Food of the Gods: 1955 (Mark II)

Can't wait for the diplomatic incidents caused by random statue vandalism.

"We now have a twenty metre tall statue of Ataturk in the middle of our capital city, what are you going to do about it?"
"You have no way of proving this was us"
"You're telling us that there might be some other superhuman running around erecting sixty foot statues of your leader in random cities?"
"We have no way to be sure"
"Oh, and Kiztürk signed her name at the bottom as well"
"for crying out loud Esel..."

Turkey to this day fucking well reveres Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and in the research I did when figuring out my character and intended plans for this game it's easy to see why. He's the war hero who won them independence and then had enough political clout and public support to straight up convert Turkey from, like, Islamist Monarchy to a Secular Parliamentary Democracy in under a decade. Financial reform, educational reform, woman's suffrage, reorganisation of the military... he did it all.

Hell, "Ataturk" is literally an extra name they voted him meaning 'Father of the Turks'

And sure he's been dead for like seventeen years by this point but Esel was a very impressionable young lady!

Tirdâde Marzban

Basics

Hero name: Tirdâde Marzban. Tirdâd or Marzban for short.
Real name: Shahrazad Minuzadeh
Sex: Female
Age: 30
Public persona: Shahrazad Minuzadeh, representative of the Zoroastrian community of Iran to the Royal Pahlavi Court.

Appearance and Background

1262

Credit for the art goes to stirringwinds.

Background: Born in Yazd province, Shahrazad's mother always told her that she was something special. Born on the very same day as when Reza Shah took the throne of Iran, Shahrazad would grow up to idolize the monarchy he represented. Practicing the Zoroastrian faith of her family, she witnessed how the Kashf-e Hijab policy of the Shah tore off the veils of her Muslim friends and compatriots, but left her alone. She witnessed how Zoroastrians went to a tiny minority in lives of toil, to an exalted symbol of a free and independent Iran. She, along with many other Zoroastrians walked a march of mourning when the old Shah was deposed after the days of the Anglo-Soviet invasion, memories which still haunt her to this day.

Shahrazad was always a perfect symbol. Charismatic and loyal and belonging to an increasingly educated middle class, she was the exact kind of woman that the regime of the Pahlavi dynasty exalted. After receiving a degree in jurisprudence at the University of Tehran, she participated in a series of medical screenings as part of a census; screenings that would reveal her compatibility with ambrosia. In but a few weeks, a university graduate would become the representative of Zoroastrian concerns to the royal court and more than that.

In her persona as Tirdâde Marzban, Shahrazad is confident and stoutly nationalistic, wearing garbs reminiscent of a luxurious Achaemenid dress and a crown to go with it. Wearing no veil, she is a mixed bag to many Iranians, the nationalists and modernists argue that she is everything that the future holds for Iran; glorious and modern. The conservatives and clergy say that she is a moral disaster. Regardless, she does her best to work in the interests of Iran, disdaining superheroic antics in favour of political engagement and assisting the heroes of the neighbouring states of Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Anything that's not explicitly taken is still available. But ones that might be fun to play that are still around (I'm pretty sure); Egypt, Vietnam (either side), Belgium, Indonesia, Portugal, Greece, Sweden.
Dan is north Vietnam
Thanks Julius! I'm North Vietnam, yeah, though I'm not on the OOC list of countries.

@inquisition About that: I am confirmed as North Vietnam, a Tier 4 country, correct?

Berserk (Free: Human) Immediately after suffering a wound (including a Shaken result from physical damage), your hero must make a Smarts roll or go Berserk. While Berserk, his Parry is reduced by 2 but he adds +2 to all Fighting, Strength, melee damage rolls, and Toughness. The warrior ignores all wound modifiers while Berserk, but cannot use any skills, Edges, or maneuvers that require concentration, including Shooting and Taunt, but not Intimidation. Berserkers attack with reckless abandon. Anytime his Fighting die is a 1 (regardless of his Wild Die), he hits a random adjacent target (not the original target). The attack may hit friend as well as foe. If there are no other adjacent targets, the blow simply misses. The Berserker may end his rage by doing nothing (not even moving) for one full action and making a Smarts roll at –2.

