Generation Exobyte: A DC Comics Quest

update 3
[X] Play it cool- Damn right I'm fighting side by side with Superman.

Despite freaking out on the inside, Devin kept his cool. The voices were swirling in his head, adrenaline coursing through his system like he'd never felt before. The robots had no emotional capacity, but he could tell they were surprised at the appearance of Superman, their programming trying to keep up. Black smoke began drifting from Devin's hands, and he smirked at Superman. The superhero nodded, and in a flash, they rushed into the swarm of bots.

Devin was moving as he'd never move before, instinct dictating every movement without a moment's thought. The voices in his head were yelling at this point, a jumbled cacophony that he couldn't make heads nor tails of. For an alien invader, Brainiac's soldiers were remarkably weak; Devin shredded through swaths of them like they were merely paper. At the corners of his vision, he could see Superman crushing through the bots as well; the Kryptonian was dispatching them with amazing ease, easily segueing from flight based attacks to ground based, and blasts of heat vision when there was a clear path.

A hulking bot nearly swiped Devin's head off; he ducked under the metal claw and blasted the servitor right in the midsection, blowing it to smithereens. There was a deep rumble as the ship shook, and Superman paused midfight, not even acknowledging the blasts of orange energy and the metal fists that were attempting to punch him. The hero looked around at the walls, before becoming a sudden blur of red and blue; Devin could only watch, slack jawed, as Superman easily disposed of the rest of the servitors.

"Luthor is here." Superman said simply. "We have to go now, he'll likely have more back up than we could handle."

"Superman!" Devin said suddenly, the voices in his head rising to fever pitch. He felt as though his head would split open. "My brothers... they were bitten... and..." Devin grimaced.

"Your brothers? They weren't taken by Brainiac." Superman said tentatively, reaching a hand out to Devin's shoulder. "You okay, son?"

Devin was so sure his head was exploding; his vision faded, darker and darker, until he knew no more.

****

He didn't open his eyes at first, he could only hear an odd hum and hushed voices. For the first time in what seemed like awhile, there were no dark voices whispering unintelligibly. There was only silence in the dark place.

It took an unexpected amount of effort to open his eyes, and when he did, he was quite shocked at what he saw. It was a massive window, looking out onto Earth itself, surrounded by the bright pinpricks of light that were the stars. It was nearly breathtaking. To the right of his bed (he must've been in the infirmary,) he turned and saw Superman, Wonder Woman and Doctor Fate; the sorcerer was looking at him, the glowing eyeholes of his mask betraying no emotion.

"Hello Devin," Wonder Woman said softly, taking a seat next to his bed. "You're in the infirmary of the Watchtower, the base of the Justice League."

"So it's real!" He said, half unintentionally. Wonder Woman smiled kindly.

"Indeed it is. We had Doctor Fate look over you, as our resident magical expert; and, well-"

"You are tainted with darkness." Doctor Fate boomed, interrupting Wonder Woman. She cast him a disapproving glare. "The boy ought to know. The energies of hell run through you. It is like nothing I've ever seen. I managed to cast a charm that will quell the more... vocal aspects of your abilities. But it is something you will need to train, boy."

Devin didn't feel right, he felt unreal. All of this information being dumped on him was complete overload, and he could barely process it. Superman looked less than happy with Fate; and Wonder Woman looked sympathetically at Devin.

"We'd like to offer you a place on one of our strike teams. It'd give you a chance to master your abilities and do some good." Superman said, slowly breaking eye contact with Fate and looking at Devin.

"He shouldn't have to make a decision this soon, Kal." Wonder Woman said, an edge of steel to her voice that Superman himself backed down from. However, when she turned back to Devin, her eyes were soft. "You need some rest. Feel no rush to make your decision."

"No," Devin blurted, surprising himself. "I want to make my decision now."

It makes a good point of him not forgetting what should probably be most important to him even in light of all of these amazing and fantastical things going on around him at the moment, and goes towards establishing his character and priorities. Don't want to get caught up in the glamour of meeting all your idols/heroes and such and forget what's important.

Updates will come pretty frequently since I'm in the zone pretty much. Just putting this here to break up the tie

Due to the tie, I added the options I provided with the write-ins. I got the result this way.

- "Someone kidnapped my brothers and they can't be the only ones. If there's a chance I can help save my brothers and others like them, then count me in."

It didn't take long at all for Devin to make his decision. The thought of his brothers, captive and alone, compelled him to act as soon as he possibly could.

