Lucifina (aka you, aka Lu, aka Lucy, aka Sparkling, aka Gosling)

Race: the new nameless humanoid species
Gender: Female
Age: biological - around 21 in human years; actual(?) - almost half a year (?).
Background: protege of a natural science scholar, unknown origins
Status: Healthy

Perk(s):
"Follow the white cat" - you have a moody guiding spirit at your side who can boost your spirit aspect advancement should you get on its better side (+1 spirit arcane charge point after passing hard charisma attribute check (18)), expect its occasional interference.

"No one is an island" - you get 1 + n bonus to all social influence skills and CHA rolls when applied to teammates, where n is the number of steps of the target's affection tier beyond neutral (applies to both positive and negative affection dimensions). Additionally, get +3 to the mentioned bonuses if Amalia is around and can provide quick advice. Passive effect: unearth more insights on followers.

"It's in my blood" - you get a permanent +1 bonus to Intelligence and +1 to arcane skill. Actions that train arcane aspects have a 1/6 chance to double the yields unless the base earning equals or exceeds one full level. You are more prone to magic-related actions and thoughts. You might find it harder to resist the allure of magic in some situations.

Okay, 'tis time for me to start drafting and writing the next update while you can state your codex preferences in the meanwhile (you do remember about the post below the characters sheets, right?).

Oh, and tomorrow this thread will have its first anniversary. So, having an appropriate opportunity, I'd like to thank all of my amazing readers who survived through my un-proofreaded and pretty much horrendous writing. You're angels :3

*sigh*
That feeling when you recall the quests of others which you followed over a year and realize that they all died.
Anyway, have some nice music

PS: yes, this is my long-winded way of saying that i'm writing

2.12 The first part of the fourth week or "work it 'till it hurts"
"I... I don't want to drag you down in the town; not when you have things to do and I promised someone to spend time" your reply generated quickly, with almost no hesitation, causing Rosaline to curve lips and raise an eyebrow.

"Oh? And, if only it is not a secret, who would that be?" she asked with a faint tint of teasing.

"That be Ulren. He helped me before the holiday for a promise to get by and let him teach how to defend" was your nonchalant answer, which wiped out Rosaline's perceived excitement. For a second, she looked like someone who is about to say something, but at the final moment, she shrugged off that itchy urge of hers to let words loose, wishing you godspeed and goodnight, and receiving your thanks for the clothes she ordered for you.

At that, your focus and motivation for indulging mentally or physically-demanding activities was depleted for a time being, leaving you to the choice of leisure for the evening. After swiftly recognizing the layout of available opportunities, you spend time

[] reading the folklore.

You were imagining the allegedly mischievous gobarts (or gobs in short) - the capricious spirits of items and places. You touched upon the ancient post-Pherinian legends, featuring a lyrical one about the maiden's tear - the crystal-like luck charm that was supposedly given to a warrior by his maiden before he took off onto the raid. At the end of that legend, the charm shattered after dispensing its power and curing the man of the otherwise lethal arrow wound, allowing the warrior to return alive and find out that his dame mysteriously became a cold, loveless person, whose inner warmth was the source of the trinket's power. The last legend was the one about a former Lyf knight-errant, who received a vision from Borea - the ancient goddess of winds and fates - and embarked on a long journey to the northern peak of Yrsengard - the presumed domain of the goddess and simultaneously the cradle of humanity.

[] reading the bundle of the old and new newspapers alike, which Rosaline piled up under the tea table in the salon hall.

A dry read that might be, but your mind raced across the events that took place in Kirhol, granting you with sober information of the pressing matters such as the fear of the Olfadir activity, the refugee crisis, the fear of the trade decline that was caused by the agony of the Lasir kingdom - the old trading partner of the Lyf, and thus, the predicted decrease of the living standards. And if that wasn't enough, there were entire columns dedicated to the squabbles of the nobles, sometimes even featuring salacious scandals. An odd read for entertainment purposes, but you can't say that it was boring to consume this information either.

[] picking up on that 'Carmine Sails' book that made your patron blush and finding out the strange secrets concealed within it.