Brawler (2 points of hindrance)
When he hits a foe with a successful bare-handed Fighting skill, +2 damage.

Hindrances: (1 Major, 2 Minor)
Dependency (Major) - Rakia (Fruit Brandy)

Death Wish (Minor) - Unite all South Slavs Having a death wish doesn't mean your character is suicidal—but he does want to die after completing some important goal. He won't throw his life away, but when there's a chance to complete his goal he'll do anything—and take any risk—to achieve it.

Loyal (Minor) Your character may not be a hero, but he'd give his life for his friends. This character can never leave a man behind if there's any chance at all he could help.

PERSONA
Hero name: Mastema
Real name: Ezekiel Barak
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Age: 28

Bio: The Holocaust destroyed the Barak family. At the age of seventeen, Ezekiel, a Hungarian Jew who grew in rural Hungary, was picked up by the Nazis and his family and sent to Auschwitz. His father was gassed upon arrival, and his mother was worked to death. Ezekiel would be part of the long death-march out of Auschwitz, and would end up in Bergen-Belsen. In August of 1945, British forces liberated the camp. Ezekiel though was without a home or a family. Ezekiel, at the urging of other survivors, emigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1945, and would join the infamous paramilitary group Haganah group to fight against Palestinian Arabs who opposed the creation of a Jewish state. Ezekiel would soon become a member of the Palmach, the elite forces of the Haganah. In 1948, almost three years after the war, the State of Israel was declared, and was immediately attacked by Arab forces. Ezekiel would continue his service with the Palmach and the new IDF during the war. After the war's end, Ezekiel would sign up for a program to test a certain type of drug on military soldiers. Ezekiel would later find out that what he received was a tiny amount of Ambrosia, the power-granting wonder-drug that the US so willingly shared the secrets with with its new ally, Israel. Ezekiel's body reacted the best to the drug, and as such, Ezekiel was approached by Israeli officers with a proposition, to join a new intelligence agency that was being created for the Israeli state, and to be Israel's new super-soldier in future Arab-Israeli wars. Ezekiel agreed, and became one of the first agents of the Central Institute for Coordination, which would develop into the infamous Israeli intelligence force, Mossad. Ezekiel would be given Ambrosia by Mossad, and with additional training, would turn into one of Mossad's deadliest assassins and warriors. Ezekiel would be joined with other members of Mossad's Kidon group to carry out assassinations, espionage, and counter-intelligence operations for the State of Israel.

Ezekiel is the perfect assassin for Mossad, carved by Ambrosia and years of combat service/training to fit such a mold. His quest to ensure that no Jew suffer persecution under a foreign power drives him to better himself, and drives him to loyally serve Israel. This drive and skill earned him the code-name "Mastema", the demon who slew the sinful and evil in the Old Testament.

Public persona: Ezekial Barak is a member of the Israeli Diplomatic Corp when he is not donning his persona. His status as a Mossad Agent allows him to easily gain residence at any Israeli embassy in the world. For countries that recognize Israel, this persona makes it easy for Ezekial to get into those countries and stay there for long periods of time. For hostile countries or countries that do not recognize Israel, Ezekiel is usually dropped in as Mastema to conduct operations.

Hero name: Kiztürk (Literally 'Daughter of the Turks')

Real name: Dr Esel Demir

Sex: Female

Age: 32

Bio: Esel was born a year after the conclusion of the Turkish War of Independence to a soldier and the housewife who had waited patiently for him to come home. Her early years, therefore, were spent surrounded by the ongoing works and initiatives of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the 'Father of the Turks', raised by parents who were both fervent supporters of his Kemalist ideology. It was this ideology that opened higher education to women for the first time, and Esel was among the first generation of women students and graduates in the country's history, a fact she took considerable pride in.

