Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Just so everyone is aware of relatively recent history, what was left of Otosan-Uchi has actually been taken back. The area has been mostly cleansed of corruption, but even after twenty years there's not much in the way of population. Certainly no one has been making any great effort to move the Empire's capital back to its ancestral home, at any rate.

[x]"The past is just that. The past. We can only hope to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors and strive to avoid them. Otosan-Uchi was an unparalleled jewel but we can always give rise to something similar in the future."

This is not Exalted. There is no spirit of Otosan-Uchi, reincarnation does not factor into this at all...also trying to lecture a Dragon on spiritual matters seems doomed to failure.

Yeah, I'm not stoked to keep on reminding Sosuke of reincarnation in any topic right now.

Fair enough.

Hey everyone! I hate to bother, but is there any chance I could get a few more votes? I just want a solid consensus so I can update the Quest tonight.

This is pretty unrelated but I just realized that if anyone was to ever manage to retain part of their past life through reincarnation it makes sense that it would be Yakamo. Both because of how his themes tie in with death and rebirth and because we've probably got the weirdest soul to ever reincarnate, hell Daigotsu's soul probably has more in common with the average Rokugani then us!

At the heart of our being lies the soul of The Qatol who slithered upon Ningen-do when it was still young. That Naga demigod who acted as champion, lawmaker, uniter and savior of the Naga and who attempted to conquer death itself. The being which first revealed the Akasha in all of its glory and revealed how the Naga were all connected. He acted as champion for the Bright Eye and fought against the Nothing itself when it tried to claim the Naga, a battle which our soul likely still bears the scars from. The Qatol would later be reincarnated/merged as/with Hida Yakamo. Then we have the part where things get screwy.

Hida Yakamo would have a relatively normal childhood for a samurai, and yet he would inevitably come into contact with the foul taint of Jigoku. Giving his name to an Oni and replacing his hand with a claw the great soul of The Qatol seemed destined to fall into the filth of the Shadowlands. Yet Hida Yakamo would not only cure his Taint but become a living exemplar of purity, replacing his claw with the Jade Hand and helping to strike down Fu Leng on The Second Day of Thunder. All the while the soul of the Kami Hida would haunt him and provide him aid, further muddling the spiritual waters. Eventually Yakamo would be tortured to death but he would not go on to Meido but would instead be shepherded by the soul of his brother Sukune to remain in the realm of the living. From here we have the soul of a demigod who had touched Akasha and who was scarred through interaction with the Nothing and shot through with tendrils of the realm of Jigoku which were then purified as the soul of Hida watched on, this soul would then remain in the realm of the living far after its original body had died. It's telling about the state of Rokugan that this still wasn't the weirdest thing to happen with a soul, but then things took a turn for the strange.

Yakamo would be resurrected and would again take up the fight against The Lying Darkness as The Qatol had so very long ago, yet this rebirth would only the be prelude to his glorious ascension. When Amaterasu committed Jigai out of grief over the death of her husband Yakamo acted as her second and as a result ascended as the Lord Sun via the express permission of Amaterasu herself. Yakamo would serve as Lord Sun through the decades ahead, maintaing the Celestial Balance on the whole, bar one situation where he disrupted it when he acted as the patron of the Jade Dragon. Yakamo would serve with distinction and when Fu Leng invaded Tengoku he would fight against the Oni he gave his name to so long ago, though they were evenly matched until Fu Leng was once more cast down. Soon after Yakamo would join the Legion of the Dead to fight against Iuchiban in defense of Rokugan, being cast into the Realm of Thwarted Destiny and managing to triumph over its trials during this. However soon after disaster would strike.

Depending on who you ask the Jade Dragon's decision to turn on her patron and usurp his position was either a justified act which restored the natural order to its rightful place or was a henious betrayal, regardless of the morality however a coup would be thrown in Tengoku and Yakamo would fall once more to Ningen-do. With his last words he would give warning to his kinsmen of the trials to come, serving his duty to the very end. Decades later he would be reborn as Hiruma Sosuke.

So in essence we are a Snek Demigod Lawyer God-King Crab Champion Sun Ghost who bears the touch of the Nothing, Jigoku and Tengoku. I'm reasonably sure that's too many splats for one character to have but Sosuke somehow gets it to work.

Huh. The naga aspect of this had not occurred to me, but if we happen to run into any, that's going to be pretty significant for us/them.

We are their King Arthur, their Hammurabi, their Qin Shi Huang, their Abraham, Mohammed and Christ. Without the Qatol their wouldn't be a Naga as we know it today, there might not even be the races who comprised it left. So hey if the whole "dutiful samurai" thing goes poorly we can always go become God Emperor of the scalies. :V
Okay just to say this now.
No we are not waifuing a Naga.

Dat snakeskin. Unf.

You can't help but scowl, though you quickly smooth our your features. Hanabi's words bring to your mind the nature of reincarnation, of cycles going on and on without end. It is… not the most pleasant of topics for you at this moment, not so soon after confirming the truth of your soul from the Elemental Master of Fire.

A glance toward Hanabi reveals the woman is lost in her thoughts, staring toward the Imperial Palace and hardly touching her ikayaki. The Dragon Samurai seems troubled by something, though by exactly what you cannot say. Whatever it is, it seems to have overcome her obvious infatuation of you if she is looking elsewhere.

Shirou and Himawari notice the change in her as well, turning their attention to the distracted woman. Himawari's brow furrows in obvious concern, while Shirou's eyes narrow. Neither says anything, however, both seemingly as lost as yourself with how to react to Hanabi's sudden shift in mood.

The awkward silence continues for several moments more, gathering like oppressive clouds. It clashes with the cheer and energy of the market, making your group stand out like a stone amongst rapids. The growing melancholy drags your thoughts back toward matters you'd rather avoid…

So you decide to simply press on and hope for the best.

"The past is just that. The past," you say at last, filling your words with a conviction you're not entirely certain you truly feel. "We can only hope to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors and strive to avoid them. Otosan-Uchi was an unparalleled jewel but we can always give rise to something similar in the future."

"I suppose that is true," Hanabi says, her voice just above a whisper so you have to strain yourself to make out what she's saying. "But it is still not the original… I suppose nothing can be, even if what is ruined should come back in a new form."

"Such is just the nature of things," Shirou says, giving Hanabi a gentle smile. "We build upon what we have learned from the past, and hopefully create a brighter world from that knowledge."

"He speaks wisdom," Himawari says. "We must grow from the past, embrace its teachings, but not be shackled by it. Only then will we truly honor what has come before."

"Yes… There might be something to be said for that." Hanabi shakes her head, as if throwing something off, and smiles at you. "I'm sorry, Sosuke-san. I guess I was just lost in gloomy thoughts."

"There's no need to apologize, Hanabi-san," you reply, waving a hand toward the market around you. "Come, let us see what more there is to experience in this wondrous city."

"Yes!" Hanabi says before taking a bite of her ikayaki, chewing the grilled squid rapidly before continuing. "I've never been to Toshi Ranbo before, so I want to see as much as I can before we have to head out!"

"That's something I believe we can all get behind," you say, smiling at her. You notice her blush in response, but carry on without commenting on it. "We can't venture too far, but surely what we can find here will be wondrous enough to tell stories about."

[Jk] "Now, if we only go down this dark ally....... Damm it! There aren't even muggers in this city! I thought I'd have stumbled over three threats to the Empire by now!"

[X] Go to the clothing store.

Still not sure why, but I think going cloths shopping will be more interesting then the jewelry.
