Plus C: the Ministry had to go very far to perform the reprisal in question - the people they targeted were still in Italy, Crouch triggered an international incident with that series of blows in the war by sending people to do it.

Now that makes a huge amount of difference.

I've been reading the situation until now as Crouch going in and slaughtering Rosetta's base in England wiping out the support staff and families there.

Pulling off a strike in Italy though, I'm suddenly viewing Crouch's appointment to International affairs as less a demotion and more of 'PIss us off, and we'll let our attack dog loose'

Have to say this is one of my absolute favorite stories of all time, so far, and I'm very glad to see it getting new attention.

I personally cannot wait to see the look on poor EMIYA's face when he meets Team Saber and Team Lancer. The level of sheer OMGWTFBBQ will be awesome.

Yeah, attacking people in another country, one that doesn't even have a border with Britain is a very different matter from what I was picturing.

I hope this fic isn't dead! I enjoy it a lot. My only critique has to be about the descriptions in the text - everything else runs smoothly and I keep tripping over the sudden appearances of these:

Pale Wolf said:
Stepping quietly behind them was a younger girl with shoulder-length raven hair, deep blue eyes, pale skin, and just the proper mix of slender and curvy, with a calmly melancholic expression on a face that was downright compelling. Clad in a creamy white short pleated skirt, and similarly-coloured blazer, with her delicately-formed hands clasped in front of herself.

Pale Wolf said:
Faolan - no last name - was a young woman, a bit shorter than average, slender and quite attractive, with pale skin, hip-length coral-pink hair (dyed, obviously - hair dye was popular among werewolves, the circle was a veritable rainbow) with a hairband valiantly struggling to keep the mass of it from running into her face, glittering blue eyes and a refined, delicate face. In a rarity for werewolves, her clothing was always immaculate - a tight black vest wrapped around her upper body, a past knee-length black skirt slit right up the left side, both with dark yellow trim, and yellow calf-length wedge-heeled boots, crossed at the ankle at the moment. She'd picked up a tattoo at some point in the past few months - a crimson inking on her bare left shoulder of a curved sword wrapped in a sinuous stream of flame. A rare 'actually age-appropriate' thing to see from her.

It's way, way too long. It reads like the early amateur fanfic attempts from young authors who spend paragraphs describing their MC, and it sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of otherwise strong writing. It's a really ham-handed way to go about describing the visuals of your characters. It's also a little skeevy since I noticed only the pretty women get described in such loving, exhausting detail.

Presuming that was before fateful night at Godrik's Hollow...
As far as Ettore was concerned, he was on a business trip that happened to be against the Ministry this time. It wasn't personal for him, so he assumed that everyone would handle things rationally and reasonably - pissing off a mercenary unit without finishing them off is a terrible idea because now all your enemies get discounts.
On other hand he didn't thought things rationally enough. Ministry was losing. Pissed off Ettore didn't change things, another mercenary/ally/other or two (or ten) would. Killing off Ettore's group dependants showed each and every possible hire of Voldieshirts a big flashing neon "AND FUCK OFF" sign. So his prospects became limited to solitaries, while groups suddenly have to rethink idea of employment.

Now if it was after war then it's actually stupid.

Mercenaries are classically somewhat outside participants to the conflict. Ettore would have worked for the Ministry instead if the price had been right, he had worked for the Ministry before.

He A: forgot that the Ministry only gets to worry rationally about the long term once it's survived the short term; and B: was sociopathic enough that this was just another job to him, and expected that to be understood and dealt with on its own level.

Yeah I was thinking about that B part. Like a lot of hired killers he has this double standard were he can go around murdering as he pleases because "Its just business" while completely ignoring that when human lives are involved its always personal to someone. As @al103 pointed out the Ministry could just as easily say that murdering his family was "just business" to discourage other mercenaries from signing up with Voldemort. But suddenly when he's on the receiving end of it he decides that now its personal. I hope someone points out the hypocrisy at some point.

Oh wow, this thread.

