Guest Art & 2024 notes
Hey look at that, I'm all caught up! I started redrawing the first couple of pages of this comic in 2024 after I rescued it from obscurity (as it was originally hosted on the now-defunct Smackjeeves site), and then I just never stopped. As it turns out, I remembered that I like drawing! (But not on a computer.) You might see more screentones creeping in as my markers run out of ink, which they do depressingly quickly. I think that's why I switched to watercolors in the first place in fact, but I no longer have time to do watercolor pages at the current moment.

Future pages will just be posted up as I make them, no more huge image dump posts. Feedback welcome. I know my art isn't the best (that's why I started drawing this comic, to practice/train). If you see a black and white you want to try coloring, I'm always open to that. There's also a lot of guest artwork to be found for this comic; it's all posted up in the footnotes of the fanfiction version of this story. Cheers!

While there are some rough edges, your drawing is really good.

Will you use elements from Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus? Or will this be its own thing?

Also does the Mako poisoning turn people into monsters who have magic skills? Or does it extend to all organisms?

Heya! Thanks for all the likes! 💚

To answer your question: I already pulled design elements from AC and DoC and even Rebirth / Remake in some of the sketches... that's why Chaos Vincent looks the way he does. I started before DoC had been released, which is why this and this 2005 page got redraws. Back in those internet cowboy days I worked on character design by popping in my playstation CDs and pausing the game to look at these characters while in the battle screen, LOL. Advent Children was both a shock and a major upgrade, and DoC doubly so! But the good kind. I just wish Vincent would stop changing his boots, prosthetic arm, and hair, haha.

As for using story elements from AC and DoC... naw, not really. While I actually really enjoy DoC storywise, I think there's too much canon divergence in this story (especially the Sephiroth being Vincent's son thing) for it to mesh well with the later works. So yeah, this is kind of a stand-alone universe. (Or one of the many multiverses that SqEn seems to be pushing as canon for the Remake / Rebirth stories!)

As for Mako poisoning: I think whether or not you get magic skills would depend on whether or not you had inherent magic skills before you got the mako poisoning. I imagine Aerith, Nanaki, and maybe even Yuffie (ninja magic!) would be able to develop into monsters with monstrous magic skills, while people like Cloud, Tifa, Cid, or Barret would just become plain old monsters. I don't think Vincent can get mako poisoning, he's already been killed and mako resurrected by Shinra! But I imagine he'd have a harder and harder time controlling his 4 inner monsters, and physically, I suppose given enough time, he might start looking more and more like Galian Beast.

But in a nutshell: any living organism that absorbs too much mako will eventually turn into some sort of monster. It ain't healthy!

Cheers :)

I've been unhappy with the way markers were working out for greytones, so I fired up my tablet and got it working again and tried coloring Chapter 8's cover. Nope, still hate digital coloring, whew. 😅

Oh man, this is some good stuff. Revisiting something you made a long time ago is pretty based, I kinda wish more people did that.

The materia details are my favorite part. Game mechanics thoughtfully integrated into worldbuilding and plot just get me excited for some reason.

(I wonder if it's canon in this story that, upon arriving at the Northern Crater, the party immediately turned back and started doing a bunch of irrelevant stuff like chocobo breeding while Meteor hung over everyone's heads...)

The original game gave us 8 roughly equivalent blank slates with unique weapons & limit breaks. Yuffie and Vincent ended up being my two always required party members because they both had ranged weapons and easy limit breaks, and a levelled Yuffie's All Creation was a very effective field leveler. (And I played so much the Death Penalty was possibly the most powerful weapon in my game.) So yeah, I did a lot of that before dealing with Meteor in my game, LOL. I also just spent a stupid amount of time leveling up in the Crater to test mastered materia combos. Ahh, to be young and have time to play video games again. :lol2:

I don't think this party ran around too much while meteor was actually falling. They just took their sweet time to get to the state where meteor was summoned. ;-)

Soooo... I was working on this next page, and then my computer buzzed at me angrily, crashed, and when I re-opened the photoshop file, it was corrupted. I managed to save it as it was and export it as a JPG, but, uh. It wasn't finished. (There was supposed to be a bit more sound effect like text to clue readers in to what was going on with the bracelet.) I don't want to redo all the screentones I generated though because it took a long time, so I suppose it's going up as-is. :/ We'll see if I end up switching back to markers or not, I hope that was just a fluke and not a sign of strained protest from my potato machine.

Lemmie know if you readers out there have a preference for future pages. "Better artwork" is not one I am sure I can make happen, LOL, however, how to color in the lineart I have some control over.

1) Markers are fastest and easiest for me, but they look a little janky sometimes, especially when they start to run out of ink.

2) I think doing black and white screentones in photoshop is a lot of fun, but they kill my computer if I layer too many in.

3) Digital coloring is a little easier on my potato processors, but it's less fun for me because I'm doing it all with a mouse and the path tool. (My Huion stylus stopped working properly ever since Microsoft switched to Windows Ink. Thanks, Microsoft. Thanks so much.)

4) go back to watercolors already Enkida! (or try gouache, sameish thing)

If no1curr, I'll just keep experimenting until I find a groove I guess!
