Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I don't think we know her well enough to pry into her personal affairs. If we run into her again after the plan succeeds, we might have a chance depending on how things go. Until that happens - or Gman/Sirrocco come up with a better bandwagon - I'll go with this.

[X] Don't bring it up.

[x] Spend some time in calm and friendly conversation. Share a few stories - keep it relatively light, but if there's an implication of "no, really, the Shadowlands are coming" then that's not a bad thing. See if you can get her to share a few stories of her own. Having a friendly face to share stories with for a while may help take the edge off her desperation.
[x] (Assuming your return trip will bring you back through here) tell her that when you return from the Dragon, if her situation has not changed, you will come find her again and fill her in on what's happened and what the situation is. You still have every expectation that the Dragon will understand the situation and react accordingly, but if not, then at least she will have the answer of the Dragon, rather than that of the Dragonfly.
[x] Return to your quarters early enough to get a decent night's sleep.

Gives her a reason to not do something foolish just yet, and some emotional resources to help her out with that.

I apologize for the delay in the next installment. My head is aching and I'm having a hard time concentrating, so I'm just going to go to bed. I'll try for a double update tomorrow if I can, and if I get enough votes.

I'm very sorry for the spotty update schedule I've been having these last few months. I know I've promised a minimum of four a week and I've been failing to meet that standard. I'll try my best to do better.

Don't worry about any of that!
We can wait - and if you're feeling crappy you will not enjoy running this and it HAS to be fun for you and not a chore.

[x] Sirrocco

You sigh and lean back, massaging the bridge of your nose. A slight pressure is building up behind your eyes, the beginnings of a headache. It's not all that surprising, considering your journey. It always seems to be weeks of monotonous travel broken up by frantic activity.

Much like Shirou was getting at earlier, in fact. A chuckle bubbles out from your lips, and Shinjo Wanli drops her hand to look at you. She blinks a few times, then quirks an eyebrow. Her confusion seems to have overtaken her anger, for you see her shoulders relax as she leans back in her own chair.

"You find something amusing, Hiruma-san?"

"Hmm? Oh, nothing about the current issue," you say quickly. "At least, not directly."

"I think you're going to have to explain," Shinjo Wanli says, her tone only slightly dangerous as she leans forward.

"I was remembering the words of a friend of mine," you respond. "The monk from when we first met. He commented that I always seem to get myself involved in interesting events." You chuckle again. "It seems he was right."

"Interesting events?" Wanli asks, relaxing. "That sounds like a story." She waves a hand at a servant, and soon enough there's a small bottle of sake on the table. She pours you a cup and hands it over. "And stories should be told over drink."

"It's really not so complex," you respond, taking the cup but refraining from partaking any alcohol. "We've been traveling for two months across the Empire, and most of it was quite peaceful. A few… instances aside, anyway."

"Like what?" Shinjo Wanli asks, pouring herself a cup. "Speak, please. I've been starved for good company."

"Well," you say, rubbing the back of your head sheepishly. "There was this one time I helped a Kitsune recover a token of her lost love."

"Kitsune?" Wanli asks. "You mean the Family of the Mantis?"

"Well, no," you respond. "I mean an actual Kitsune. She had fallen in love with a monk and married him, but he had died. So she was awaiting his rebirth with a token she had given him, which some Ronin had taken. I retrieved it for her."

Wanli blinks. "Huh… Alright, that's certainly something."

"Then there was that time Shirou-san and I survived a lightning strike…" you begin.

"Wait, what?"

"Shirou-san wanted to show me how Monks of Osano-wo express their worship," you say, taking a light sip of the sake. "It really comes down to challenging the Fortune to strike you."

"And he did?" Wanli asks, motioning with a hand for you to continue.

"Well, I can't speak for what a Fortune does or does not do," you answer. "The actions of Heaven are beyond my reckoning. Still, the lightning did strike not five feet from where we stood. Sent the both of us flying."

"I see," Shinjo Wanli says, taking a sip of her drink. She sets the cup down on the table with a light thunk and pours herself some more. "You certainly weren't joking, Hiruma-san. You've experienced quite a bit on your travels."

"And then there was that time we discovered an infiltration of Tainted in Scorpion lands," you say, taking another sip of your sake. "That was a rough encounter, I must admit."

Shinjo Wanli ceases her pouring and looks up at you. "Forgive me, Hiruma-san, but I'm beginning to think you're having some humor at my expense."

"Every word is true, I assure you," you respond. "A Lost One had snuck his way into their territory and was tainting people, slowly building a subversive force." You lean forward, your lips drawn into a tight line as you settle your elbows on the table. "War is coming, Shinjo-san. That's why I'm here amongst the Dragon, because they have discovered so much Jade in recent years. The Crab must be ready to fight."

The Unicorn Samurai stares at you for several moments, her expression unreadable. Then, after almost a minute, Wanli nods. She raises her cup to you, nodding. You, in turn, raise yours. The edge of your cups clink softly, and you both drink.

"Dangerous times, then," Wanli says as she sets her cup down. "For the Crab to journey so far to prepare."

