Dual Pokemon Quest

[X]Ask the absol what is going on
-[X]Offer it a pokeberry

A straightforward next step.
I assume that if Jaden knows the name of a pokemon, I can check the pokedex with an expectation of decent accuracy?
There is decent accuracy yes, with absol being known to signal possible danger in an area. If an absol shows up it's a good sign to start looking for problems. They don't have as terrible a reputation as they used to, but seeing one is still considered unlucky thanks to their signaling of problems

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 5
Jaden didn't waste any time digging into his bag and pulling out a rawst berry to offer to the absol. "Hi. Can you tell us what's going on here?"

The absol sniffed. It approached slowly. Uri clearly didn't like the absol, with Sam simply being eager to test himself against the absol but willing to let it by since Jaden said so. It accepted the berry and daintily snapped it up before nudging Jaden softly. Strangely, there was no understanding of the absol. Just its actions. It seemed calm as it settled by them and studied the group, but Jaden could not grasp a single smidge of intention from them. There was just a calm about them, one that Oliver seemed happy to bask in. The zigzagoon cheerfully wriggled forward to sniff more closely at the absol. Thankfully the absol didn't seem like it was going to make Oliver into a meal.

"I don't think we've been gone that long yet." Lee replied. "Probably best to wait a little longer before returning. And we'll probably be better off if we know who we're dealing with before we go back to them."

[X] Camp in this area and start looking through the info

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 6
This was trickier than Jaden was expecting, but he wasn't giving up. He directed Sam and Uri to keep watch while he kept on trying to talk to the absol. "What are you doing here? Is there danger? What's in the cave?" The absol blinked slowly at Jaden before turning its head to start licking at a leg. Well. Presumably the absol wouldn't do that if there was danger, right? If there was danger it would be more energetic. "Are you relaxing?" The absol looked to Oliver. Oliver let out a happy series of barks and looked at Jaden, communicating that everything was fine. The absol was just chilling.

But why couldn't Jaden understand the absol? "Why is it so quiet here?" The absol blinked and turned to look at the cave. "Is it because of what's there?" The absol looked back at Jaden. This was very frustrating!

Lee Year 1 Summer Route 111 Desert - 7
They set up a camp near where the ruins had been before they blink out of sight once more. Kate's more than happy to just collapse into a pile with her pokemon and snuggle up with them. Jasper hovers near her protectively before crossing over to look over the information they'd photographed with Lee.

The gang calls themselves Team Magma apparently, and they're looking for what seems to be tools from ancient times to control legendary pokemon. The reason why is vague, and it is clear in the notes that Admin Tabitha is reporting to someone else. This is just a branch of a larger group on one mission. It's unnerving to know that criminals like this are looking into legendary pokemon. Hopefully it will amount to little. Safely contacting legendary pokemon is extremely difficult and uncommon. Only dedicated priestesses will mention regular interactions with them. There are stories the legendaries interact with others as well, but no one can confirm it happening.

Whatever treasures Team Magma is looking for here is likely to have more historical value than actual use for them. Still, the knowledge rests like a sliver in Lee's thoughts.

Sure enough, the bandits - this "Team Magma" - were a bad bunch of dudes. Everything about them struck at Lee the wrong way. Whatever their ultimate plan was, whether they could actually succeed or not, it was clear that they needed to be stopped. Even if their secret plan wasn't actually possible, Lee could only imagine how much damage they might do trying to see their plan to fruition.

Fortunately, among the things that hadn't been learned was a reason to not continue with the previous plan.

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 7
Ok, clearly for whatever reason Jaden couldn't understand the absol. So he'd have to work around this, and ask Oliver to help him. Oliver was more than happy to do so, even if there was a flare of jealousy from Sam over not being picked to help. Jaden could deal with that later. "Oliver, can you ask the absol why I can't understand them like I can other pokemon?"

Oliver happily did so. He paused, and looked very confused before turning to Jaden to really study him. Oliver sniffed curiously at Jaden. Humans weren't supposed to talk to pokemon like Jaden did. How was he doing this? Oliver liked his human, but he didn't know humans didn't talk to pokemon! Jaden did it so easily!

