Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

2.101
[x] Gman

It takes you several moments to properly realize what just happened. Even when it does, you do not fully comprehend it. With but your words you captivated a room full of Samurai, one of them from a family renowned for its storytelling. In fact, you even captivated yourself, almost reliving the events you regaled the room with.

You blink. Did you just… Did you just do something impressive? The Crab Clan is made of great Samurai in its entirety, true. Such is just the way of things since your Clan holds the greatest duty in the Empire. So it shouldn't be too surprising, right?

Even still, humility is important. It would not do to show excessive pride. Such a thing would be unseemly, and ruin the moment you have created.

"Thank you Ikoma-sama," you say, bowing to her. "You honor me with your praise. I only sought to tell the story as best I could." You stand up straight. "That so many have found it worthy of listening to and immersing themselves in it is more than I could ever ask for. Thank you for hearing my tale."

"I must thank you, Sosuke-san," Kiyoshi responds. "I was not expecting such a captivating performance this evening."

"A truly stunning tale, Sosuke-san" Shasa says, smiling at you such that you only just manage not to grin stupidly back at her. "It was as if I was back there, fighting by your side."

You hide your blush by walking back to your seat, your head bowed low as you situate yourself. You've managed to overcome it as you return to your food, taking in some rice and vegetables slowly before partaking of some chicken. Telling that story actually worked up a fair bit of appetite, oddly enough. Who would have thought just talking would make one so hungry?

"A fine story, Sosuke-san," Yasuki Goro says. He's cupping a hand beneath his chin, grinning behind his fingers. "You did quite well."

"It was very descriptive and gripping," Kiyoshi says before taking a small sip of sake. "Please pardon my presumption, but was it all true? It was a rousing tale, but for… Tainted to infiltrate so deeply within the Empire is disturbing. I mean no offense to you, honored Crab, but I find it difficult to believe."

Your eyes widen a fraction. Kiyoshi's question is unusual for this setting. Yes, you brought up the subject of the Taint while you stood before her, but that can be looked over as just part of the story. For her to initiate with this topic… It might just give you some room not normally permitted.

"Everything Sosuke-san said is true," Yasuki Goro responds, no doubt having noticed what you did and capitalizing on it. "It was a hectic few nights as we helped root out the infestation that had grown within the darkness of Kyuden Bayushi. Through our combined efforts, the enemy was overcome and their vileness halted before it could spread even further."

"Our Clan Champion did receive a letter, the contents of which she did share with my lord Ikoma Zhao-sama," Kiyoshi says softly, as if to herself. "Of which I was also made privy to. I had thought it some Scorpion scheme, but for you to corroborate these events…"

She pauses, obviously deep in thought. It is only now, after so much time away from the Wall, that you can see why. The horrors you have had to live with for so long are just distant tales here on this side of the Spine of the World Mountains. The other Clans do not fully realize what it is the Crab fight, and it must be disturbing to have evidence these abominations have begun to move so close.

Such a thing might have earned scorn from you, once. Even now you find the very though frustrating. But you can't hate the people of the other Clans for this mindset now, not after experiencing a little of it yourself after a month away from the Wall. The world is just so different away from Crab lands.

You will never forget your duty, of course. Such a thing is unthinkable. But perhaps…

Perhaps I will not resent those of the other Clans so much for not understanding, you think to yourself as you observe Kiyoshi. Not now, after having seen so much more of the world beyond.

Well I want to stay silent and probably would with a different character, I don't think so this time.

[x] Write in: "We do corroborate these reports Ikoma-sama. It would be easy to dismiss as Scorpion treachery that is true, but that is not what it is. The Lion have long been renowned for their skill and strength, I find myself eager to see the Right Hand in action against an old foe."

[X]Stay silent, and carefully observe how Yasuki Goro-sama handles the talks. It may prove to be a learning experience.
-[X] Be ready to speak up if any further clarifications on the Taint and your story is needed, or if Yasuki Goro-sama needs you to for any other reason.