"It is only necessary in order to fulfill our duty," you say back. "Shinjo-san, I want you to know that if your situation with the Dragon remains unchanged, I will try to come back this way and at least tell you what happens. I expect the Dragon will call for you, but even if they don't you'll at least have an answer from them and not the Dragonfly."

"Such kindness you show me," Wanli says, shaking her head. "I'm not sure I rightly understand you, Hiruma-san, but I'm grateful all the same."

"I'm just someone who tries to live as best he can, Shinjo-san," you say before rising. You bow to her. "A good evening to you."

"And to you, Hiruma-san," she responds, rising and bowing back.

You return to the castle without incident, making your way to your rooms as the sun begins to set beyond the horizon. It's early enough yet, and there are still things you could do… But the day has been draining and you're honestly looking forward to an early night's sleep.

That in mind, you hang up your armor and weapons and slip into a sleeping robe. The room is not the most ostentatious, but you really don't require much. The bed is large enough to hold you and seems comfortable, and that's all you truly need.

So you lie down, close your eyes and hope for a peaceful rest.

o\O/o
You are floating in a dark forest, illuminated only by the light of the moon. This light does not banish the darkness, however, but instead seems to make the shadows grow longer. Those slivers of gloom seem almost like fingers, grasping limbs reaching out to capture anything that comes close.

A man in heavy armor is sitting amongst the trees, very carefully out of the light. He's large, taller than you are by a few inches. A tetsubo rests by his side, and at his hip there's a large sword that doesn't look at all like a katana. The blade is too wide for that, and too curved.
"They were fools to reject me, fools to deny our proper place," he says in a deep, echoing voice. "The Empire is weak, and we are strong. We were the only ones truly deserving to rule."

The darkness around the man… shivers, that's the only way you can describe it. It undulates like a living thing, settling around the sitting figure like a cloak. It caresses him, whispers to him with words just barely beyond the edge of your hearing. There is too much depth to that darkness, and you take your gaze away lest you lose yourself within its expanse forever.

Instead, you focus on the man. He has lifted his tetsubo up now, examining it. It is dark, like the rest of him. It is so dark, in fact, that it stands out amongst the rest of the blackness by being almost the color of pitch. It glints dully in the shadows, and you wonder idly what it could be made of.

"And their weakness will damn us all," the man whispers. He stand up, going to his full, looming height. "They are gathering in the south, the old enemies. Shatter their cities, but they will still return." He takes a deep breath and shakes his head. "They must be annihilated. It's the only way. We must cleanse their filth from the face of the world entirely."

Dozens of eyes and mouths gleam within the darkness behind the man, as if forming from the shadows themselves. You can't tell exactly if it is one creature or several, for your eyes cannot pierce the gloom. Many of those mouths seem too wide, and those eyes too bright. They don't shine with reflected light, however. Rather, their shine comes from darkness so intense that it becomes almost like they are glowing. It is so acute that it the murk of night is nothing in comparison.

"We must prepare," the man says. "And when we are finished with the old enemies… Well, there are other grudges to settle."

o\O/o
The light of dawn stirs you from your slumber. You yawn and scratch your head, your thoughts coming slowly. Oddly enough, your limbs feel heavy and your mind trapped within a fog. Considering how long you slept, you should be well rested. This certainly isn't the case, though.

Could the dream have been the cause? It was certainly disturbing, being so cloaked in darkness, but it was just a dream. You were just worried after the news Shinjo Wanli revealed to you. What else could it be?

You look out the window and see the glow of the rising dawn. Your caravan will be getting on the move soon. The Dragon Lands proper await you, along with the hopeful completion of your mission. All that remains is this final step.

[x] Tell someone about your dream (Shirou)

Well he is the only one that knows the full weirdness that follows us. Maybe he has an insight.

[x] Tell someone about your dream (Shirou)

So... assuming that our dreams remain as prophetic as always, Moto Shinichiro thinks to ride against the Shadowlands? Given the influence of the Shadow Dragon, I somehow doubt his riding would be good for Rokugan regardless.

[x] Tell someone about your dream (Shirou)

You get up and stretch out your muscles, working the lingering soreness from your limbs. Shirou is quite eager about any form of training, even when it involves him punching you repeatedly to enhance your endurance. It certainly seems to work, though, at least in line with your previous training.

The dream still haunts your mind as you stretch your legs, limbering yourself up for the day. Normally you would find some solace in your morning rituals, but you simply cannot shake what you saw. What did anything you saw actually mean? It was all vague and circumspect, nothing at all direct.

Just like your previous dreams about Kohsa.

You inhale sharply and close your eyes, fighting back a tide of nausea. It takes you a few moments, but you push back the bile and regain your focus. You are calm and composed, the picture of what a Samurai should be and aspire to. Then you wince as the cloth of your robe rubs up against the bruises on your ribs.

"I need to talk with someone," you mutter, gingerly touching your side. "I can't keep living with all this strangeness."

As you poke your tender ribs, a thought occurs. Shirou has been with you for most of your journey, and he's always accepted it without issue or complaint. He's also a monk, which means he might have some insight on what exactly your dreams mean. Sure, he's of the more martial orders, but he at least might know something.