When the Ataturk finally fell, she mourned alongside millions, and then dedicated herself with a singular ferocity to the pursuit of his vision and ideology. Qualifying as an engineer and architect, she entered the workforce and poured her body and soul into civic development projects, building roads and schools for her fellow Turks so that their nation's path of upwards development might never stop.

As an employee of the state, Esel took part in the mandatory medical screenings that the state issued in hopes of discovering people compatible with ambrosia, and was one of the very few to come back positive. Eventually, Parliament chose Esel for the project on the strength of her unwavering commitment to Turkish nationalism and the Kemalist ideology; they had no interest in creating a potential defector.

Public persona: Kizturk is, as her taken name might suggest, an icon of Turkish nationalism and the products of their liberal reforms. She presents herself as an educated and well spoken scientist and politician, directly employed as a civil servant by parliament, the product of Ataturk's reforms and dedicated to carrying on his work, disdaining the flashy 'costumes' that foreign superhumans appear to consider mandatory.

Hindrances:
Code of Honour (Major) - Kizturk will always keep her word, and will generally do whatever she can to operate within what she considers the 'proper' means of doing things, which Parliament finds quite comforting.

Vow (Minor) - Kizturk has a belief in the principles of Kemalism and the nationalist ambitions of Turkey that motivates her to a near obsessive degree. She is forever on the lookout for ways to further those loyalties.

Pacifist (Minor) - Kizturk will only fight when given no other option, and utterly refuses to allow harm to come to prisoners or other helpless targets.

POWERS & ABILITIES

Invested AP: 20
Powers:
  • Matter Control (10 AP): Level Four
    • Trappings: Sympathetic Resonance
    • Kiztürk can manipulate all solid, non-living matter within a short distance around herself. Her strength for the purposes of such manipulation is d12+2, which is also what she rolls to attack with it.
    • Modifiers
      • -2: Requires material. Kizturk can only manipulate material that already exists, she cannot simply conjure it into existence.
      • +2: Extended from "earth/stone" to all forms of solid, non-living matter (note: five points would let her control literally all kinds of matter so I'm hoping this works as a balance point)
      • +2: Increased range, effectively 'within firearm distance'.
  • Altered Form (5 AP)
    • Trappings: Living Statue
    • Kizturk has the ability to transform herself into a beautiful statue made out of whatever material happens to be in the surrounding area. While in this state she has no vital organs and gets the associated minor benefits of being made of living stone. She can also change her size up to three categories in the process, but does not inherently gain any further strength or toughness from it.
    • Modifiers
      • (-1) Requires Activation. This power is normally a permanent alteration to one's form, but Kizturk must spend a few moments of concentration to trigger it.
      • (+3) Replenish: Kizturk may heal her own wounds by replacing damaged sections of her form with matter taken from the surrounding environment.
  • Speak Language (1 AP)
    • Trappings: Genius
    • Kizturk can read, write and speak any language she encounters after a few minutes of exposure and practice.
    • Modifiers
      • (+1 AP) Extends the ability to writing and reading
      • (-1 AP) Contingent: Kizturk only benefits from the enhanced learning speed when in statue form.
  • Teleport (3 AP)
    • Trappings: Project self through the ground
    • Kizturk can reflexively teleport back and forth in a relatively short distance around herself. She can take anything she is carrying or touching with her, to a limit of about six people.
    • Modifiers
      • (+3) Traverse: In addition to tactical range instant movement, Kizturk can spend about twenty seconds of concentration to teleport anywhere in the globe.
      • (-1) Contingent: Can only be used in statue form
      • (-2) Limited: Can only use when in contact with solid matter, and to a destination also in contact with that same matter. On the ground this is global, but in a plane or boat she is much more limited.
  • Doesn't Breathe (1 AP)
    • Trappings: Statues don't have lungs
    • When in statue form, Kizturk cannot suffocate or drown
      • (-1 AP) Contingent: In statue form.
Accepted!

