Alright, votes locked!

Ah, so you come from the noble defenders of the Kaiu Wall! The Crab Clan is made of proud, fierce people! Some would say too fierce, that they have lost the refinement expected of Samurai in pursuit of their duty. But as a Crab, you scoff at such notions. Manners are all well and good, but you have a war to fight! And you know, down to your bones, that the war never ends. You have lived under the shadow of Jigoku, the realm of Hell, your entire life. Oni and Goblins and the Tainted are not mysteries to you, not the boogeymen they are for the rest of the Empire. They are a living, breathing reality, and they are coming for your blood.

Best be sure to spill theirs first.

But a Clan is merely the first, most intrinsic part of what makes a Samurai! There is more to you, young one. Oh, so much more. And we must find out exactly what in order to proceed! From what Family do you come, and at what School were you taught? This must be revealed if we are to get a proper picture of you, young Samurai! So please, let yourself be known.

Agility is the attribute that allows you to hit things, so it's quite good. Strength is the attribute that helps you damage things after you hit them.

Here's how the system works. It's roll and keep. You combine attributes and skills together when you make rolls. Here's an example. You have the Kenjutsu at 3 and Agility at 3. You would roll six d10s because you're combining the numbers. However, you only get to keep an amount of dice equal to the relevant attribute, in this case Agility. All rolls, aside from pure attribute rolls, work this way.

Are we limited to the schools of the family we choose, or can we choose outside? And are we limited to the basic schools?

You must choose from one of the Basic Schools unless you somehow, magically, meet the prerequisites for the Advanced Schools. I don't believe this is possible right out of character generation. However, you are not limited to your family's school.

Speaking of which, everyone should think up some names with their votes. Your family name is, of course, already chosen, but you have a choice for your given name.

A hard decision, but I think I'll go with

[X] The Kaiu Family
[X] The Kaiu Engineer School

We build the Great Carpenter Wall, the greatest edifice ever devised by humans, in mere 73 days and maintain it to this day. We produce the equipment that protects our brethren in battle.
Our cousins the Hida lead us the fight against the spawn of the Shadowlands, but it is our job to temper their fierceness with caution. We are the foundation that allows the mighty Crab to withstand.

[X] Hiruma Toyotomi
[X] The Kaiu Engineer School

Being able to avoid damage while dealing massive damage of my own has always been my style, and Hiruma fit that to a tee. I know we're not limited to our family's schools, but I want to go with this.

Feel free to debate the various reasons why you want your selected family/school combinations to be the winner. I'll not be calling votes till this evening at the earliest. More likely I'll just let the vote run on till tomorrow. So have fun!

The Hida family and styles are pretty straightforward, and are thus predictable, which is why I'm not going for them. However, they are undoubtedly effective, as evidenced by being the direct decedents of their clan's founder. So I wanted to go with their cousins, who avoid their enemies attacks while dealing their own, the Hiruma. I don't want to go Kaiu because being an engineer seems underwhelming for me.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the combat abilities. L5R isn't normally a very combat focused game because even experienced characters can be killed with a few blows.

I would find it interesting to play a Kaiu engineer because they are the epitome of why the Crab are special: In a world dominated by tradition and honor they are pragmatists. They will do what needs to be done, even if there isn't much honor in doing it. They are planners and artisans, craftsmen and engineers, and they are the best at what they do.

It is also a question of status: At one point we will probably have to interact with other clans, and then a Kaiu engineer has the advantage. The Hida and the Hiruma are seen as half barbarians, the Kuni are just creepy and the Yasuki are regarded like used cars salesmen. The Kaiu though, they are different. Everybody knows that the Kaiu are the finest engineers and smiths in Rokugan and that makes them respected.

[x] Kuni Family

Because then at least it's our job to probe into things man was not meant to know, and we'll be a bit better prepared

[x] Kuni Witch Hunters

This lets us go all over Rokugan much more easily and gives us a means to well take down most people if we have to. We are the watchers in the night who fight back against the blood mages (Who are all evil and crazy) and Shadowlands Infiltrators. Plus it means that the common people love us.

what about the Toritaka? They're a part of Crab.

Well, this isn't exactly true. Actually, it's better to say that it's only kind of true.

L5R is a game where politics and debate can turn into a duel within the span of a minute, and an investigation can get bloody very quickly. Not to mention the occasional war. However, it's also true that if you play your cards right you can avoid combat about seven times out of ten. And it's certainly possible to make a Kaiu Engineer capable in a fight, though it's a bit more difficult than a school primarily directed toward battle.

Also, y'all will be using the health rule of Earth Ring times 3 instead of the standard 2 for health, so your character will be a bit more robust than she/he would in a bog standard game. Just letting everyone know.