Your face became a concert of flowy emotions as you hid in the corner of the library and began to drift through the text. As you found out, it was an assortment of short stories rather than a single big one. While you were finding out what tied them together thematically, the shape and angles of your brows telegraphed your inner voice to the outside: neutrally-horizontal - now that a pretty scene, the arches slightly lifted - they both seem so nice, both brow heads lifted while edges lowered - aw... they are too sweet. Why would others plot against them?, both arches raised in relief - phew, they got through it, the left brow lowered and the right one lifted - just why... would he do that to her socks? And why is she acting so strange?, both brows motionless and highly raised as your head shakes slightly in incomprehension - they wha-a-a...?, both eyes opened wide in shock while you toss the book away and wildly flail one's hands as if they were dirt-splattered - ew! Eww! EWWW!!!

[] with a group of maidservants at the salon, listening to the head cook Gustoff play on accordion and spin stories from his seafaring youth.

Thankfully, the manor staff grew accustomed to you enough not to give you strange looks and tiptoe away from your proximity. In such a company, you spent over an hour listening to the tales of the exotic Ussar port, about the misty shores of Yrsengard, and some hideous sea creatures that lurk under the sea waves. All stories speckled with brief melody breaks and the transitioning remarks on the outlandish dishes he cooked, tasted, and replicated back in those days.

[] hanging out with Amalia after her shift's end.

You have had a jolly hour full of gossiping about the recent news, fooling around, and learning of how to make one's hair. The time flew by quickly, leaving both of your joyous. Just like in the case of other dwellers, you could not help yourself but notice that her attitude toward you changed somewhat. It was that feeling that now she was treating you like some any other friendly maidservant whom she knew for the entirety of her work in this house. It wasn't too late until you had to part: you with a posh, long braid, and she with those daydreamy eyes, possibly combing the distant horizons.

_________________________

he next day, you woke up earlier than usual: early enough to lie on the bed staring at the ceiling and fill one's head with doubts and uncertainties surrounding the impending self-defense practice. It wasn't secret for you that your combativeness was rather pathetic, but you didn't feel like exposing it to others. Even though you felt like it would be highly unlikely for Ulren to mock you for that, the thought of risking to fail miserably embarrassed you. Still, you made a deep breath in and closed your eyes for a moment; you made your mind yesterday and even told Rosaline about it, so it was too late to turn back.

You crossed your path with her shortly after heaving breakfast, exchanging with fugitive morning greetings - something that hasn't occurred before. After this encounter, you returned to your room to grab the weapon you were gifted with and then proceeded down to the gymnasium. You had some faint hope to find Ulren alone there, but as soon as your senses caught the presence of multiple people, you could only steel yourself in the face of inevitable. After exhaling deeply, you pushed the heavy doors, momentarily stealing the surprised gazes of the rook guardsmen (one of which missed a nasty strike in a spar due to losing focus), Lodric, and your big pseudo-bro.

"I promised to come by earlier, so you teach me how to..." you spoke into the hall that was muted with your arrival, "defend myself," you squeezed unconfidently enough to assume that there was a questioning intonation in the end. A wave of murmurs and hushed grunts washed over the place, but Ulren just nodded at you.

"I was starting to think you won't show up," he said, waving at the rooks to continue with what they were doing and approaching you to set you into the training.

And that he did, although, not in a way your mind painted. It wasn't cuts and thrusts and fancy lunges that you were asked to perform - your training began from being taught how to grip correctly and how to utilize stances. Then, by the time you began to wonder whether or not you'd have to swing the thing today at least once, you were instructed to move around while maintaining the stance that you've learned, which was a tad bit more challenging in the light of your dreary lacking proficiency and utterly nonexistent related habits. And then, after guiding you on how to make two thrusting and slashing swings without ruining the trajectory of the blade, for the first time you used a professional-tier weapon on a practice dummy... which resulted in the former falling out from your hands and loudly clanging against the stone floor. A short silence ensued, followed by a flood of grumbles, giggles, and jests of everyone except Ulren and Lodric. One of the guards even commented: "Chief, don't you think she'd be better off in a kitchen or something?".

Ulren demonstratively cleared his throat before answering, "To your knowledge, I can confirm that she took down two entities: a cadaver walker and a sepulcher ripper, which makes for two more takedowns than you ever did, Torvald". Hearing that, the entire contingent of the guards went mute. "So, how about you jostle to the caboose and fetch me a Turanese shepherd's pie? You might even earn a grateful spank if the ram would be juicy enough".