That made it sound like it was something going on with Jaden, and it wasn't something up with the absol. He would have to think over what that meant. "Is this place dangerous?" he asked next.

Oliver listened to the absol's answer again before turning back to repeat it to Jaden. As long as the territory was respected, this was as safe as any other place. That was the best way that Oliver could translate what the absol told him.

The trio stuck around a while longer looking around the area they had been assigned to search. Jasper actually found a shed shell from a nincada's evolution, and decided to pick it up just in case it evolved into a shedinja. There was a pretty low chance of that, as it had been discarded for a while, but it was still an interesting find.

Back at Team Magma's camp the admin was still busy trying to keep things under control, assigning them yet another area to search through in the desert. Lee cheerfully took on the duty and headed off, with the true location of the mirage ruins now struck clear as a place to search.

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 8
Right, that was it then. They were going to head into the cave. Jaden braced himself and looked to Sam. Sam perked up and took the lead. He was eager to prove himself after being left on watch while Jaden and Oliver tried to talk to the absol. The eerie stare of the absol continued to follow them as they stepped into the coolness of the cave. The temperature dropped almost immediately inside. Jaden shivered, glad that he was holding onto Oliver. It gave a bit of extra warmth.

The sound of chittering grew louder as they traveled deeper into the cave. Sam growled, just holding back calling out a challenge because Jaden had asked him to. They were supposed to be polite in their exploring.

Suddenly a blur dropped from the ceiling to in front of the group. Sam's tail flame flared higher, illuminating a glittering sableye. Bits of colored quartz could be seen freckling its body, leaving pale smoky crystal eyes to stare at them. It grinned sharp needle teeth and chittered in amusement at them. More sableyes could be heard echoing its call and moving around in the cave, curious about the group that had wandered into their home.

Lee Year 1 Summer Route 111 Desert - 9
It quickly became clear that the best times to explore the desert were early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The middle of the day was just far too hot. They were better off setting up camp temporarily to take shelter and half doze until it once more became tolerable to walk. Their luck at finding unusual things didn't turn anything up this time, but conversation helped pass the time, as did training their pokemon.

Crunchbite was more than happy to work on perfecting his sand attack. He worked on how far he could throw the sand, and how fast he could whip it about. He worked on causing a miniature cloud to hide in, and sending the sand attack off to the side instead of only straightforward. The little trapinch was thriving.

Lee asked how Kate and Jasper met. Kate was more than happy to reply, telling about how Jasper and his brother had moved into town when she was a kid with her cousin and they all grew up together. Jasper had apparently been a shy kid when they first met before coming out of his shell. It was hard to think of the tall stoic guy as such, even if he wasn't nearly as big a talker as Kate was.

Kate was very happy to describe to Lee in detail about how she met each of her pokemon. Snowflake was in fact a family pokemon that had lived with her family for generations. She was lucky that he had currently chosen to travel with her, and would likely stay with her until she was old before choosing his next human. Her dratini Aqua had actually been a prize in a contest that Jasper had won for Kate. Jasper was very smug about that saying it had just been a matter of knowing what the contest was looking for. Jasper didn't have much to say about his travels on his own, just referring back to Kate. He said she was what had made the entire journey worth it for him. The guy really was absolutely smitten.

Kate laughed and talked about how she'd met her vulpix while exploring a volcano and ended up almost falling into lava, describing the beauty of the place and how dangerous it was. She was more than happy to talk about how incredible the gardens were in Celadon, and how fun the water shows in Cerulean were to see. She loved sharing it all, and even had plenty of pictures to show. Every single one that had Kate in it also had Jasper, a silent guardian throughout her journey.

It was nice, getting to know Kate and Jasper. It continued to be nice just having other people around, really. Not just because it felt right to have other humans as traveling companions in addition to his Pokemon. Though that was an important factor in the moment as well, especially since at the moment he was de facto back to having one active pokemon, what with Archer needing to take shelter from the heat.