I actually was gonna write to you in your profile @Pale Wolf about if you were gonna update this fic.

Are you going to update on SB too?

Do you also like fan art?

;)

This isn't actually updated as yet, and I don't have one ready for release at this time - this was just one of the beneficial side effects of SV's 'seriously necro is fine' policy. When I have one it'll go to both places.

And I certainly don't mind fanart.

..... Ahhh, that was fun again. Though a bunch of the links after 13 or so don't seem to be working right. Also a bit annoyed I can't seem to find the reader mode, though I could just be doing it wrong/not active on this thread....

Huh. This is an interesting concept/fanfiction. I've been super excited reading it. I also really enjoy it because I'm Exchanging to Japan for a year myself, so this is relateable in a fictional-fantasy kind of way.

Adding my voice in to request threadmarks. Just discovered and read through, really good fic, very interesting.

Incidentally, what do we know about the Servants so far?

Saber: Female, Kotomine Kirei is summoning. Decent chance of Arturia just because it's always Arturia. On the other hand, I'm hoping Pale Wolf is more original than that.
Lancer: Nothing known except gender and I've forgotten that already. Japanese OC Master
Rider: Almost certainly Salazar Slytherin. Italian OC mercenary Master
Archer: Female. Basque. Likes javelins, fire, and poison. Werewolf leader OC Master
Caster: Indian. From the artifacts, almost certainly Karna, who has been summoned as Archer in Nasuverse before. OC Master loyal to Voldemort
Berserker: Hervor, Scandinavian hero from the Cycle of Tyrfing. Harry Potter is Master
Assassin: Emiya Shirou. GARssassin? Iranian OC Master.
???: Eighth Servant. Nothing known at this time.

Problem: Saber's been namedropped as Saint Jadwiga. Lancer may be Izanami, what with wielding a spear (Ameno nu Hoko), and her only action being an invitation (Izanami means she who invites.) Archer is Viriathus, as was discussed on SB.

I think someone guessed the eight servant identity earlier in the thread but I don't remember. And no one guessed anything about Lancer yet?

She's heterochromic, so probably not.

Also, as I've admitted on SB, what would be the point of writing a Harry Potter and FSN crossover without including Saint Hedwig?

Lancer: Nothing known except gender and I've forgotten that already. Japanese OC Master

Female, though she hasn't showed anyone her spear (kyaa), so it's hard to tell.

Rider: Almost certainly Salazar Slytherin. Italian OC mercenary Master

Not said outright, but I mean he's said he was a wizard and he was summoned with a very large snake scale as catalyst, so...

Archer: Female. Basque. Likes javelins, fire, and poison. Werewolf leader OC Master

Not necessarily Basque. She definitely is Iberian, but I may be lifting Basque as a paleohispanic language to sub in for somewhere else in pre-Roman Iberia (since the languages in question were lost).

Most likely Jadwiga of Poland. She introduced herself under a Polish name litterally meaning "Saber"

Jadzia Szabla. Jadzia is a diminutive form of Jadwiga.

And yes, All Fictions figured out that the eighth Servant is Llacheu.

IIRC, isn't Archer a genderbent Viriatus?

One of things I remember liking so much about this fic when I first read it on SB (and then was reminded of when I reread it a couple days ago because of the bump) is all the background work you put in to fleshing out the background of the cross, like you did in your FSN/Code Geass one (speaking of which, is that pretty much dead or way in your back burner?) and in here.

For example, in turning the Department of Mysteries into Wizarding Britain's version of MI6, the whole foreign relations of Britain thing and how they're so fucked up because of old unequal treaties and fallout from shadowruns and how Fudge was so incompetent as Minister of Magic with regards to that and other things and sticking his head in the sand, and then mentioning the MIB as the magical equivalent of the CIA in one of the first chapters as a mere background note, and how Amelia Bones is able to turn things around so damn quickly just as as interim Minister because she's actually competent. Hope you come back to this sooner rather than later and that the bump of this fires up your muse.

I'd call it way in the back burner. But yeah the background work is really fun.
