@lifeofgesture Our Genjutsu roll should have had an additional +50 on it, thanks to our Chakra Control. Not that it would have changed anything, but still.
Sakura knows stuff, is there a way for Zabuza to prevent us from Substituting with something else?

I mean, it's only sensible to give the enemy the least amount of info possible without outright lying, and doing all we can to distance ourselves from this swordsmith person is entirely reasonable.
Full name implies familiarity, and a name like ours, combined with our swords? Yeah, I can imagine all too well what people would assume.
At least if pressed, we can claim that the swords we're using are the basic stuff "Haruno" made during training, so we were allowed to have them. In exchange for doing some sealwork for them or something.

Because he's asking for explicitly the name, and would probably just ask again (or hurt us) if we keep not giving him what he wants. Knowing someone's last name does not require any familiarity, we know Orochimaru's name after all and we aren't that familiar with him personally.

but in naruto, people can pinpoint who a moniker refers to perfectly; there must be 1000 "Minatos" accross the EC, but there's only 1 "Yellow Flash" Zabuza wants to find us, lets HALP him & give him a unique identifier.
Maybe. but he will probably ask for the name too(and he will probably 'know' if we lie and say the we don't know it), and then we will like in the begining, better just say our last name and be over with it.

The thing is, we have no moniker, anything we come up with would be a lie. And considering our academy teachers called us the 'haruno genius" instead of our name, odds are it isn't that common.

that's the idea; we don't have a moniker untill someone makes one; if we say "Haruno The Art Maiden," he'd look for "Haruno The Art Maiden," but she isn't known so Zabuza would go galivanting of with our name looking for someone who doesn't exist yet.
That makes it a lie. A name is what we are known as, and we aren't known as The Art Maiden

not necesserily, how do you think these monikers start? Everybody ever gets together to discuss this month's new names in ninjaring? no; said rising stars don't give out their actual names & either they give out a pseudonym, or some civvie/survivior gives them a title based on their abillities.

Dude, we have a guy about to crush Sakura's neck why the fuck would we not just give out a name? Seriously now is not the time for this.
You don't choose your own title, its given to you. The Sannin are a prime example. And its official only once everyone starts using it, it might have started out with only a few people but it spread, something that has not happened with the title you suggested.

"Haruno." You rasp out, keenly aware of your fragility in that moment. Zabuza mulled that over for a moment before dropping you to the ground.
"Haku," He snaps, and the dome of mirrors surrounding Raiza disappear. A beautiful young girl appears next to Zabuza, staring at you neutrally. "We're leaving. The mission was a failure."
You get up slowly and stumble your way to your team. Sasuke looked pale and sickly while Raiza looked like a porcupine as she painfully pulled out senbon. Kabuto had woken up the other girl and sent her off. She was sniffling tears as she passed you.
Zabuza smirked at the sight of your team together. "Better hope you're not entering the chuunin exams this year with that lot, Yakushi. Pathetic."
And then they were gone.

Kabuto sensei healed your wrists and Raiza's wounds, but lectured you at length about not retreating to your jounin sensei and that there was no shame in retreating against a stronger enemy. Team Minato showed back up shortly after Zabuza's team disappeared, looking worse for wear but overall intact. Obito had hugged Sasuke, much to his surprise, worried that such a strong opponent like Zabuza had appeared against his cousin.
Sasuke had seemed ashamed though. You guessed it had to do with his performance. You didn't blame him for freezing up against the killing intent, you had barely thrown it off yourself, but you didn't know what to say that wouldn't bring it up or make the situation worse. Fortunately Kabuto sensei quietly talked to Sasuke along the way home and his face cleared up a little.
Nothing else happened after Zabuza's assault fortunately. Rika bowed to all of you gratefully after you got her inside Konoha and thanked you for saving her life, before being whisked away by Sarutobi servants to be fed. You were glad to see the pay voucher of 15000 ryo, that some good had come out of the mission, but Raiza, who had been quiet the entire time, spoke up before Kabuto sensei disbanded the team for rest.
"Kabuto sensei ... are you going to sign us up for the chuunin exams?" She asked, pensively.
Kabuto sensei's perpetual smile twitched. "Ah. That. Well it's a little early to be thinking about that. It's in two months ..."
"That's soon in my opinion." She argued, before folding her arms and looking at him pointedly.
He sighed. "Well they're holding it in Iwa which isn't too bad ..."
