Evolution Quest - Life Finds a Way

[X] There's a group of hard-shelled creatures launching themselves into clouds of algae nearby, exposing their soft undersides as they drift back down. You could try to get behind one!

A Spore inspired quest? Interesting.

We will survive, adapt, consume, evolve...

The hard-shelled creatures show up easily on your sonar and you find yourself gravitating towards them over other potential targets. It's a matter of timing; if you can get in there before it can hit the sea floor or turn around, you have an easy kill.

--> Roll Swift Swimmer (2d6 -1)

Generation 1 Phase 1 - DEAD
As you drive upwards towards your prey, it pings frantically in a low tone. Clearly having spotted you, it fires its jets on one side of its body, swinging around in an arc to bring its armoured side down against you. You slam into it face first, biting fruitlessly at the chitinous plates, before you both hit the seabed. Unable to move and sucking sand into your intakes, you suffocate in short order.

DEAD

Well, that could have gone better.

Generation 1, Phase 1
Alright, so, you didn't make it very far at all. That's not great for you; it's survival of the fittest after all. But you're not down an out yet.

The way this phase works is simple. We look at each phase you survived and you get to make a choice regarding each one, based on the events of the Phase. You have to write in something that would have helped you do better in one of the situations you confronted in that phase.

Mechanically, that means you can do one of the following for each phase.
- Add a new Stat to your character at 0.
- Increase a Stat by 1. Difficulty goes up for every additional point you add.
- Plausibly mutate an existing Stat into different one at -1 value.
- Remove a current Stat and distribute its points to your other stats.

If you made it to the end of your natural lifespan, you can do one of the following two options instead for your last phase.
- Increase the lifespan of the creature by 1. This will add more phases, and thus more decisions later, while making it more difficult for your creature overall.
- In social animals, you can add an Elderly stage to the end of your lifespan. This is basically a low-risk, low-reward phase for a chance at more mutations.
- Increase the size of the creature by 1. Your size will change your stats when interacting with creatures larger or smaller than you, but you'll also need more food and you may lose some abilities or traits.

You must justify it, and I can veto anything that sounds overly like gaming the system.

Phase 1
Outcome - Failed

- You attempted to feed on an armoured creature, but failed, as you were unable to get behind its plates. What adaptation would help you?

[ ] Write-In

Phase 2
Outcome - Not Reached

Once you've made your decision, you roll 2d6 just like for a check. You have -1 for every Phase of your life you didn't pass. Overcoming challenges during the Phase might give you bonuses. Unless otherwise stated, all mutations are a 7 difficulty; just like regular rolls, if you roll low, but not too low, I will offer you a hard choice.

[X] The fins of the animal are slightly more rigid and flexible then other Cavatiba. This allows for a wriggling motion that can displace greater amounts of sentiment. The rigidity and flexibility of the fins also allows for the possibility of mating displays. With the increased durability that the increase of rigidity and flexibility provides to the fins, these limbs now carry the potential to aid in turning at higher speeds.
-[x] Speedy Swimmer +1

EDIT: Vote for planned mobility! I tried to write up an option that has multiple uses. The fins I came up with would be useful for digging in the same way that the fin's of this clownfish are in this video. Digging wasn't the primary thing in mind, but they definitely could help. I was thinking more along the lines of greater mobility to avoid getting plastered against the shelled organisms and dodging any potential predators. The mating display thing was just something that popped into my head last moment. Also, added the +1 Speedy Swimmer stat to indicate which stat is being increased.

I'm confused. Did we get trapped under it?
I think we just headbutt it and then died of stupidity. We basically went 'nomnomnom' to a brick wall, then suffocated under a sea of sand we weren't equipped to deal with.
But we have fins. It would have just taken a bit of wiggling to get off the seabed...
Yes, you got trapped under it. It basically held your face in the sand until you died.

Would something like becoming more of an ambush predator, or eating more plants, or being more social, be a possible solution? Changing our strategy and behavior more than finding the rock to our prey's scissors?

It was this or suggesting some sort of drill beak to crack open it's shell. I figured that wouldn't work if we didn't have fins to strong enough to spin, or even move, us with any real force.... What?! Gotta take advantage of that radial symmetry!

I need to know which of the following you want from this.

- Add a new Stat to your character at 0.
- Increase a Stat by 1.
- Plausibly mutate an existing Stat into different one at -1 value.
- Remove a current Stat and distribute its points to your other stats.

How do stats work? What are our current stats?
A stat block looks like this.

Scatria
Cavatibia jaiunus
A tube-like fish exhibiting radial symmetry. Aquatic, sexual egg-laying mesocarnivore.
Sex: Female
Appearance: Female
Age: Juvenile State (-1 to all)
Size: 1
Lifespan: 1 Juvenile, 1 Adult

Basic Attack: 0
Speedy Swimmer: 0
Sonar: 0
Light Sensitive: -1
Magnetic Navigation: -1
Immunity: 0

Special Traits
Jet Escape: Add +1 to any escape attempt. One use per Phase.
Protosocial: Other animals of the same species are not threats to you in normal circumstances.
Mesocarnivore: 3 plant feeding = 1 food point
You add your Stats directly to a roll when they are relevant. Your stats are at -1 at juvenile stages.

I am leaning more towards my suggestion increasing an existing stat, Speedy Swimmer, by 1 given the information you have provided us with.

Agreed