The first one to break the silence was Lodric: he just stated 'Roasted' and cracked in contagious laughter, which spread across everyone except Torvald himself. Needless to say that you had your previously shambled confidence back, continuing with the practice, which, however, was barely above the level of constant fails. The session was physically straining as your physique could not compensate your inadequacy in melee exploits. But that's the reason why you were doing it in the first place, wasn't it?

After others done with their training rounds and dispersed, you too were depleted for a day. You still were quite far from a remotely sufficient level of proficiency, but at least you've got your first glimpse at the road ahead and the first bite of an actual thing. Hopping at the opportunity to have a chat with Ren, you helped him out to tidy the place after the crowd left.

"Did I do bad?" was your sincere question, "Am I that weak?".

"You did as you did. Training is about improving foremost, not about performing well for the very first time. Can't say that growing up some muscles would've been a bad idea, though, but I picked the weapon for you basing on your current physique with all of its risks and advantages".

"Advantages?" you inquired. It wasn't like you expected any remote praise or anything.

"For one, you do have wings, and I'm almost certain there will be the day when they'll take you up. Also, you are quite endurant for someone with so little meat on one's bones," hearing that, you pouted at him, "you also possess decent control over your body, which also serves as crucial criteria for picking a correct weapon and fighting style". He stroked his stubble before continuing, "with your small body mass and enhanced mobility, your best bid to survive is to avoid being hit in the first place and retaliate via jabs with prolonged weapons. Also, with wings being where they are, the array of possible strike motions you can perform without hurting them is limited to thrusting. Additionally, you can exploit your ability to stay out of reach while using ranged weaponry. I'm not even touching upon your magic skills, with which you can either amplify your advantages or mitigate weaknesses. All facts considered, I'd say that you have the potential to become quite formidable overall, not necessarily in rough strength.

You replied with nothing, just tilted your head and smiled. If anything, he knows how to motivate.

I was torn between making you a classical spadona-type longsword with an extended grip, a partisan short spear, or even a light crossbow. After thinking for a while about a possible scenario when you would have to face hostiles capable of extended or ranged attacks, I figured out that you'd be safer if you move constantly. So, here it is - your very first sword".

"You know so much about fighting and are so good teaching. Did you do it before? Teach, I mean".

"Yes... for a short while. Helped other hapless kinsmen to get a better hold on their new role. Never was that good at it, though".

"But you are good!" you objected, to which he shook his head and grunted.

"Compared to my most combative kinsmen, I'd be lucky to be a quarter as masterful as they are".

Your jaw metaphorically dropped for a moment. Did he say that to jest you of out of some strange humor, did he? You peered at his face again, and his pensive mug with an overdue stubble suggested that it was as far from being humorous as you were from the heights of the conflagration arcane aspect.

"I don't care about your kinsmen! You teach me and others, so you are good!" your defiant reply chiseled a tiny smirk on his face. He said nothing to that, letting the atmosphere sunk down into the depths of awkwardness. To which, however, you had a remedy in mind.

"Ren? Can I ask you something?".

"If you want to practice with a spear, that's easily arrangeable".

"No, I wanted to ask something different. The sword that you gave me - it is named. Why 'Holly'?".

"Bhiroths have a long-running tradition of giving names to the weapons of significance. It stems from the respect we have for the tools that take and preserve lives. For many, their weapons are like friends, and one does not normally call their fiend with nouns. So, it just seemed natural. As for why I called it Holly, it's because I found you in a bush of one. Naming your first real weapon after the "cradle" from which I picked you up seemed appropriate... or did you ask me about this because you didn't like the name?".

"No, it's good," you answered, giving space for an awkward pause, "And thank you".

Your crown was yet again graced with a gentle pat, "You're thanking me too soon, Lucy".

