The Ascendant Hierarchy reigns supreme. It reigns over countless star systems and more than a thousand worlds. Its enemies fall before its might sooner or later and its territory continues to expand outward in glorious conquest.

Under the leadership of Emperor Gardolf and House Kaiser, the greatness of the Ascendant Hierarchy shall reign eternal. The grand warships of the Imperial Star Navy are unmatched by their foes and its fearsome legions of ground force crush any resistance under food. The noble houses no longer squabble and plot against each other, instead loyally serving the Imperial Throne to further the glory of the Ascendant Hierarchy.

And amongst this era of glory, you are the newly appointed head of a newly formed Imperial Department. Called the Department of Designing Genetically Engineered Soldiers or DODGES for short, the Emperor and the Imperial Council have created this department to make use of new genetic material obtained from the native sapient species of the planet Sol III, an unimportant and pre-spaceflight world that has been given to Princess Juden to study.

While there is nothing wrong with the forces of the Ascendant Hierarchy, this species has extraordinary high potential for modification and can easily be adapted to the needs of the Ascendant Hierarchy. That use of that potential is your new job for you are to study the potential possibilities for this species and then create genelines of humans to serve the Ascendant Hierarchy in whatever fashion it needs.

This quest is a designer/research quest where rather than wage war or manage an empire, you are the designer of the weapons used by the empire to wage its war.

You will need to research tech and options so you can unlock them to add to new genelines in order to create new troops and servants to serve your empire and to keep your job, improve your fame and make yourself more important and respected. You will have a list of Imperial Priorities that gets update every turn and you have to do your best to fulfil.

At the moment, you are picking your character's background. The first vote lets you pick the origin of your character while the second vote lets you pick who your supporter is (and is responsible for you getting your position) and your trait. Right now, the supporter is flavour is which will only be relevant in the future so with the background vote, just worry about the trait you get.

The Cybernetic Degree gives bonus to making cyborgs or otherwise using machinery in your genelines. The Chemistry Degree does the same for drugs, chemical wiring and other chemistry stuff. Likewise, the Biology Degree does the same for stuff directly related to biology.

Discover of the Past gives a boost to projects to research and study precursor tech from ancient ruins. Explorer of the Unknown gives bonus to more exotic projects while Pioneer of the Future allows for more advanced and rarer techs to be available to you.

The character stats are diplomacy, logistics, research and engineering. Diplomacy is about getting along with other characters and is used to smooth over failures and play politics. Logistics is about supplies and budgeting, allowing you stretch your funding further. Research is about, well, researching and is used to make the research easier. Engineering is used for designing and creating the genelines and makes actually creating the modified humans easier and more likely to be successful with less undesirable results.

The department stats are funding, lab complexes, cloning complexes and testing fields. Funding is how much money you have to spend and how much income you get each turn. Lab Complexes are used for research and how much research you can do at once is limited by how many lab complexes you have. Cloning Complexes are used to create the genelines and how many you can produce at once is limited by the number of cloning complexes that your department has. Testing Fields is where you can test your genelines before handing them off to your bosses to see field usage. You don't have to test them if you are on a tight schedule, but doing so can reveal problems and issues that would otherwise be discovered when they are already in the field.

The Director
[X] [Origin] Talented Prodigy (+2 Research, +2 Engineering,)
[X] [Background] Renowned Innovator (Gain Trait 'Pioneer of the Future', Support from Emperor Gardolf Kaiser)

You are Bran Brennus, one of the smartest people in your generation and inventor of the gene-splicer and the stimulant B-Booster. You do not come from any important noble or merchant houses within the Ascendant Hierarchy and for that reason, you never felt that you could reach the heights of greatness.

You certainly couldn't get into a good university without the right connections and it was common knowledge that all the high positions of authority were less about being the most qualified for the job and more about knowing the right people. Oh, you will needed to be competent enough for the position, but you would never get the opportunity without the right connections.

So when you were offered the position as the director of a new Imperial Department, you were shocked at such a thing happening. It should have been impossible for you to be given the job, but here you are.

While you knew that you were one of the smartest around and you had managed to create a couple of famous inventions, you never expected to come to the attention of the Emperor himself.

By the Forgers, the Emperor himself…

But it is what it is and things are hardly going badly for you. No, it is the opposite as are now in charge of a new Imperial Department, Department of Designing Genetically Engineered Soldiers or DODGES.

Its purpose is unconventional and you can't think of anything similar in the history of the Ascendant Hierarchy so the whole affair is a new path to be explore. And you would hardly call yourself unqualified for the position.

Now, time to go through the metaphorical paperwork and get started on your new job.

Alright, I have changed the game mechanics a bit as I have refined them between this update and the last. Rather than have to worry about lab buildings and upkeep, I have decided to give you a set amount of actions each turn.

Each turn, you get 3 Research Actions, 1 Design Action and 1 Testing Action. Research actions have a cost that applies each time you select it and each time you select a research option, you get progress towards it being completed. Each completed research option unlocks both new modifications for your future genelines, but also unlocks more research options.

I will cover Design Actions and Testing Actions when they are a thing you can do.

Year I
[X][Research] Boosted Toughness (Biology)
[X][Research] Sharpen Vison (Biology)
[X][Research] Heldyna IV Artefact (Precusor)

The first year goes well enough. You have a free hand at this point as you are new enough and unproven enough to avoid any real oversight. That will change in the future as you prove your worth and more attention will be sent your way.

For now, you just needed a starting point and that you did. Increased toughness and better senses are what you go for. Toughness is always useful whether they are soldiers or workers while vison will allow them to have better eyesight and spotting ability in addition to opening up new avenues of research.

As you expect, both of those initial projects go swimmingly, completed ahead of schedule and without using up all of their assigned budget. The result is not only due to get a pair of new gene-mods to use in the future, but the research teams have been able to progress into future areas of both fields of research.

Unfortunately, not all news is good this year. You decided to get started on the Heldyna IV Artefact as who knows what secrets it could hold. Well, you got an idea of what secrets it holds, but that knowledge was gained in one of the worst ways possible.

***

"And it killed half the team?" you repeat, just to make sure you got this right.

"Effectively so Director," replies the woman, "The field engulfed half the complex. All organic matter caught in it was aged to dust while non-organic matter is apparently unaffected, but further testing and research will be required to confirm that."

"How quickly can we recover from this?" you ask, staring at the data appearing in your AR-HUD.

"Quick enough," answers your assistant, "The structures are intact and we can hire replacement easily enough. And while we kept footage and existing notes, the main setback at the moment is all of the data that we have lost as whatever knowledge or insights that the dead scientist had yet to write down have been lost to us. Furthermore, the replacements will need to look through what has already been discovered and otherwise get up to speed with the project."

"Well, it wasn't too serious despite the loss of life," you muse, ignoring the thoughts of if you would still think that if you were still a low ranking scientist like you used to be, "We got some progress down and idea of what the artefact does."

So design actions are pretty simple. Write-in the name of the project and write-in which unlocked mods you want to add to the geneline. There will eventually be a limit to how many mods you can add into a geneline, but I want start including the limit until you begin to approach it.

You also get extra funding from producing genelines and the more useful the geneline, the more funding you get from it.
