Fall Writes

chapter seventy "Lifting Your Chin" of Enter The Dragon went live earlier today (ao3 profile).

breather chapter here. qrow shows he's not going anywhere, yang name drops some of the people who will be backing them up against cinder. everyone has reservations, and dinner. noodles are had. solutions are not. closing in on the end.

chapter seventy-one "Family Ties IV" of Enter The Dragon is live (ao3 profile).

this is the fic. that. ne-ver. ends! please just let me rest

more seriously, a lot of the motivation for this fic is spite. RWBY had a good thing going for a while, and then it didn't. we lost entire layers of meaning and intent when Monty passed, and RWBY hasn't recovered from that. colors and names and semblances used to mean something, and now they mean a lot less. plotlines that looked promising have been forgotten about. character motives discarded. and I hate that.

I don't mean to say that ETD would make for a better show. I'm neither a scriptwriter nor a visual artist; I don't write for the screen and I have no intention of starting. ETD is also mainly about yang, whereas RWBY proper (should be) about all four main girls. I write ETD because it is personally satisfying. I'm seeing themes done justice and plotlines resolved. I'm ignoring characters introduced in later seasons in favor of using the ones already extant. I'm conserving semblances and magic and everything else. and it feels good. it feels really good to feel like I'm continuing what got left behind. because I hate what's being done currently.

more on topic, I think this chapter illustrates that. qrow and taiyang are both hiding things from the characters (but not the audience; they know qrow can turn into a bird, but yang and ruby do not), but qrow is doing a better job of it. it will make the inevitable feelings of betrayal hit that much harder, because at least yang knows taiyang is hiding shit from her. qrow is avoiding the topic so skillfully she hasn't stopped to think that there is a topic.

it's also worth noting that he wouldn't succeed in this with someone whose trust he didn't already have. yang and ruby trust him, and they're willing to be led elsewhere. someone who had no reason to trust qrow would likely be more alert, chase down trains of thought that he doesn't want chased. it's gonna be delicious when they finally realize what he's been doing.

chapter seventy-two "Clouds On The Horizon" of Enter The Dragon is live (ao3 profile).

little by little, the plot comes together. when I first outlined this chapter, I envisioned neptune going with weiss to atlas, but as you can see he hasn't even made it to mistral yet. so instead, blake goes. it wouldn't quite be the same if neptune went with her. he's done some off-screen growing up, but he's still not a source of emotional strength the way blake is for weiss. I could have delayed this scene and had sssn show up so neptune could go, but I think this will work out better in the end. not only is weiss getting some support, yang is losing some of her immediate support, and that will leave room for some things coming up.

the next few chapters include a swerve to deal with something I didn't think would be a thing: cfvy apparently needs more personal attention than I anticipated. I thought they'd just show up and deal with baddies in the background, but apparently this fic is a recovery fic for everyone. I'm genuinely excited about some of the scenes, even though I was grumpy when they first interjected themselves. cfvy puns, coming soon to a fic near you!

chapter seventy-three "Brewing CFVY" of Enter The Dragon is live (ao3 profile).

here we are, a section I'd been struggling with and rolling my eyes concerning. I really enjoy writing Yang's recovery, how it's a mix of her own effort and other people nudging her to do better, get better. she hasn't done a lot of conscious recovery stuff lately, but I think it's been implied that she's worked with it.

also: surprise, she's the Y in CFVY! I really wanted her to take Coco's place, but I couldn't come up with a decent team name for them. so instead, Yatsuhashi isn't coming back (in this fic) and she takes his place. and boy, is that gonna be one hell of a chapter. team training with CFVY. look out for it.

I'm also really excited about the terrible CFVY puns I get to use. :)

chapter seventy-five "Cold Brew" and seventy-six "Fair Trade" of Enter The Dragon are live (ao3 profile).

there isn't much to say about these chapters that isn't me squeeing or major endgame spoilers. I was initially so salty about the way this fic was careening off into cfvy content, but I've gotten excited about it. the fic has also recently taken a right turn to include another minor character who disappeared after the fall of beacon, and I love that too. writing this fic is so unapologetically fun now that yang isn't mired deep in depression, and I love it. just wait 'til we get to the big stuff.

I just posted what is basically 4k of ninja porn and 3k of rando worldbuilding and characterization. it's over on ao3 if that sounds like something you'd like.

apparently I suck at keeping y'all updated, because we're currently on ch 80 "Reminiscing" of Enter The Dragon (ao3 profile)

we're deep in the end game here. I'm at the point of writing where I'm elbow-deep in the big confrontation; ch 84 is where the kaleidoscope festival finally begins. and gods, does it begin.

I counted everyone and by the time the battle is over, there are going to be thirty one named participants. thirty one. and I'm not entirely sure I haven't forgotten someone. it opens with twenty-seven, and people show up as we go. that's not counting three masses I'm not giving individual names for. also, the entire stadium gets wrecked.

after the big fight there's one or two chapters of epilogue, and then ETD is finally over. it feels like I've spent forever on this fic, when it reality it's been less than two years. still, I'll be glad to see it done. I have a lot of stuff to write for other entries in this series, and I'm impatient to get to them.

spite is what's fueled me through writing all this. I want to scoop the actual show as far as some of the plot twists go, and if I don't write and publish this I'll never be able to say that I did it. one of the plot twists I already got through: winter schnee is the winter maiden. I also want to dish on the other maidens and what's been up with them, and a few other things I'll get pissy about if RWBY the show gets to first. spite, kids; never underestimate it.

been a while! I've done a lot in the meantime. here's a brief rundown:

*I finished Enter The Dragon!
*I wrote so very many other RWBY pieces. seriously, just hit up my Ao3 RWBY category, there are 72 individual pieces in there.
*wrote some Persona 5 pieces. nothing very serious, that comes later.

and lately I've been working on a Planeswalker quest I've titled Bet On Black. it starts out slow and ramps up from there. casino dealer Logan Black dies in a backalley mugging gone wrong, and wakes up with a strange man in his bedroom and a whole lot of questions.
