Expedition to the Hollow World

[Minor nitpick]
At this point in time, baring a few port cities, Africa is still mostly independent from the great European powers. The colonization of Africa by European powers wasn't really made possible until the invention of the steam ship, and the rush for Africa only took place after the widespread adoption of rifles, so that line about aweing Africa with guns might be a tad anachronistic. The Inhabitants of America would have been a more suitable candidate.

[X] Talk To Them ("Natives. Perhaps we can overawe them with our guns, as men once did to the inhabitants of Africa? They might know something useful, or we can simply claim tribute from them. Either way, let's try talking first.")

[X] Avoid Them ("Already attacked by something or another, and native to this hostile land... I doubt they have what we came to this land to seek. I judge it better to simply try to avoid them, and move past without their notice, if it should be possible.")

Not sure they're in the mood to be dealing with more of us right now. Pirates seem to have done some damage, and I'm not entirely comfortable banking on them being able (or willing) to stop to tell the difference between the two groups of strange non-beastmen coming through. Especially since we don't know how that first contact went.

The Wilderness

Captain's Log ; Entry 15
Well, that could have gone better... but it also could have gone a lot worse. The natives were quiet untrusting and generally hostile, but given the evidence that that rapscallion Captain Johnny had already made a hostile first contact that is quite understandable. It's a good thing that Lady Jane was along with us, as the natives seem matriarchal in culture, so having a female along allowed us to make a better first impression.

Still, while we may have convinced them not to attack us (or other white wo/men) on sight, they were still pretty clear about not liking us. Given the visible blunderbuss and stab wounds on some of them, I decided not to test their patience by hanging around and after the mutually inconclusive arm waving and charades were done, decided to lead my men onwards into this sunless world.

Before we left, however, we managed to get a bit of trading in. The natives seemed very interested in our steel weapons, and given that the thugs who had perished earlier had no more need of their metal daggers, I found it wise to exchange said daggers for a collection of golden coinage and small gems. The trade was quite profitable, and I do not think these natives really understand how valuable such materials are to men of civilization. Otherwise, I doubt they would have given us such valuables in return for three measly daggers.

Note to self, bring more trading goods next year before they wise up about the relative values.

After we left the native's campsite, we moved deeper into the wilderness, and the men can smell salt, and other signs of the sea air. We must be very close to the Skeleton Coast. Hopefully, we'll be able to find some of the ruins that were reported there, so we can fulfill our charge from the King of England soon, and get on with searching for more treasure.

Though our pack horse's pack is already becoming full of treasure, and soon the men will have to start help carrying it. Hum.

Note to self. Look into better treasure transportation next time. It matters not how much our ship can carry if we can't carry enough to fill it up.

Or perhaps once we find the automaton and return it to the ship, we can return to these sunless lands for a second expedition this year before leaving? Either way, there is certainly enough value in this land to make it worth returning too.

[ ] Continue onwards towards the Skeleton Coast. ("The smell of sea air is upon us. We should reach the coast by next week, baring any monster attacks or other setbacks, and hopefully will be able to find some of the ancient cities reported by Captain Brewer.")
[ ] Divert towards the mountains. ("We can see them in the distance now, rising from the fog and glowing air like titans. Great mountains, reaching towards the roof of this forsaken land. Who knows what treasures we might be able to wrest from their stony grips?")
[ ] Explore the area for Treasure. ("To stay here is to risk picking a fight with the natives, and I see no reason to risk our lives over what few treasures they have left that those pirates did not rip from their grasp.")

Suprise! This isn't actually dead yet! Now let's see people are still interested in it.

The Skeleton Coast
Captain's Log ; Entry 17

We're finally at the coast, after three weeks of marching through this sunless land's deadly wilderness. I wish I could say that the worst is behind us, but I can not. The coast of this shadowed sea is as stark and potentially deadly as the forests we have been traveling through, lined with jagged rocks like teeth and steep walls. The flows of energy upon this land can summon massive waves with little to no warning, and I've had to warn all the men to stay well away from the shoreline after we lost three of our convict workers to one.

But the shore, as with the rest of this land, holds treasure for those brave enough to seek it. Stone and sand are not the only things found on this shore, for upon reaching it we found ourselves standing in the shadow of an ancient wreck, long ago slain but some unknown peril and left hanging on the shore like a beached leviathan.

Sir Austen, our scholar, says that the ship seems reminiscent of the ancient Phoenician people's merchant ships, but such things are for wiser and more educated men then me. What is important is that the ship still held some treasure within its rotten hold, which the men soon had fetched out. While a small scattering of coin was recovered, more interesting is the glowing crystal we found within, a twin, if somewhat smaller, to the one we'd found by those predatory plants. Unlike that crystal, it was mounted in some sort of ancient device, but the passage of time and exposure to the ocean had ruined the mechanisms beyond repair or study. Still, Sir Austen has taken the scraps to learn what he can from them.

According to the reports, both from Captain Brewer's ill fated original expedition and my own scouts, ancient ruins seem to be scattered across this shore, though most seem to have already been picked over. Searching the shoreline may be risky, but the chances of finding a yet undisturbed treasure cache can not be denied. We could instead travel in either direction down the shore, seeking one of the ruined cities that Captain Brewer found. And it was within that city that the ancient automaton slew half of his men too...

[ ] Turn right, and travel down the shoreline. ("These forbidding waters will consume any foolish enough to enter them, but the ancients seem to have found it worthwhile. I can only wonder as to why.")
[ ] Turn left, and travel down the shoreline towards the mountains. ("Still visible in the distance are the stony titans that do mockery to all mortal mountains, so grand is their size. What can be found where they meet the ocean?")
[ ] Turn back, return to the wilderness to search for ancient ruins long lost under the trees. (No cover can be found here on the shore, and I dislike the treachery of the waters. Let us return to the forest and search for treasure under the embrace of the trees.")
[ ] Explore the area for Treasure. ("Ancient ruins dot the coastline, and who knows what may be hidden within a bay or concealed harbor? We might be closer to an ancient settlement then we suspect, but even lesser ruins may hold what we seek.")

(Man, almost everyone else has been rolling horrible these past two turns. The Crusaders are dead, the French are ravaged and retreating, granted with an ethertech weapon, and the Pirates are also leaving, if in their case because they've decided they have enough treasure and they want to get their hostages back to the ship before they manage to try to escape. Oh, and the Axibalan are truly pissed off. The Brothers Wickwood are the only one currently doing ok, and they've wandered into one of the highest danger areas. Of course, the Stygian Depths are also rich in treasure, so we'll see if they end up stealing a dragon egg or something.

Hum, as an experiment to see if I can get some more player interaction/activity going, could I some nice people give me a 1d100 roll titled exploration, a 1d100 roll titled Traveling, and a 1d100 roll titled luck?