The rest of the day passed by peacefully, with Ulren (probably inspired by the earlier mentioning of having a meat pie) nagged out some juicy baked meat rolled in the crusty dough from Gustoff, which you both enjoyed. Unlike the scenario of the joke your "big bro" made earlier, the cook didn't receive an affectionate spank even though the meat was admittedly succulent. After that, you had plenty of time to recover the strengths and to ponder on that "too soon" line. Was it about you being thankful for the sword, for being picked out from the wilds, or for both? Why it has to be so difficult to read what's on his mind?
________________________

And thus, the day when you were bound to work on one's meats arrived. Unlike yesterday, you were quite calm about the prospect of doing things you never did before. Be it because of the confidence gained yesterday or the knowledge that you will be supported but you did not fret for a single heartbeat. Instead, you were trying to cope with the overwhelming feeling of novelty that was caused by the end of the daily classes with Rosaline. Wondering about how was she doing out there, you descended to the gymnasium early in the morning, finding both Ulren and Lodric there, lifting comically disproportional cast iron weights, just like one would expect from an average human and a compact giant. They both grinned at you welcomingly before you described your desire to, well, to stop being a weakling. Little did you know at that moment what you had called upon oneself.

After having to lift an iron weight (a relatively small one, possibly the second smallest available), your meats felt like on fire. After repeatedly vaulting on a wooden "goat", you began to lose the sense of your limbs. Then, these two sadists had you swinging a heavy iron pole at a hanging wooden dummy wrapped in rags. No wonder that the said pole eventually slipped free from your grip and nearly crash-coursed at Ulren. By the time your brain began to paint dreadful pictures of you falling and dying on the spot, the weight you lifted earlier was shoved into your hands right before you were told to sprint with it for as many circles of the gymnasium hall as you can endure. After one circle and a half, they finally had you spread-eagled on the floor. They loudly discussed your apparent lack of strengths to continue to the final exercise - a set of weight throws in the outdoors-, and a tiny. Hearing that, you could only helplessly convulse.

They were 'thoughtful' enough to carry you to your chambers and to lay you on your bed. Possibly avoiding your dissatisfaction with them, sometime after lunch the boys asked Amalia to fetch you the refreshments and to check up on you, which she obliged. The only two reasons why you haven't showered her with whining were the facts that it was your own decision to exercise and that, by the time she slipped in your room, you began to feel your body again. She was even compassionate enough to bring you a book suiting your arcane arts interest, into which you dug deep until the sleep stuck you spontaneously and without a warning.
________________________

You had your share of post-exertion soreness during your first remembered weeks, but nothing of what you felt before ever came in comparison to the overwhelming sensation that graced you upon awakening the next morning. Almost the entirety of your body felt like it was stuffed overnight - stuffed with salt, and quite the unrefined sort at that. For the very first time in your lifetime, getting up from a bed turned out to be a challenge worthy of a few tries and about ten minutes of short respites in between them. Fortunately, your body proved to be as resilient as others sometimes emphasized. Eventually, you made your shaky way to the kitchen, watching Ulren in his apologetic eyes while stodging an irregularly plentiful breakfast.

Closer to noon, after examining own physical condition, the plan for today was clear: due to your body being in inappropriate condition for extensive wings exercises, it was the right time for some magic practice with Karl. You hoped that your pretension on his time would not come off as arrogant or unappreciative, which, exacerbated by Karl's lack of emotional response to you, began to bother you. There was something slightly odd about the mage: if Ulren is a kind of man who just keeps his thoughts and feelings concealed, projecting them with actions instead, Karl was a dodgy type, not letting anyone past that forcedly-polite facade. Perhaps, this lack of any feedback was irritating, but it wasn't like you had a lot of alternatives.

And the man obliged, looking over your attempts at shaping the light aspect in the ways you haven't before. But even with the supervision, your ongoing session did not go better than the one that preceded it: the best results you mustered was nullifying other aspects not in a radial pattern but in a cone trajectory. Aside from that, along the way of your improvisation spree, for a brief moment, you managed to conjure a luminal barrier in a dome shape, covering more than enough space to shield not only you but whoever would be in your immediate proximity. On the offensive side of your skills, the things remained stale: you were unable to push the wedge of solid light that you conjured, dispelling the incantation into the mass of fading sparks instead of sending it flying at a dummy target. Karl was curious but not particularly impressed by your performance, and so, the time came for him to announce his verdict on the today session.

"First of all, I must admit that your persistence in pursuing arcane mastery is commendable, but before we proceed to the feedback and advice, wouldn't you be mind if I ask you something?"

You shook your head, letting him know that it would not be an issue.

"I'm curious about why do you pursue only one of your gifts. Is it the soul aspect's reputation and implications? Or do you seek higher mastery in thaumaturgy, thus organizing your time accordingly? Perhaps, there are more practical reasons for your priorities?