By speaking up, we risk much for little gain, I think. Kiyoshi doesn't have much diplomatic power as a representative. If she can't even let us stay in the castle in her Lord's absence, chances of her agreeing to a vague comment about the commitment of Lion forces are quite slim. The best we can hope for is a favourable word to her Lord, and through him, the Champion. If any other negotiations can be carried out, then Goro will know more about it than us, without doubt. We should give him room to work. We have already done our part by constructing a solid base to work from.

Also, since we have finished the task we were asked to do, further comments on the matter, especially politically flavored comments, may be seen as a slight breach of etiquette. Goro's the politician here, we are just the bodyguard. Goro himself is quite lenient, but we are in the presence of the Lion, who tend to be kind of anal about this sort of thing.

For being a Crab bushi with a brash attitude, we're pretty much a reasonable person.

Lets don't ruin that with speaking up now.

Goro is *so much better* at this stuff than we are. Any time that he's in the room and we're dealing with other clans where there isn't a specific reason for us to be the ones talking, we should let him cover it.

Silence reigns for a time, and you partake in more of your dinner while Kiyoshi considers what you have said. You briefly feel the urge to speak, but restrain yourself. What more need be said at this point? Already you have spoken as much as you can about events already completed. To press onward now seems… redundant.

And, in truth, you really don't want to ruin this moment. You've done something surprising. Perhaps it would be best to simply observe what happens, and hold any further contributions you may have back for the time being. It will give you the chance to properly examine just what your storytelling managed to accomplish, at the very least.

Finally, after several minutes, Kiyoshi sighs and shakes her head. She refills her sake cup and takes a shallow sip, still mulling over your words. Her concern is obvious, and you're honestly a little surprised by how much impact your words have had on her. When she speaks, it is in a voice so low as to almost be a whisper.

"This is very troubling."

"I can understand your feelings," Yasuki Goro says, his tone soft. His expression is almost consoling. "It is always disturbing when events such as this occur so far into the Empire."

"Yes," Kiyoshi says, grimacing. "Very much so. I must admit, I do not enjoy discussing the matter. Even thinking about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth."

Yasuki Goro nods. "Matters of the Shadowlands are unpleasant, to say the least." He shrugs. "The world would be so much better if that vile place did not have to ever be considered."

"But it does," Kiyoshi says, her eyes focusing not on anything in particular. You get the feeling she's focusing on something far off. "A threat cannot be ignored, not when there are signs this obvious." She nods to herself, and then looks at your superior. "I cannot make a binding agreement for my Family on something like this, much less my Clan, but I will be sure to voice my thoughts to my Daimyo." She takes a deep breath, as if steeling herself. "I do not think this is something the Lion can afford to overlook."

"You have my deepest appreciation," Yasuki Goro responds, bowing in his seat. "Even just a few words given is a gift of great weight, no matter what their result may be."

"A fact we of the Ikoma know well, Yasuki-san," Kiyoshi responds, bowing back to him. "Let us see what may come of them."

You restrain the urge to tilt your head. Did… Did Yasuki Goro manage to get a promise from Kiyoshi to speak with her Daimyo on the recent troubles in the Shadowlands by acknowledging the fact that many Samurai find the subject uncomfortable? That doesn't seem to make much sense at all. You'd think it would have the opposite effect, right?

Obviously this is not the case. Your superior took advantage of the mood you set somehow, though you're not entirely certain just what he did. Whatever it was, it was suitable. So much so that it's flown over your head almost entirely. You're going to have to give this whole affair some real thought if you're to have any hope of understanding it all.

From Goro's point of view that unexpected Shadowlands infiltration was a massive windfall wasn't it?

Almost, if the cost was not a Shadowlands infiltration. :p

- [X] Write-in: After you retire to the inn, inquire Goro-sama about how he got the promise by going the opposite way.

Just so we can be introduced to reverse psychology. :p

Certainly, having his bodyguards attacked while they were out enjoying a play has turned out quite nicely for him - and for the Crab as a whole.

I don't think it's reverse psychology, per se. It's more that by allowing certain things to be said and acknowledged and validated, it can become easier to get past them. Still, a useful opportunity to gain insight. At the same time, we might not want to have that discussion while in an inn in Lion lands. Better on the road, with distance to protect you from listening ears.

Indeed.
