[X] Remain silent.
No, there is nothing else you should be doing right now but standing watch. You took it upon yourself to handle another Samurai's duty, and you will not dishonor the responsibility inherent to that. It was by your actions that you were placed in this position, so it is only proper you act accordingly.
Himawari, for her part, does not try to engage you in conversation. She instead simply stands by your side keeping watch. It is a companionable silence, and you appreciate that the Lion Samurai is not attempting to talk with you. It isn't that you do not appreciate her company, of course, but rather that you would prefer to remain on guard. Himawari obviously understands this, and you both hold watch together.
The Mirumoto still with you also does not speak. Granted, he didn't before either. His brow is furrowed as he observes the Ronin, and you get the impression he's not entirely pleased by this state of affairs. Whatever ire he holds seems to be directed at the Ronin rather than yourself, however, and he dedicates his entire attention to them. Considering the report you just received, you can't say you approve.
A keen eye means as much to the difference between life and death as any weapon. This is something any warrior knows, but one the Crab have great experience with. Strong arms and bodies built like solid stone are useless if an enemy passes by or takes a warrior unawares. Focusing too much on one angle of attack merely leaves you open for another, and it only takes a few seconds for a life to come to an abrupt end.
Something you know all too well…
"I do not suppose you would be willing to chat while we wait?" the Ronin asks in his thick accent, leaning forward in his saddle. "I must admit I am curious as to why a Crab Samurai is this far north." He waits several moments as you do not reply, instead maintaining your vigilance watching both the Ronin and the night. "Ah, so it will be like that then. I suppose I should have expected as much."
A quarter of an hour later sees the return of the Mirumoto guardsman, along with an older Samurai with gray at his temples and beard. Despite his age, however, his stride is strong and his wide shoulders speak of well-honed muscles beneath his armor. He is flanked by two more Bushi, and is obviously a man of some importance.
The man is likely Kitsuki Ryojiro's Chui, and would be in general command of the army beneath his Lord's direction. He holds himself with absolute confidence, something born only when a person is completely sure their orders will be carried out to the letter. You've seen many with his bearing during your time on the Wall. It is only with men like this that any army could ever hope to run smoothly.
"I am Mirumoto Hideki," the man says as inclines his head ever so slightly to the Ronin. "I was told you have papers to show me?"
"Indeed," the Ronin says, pulling out a few sheets of folded paper. "Everything should be in order."
The silent Mirumoto takes the papers and hands them to his superior, who looks them over carefully. Hideki spends several minutes going over the words and seals set onto pages, then does so again. Finally, he nods and hands them over to be given back to the Ronin.
"Everything does appear to be legitimate," Hideki says. "Follow me. My subordinate told me some of what you said, and I would know more of these things scuttling about in the dark." He turns to you and gives a shallow bow. "My thanks for your assistance Hiruma-san, Kitsu-san."
"It was no trouble, Mirumoto-sama," you reply, bowing low. "I was happy to help."
"As was I, Mirumoto-sama," Himawari says, bowing as well.
He nods. "You should get some sleep soon. We'll be marching early in the morning toward town." Waving a hand, he motions for the Ronin to follow him. "Which means you five need to come with me. The quicker we get this handled the quicker we can all get some proper rest."
You watch after them as they go, the horsemen stepping off their mounts and leading them in by hand. As well, you notice the Mirumoto from before joining his silent companion to resume their watch. A hint of a smile tugs at the corners of your lips as what was once a disturbance and possible liability instead changes back into smooth, efficient order.
It's a small thing compared to the big picture, but isn't life made up of small things? In any event, it feels good to have played some small part in resolving that matter before it could get ugly. Allies cannot afford to fight with each other when enemies are about. There will be time later for confrontation in the days to come, enough to satiate any Samurai's thirst for battle.
"Sleep might not be the worst idea, Hiruma-san," Himawari says, also looking at the group as they make their way into the camp and vanish behind tents. "Though if you would prefer, I would not be averse to spending some time in conversation."
