Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

[x] Unleash the fire elemental on the enemy ship

Might as well vote for it myself.
Mina will do as she will.

There isn't any reason Kori couldn't use the Fire Elemental next round. His Burst of Radiance spell can inflict 5d4 damage on anything Evil in a 10 foot radius, and Blind everything in that same radius. On a ship with limited space and people bunched up close together, that could be a lot of injured and incapacitated people, including the enemy mage if we're lucky.

Okay? We aren't doing this round by round, are we? I can vote for both.

[x] Kori targets the approaching ship with his Burst of Radiance spell, while Mina does the same with her Web spell. They aim to incapacitate as many enemies as possible.
[x] Unleash the fire elemental on the enemy ship

This is the choice of 'what do we focus on': 1) the Captain, 2) the Thing 3) the boarders 4) the Wizard.
We are proposing 5) the enemy ship, which is close to 4, but doesn't require us to locate the wizard specifically and tries to draw them out. I don't really care in which order things are done, so long as there is a consensus of what we want done.

Yes, haste is one of those things you can't see that well when it's not on you.

Arc 7 Post 5: Crowned in Fire
Crowned in Fire

10th of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The veil of invisibility is a fragile thing, the least violence offered to another living thing, be it even a worm underfoot will break it, if yours is the hand that deals it. Reaching into the messenger's pouch you feel the cracked ruby just shy of hot under the hand. "Burn," you whisper and watch the arc of hungry flame twist into being and strike the man next to the bolt thrower that seems most ready to fire, spreading fear as much as fire among the pirate crew, though even that pales beside the scream of pure animal pain that issues from Du Moire as Gavhaul reveals himself in a haze of colorless light, pulsing around his hands and head.

"Miserable... craven... bilge... rat!" Every other word out of the mage's mouth is punctuated by another gasp from the pirate captain, he has not the breath to scream.

Du Moire Suffers -4 on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks

Unfortunately for him, though not particularly fortunately for his foe, one of the enemy sailors clambering onto the deck throws a vial filled with some manner of foul yellowish bile onto him, making the wizard double over the start to retch even as his attacker is slammer bodily into the railing by a spear thrust that comes within inches of piercing his neck and instead 'only' manages to sink into his left shoulder.

Gavhaul is Nauseated

Pirate thug One takes 10 Damage -> Now at 12/22

Blood flows freely wherever you watch as Gorok's axe slashes down once, twice with strength enough to hew off a limb, but mistiming where the flailing Du Moire even would be, instead sending a shower of splinters into the air. Meanwhile of the four sailors coming up behind the man with the vial only one, a woman with a glass eye and a wicked looking scar manages to hang on to the rope, the others crash back into the boat under the brief power of Mina's magic.

Pirate Thugs Two, Three, and Four take 4 Damage -> Now at 18/22

Alas, things are not going nearly as well on the other side of the ship with the spider thing bowling over the defenders, ripping weapons from their hands as it heads right for Du Moire, seemingly planning to bowl right through Gorok... at least until one of the pirates raises her hand and intones a spell, a bolt of flame hurled right at his head. If iruxi had hair he would have singed it in his ducking. The wizard herself seems to stumble upon an shadow, eyes half lidded, but she keeps her feet, intent on a rescue.

Akorian Spellcraft: 1d20+7 = 27 (Success)

Things might have been thought of as going well, especially with the sailors on the Hydra's Fang too intent trying to contain the elemental to throw their own lines, then the fiends catch on to the trick. The Fruitful Endeavor's sails go up like they had been dipped in pitch as terror catches root among the very mercenaries who had been meant to come east with you.

Three mercenaries are Frightened
Sails are Aflame

One of them seems to trip over something unseen... as that something materializes into a very solid seeming Cob cutting the tendons in Du Moire's left foot. "Gotcha!"

Darsielle Du Moire takes 21 Damage -> Now at 7/42

He had unfortunately spoken too soon, as you watch as the spider skitters past Gorok, uncaring of the axe-blow that should by rights have split its barrel body, and picks up the fallen captain.

It's taking him over the side!
Moving more on instinct than sense you slash at the man in passing, somehow finding his throat, though the cut isn't anywhere near deep enough. All it does is stain the wood of the spider's body as the thing lands in the water with a splash where is floats like an improbable cork, already starting to paddle with an awkward twist of its legs.

Cutlass Spider takes 7 Damage -> Now at 65/72

Darsielle Du Moire takes 2 Damage -> Now at 5/42
.

"Get me that son of a poxed whore!" Gavhaul barks as he manages to regain control of his stomach, his fine robes soiled on the front.