Quite possibly, this was the question you haven't answered even to yourself. But regardless of whether you thought about it priorly or not, your answer was:

[] "I wish to master the thaumaturgy first"

[] "I must balance my work on strengths and weaknesses, which limits the time I have for other ventures"

[] "I would like to work on the soul aspect but a bit later"

[] "Honestly, I'm a bit afraid of it"

[] Write-in

Judging by his face, the man gave a deep thought to what you have said, but unfortunately, he didn't let you know what did he think about or even why did he ask you thins in the first place.

"Right then. Time to pay you with the feedback that I owe you. The first thing that I'd like to highlight is the same remark that I made the previous time - you need to work on your spellcasting technique. Not the proficiency with the aspect itself, but the general methodology of spellcasting. Call it the arcane skill, if you will. You have the significant natural degree with it, but sharpening it up would not only make your process of mastering other aspects easier but will also greatly increase the efficiency of those evocations and feats you already know. In some cases, it is better to have the smaller arsenal of feats that you have mastered than to have a large variety of options which you can't exploit properly. The good old quality versus quantity argument"

"How can I raise my arcane skill?"

"Simply, my dear lady, you cast the incantations that you already know until you run out of stamina, focus, or both, which is even better. Practice makes perfect. You can do so on your own or, if only you haven't grown tired of my voice, have me supervise you"

That sounded straightforward enough for you to nod in confirmation, "Thank you, sir Norskov. But what is another part of your feedback?"

"Do you remember what I told you about the arcane styles?"

"Umm... yes. If you mean the various ways of using arcane aspects"

"Indeed, young lady. Have you, per any chance, figured out how would you like to direct your training?"

Despite its subtle form, the question put you in the situation of carrying out a decision, which wasn't so easy.

"Ulren told me earlier that I can use magic in a fight to cover my weaknesses and amplify strengths. Can you teach me how to?"

This answer with a follow-up question seemingly sparked interest in man's eyes. "Oh my, you took an interest in the martial path as well? Please, remind me some time to avoid angering you, young lady," he spoke out jokingly, switching to a more serious tone shortly afterward, "However, I never knew that the friend of yours would know how to tie-in the thaumaturgy into the arcane martial traditions of his people. As far as I knew, Roths, and especially Gvuroths, are the best elementalists that Pheotor has to offer. However, they are very limited when it comes to other types of aspects..." after saying that, Karl held a short pause, considering something, "Say, would you be so kind to persuade your friend to join our sessions? I was always curious about how does his race handles the aspects and through which philosophies they master them"

"I can but why you don't ask him? Ulren is good, he will listen"

Karl chuckled to your reply, "I have no doubts about your judgment, young Seer, but it appears that you have the much higher influence on him, so he would likely heed to your plea for self-betterment than to my scientific curiosity, which, however, pursues the same goal".

You gave Karl a slightly suspicious look. Is he not a friend to Ulren? It was a bit hard to believe so knowing the latter.

"Think nothing ill of it: I'm just looking forward to whether or not would we manage to synthesize a style that would utilize the advantages of both magical and physical kinds. Assuming that the Bhiroth friend of yours has a background in training troops, he might also find this little venture as a pleasantly challenging project. If not, I can synthesize the perks and tricks of my pyromancy school and apply it to your arsenal of spells. Please note that my style is mostly offensive and doesn't possess a lot of beneficial or indirect spells. And in addition to that, it mostly operates on its own, with little to no synergies with martial prowess or other arcane styles. So, what our Ivory Seer would prefer?"

[] "I'll ask Ulren about helping us make a new style"

(This will allow a new type of attack and defense rolls that are composed of both arcane and physical skill checks. Using this style would also reduce the difficulty check for one gradation (-4 or -3 points) and imply benefits and limitations common to an archetypical battle mage. Additionally, practicing arcane would allow you to also raise melee or defense skill by 1/2 point per a session cost-free. Your potential maximum speed of mastering thaumaturgy will be slightly reduced)

[] "I'd like to learn what your style has to offer"

(The combat situations will be mostly resolved by your arcane skill check. You will have the perks and limitations common to a pure mage. However, this particular teacher can't teach you much about non-combative and non-direct spells, which will have a significant impact on your earlier arsenal and a minor influence on the way you will see magic as the whole. Picking this option would also grant you with 1/3 bonus points of arcane skill per each thaumaturgy training session)

