Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Y'all wanna know something interesting I realized today? You, as Sosuke, promised to write your parents when you are able. It's been a month.

Just something I found amusing.

Anyway, update is in progress. Should be up in an hour or so.
We have been time skipping. I think most people would have assumed he had written to them over the time skips.

We have been time skipping. I think most people would have assumed he had written to them over the time skips.
Of course~! Thats what timeskips are for. To quickly get through tedious duties and jump to interesting bits. I'm pretty sure everyone here agree's that writing home is tedious so we should have done that during the timeskip.

... Furthermore with our etiquette we should have known to do it. Or are you saying we didn't follow etiquette? *rubs it in* Etiquette. :drevil:

I'll say Sosuke has written three letters so far, sure. Even still, consider writing up a short something for them some time in the future, eh?

Update is half finished, by the way.

Give me some time and I'll do a three-letter recap of recent events for the parents. Just working on some other stuff when I should be sleeping (and waking up in three hours), but whatevers.

If you want to do that, sure. I think you should probably get some sleep, though, and I was really referring to future letters past this point for any writing. For my part, I'm mostly just having some amusement that everyone apparently forgot. Kind of like kids in the real world, often enough.

"Why don't you ever call us?"

Heh heh heh.

You bow to her, going a low as to your waist. This woman is a magistrate, and thus of higher status than you. Strictly speaking, as she is from another Clan that doesn't give her authority over you. But in reality, as an upholder of the law she has great control over your fate. You can contest her decisions, but chances are this wouldn't go well.

That being the case, you decide to be as upfront as possible.

"Thank you for your assistance, Magistrate," you say. "As for what happened, my companions and I were enjoying a play when the assailants approached and brandished knives. I charged them to give my companions time to react, and from there we fought them off as a group until your timely arrival forced those still standing to flee."

"Is that so?" Asami asks, looking around at the bodies. The man with the arrow in his chest is trying to crawl away, but the two remaining magistrates by Asami's side pin him down and tie his hands. At this point, the man stops moving and passes out. "That's certainly an interesting story."

"Be careful with him," Shasa says. "These men are all undoubtedly Tainted."

"What?" One of the magistrates cries, jumping to her feet and backing away. "Oh… Oh damn."

"Did any of his blood get on me," the other one says, standing up and looking himself over. He seems close to panic, eyes darting across his body. "Did it? Please tell me it didn't."

"Calm down!" Asami barks, and the two magistrates compose themselves quickly. She turns to Shasa. "And how can you know this? They're sickly looking, sure, but that's not always a sign of Taint."

You remove your finger of Jade and press it to the skin of one of the dead attackers. The skin sizzles under its presence noticeably before you remove it. Everyone stares at the burned patch of skin, and then back at you as you put the finger of Jade back around your neck.

"You likely don't have to worry about the Taint," you say. "It is only the truly Lost who can spread it so easily. For ones like these, who can mostly pass as normal, they would need to actively try to infect you. It's not a simple thing, though I would still check for it just to make sure you are all right."

"Thanks for the advice," Asami says dryly. "And you are?"

"My apologies," you say, bowing again. "I am Hiruma Sosuke, and these are my companions Shirou of the Order of Osano-wo, and Hiruma Shasa-san. Bayushi-san here is Bayushi Mataru, and I'm glad he was around. Might have gotten a bit difficult otherwise." You straighten, not entirely sure where to go from there. "So… um… yeah. That's what happened."

"I see," Asami says. She moves over to one of the corpses and cuts a sleeve up with her wakazashi, revealing a tattoo. "Stinging Hornet." She moves to the others, doing the same and showing different tattoos. "Night Hawk and Red Snake."

"Gang members?" you ask, looking at the tattoos. They're all rather crude, the hands that marked their skins obviously not very skilled in the art of inking flesh. "But what would three different gangs want with us?"

"That's what I want to know," Asami says, standing up. "These three groups hate each other. Why are they working together? Furthermore, why are they Tainted?" She scowls at you. "You and I need to have a long conversation, Hiruma Sosuke."

"I think I can shed a bit more light on this," Mataru says. He's kneeling by one of the bodies, opening a woman's mouth with his knife. There, beneath the tongue, is another tattoo. It is shaped like a spider made of bones. He looks back up at everyone, frowning. "They're not three groups acting as one. They're one group within all three."

"Dammit," Asami curses, her already bad mood getting even worse as her lips contract into a thin line. "These bastards."

[] Question her about the tattoo.
[] Request to return to the Castle.
[] Write in.

3 Letters Omake!

Letter 01

Honourable Parents...

This excursion with Yasuki-sama and Hiruma-san has proven most educational thus far, albeit also difficult. While I must admit that it has proven both refreshing and enjoyable to see Rokugan behind the Wall, and to know just what it is we are fighting for... it is more than a little daunting and I find myself struggling to get used to it. I don't know if I'll manage it by the time we arrive into Scorpion lands, since their reputations leaves me wary of them using it in some fashion to disturb our intentions for their own benefit.

I have gotten on well with Yasuki-sama, whose advice has proven most thought-provoking. It has been less successful with Hiruma Shasa due to some miscommunication on my part offending her. I have made efforts to make amends since then, but I am left somewhat cautious in conversation. Yasuki-sama has found it funny, so I imagine entertaining him at least serves some purpose.

Your Son,
Sosuke

Letter 02

Honourable Parents....

More and more, this excursion proves to be a font of knowledge and new experiences, particularly in the spiritual realm. For you see, I had an encounter with a fox spirit recently.

She had been married to a human peasant in his lifetime, abandoning her ethereal form to be with him. Unfortunately, his death and a theft of a symbolic pendant had driven her to sorrow, seeking aid against those who possessed the pendant. Thus beseeched, I acquired Yasuki-sama's blessings and the aid of some of our ashigaru and followed her to the thieves in question, a band of ronin residing in the nearby forests.