You nod to yourself. This seems as good a plan as any, and you've a little time to speak with your friend before you caravan ventures toward Shiro Kitsuki. You slip into a proper kimono and put on your armor. That finished, you pack up the rest of your possessions and head out.

Shirou is waiting by the wagon as servants prepare it for travel, as you knew he would be. The monk is never one to stand idle, always willing to help out with even the most menial of labors. He looks up from the luggage he's stowing onboard as you approach, smiling wide. He bows to you, and you bow back.

"Good morning, Sosuke-sama," he says as he rises. "I hope this day finds you well."

"I'm not sure if it does, Shirou-san," you answer. "But I hope your morning is going without incident."

The monk frowns. "Is something the matter, Sosuke-sama?"

"I'm not entirely certain," you respond, motioning to the side. "Could we speak a bit more privately?"

Shirou brow furrows, but he nods is agreement. The two of you walk away from both the wagon and the entrance, circling around the great spire that is Kyuden Tonbo. Finally, after you're sure no one is around to eavesdrop, you stop. There are still people, of course. That is unavoidable in a castle of this size. None are so close they could overhear, however, and that gives you a measure of security.

"Sosuke-sama, you seem troubled," Shirou says. "Please, can you tell me what is the matter?"

"I've been having… dreams, Shirou-san," you answer. "Strange dreams. Just last night I dreamed about a man in shadow speaking of fighting old enemies and making good on grudges. The darkness was too… deep I guess is the right word. And within that blackness I saw eyes and teeth that shone from being even darker than the night itself, rather than light."

Shirou blinks. "That is certainly disturbing, Sosuke-sama. Have you had dreams like this before?"

You shift and place a hand on your arm, frowning. You don't want to answer. You don't want to dredge up anything that reminds you of the cave, but you have no choice. You're committed to this course now, to sharing this thing that has confused you ever since it started months ago. That decision is meaningless if you do not follow through.

Your lungs fill with air as you take in a deep breath, fighting back the sensation of unease that always seems to strike you when you think about anything relating to your battle in the cave. It always pushes against your control, confuses your senses as the past infringes upon the present within your mind. Even still, you cannot run from it. Not now.

"I dreamed of Kohsa twice" you whisper. "Weeks before we ever fought him. I dreamed of him and the Oni, though I did not recognize its shape." You pause, rubbing a hand over your face as you collect yourself. "I didn't think much of it at the time."

"I see," Shirou says, rubbing his chin. "And when did you have this dream?"

"At Shinden Osano-wo," you respond. "After we endured the lightning."

Shirou nods, but remains silent. He closes his eyes and crosses his arms, taking a meditative posture despite that he is standing. You tilt your head at his conduct, not sure what to make of his actions. It doesn't surprise you that Shirou knows how to meditate standing up, considering his calling, but you're a little confused as to why he's doing it right now.

"Sosuke-sama," he says finally, opening his eyes. "Have you considered that perhaps you have the gift of foresight? That maybe your dreams are visions of things happening in the present, or even of the future itself?"

[x] "No...that's...that's something that happens to shugenja, or great lords and heroes. I know that given what happened I might be a...hero" it feels wrong to say that, but evidence is evidence. "But I don't think of myself that way."

[X] "No, I had not. Hmmm."
-Short Pause-
"I hope that the dream I had about the flute and the army of mice doesn't happen. That was the night before."

Sousuke totally has the Hero keyword.

hmmm... thinking about it...

Base version: 2 force, 2 chi, 2 personal honor, samurai. "Bow Sousuke and one of your artisans. Sousuke gains a +1/+1 armor token"

Experienced version: 3 force, 2 chi, 3 personal honor, samurai hero yojimbo. "When entering battle with Kiruma Sousuke, Target enemy shadowlands character. That character must move to the same battle, unbowing if necessary."

Exp2 version: 3 force, 3 chi, 4 personal honor, samurai hero yojimbo storyteller. "Target enemy holding. Enemy may bow holding, providing you the gold and gaining 1 honor. If they do not, they lose 2 honor."

A pretty clear example of how the focus of characters can change with different editions, the exp2 version of Sousuke was shoehorned into a court-related role after players with the new Yasuki deck kept grabbing him as an affordable 3-honor character for all the things that dishonor decks love to have 3-honor characters for. He wasn't a courtier, but yojimbo was useful, and he could still be used as a 3-force blocker in a pinch - especially if your enemy happened to be playing shadowlands. Of course, the next edition looks like they're going to get rid of the idea of a dedicated yasuki deck altogether, so expect him to swerve back to being an anti-shadowlands bruiser of some sort.

@Winged Knight Going back and rereading the earlier updates is kind of weird. Sosuke's speech patterns are so much different then what they are now.

I'm becoming increasingly curious as to what exactly our mysterious admirer is. Amaterasu is dead and the Jade Dragon is male, so neither of those seem to fit. But whoever she is, she's definitely divine and probably associated with jade in some capacity (the green color scheme and the ability to casually repulse the minions of Jigoku would seem to bear that out).

If it isn't too big of a spoiler, Winged Knight, is she somebody you created or is she an existing character?
Actually reading over the wiki the jade dragon is female.
