any title referring to a Drajophusian.

And so hours upon hours pass, or so you think. To you time never matters and sensing how much time passes in a place that is so darkened to the point that you can't see the sun entering and passing so you wouldn't be able to know how much time has truly passed. Though you can probably guess that you have been in the human dimension for over a day now.

After all this time though, you have a large amount of into on the race after all of your research. Enough to satisfy you. First fact that was interesting for you to learn was that their lungs were immune to the effects of Carbon Dioxide, which made sense since they created fire a lot of the time, so it would make sense that they could sustain themselves in that kind of environment.

You also learn that while they have exoskeletons, that line of defense isn't as invulnerable as you thought hours prior. From a whole lot of reading you learn that if they are hit hard enough, then their exoskeleton breaks and they are left with no physical defense what so ever. However, they do manage to regrow those hollow, defensive plating across their bodies after several days.

Now in terms of weaknesses, you know that like any demon, they are weak against holy magic, but just flailing religious symbols in front of them does nothing, so if you are to buy a cross or anything of that kind, you should find a Grimoire of Holy Magic and learn some of its spells to enhances the holy items.

You learn that like the vampires who live in this dimension, a Drajphus has a weakness to a certain type of metal: silver. If Stabbed through the heart by something made of silver, the Drajophus dies almost immediately, just like vampires. The problem would be to find a weapon made of silver.

Information that you also learn is that the monster tends to start a fight by relying on his great strength and attack at melee first with its claws, only to start throwing fireballs and fire breaths from the air when it realizes that he isn't having an easy fight. The best this situation is to constantly attack when he does and try to prevent him from using darkness barriers.

After reading this information, you start looking for a Holy Magic Grimoire, taking out books from book shelves in order to see if you can find something. You take out book after book, read through each and every one, then return it to the shelf. For about a few hours you feel yourself feel exhausted, after all, just because you are made of time doesn't mean you don't need to sleep to regain your energy.

After finishing through the second book shelf, you sit down and lean your back against another shelf and close your eyes. You don't know how much time you're in this state, but when you wake up, you see Madam Cobra standing over you, inspecting you with interest.

You raise your head, to which she doesn't show any emotion. "You seemed like you were a lifeless armor on the ground. It was quite interesting and insightful to watch you sleep, for I didn't know your kind needs sleep." she tells you as she starts walking away. "I shall go and meditate to become one with the shadows of my heart, and snuff any trace of emotion within me." she tells you as you hear her steps echoing on the ground.

"Wait." you tell her, to which she immediately stops. "Do you have any Holy Magic Grimoire in this library?" you ask her with a voice echoing through your metallic shell.

The Goth woman turns to you and shake her head. "We worship the darkness in this place. The light only brings out the worst of man and woman. So does Vertigo says, and he spreads the word of the Darkness of the Black Book and its world. Therefore, we do not own the Grimoire you're looking for." she tells you as she walks away.

What do you do now? (Pick 2):
[] Speak with Vertigo.
-[] Ask about the structure of the order and its members' strengths and weaknesses.
-[] Ask him about what the Order of the Black Book actually does. What kind of oppositions of the magical world do they face?
-[] Ask him a personal question (Write-In).

Prologue - Making Plans
[X] Let him talk first and hear out his ideas on how to take down the Drajophus. If you don't like his plan, press harder and be more adamant yourself with your requests.

You look at him with an inner scowl. How arrogant is he to believe he can claim that his plans never fail. You are by far more intelligent than he is and while neither of you ever fought a Drajophus, you're still the one who spent hours reading on them.

You eventually decide to let him just explain what his "plan that won't fail" is and then decide if you like it or make a much more efficient plan. Was such arrogance something a lot of humnas, or even Superheroes share among them? "Very well, go ahead. What's your plan?" you ask him with a slightly annoyed tone to your voice.

The shirtless man then nods. "Thank you for accepting patience over hot-headed idiocy. It is appreciated." he thanks you in the most condescending manner, which internally pisses you off. You may be fine with the stoic behavior of Madam Cobra, but this human is just aggravating. "Now, as you noticed in the police station, Black Howler is a teleporter. I also noticed from footage from the burning building incident that day that you're a teleporter as well." he starts to explain the simple facts while you cross your hands in front of your chest and listen.

