When there's no wind.
Helen was used to being alone, due to her parents always being busy with work, not that she resented them or anything, they did it to make sure she had everything she needed, both health wise and educationally.
Then Cream had broken into her room and Sonic arrived shortly after, followed by Tails, and suddenly she felt a weight she didn't know she had become lighter.
Cream, with her ever present optimism, never doubting they would get back home and find all their friends, doing her best to act mature and help around the house.
Sonic, ever active and running around, he didn't spend that much time in the house, but she noticed that for all his cool guy attitude, he was always keeping an eye on everyone, ready to talk and keep their minds off of things.
She hasn't had much time to get to know Tails, but she could tell he and Sonic were close, Cream said they were brothers, she could definitely see it, he didn't spend much time in the house either, but it was mostly because there was no place to hide his plane, so he mostly came to sleep on her couch.
She made a note to go shopping for futons, as much as Cream enjoyed it, she couldn't keep sleeping in her plush toy pile, and she didn't feel right having Tails constantly on the couch, Sonic seemed content to sleep wherever, kinda like a cat now that she thought about it.
Helen had never really thought about having siblings, but she guessed that it would probably be something like this.
Then Sonic got hurt and she understood a bit more about them.
She noticed slight changes in how they acted, there was a tension that wasn't there before.
Cream, trying to finish her self-assigned chores, as though she was suddenly on a time limit.
Tails seemed more tense, and started to come along and stay more often, offering to help fix things around the house. She noticed that when she accepted the offer he first checked the windows and doors before anything else, and whenever he did fix anything one of his ears stayed turned towards a window, constantly alert.
The final piece of the puzzle came when one morning Cream asked her where her emergency escape kit was, so she could help dust it off and check to see if anything needed replacing.
Her heart almost broke upon seeing the confused and concerned look on the young rabbit's face when she told her she didn't have one, as though she couldn't imagine such a thing, she overheard her frantically whispering to Tails one night when they thought she was asleep.
Sonic was more than a friend or brother to them, he was a pillar, someone they could lean on, so long as he was around to protect them, they could relax.
But the moment he was hurt, they suddenly seemed more alert, ready to run or fight at a moments notice, as though they expected the bogeyman that had haunted their world to appear now that their hero was out of commission, even if only temporarily, his absence took away the part of them that allowed them to act like the kids they were.
She decided not to comment on the fact that some things went missing and a box she didn't remember had appeared on a low shelf in the living room, or the fact the wheels of her chair seemed more rugged, made for rougher terrain.
She knew that she wasn't suited to comfort them, she didn't know even half of what they've been through, though she made a promise to herself to talk to Sonic about that, she wanted to understand them, to be able to be there for them.
So she made a plan, neither Cream or Tails felt like going out, citing some excuse or another, but by this point she could tell they were simply nervous about being out in the open without Sonic or the rest of their friends around in case something happened.
Of course, she knew one thing that would get them to move, and so on one of the nights Tails had gone out to check in his plane, she talked to Cream, it only took a few minutes to convince her.
And so, when Tails arrived the next day, he found Helen dressed to go out, a blanket covering her legs and the lower compartment of her wheelchair, where stuff could be stored, "umm hi Helen, thinking of going out?" He asked, subtly looking around, trying to find a way to convince her not to go, she lifted an eyebrow upon seeing his eyes light up "ah, w, what about Cream? I kinda have to go back to check on the Tornado, and she will be all alone!" She nodded, seeing the logic, before responding "true, but that's why…" then she rapped on her chair three times.
Suddenly with a scream of "Surprise!!" Cream flew out from under the blanket, wearing a pink nurse cap and carrying a first aid kit she got from the box "Nurse Cream reporting for duty!" She cheered as she did a twirl while Tails looked at Helen with an expression that told her he knew what she was going to say next.
So Helen smiled and finished "and that's why she's coming with us to visit Sonic at the hospital! So go brush your fur Tails, we leave in five minutes" as she saw the fox kit leave, she couldn't help but feel lighter, she might not be able to make them feel safe yet, but she could bring them to the one person who could, at least until they found the rest of their friends.
She noticed Cream looking in a mirror, adjusting her cap cheerfully and decided to ask "say Cream, where did you get that cap?" The rabbit turned her head to answer while continuing making sure the cap was staying properly between her ears "hmm? Oh! I found it in a box while I was cleaning your parents room, I didn't know your parents had so many jobs!"
Helen felt a chill run down her spine "m,many jobs? What do you mean?" Cream, not noticing her dread, answered innocently "there were lots of outfits in there, they were even tagged! There were outfits for police, a teacher, headmaster and headmistress, plumber, doctor and a nurse outfit! They wouldn't fit me though, so I only took the hat"
Helen added therapy for herself to the list, she did not need to know about that, and would regret asking for the rest of her life.
AN: And here's another Omake! Since Sonic got hurt I wanted to write about the reaction of the younger Mobians to that, since this is set before the events of Adventure, Tails isn't as brave as he would eventually be, not to the levels he was in Forces (never that level of afraid) but he still hasn't developed his own courage, he still decided to stick to the house to keep an eye on both Cream and Helen while Sonic's recovering.
