You blink. Do you want anything from life? What an odd question. Of course you just want to serve the Clan honorably and do your duty. After all, what else is there to life? A Samurai's duty is to serve. Without that, you are nothing.
You open your mouth to answer, but then close it again. Shasa already knows this. She must, for she is Samurai as well. Since that is the case, she is likely expecting something different than the obvious answer. Could she be speaking of what you want aside from doing your duty?
That makes you frown. You've honestly not given this much thought. You are only seventeen, after all. You've not spent even two years yet as a proper adult. What do you know of dreams and aspirations? That is something for when you're older, surely.
But is that really the best way to handle your life, to answer Shasa's question? Truthfully, you don't know. But what you do know is that you're not one for deception or half-truths. Shasa asked you something, and you will give her an honest answer.
I suppose in the abstract, I wish to fulfill my duty as a Crab, but that's not quite the same thing as what you're asking is it?" you say at last, give voice to your thoughts as best you can. "What do I want out of life? Same as any man I suppose, to live well, to die even better."
"Is that truly all?" Shasa asks. "Please forgive me if I overstep myself, Sosuke-san, but even Samurai have aspirations beyond just their duty." She pauses a moment, frowning. "If you don't want to answer, then I will understand. I am merely curious about you."
"I will take a wife at some point and I hope that we get along well together," you say. "And that our children do well... but dreams of the future of my position, always seemed such hazy things. The Crab live swiftly and in the moment, for we do not often last long enough to plan out our course."
You tilt your head slightly, and give her a grin. In response she quirks an eyebrow, obviously wondering what you're getting at. Well, it's not like you know for certain either. Still, it is best to speak from the heart about these things.
Still, all things being equal," you continue, your grin turning into a wistful smile. "I suppose I like this sort of thing, travelling with good companions like yourself and serving on the Wall. I hope to be able to do both."
"So you wish to stand on the Wall, but also explore the world?" Shasa asks, her befuddlement turning into amusement. "It seems to me you want two different things, Sosuke-san."
"Maybe," you say. "Or maybe not. I think the one can provide service for the Wall in many ways, and bring support with more than just being atop its battlements." You give a little shrug. "I will serve on the Wall itself, or serve the Wall elsewhere. In either case, I will serve."
"Perhaps it is so," Shasa says, nodding. She smiles at you. "You have a very deep view of such things, Sosuke-san. I must admit I am impressed."
"It is nothing impressive, Shasa-san," you respond, blushing a little under her praise. "I've honestly not given it much thought before, so I just said what came to mind. In any event, I hope that answers your question."
"It does indeed, Sosuke-san," Shasa says, giving you a bow before turning back ahead. "It does indeed."
You bow back to her, and can tell that this conversation is pretty much finished. Shasa's face is inscrutable, but you think you see the barest edges of a smile. Whatever you said must have been to her liking, in one way or another. You honestly can't see how, but then you've only known Shasa for a few weeks. Enough to be more than strangers, perhaps, but still not close friends. More time will be required for that, and to learn all of her little quirks.
You look back ahead, and see you've come a little closer to the looming figure of Kyuden Bayushi. It is beautiful and ominous, and different from all the buildings you are used to. It is a fortress, yes, but it is less… stocky, you might say the word is. More spread out. It almost gives the appearance of weakness, but you are certain that is an illusion. No fortress, properly maintained, is weak. The Crab know that better than anyone.
Perhaps that makes the castle your first encounter with Scorpion trickery?
Regardless, it is still some time yet before you arrive. You have the opportunities before you, chances to better learn about those you travel with. All you have to do is make a choice.