Distastefully, I had to accept his requests of financial support to receive the pendant, as he and his men were intent on heading south to join our clan in fighting on the Wall. We parted ways afterwards, and the fox spirit gave me thanks and offered aid if called upon in future meeting. In such dark times, such support and friendship will be needed I fear...

Your Son,
Sosuke

Letter 03

Honourable Parents....

Monasteries are interesting. Shinden Osano-wo and its monks to be specific, are very interesting. We spent some time there on our way to the Dragon lands, and I had chance to spar and train with a monk called Shirou-san underneath a rainstorm. Their method of beseeching Hida Osano-wo to strike at them was inspiring... but ultimately the close strike we had when we were sparring was more than enough for me. I did not sustain any burns or injuries from the strike, though it might have been worth it for what I think I saw...

No matter. It is irrelevant to ponder what I may or may not have seen.

I spoke further with Hiruma Shasa after the spars outside with Shirou-san, more in regards to her position within the expedition and how she might be of use to Yasuki-sama. We came to something of a reasonable conclusion in regards to this, and I will broach the subject with him so as not to offend. Overall, a far better end-result than previous discussions...

Also, Shirou-san has elected to join us on our travels north, with Yasuki-sama's welcome. I admit that I look forward to his company on the open road, as he has already proven a most enjoyable presence. Next, we go the Scorpion lands.

Your Son,
Sosuke

[x] Question her about the tattoo.

Agreeing with gman. Also, we kinda pissed off the guy who was in charge of the last attack in the shadowlands, could be why we have cultists gunning for us.

[x] Etitiquette to check if asking is alright.
-[X] If yes follow all procedures but ask about the tattoo.
-[X] If no just request to return to the castle.

[x] Question her about the tattoo.

Well, if is just Kyosuke we're fine. He considers a 17 year old crab samurai a real thread.

OK, based on what I'm looked up earlier about L5R, this looks like the emblem of the Spider Clan, which was apparently formed in cannon when the dark lord took over the shadow-lands, and proposed a peace treaty with Rokugan. However that never happened in this timeline, which begs the question of what exactly is going on.

[x] Question her about the tattoo.

[x] Question her about the tattoo.

"Have you seen this tattoo before?" you ask, moving a little closer to inspect where Mataru is holding the woman's mouth open. It is much better done than the other tattoos on the gang members arms. "It looks very different from the others."

"Yes, I've seen this before," Asami says, crossing her arms. She doesn't say anything else, instead just glaring at you. She's obviously irritated, and you think she's taking it out on you somewhat because of your involvement in this matter.

Which isn't really fair, all told. It's not like you meant for this to happen, and you were just defending yourself in any case. You don't want to be the outlet for this woman's aggravation over this incident. You frown at her, but hold yourself back from speaking.

You can see this from her side, though it does little to restrain your own annoyance. You're from another Clan, at the center of a giant mess in the middle of a celebration. Even still, a little cooperation would be appreciated. This stonewalling is getting all of you nowhere.

"If I might beg your indulgence, Magistrate," Shirou says, bowing to Asami. "Might you please illuminate us on the nature of this marking?"

Asami glances at him. "Fine, then," she says with a sigh. "We noticed them about a month ago, infiltrating the various gangs. They're subtle and quiet, but they've been making motions. We've tried to capture a few of them to figure out what their goals are, but they always kill themselves when it looks like they will be cornered."

"It seems you have one alive," Shasa says, motioning toward the bound man. "Though perhaps not for much longer, if he's not treated soon."

"That is true," Asami says. "Though the presence of the Taint complicates things." She scowls and rubs the back of her head, then looks back to you. She looks pensive, as if considering something. "You all came in with the traveling diplomat, yes? Yasuki Goro-sama?"

"We did," you say. "And we would like to return to him soon, if that is all right. He should be informed of this."

"No doubt," Asami says, her frown finally fading into a smile. "I wish to meet with him too, because with his permission I hope to co-opt you all into rooting out the rest of these scum and dragging them into the light of day."

You blink in surprise. This is… Well, it's a bit unusual. Yes, she is a magistrate so she can co-opt the help of those with lesser status to aid her. But to outright state her intentions thusly? Well, it's quite a bit different from the usual. And again, you are of another Clan.

"While I am always happy to be of aid against the Tainted," you say, not entirely sure what to say to this. "I must admit it's a little strange you would desire our involvement in your Clan's security."

"It's your issue as well," Asami says. "And I hope Yasuki-sama sees it the same way. After all, these people went out of their way to attack you. You were the target." She uncrosses her arms and spreads them wide, taking in the bloody street and the corpses lying about. "Like it or not, you are already involved."

[] Agree, if Yasuki-sama is willing.
[] Refuse, and tell her you will encourage Yasuki-sama to wash his hands of this.
[] Write in.

[X] Agree, if Yasuki-sama is willing.

Don't really see why we'd say no. Does anybody with better Feudal Japan Social-fu know if there's a blatant insult in this to us or not?

[x] Agree, if Yasuki-sama is willing.

We can help Asami, for is not considered an insult (actually, rejecting it would certainly be), but since Yasuki is our superior, he has the last word regarding this. Remember, the word of aomeone from our clan weights more than the request from someone who belongs to another clan.

Why do I get the feeling she is killing off two birds with one stone. She gets someone to hunt down these tainted fools and whittle down their numbers without actually believing we can do it where their resources were not able to in a month's time while possibly giving disgrace or possible shame to another clan as some part of much larger and somewhat convoluted plot all without ever having to lift a finger that directly implicates her as the cause?