"Damn your eyes! My ship's burning!" Mel curses as she tries to rally the crew among panicking mercenaries and foes still up on the deck.

What do you do?

[] Listen to Gavhaul, he is the boss, at least for now

[] Listen to Mel, it's her ship and you do not fancy swimming back to port

[] Try to split up
-[] Write in

OOC: For anyone wondering the reason Sirim did not show, its because no one seemed to be in deadly peril and he is trying to keep up the familiar ruse.

@DragonPararox, how far away has Du Moire gotten? Is the Cutlass Spider carrying him toward the enemy ship?

The Elemental was Summoned to attack the enemy ship, right? If Kori targeted it at a person, it will only attack that one target then leave after they die, but attacking the ship itself means it should try to set it aflame until someone kills it or it's duration ends

Also, you had Gorok wielding his axe in the fight instead of his new sword.

  1. He's in the water, next to your ship, the spider is swimming towards the enemy ship. It will get there next turn.
  2. The thing has to attack a person, that is how it works, it cannot get angry at a boat
  3. That is what he has on him yeah, he has not gotten used to the sword yet

Has it done fire damage to ship at least?

Yes, that is why they are panicking. Fire elementals cause fire by just passing over flammable surfaces,*. The base game does not say they do, potentially since the designers think it might be a balance concern but.... it is a giant ball of fire, there is no way to adjudicate that otherwise

*Every round they cause a a fire two sizes smaller than themselves under them which then spreads naturally. If at the end of the round they are standing on a fire that fire grows by one size category.

Shouldn't have used the Fire Elemental yet. Oh well, lesson learned.

Still not sure what is happening here, but I don't want to make it easy for these people to escape. With our ship's sails aflame, we might not be able to easily pursue if they try to flee. If we cause enough confusion and impediment on their ship, we can potentially prevent them from retreating while we stabilize things on our own ship.

Du Moire is important enough to have apparent command of a fairly powerful Construct, so taking him out of the picture before he can pull off anything dangerous or annoying is worth Kori's attention for one round, IMO. A Boneshaker spell will inflict 5d6 damage, so even if Du Moire saves, he's going to take half damage and either be rendered unconscious and on death's door, or just dead. We have a Speak with Dead scroll to use, if necessary, in case we want to interrogate his corpse.

Kori's Create Water Cantrip is good for 10 gallons of water per casting, so that should help quite a bit if he can dedicate enough time to it.

[X] Argh!!! My bones!
-[X] Cob, Gorok, Warty, and the other Iruxi continue cleaning up the enemies on our ship, with special focus toward the mage who targeted Gorok, and the Fiends if they're still in sight.
-[X] Mina targets the enemy ship with a Web spell, seeking to bind as many enemies as possible.
-[X] Sirim targets enemy sailors on the other ship with his Hypnotic Pattern spell, trying to avoid any already caught by Mina's Web.
-[X] Kori targets Du Moire with a Boneshaker spell. In the next round, if nothing else takes his attention, he begins casting Create Water cantrips on the burning sails.

Enemy leader is in crippling pain from some kind of spell and almost unconcious, the construct was seemingly programed to protect him so it charged though the crew and garbed him intent on getting him to safety

Ahem.
Abductor Beast Figurine
Description: This strange statuette is unlike any beast seen on the surface of Golarion, breeding a nagging fear in those who walk under the light soon to avert their gazes. They have never experienced those tendrils first hand.
Ability: Same as Serpentine Eagle Figurine (Greater Power Usable 8 hour/Month in one hour increments)
Get back in here. We aren't done with you yet.

[x] Summon the Abductor Beast to get Du Moire back on our ship.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. They used it to try and kidnap us once; now is our turn. It's in the name.

Once that is done, it can be used to keep the spider-thing out of our hair.

  1. The thing has to attack a person, that is how it works, it cannot get angry at a boat
So did it kill whatever it was directed at, or is it in pursuit?

Where else would you use it? Certainly not on our ship if Captain Mel has to say anything about it. Can't send it in the water after Du Moire either. I don't think there is a better use for it at sea than debilitating enemy ships and scattering their crew.

Taking him alive looks good on our resume, and we could use an additional summon that isn't afraid of water.

It is not a powerful combatant. Using it here risks losing it in the ocean if the Construct hits it hard a couple times.

It doesn't necessarily need to be used whenever the opportunity arises, or it could have been used now against the fleeing captain to save resources.

That said, I think the outcome here has worked out pretty well if it's presence on the other ship is distracting multiple enemies.

I'm more concerned about victory for the moment instead of taking prisoners. If we kill him now, we don't have to worry about him getting up to further shenanigans.
