Hero Name: Wraith
Real Name: Tanabe Ryou
Sex: Male
Age: 25
Origin: Fukuoka, Japan
Bio: Ryou was born in his mother's hometown, Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu in 1930. His father, Keiichi, was an officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy and thus frequently absent throughout his childhood; he died at the Battle of Midway when Ryou was twelve. In 1945, Ryou, his mother, and his younger sister fled the firebombing of Fukuoka and found refuge in the nearby town of Itoshima, where they later witnessed the atomic bombing of Nagasaki less than a hundred miles to the south. After the war ended and the United States began their occupation of Japan, Ryou and his family moved to live with uncle, Dr. Tanabe Shigeo, in Tokyo. His uncle had previously worked for the Japanese military as a medical researcher - specifically, as a member of Unit 731, a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit which undertook lethal experimentation on Chinese civilians during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The war's conclusion coincided with a widespread cover-up of the unit's atrocities and the granting of immunity from war crimes prosecution to its members by the Americans. Four months later, Shigeo and a number of his former colleagues joined a new, American-backed unit dedicated to the burgeoning study of Ambrosia and its capacity to induce superhuman abilities in certain individuals; four years later, Shigeo had risen to the rank of Lt. General and served as the unit's second-in-command. As far as his family or anyone else was concerned, he just worked in a hospital.
For several years the unit's principal goal - the creation of a Japanese superhuman - remained elusive due to a dearth of viable candidates who tested positively to Ambrosia exposure. Lt. General Tanabe himself was initially considered a viable candidate with stellar susceptibility scores; however, he was ultimately removed from contention after further testing also revealed an undiagnosed terminal illness. It was then that the members of the unit turned their attention to Ryou, Shigeo's closest blood relative and a young man in peak physical condition. When the twenty-year-old was discretely tested under the guise of a routine doctor's appointment, the researchers were astounded at their good fortune: they surmised that they would not find a better match than him in the entire country. However, at that time Ryou was a rising star in the world of Japanese professional baseball and was being scouted as a top pitching prospect for the coming season - he had no interest in taking part in a shady government experiment. No matter how much his uncle begged, he flatly refused to undergo the procedure.
Three months later, Ryou was driving to practice when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The accident left him with injuries which prevented from playing at anywhere close to his previous level, shattering his dreams of being a professional athlete. Despondent and directionless, he naturally jumped at his uncle's second offer to undergo the procedure - he was led to believe it could have the side effect of curing the chronic pain and stiffness in his right arm. He thought nothing of the fact that the car accident - an unsolved hit-and-run - had occurred so soon after he had declined to the undergo the procedure voluntarily. He believed his uncle was not that kind of man.
Unfortunately for Ryou's persistent aspirations to baseball fame, the injection of Ambrosia did not return to him his ability to pitch at the professional standard. What it
did do was endow him with powerful superhuman abilities; namely, the power to shift into a
shadow state of living darkness capable of flight, movement, extrasensory perception, invisibility, intangibility, and electronic interference. Deciding that becoming Japan's sole superhero was a satisfying alternative to professional sport, Ryou agreed to don a mask, costume, and code-name, receive grueling military training, and work to protect his country. In 1955, Ryou was officially introduced to the world as
Wraith, the Shadow Hero. However, it is suspected that he may have worked covertly as a spy and assassin throughout East Asia at the behest of the Japanese government and Central Intelligence Agency since at least 1953.
Public Persona: Ryou's public persona is reserved, mysterious, and more than a little intimidating. This largely stems from the unnerving nature of Ryou's abilities, as well as from the desire of his government handlers to restrict the international community's knowledge of his powers or personality. In the few interviews he has given to the press since his debut, he was perceived by some to be arrogant, blunt, and cold, while others thought him cool and collected.
Appearance: Beneath his black body armor, mask, cowl, and cloak, Ryou is tall, broad-shouldered and athletic.