"I'll join." He said simply; Doctor Fate tilted his head slightly; Superman gave a small approving smile; and Wonder Woman stared at Devin as if she wanted to ensure he was sure. "My brothers are missing. New people are getting bitten every day. I want to help my brother, and I want to prevent others from being put into the same position as them." Seemingly satisfied with his explanation, Wonder Woman turned to Superman.

"I trust you'll give him the tour? I'm due on Themiscyra." Superman nodded, and Diana turned to Devin. "I hope to work with you soon, Devin."

Devin smiled, and stood from his bed. Doctor Fate began walking away, before turning to look at Devin once again.

"You are cursed, boy. There is no blessing that could save your soul now."

Superman looked angrily at Fate, who merely walked away amongst the beds.

"I'm sorry about him. Not much tact for an ancient being. Come on, let me show you around."

***

Through the silver and blue corridors of the Watchtower walked only a few people; none much recognizable by themselves. Devin recognized some belonged to the Sentinels of Magic, even a few police officers. Finally, they came to a cavernous room; at its center was a gargantuan round table, seats set all around. Devin was wide eyed as he looked around at all the heroes he recognized; Cyborg and Kid Flash were playing what appeared to be a video game on a holographic screen; Batman was glaring disapprovingly at Robin as he was showing off some fight moves; Swamp Thing sat merrily in a little corner garden, talking to some exobitten heroes; Martian Manhunter was at the head of the table, looking up at a massive hologram of Earth that was being projected from the center of the table. All around him were other heroes he didn't even recognize.

"Pretty amazing, right?" Superman said, smiling at Devin, who nodded vigorously. "Now normally our strike teams are divided up according to powers. We have sorcery strike teams, superstrength strike teams, psychic strike teams, even a team for those who just developed genius level intellects. Within this system we can mix up teams to suit it for the job." Superman indicated Devin to follow him; they walked by Green Arrow, who smirked at Devin and said what sounded like 'newbie'. The two wound their way through the corridors, coming to a sliding door that opened upon their approach.

"However, you don't fit into any of those categories necessarily. We have a squad of those who don't."

The room was spacious; one corner of it was heavily padded, and two men were sparring there. One was slim and built with lean muscle, while the other was more thickly built. The slimmer one was far faster to an unnatural degree, which clearly angered the bigger one.

"Stop effing speeding, Sean!" The big one said. The faster one just laughed.

"It's not like you can use your powers to stop me!" Sean said.

"Sean, Julian." Superman said in a booming voice, eyebrow raised. Sean stopped speeding, while Julian pushed him lightly. "This is a new member of your squad." Superman said, indicating Devin, who felt rather awkward.

"Another misfit?" Sean said. Superman sighed. "Just doing my best Creed impersonation, Supes." In a blur of motion, Sean was in front of Devin, who almost lost his balance. "Golden Thunder, at your service."

"Golden Thunder?" Devin said with a bit of disbelief.

"I know, right?" Sean said, as if it was the best name ever.

"I would display my power, but then I'd irradiate everyone on this station." Despite the bitter statement, Julian shook Devin's hand with a smile. "Fission's my codename. Big nuclear generator, need containment suit, blah blah."

"Nice to meet you two." Devin said, at ease in their presence. "Are there any others?"

"Lumino and Mind's Eye are out on an assignment in Metropolis. Gorilla Grodd has launched an attack and started devolving citizens." Superman said matter of fact my. Devin raised an eyebrow.

"Least of your concerns?"

"They can more than handle Grodd. Our top concerns are exobitten citizens and Brainiac's invasion." Superman placed a hand on Devin's shoulder. "Don't worry, Devin. We'll find your brothers. I already have Oracle working as much as she can. For now, you can relax here; I'm sure these two will help you find a codename." Superman said. Devin nodded and smiled. The Kryptonian turned to the other two, a playful smile on his face. "Behave, you two."

As he left, Devin felt oddly alone.

"Weird, right?" Sean said. "You were home safe, then next thing you know you're thousands of miles above Earth, already a superhero." Devin couldn't help but smile. Superhero. Wow. It was pretty sweet to think of himself as one of those.

"What's your power?" Julian asked. Devin had to stop himself from saying he was just cursed- didn't seem very appropriate.

"As far as I know, it's some sort of celestial thing. Energy of the gods type deal." Devin shrugged, trying to act like it wasn't inwardly torturing him.

"Oooh, we got a god over here." Sean snickered, while Julian rolled his eyes.

"Well, welcome to the team, Devin. Got a codename?" Julian asked. Devin considered for a moment. What could his name be?

[] The Cursed- Doctor Fate called him cursed. He'll own it. Plus it seems like the type of name the bad guys would be afraid of.