"Now, when the darkness would tell us where this Drajophus is, we would teleport to his area using the portal opening ability of Malkior, Black Howler's familiar. Afterwards, you would teleport behind the beast with a pair of steel rods in your arms and use them to pierce its legs and hinder its movements. When that step is finished, we the members of the Order of the Black Book shall attack it constantly with our familiars, weakening it. At the end, I shall pierce its head with the Black Sword of Faurviam." he explained his entire plan in a very summarized and short description of what exactly he is planning.

"Do you like this plan? I believe that we could both agree that this is the best possible plan there is for the situation at hand." he asks for your opinion, even if he probably

[] Yes, while short in details, not very complex and vastly underestimating the raw strength and power of the Drajophus, most of the the basic ideas that he brought up are actually good: imparing and hindering mobility, hitting it with everything and quickly impaling it throught the head are perfectly fine ideas.
-[] Write-In additional steps that could ensure victory against the Drajophus.
[] Hell no! It's a stupid idea and completely neglects several aspects of the Drajophus such as flight and its ranged capabilities. This human is just going to shorten his lifespan if he goes with this plan against a stronger foe.
-[] Write-In an alternate plan that you think is better to take the Drajophus down.

After telling him you opinion, he simply nods while crossing his fingers and putting his hands in that way on the table, keeping a focused and listening expression on his face. you see that he is at least listening to your opinions on the matter, so he either has some level of respect to your skills, or he just wants to pretend you have a say in things before shutting down your ideas.

He raises his hand after you finish telling him all of your ideas. "Thank you for your implementation, I have never met another person who was above mediocrity that was not blessed by Darkness like myself or my order." he compliments you and you finally seem to actually get through his self-absorbed ego, and he might not be so bad after all.

"However," he continues as you are not completely surprised as the word comes out of his mouth. "Your plans, while beyond of a human's complacency in average mediocrity, your plans are still imperfect because they have a chance to fail. With my plan, Darkness has blessed my mind and has given me protection from realms beyond, therefore there is no chance of failure if we follow my plans to the smallest detail." he tells you with the most serious tone to his voice that you've heard so far from all the short and few times he had talked to you.

Yep, he is too arrogant for his own good. You shake your head before looking at him. "Can you at least answer my questions from earlier? If I were to cooperate with your plan, I need to know the strengths and weaknesses of your order, as well as its structure." you inquire of him as you adamantly push your requests from earlier in the conversations.

Now it is Vertigo who sighs in defeat. "Very well." he tells you as he moves his right hand under the desk and you hear a "click!" sound, only yo see the desk itself opening up, revealing a box with three weapons: a cane, a sword and a dagger. The metal blades of the sword and dagger were both pitch black, while their handle were gold and sturdy. The cane itself had a silver colored handle and itself was entirely black in color, while it's edge was sharp like a rapier.

"These are our order's sacred weapons: The Black Sword of Faurviam, the Dagger of Etenral Darkness and the The Staff of Almanour." he says as he looks at the three weapons. "All made of silver with the intent to kill monsters. All made from a uniqe kind of silver ore from the Vircifian Void." he tells you as another "Click!" sound is heard and the box is lowered down before the desk closes.

"May I take one of the three?" you ask him with a calm, patient and collected manner.

The human looks at you with a slight bit of anger in his eyes. "Do not even think about it. Only those whom were chosen as champions of the darkness are allowed to touch these, meaning that they are mine to use and mine alone. Darkness shall punish those taited by the light who dare to touch these artifacts." he explains to you as he puts both legs on his now closed desk.

Great. Just great. So there are no Holy Magic Grimoire in this place and Vertigo claims only he can use the silver weapons. This is not going to be an easy fight against the demonic being, and you know it. All of this just complicates things.

"Can I at least hear more about your organization?" you ask him as you now get more and more aggitated with the human.

He nods at you. "Yes. In terms of leadership, the final word in desicions belongs to me and I command them by sending them to investigate events that the Darkness alerts me of and decide on battle strategies during battle. Other than that, we are all considered equals." he tells you simply about the hierarchy of the Order of the Black Book. "Now, for the members of the organization, including myself..."

*Okay, sometimes Connections can be considered a Challenge, as it can hinder them. In the case of Dark Kraken and Great Black, they need to keep their relationship a secret, as members of the Order of the Black Book are supposed to be "above human weaknesses such as carnal desires, love and other sins and virtues". So in short their relationship would be frowned upon by the other memebers of the order.
