[x] I feel honored, of course, and it's such a wonderful opportunity for me to truly live up to my potential. Not to brag, but I have to say that I don't find the more, ah, standard level of education particularly challenging; you know what I'm talking about, of course, having attended the academy yourself... actually, since you say that we have some time today, would a small tour of the place be in order?
What do you think about all of this?
Your lips quirk absently, mind jumping from thought to thought; there's a lot to think about. New city. New school. New, swanky residence; new family. New atmosphere - that much is made obvious as a gust of wind carries the sounds of the bustling city to you. A new chapter in your life.
That doesn't mean you have to think for longer than a moment before you decide, offering a confident little smile to your enigmatic cousin. What do you think about it?
"I feel honored, of course," you say as if its the most obvious thing in the world. "It's such a…" you roll the words in your mouth, almost tasting them. "...wonderful opportunity for me to truly live up to my potential."
Yui nods, free hand diving into the satchel at her side to replace a pen. "Oh?" she says softly, eyes glittering.
You nod in affirmation. Of course, you should elaborate. "Not to brag--" And of course you aren't. You're making a simple statement of fact. "--but I have to say that I don't find the more, ah, standard level of education particularly challenging." You nobly battle and lose to the urge to wrinkle your nose in distaste.
"You know what I'm talking about, of course, having attended the academy yourself."
"Of course," Yui encourages, pressing down lightly on the accelerator. The cruise is quite nice, at this time of day, the streets sparsely populated. You decide you rather like the mornings here. The rest of your day should prove to be… worth figuring out, come to think of it.
"Actually," you resume after a moment's pause. "Since you say that we have some time today, would a small tour of the place be in order?"
"On New Year's?" Yui scoffs.
...she does indeed have a point. You blink, the cold wind blowing past your now slightly redder ears.
"Fair enough," you recover gracefully. "Well, I'll just have to se--"
You're interrupted by the car slewing sharply to the side, Yui spinning the wheel expertly and her feet working the pedals. You're jerked against your restraints as the wheels glide across the slick ice. You barely have time to scream before the car comes to a dainty halt, parked perfectly between two others.
A car alarm blares in the distance, and you raggedly exhale a breath you don't remember drawing.
Yui calmly clicks the engine off and slides out of the car, stepping onto the sidewalk before turning to face you with an amused expression.
You clutch at your palpitating heart. "Are you trying to kill me, Yui?"
"Clearly not," Yui answers with a little chuckle. Her head tilts to the side minutely."You're still here, right?"
"No. I'm pretty sure I'm not," you mumble, sliding down in your seat.
"What a shame," Yui says thoughtfully, tapping a finger to her chin. "I guess I don't have to hold the door, then. Or share the mochi I made earlier. Oh well."
With that she turns briskly on her heel, heading into the long, low apartment building with you clambering out of the car to catch up.
Yui waits patiently by the door as you flounder over the ankle deep snow, suitcases in hand. You resist the urge to glower at your cousin, barely maintaining a neutral and dignified expression.
"Everything alright there?" she asks innocently.
"Mmmhm," you grumble.
"As I thought," Yui chuckles airily before leaving you to plod up the stairs with both suitcases. You absently note the paintings on every landing, even in the dim, early morning light of the new year that you wish you could have greeted a little later.
You arrive before a door on the third floor, and Yui swipes a keycard and press in with two deft, rehearsed motions. Your new apartment. New home.
"I'll make tea in a moment," Yui says simply as she steps in before turning to face you expectantly. "But for now, welcome home."
"I'm home," you say, stepping in after your cousin and smiling at her. You look around at the spacious room before you - a single couch, a coffee table, sitting mats arrayed over the floor. Kitchenette and rooms on either side. You could consider it spartan, if it weren't for the obvious quality of the furnishings. The entire apartment speaks of reservation and wealth all at once, mellow hues of brown and tan all over.
You could learn to like this place, you think.
"Your room," Yui states simply. "Is over there." She points to one of two doors on a side, opposite the single television. "Mine is opposite. Why don't you settle in?"
You give her a weary nod, trudging over without further comment. You open the door, and step into a small room with a thin, long, floor-to-ceiling window and what is presumably your own bathroom. A single's bed sits in the corner of the room, a small table resting beside it with a single lamp. You run your hand over the polished, wooden frame - you think this might be real mahogany.
A sigh escapes your lips as you set your briefcase down at the foot of the bed, just drinking it all in.
Grey light begins to flood the room and you turn, regarding yourself in the mirror as you begin to unpack your more personal belongings first. It's going to be a long day.