[x] Gargoyle

Okay, here me out.

Dr. Fate says we're cursed, which makes sense considering we're channeling power from a demon dimension. So, the smart thing to do would be to try and ward off the curse or evil or whatever.

Turns out, there's a whole big thing about doing that magic-wise: Apotropaic magic, magic to ward away evil and curses.

These include things like amulets, prayers, things to ward off the Evil Eye including pictures of eyes or mirrors, and the various gargoyles and grotesques you see on old Gothic cathedrals.

These grotesques and gargoyles were basically intended to scare away evil spirits and were often placed around doorways and gates for this purpose. Though technically gargoyles are a specific type of grotesque designed to serve a additional purpose in architecture.

Anyway... the rundown of this is that if we're cursed we probably should look into protection from curses and evil, and one of those classic ways of doing so involves scary faces designed to ward away evil. So, if we take on a gargoyle theme for our superhero identity, we could probably use that to alleviate some of that curse.

Plus, we're a superhero and scaring away evil is kind of something gargoyles are already good at. We get a name that doesn't sound like an edgy anti-hero from the 90's, and just the idea and name "Gargoyle" has enough leeway that we can invoke a range from grimdark serious Batman who constantly scowls and acts alone, to a more campy Adam West Batman who knows how to act professional and work with the police.

And no, I don't think we have to dress up like a leather-winged ogre thing any more than Batman has to dress like a bat. Hell, just wear some clothes colored roughly the same as the stone on churches or cathedrals, maybe a mask that's kinda scary or goofy, and a short cape to invoke wings that won't get caught on things.

Then once our costume's done we get our butts out there and help save people!

If we ever feel the need to update our ensemble, just consult with Fate or other magic users on ways to protect ourselves from our curse and start incorporating amulets, mirrors, charms, crosses and ankhs into our outfit as needed.

update 5
Bit of a shorter chapter here just so we can finalize character details. Voting closes Monday.

[] Blacklight won the vote

"Yeah, I got one." Devin said with a small smile. "Blacklight." Sean scoffed, while Julian nodded appreciatively.

"Come on man, Blacklight? Why not Dark Dawn or something? Gotta be two words, bro." Sean said with a shake of his head, while Julian rolled his eyes.

"It is two words, though. 'Black', and 'light.' Pretty simple." Julian said. Devin snorted, and Sean looked deeply offended. Before they could get started, Devin cut in.

"What about a costume? Or did I have to make my own?" He asked, not entirely sure how to approach his costume.

"WayneTech leant a fabrication machine to us, it's real advanced stuff," Julian said. "We could get you a suit in no time. What are you thinking?"

[] Skintight- I don't need much protection with my abilities. Something skintight and designed well will serve me well enough. Maximum maneuverability in the battlefield at the cost of protection.

[] Light Armored- A little light armor will go a long way. A little less maneuverability with better protection.

[] Heavily Armored- Better safe than sorry. I don't need the maneuverability as much as other powers would. Far less maneuverability with near fool proof protection.

"Plus the color scheme bro. That's the most important!" Sean cut in. "Blacklight probably would be something dark, right?"

"Good point, but we don't want him to look like a villain. Trust me, something as inconsequential as costume color will affect how you're viewed in this world." Julian added.

[] Dark Color Scheme- They may see me as a villain, but the dark is the best representation of me and my abilities. (Blacks and greys)

[] In Between- Representing the darkness, while showing the light. (Black, white and gold)

[] Light Color Scheme- Julian has a point. I'm a hero now, I should look like one. (Purples, whites and dark blues)

***

The fabrication machine did it's work far faster than Devin even thought possible. The product that was produced was exactly as Devin envisioned it, and fit him perfectly. Even Sean had to complement him, with an approving head nod and a "slick!" As Devin appreciated his new suit in the mirror, a large computer screen on the wall near the back of the room began beeping loudly and flashing red. Julian and Sean looked worried.

"That's their distress beacon!" Julian said, rushing into action; he suited up into something that resembled an orange and blue space suit, minus the helmet. In a burst of golden electricity, Sean changed into his own white and gold suit.

"You can sit this one out, Devin." Julian said as he stretched his half mask over his head. "You've been through a lot. We can handle this."

[] Go- I'm itching to get into the fight. We capture Grodd, we might find out some valuable information about the Legion of Doom and their own exobitten villains and prisoners.

[] Stay- He's right. I should take a day off and train- and hopefully consult some magic users that could possibly be more helpful. I'm sure Fission and Golden Thunder can handle it.