Since Bennies have been removed would it be possible to also reduce the penalty on the Shaken state a little (for instance maybe having it wear off after a set number of actions)? Right now it seems like it's a little excessively punishing on low spirit characters, since you can't spend a benny to get out of it
Hm... How about this - the three "soak opportunities" can also be used to break out of Shaken as well. Call the mechanic "Limit break" or something.

I'm still considering making a different 60 point character (or even dividing it into multiple characters), but here is the 10 Ambrosia Point American prototype superhuman that has been around and operating for a bit -

EDIT: wait a second, trying to fix something.
Looks good to me - though I had trouble seeing the sheet with the accordion (had to actually read it in the reply dialog).

Thanks Julius! I'm North Vietnam, yeah, though I'm not on the OOC list of countries.

@inquisition About that: I am confirmed as North Vietnam, a Tier 4 country, correct?
Yes, sorry - I keep forgetting to update the list.

Bedrieër - South Africa
PERSONA
Hero name:
Bedrieër
Real name: Johanna Famke Majaandie
Sex: Female
Age: 26
Bio: Born to a wealthy landowning family in Stellenbosch, Johanna Famke Majaandie is the image of Boer femininity, except for one, single thing... She is absolutely ruthless. Chosen as a way of avoiding tests on non-white citizens, her powers have only served to heighten her abilities to manipulate all those around her into seeing things her way.

Schooled in the most prestigious private schools, engaged at a young age to a Dutch magnate who was humiliated by the revelation of his infidelity and lost half his assets to his distraught wife only a few short years after their childless marriage, everything has a way of coming up Johanna.

Public persona: Bedrieër's powers are a poorly kept secret. While she often appears for photo ops and parties, often she leaves all second-guessing themselves. How can you trust the quality of her banter, or the persuasiveness of her ideas, if you don't know whether those thoughts are truly your own? This aura of suspicion only strengthens her, as she can play the suspicions of one rival against another without every really using her powers at all.

Interesting gender ratio for the 50s
Well... my first idea was a character called "Sovereign" a hero who wears super goggles and flies around London solving crimes. She obviously isn't the Queen, cause Sovereign wears goggles and the Queen doesn't wear goggles, so obviously she couldn't see as the Queen.

Then I went with the Science Hero idea.

Interesting gender ratio for the 50s
Iran at this time was explicitly interested in exalting its Zoroastrian minority as a symbol of its imagined glorious past by nationalist admiration of the Achaemenids and Sasanians. Having just 19 years earlier empowered the police to literally tear off the hijabs of women caught with them on the street to literally "force-modernize" its female population, it would be in the interests of the Iranian state to get a non-veil-wearing woman of the Zoroastrian faith to serve as national symbol. :p

Looks good to me - though I had trouble seeing the sheet with the accordion (had to actually read it in the reply dialog).
Yeah, I'm trying to fix it, but the code is real fucky. I don't want to pull it out of the accordion though because it took like half of yesterday to set up. :V

It'd be more true to the time to have a very male heavy lineup, sure, but given we are talking superheros, eye lasers, and people flash building monuments to Ataturk, it's not like it's something to fuss over.
Really though, while the other two are present we are lacking somewhat in the eye lasers department.

So far we have;
- Indian Iron Man
- Czech Punchy Lizard Man
- West German Rabbit Flash
- Australian Wolverine but with Guns instead of Claws
- Yugoslav Invisible Ninja
- British Tech-savvy Ghost Detective
- American Super Inventor
- Zombie El Cid
- Israeli Assassin
- Turkish Statue Girl
- American Shapeshifter
- Iranian Super-Sorcerer

We've got a really diverse set of superheroes, but absolutely none with eye lasers!

mine is ready but I need to be at work to type it up lol. So tommorow mine will get posted. No lasers here though!