[] "I don't think I can decide yet"

(Maybe you don't really want to focus on thaumaturgy at this moment, or maybe you just don't like the styles offered. Perhaps, you would rather seek/wait for new aspects to learn or for other mentors and thus styles. Maybe you simply don't want to waste that much time on arcane as a whole, which is also a way around)

After carrying out this decision, it was but a short amount of time until Karl bid you a good evening in his characteristically polite manner and you dug back into the books. This evening, you learned from the book about the concept Karl did not mention to you - the double aspect affiliation spellcasting. Recalling that thaumaturgy is not your only talent, you could only wonder whether or not you can somehow link it to the soul aspect. Is that even possible? And it, then how exactly and to what end it can be used? As the sleep draw near, you had to put answering these questions to another time.
_________________________
You woke up late, feeling that the soreness from the strength exercises you underwent two days before faded, but it wasn't what woke you up - you had another strange dream. This time, you saw a fine basket situated in a richly decorated room. Inside it was a scrap of impeccably smooth cloth and a heap of small eggs wrapped in it. The only strange thing that you envisioned was the first hatching of an egg: it was not a bird that appeared from it but a snake. Your vision ended as abruptly as it came, leaving you to think what might it be about or if it even has any sense at all. Perhaps you should share with someone with these visions of yours? Maybe. But you had other things to do today, such as wings training.

With Rosaline temporarily gone, you now had a perfect opportunity to try something new in course of training your wings, something she would consider as drastic and thus would not need to know about! With unrelenting enthusiasm, you went to the balcony on the first floor... and, after a short struggle with fear, hopped down, working with your wings hard. You did not take the flight, though, but neither you fell ungracefully. Your landing was relatively smooth, and with even brighter enthusiasm you made your way back to the balcony from the inner yard to go for consecutive attempts. Desperately trying to lift the metaphorical bar, you made four more attempts before some younger guardian noticed what were you doing, alerted a couple of his comrades, and began the pursuit of you. Apparently, allowing you to put yourself to risks was not something they would put into their service record, which ensued in they chasing you over half the mansion. This silly occurrence of you gleefully running away and dodging their grapples raised a fair number of dwellers' eyebrows, and, after this ridiculously fun run, you slipped inside your room, locking and pressing the door with your back. Breathing heavily and barely holding laughts, you listened to the young guardsmen outside arguing with each other about not reporting this incident to Ulren for their own sake and keeping a closer eye on you from now on.

You were more excited by this whimsical event more than about your progress in reaching the skies, though. In the course of your today's lesson, you didn't make the sufficient progress, but you have experienced a strange feeling of... a kick? Or was it an impulse? This new feeling occurred when you attempted to lift off the surface in a singular strong series of flaps. Can it be essential for finally lifting oneself? You will have to try it again another time, after you figure out how and where to make another attempt.

Sufficiently amused, you regained your breath. You fulfilled your plan for now, so it was the right time to decide on how to proceed further. Rosaline was still away, tending to her business in the capital city. You've had a productive half of the week that opened a few avenues for your improvement. And the manor still offered so many opportunities and leisure.

Preset plan: Big Bro's little co##blocker valkyrie that is, with which you subjected yourselves to some hilarity in the future.

Roll me three d20 for INT, WIS, and arcane.

INT 17+5 > 17 aka good try
WIS 5+3 < 17 aka what common sense?

Now, who would be the hero who'd roll 14 or more for arcane?

EDIT: thats good right?
Yep. Hereby, you are the official Dovahkiin of this thread.

And yea, that's good. MC gonna reach thaumaturgy lvl 6 and make 33% of progress 'till lvl 7.
Translating from the nerd language to English: Lucy gonna learn some good tricks and a little bit more

Just a little hint
Just feelin' charitable enough to give you a free hint:
Judging by the previous vote (and how all voters went for the mage-fighter hybrid), you seem to have decided on the class niche for Lucy. With that decision made, you may want to decide on whom you'd like to see at your party of misfits. Note that it is an indirect choice in 30% of cases. By that, I mean that some characters may forward you to some other characters they know who would likely join you (or not very likely, or conditionally). That being said, you still have some time to decide whom and why you'd like to see in unless you would prefer to rely on your luck later on.