Lee had this feeling in his gut that there was something about this Team Magma that would not be an easy problem to deal with. Something told him that it was a problem he'd want allies for. Getting to know Kate and Jasper now, it gave him some measure of good feeling that maybe they might be people he could count on to see this thing through, if indeed his gut wasn't just being paranoid about the whole thing.

All that said, while Lee didn't say anything as of much, hearing their story, it did make him just the tiniest bit jealous. He was happy for them, of course, but it did very much serve as a reminder that compared to the 'team' that Kate & Jasper were with their own pokemon, he did remain a guest alongside them.

Hopefully that wouldn't serve as a complication if the Team Magma situation became a bigger problem than they might currently appear.

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 9
Uri was so afraid. He had to open his eyes to see the sableye in front of them. It felt like nothingness and death. How was it not there? Using physical eyesight felt so flimsy and unreal compared to the solidness that was the world through his psychic senses. But he was blind here. Still he remained. He would not abandon the rest of the team, and even through his fear there was a sliver of curiosity, and trust in Jaden to know what he was doing.

The sableye snatched up the berry greedily and devoured it in seconds. That seemed to encourage more of the sableyes to come out, chittering and looking at Jaden expectantly. The sableye that had been fed a berry laughed and pushed at one of the new sableyes, earning a sharp snap of teeth in response. Sam stood in front, holding the line against the wild pokemon. He puffed himself up just as Jaden did. They were fierce, they were warriors. If they needed to fight, they would, and they would win. Sam wasn't afraid at all of the hoard, no matter how greedy their clamor for more was.

Lee Year 1 Summer Route 111 Desert - 10
Somehow Kate seemed to pick up on Lee's drop in mood, and answered it by plastering herself to him in a hug. It was warm and soft and as welcoming as the girl herself. "Come on, let's play a game." Kate started a round of "Fortune". Each person would go round saying one sentence, either "fortunately" or "unfortunately" having to start each one. It would switch for each sentence. They had to keep the story going for as long as possible before falling apart at the absurdity of it. Kate, it turned out, was incredible at the game despite being a giggly mess, while Jasper seemed to struggle with coming up with things to add.

Crunchbite was more than happy to keep up his training on sand attack, figuring out how to make a solid quicksand trap if he whirled the sand up quick enough. He even learned to use the sand to hide himself and give him cover to bury under. Something which drew the attention of a traveling pair of cacnea. They were very quick to attempt to do the same thing, to rather poor results. Kate was utterly in love with the acts of the wild pokemon, offering water to them and trying to coax them close enough to pet.

Of course, this upended when they returned to the bandit camp for their next search area. Admin Tabitha wasn't as distracted this time, and looked up sharply as they approached the desk. "Who are you?" he growled. He quickly released a camerupt.

"New recruits," Jasper offered smoothly.

"You're not," the admin growled. "New recruits aren't sent here. Arrest them!" Immediately grunts turned to the trio to dogpile them.

It was kind of unbelievable the kind of walking embodiment of sunshine itself that Kate was. Was she even capable of negative emotion? Lee was pretty certain that if nothing else, her positivity was almost like some kind of disease - well, whatever the good version of a disease was - that was incapable of not being contagious. It left him wanting to give her some kind of appreciation hug in return, but he held himself to just giving her a thankful pat on the shoulder, lest he accidentally spark any of the wrong ideas in Jasper's head.

For all he knew, Jasper was well past used to this kind of thing by now, but still better to play it safe until they'd had ample opportunity for some kind of true group dynamic to develop and he no longer really felt like a guest outsider tagalong.

In retrospect, Kate's success in the game was kind of obvious. She may have been a bit of a walking disaster waiting to happen, but it was already becoming clear she had social skills out the wazoo.

While pleased by Crunchbite's success continuing to hone his Sand Attack into an increasingly useful utility skill, it came with some minor dampening with the arrival of the Cacnea. Their situation being what it was, he wanted to conserve his Pokemon as much as he was able for the time being, and adding one of the cactus Pokemon to his lineup didn't immediately spark any of the right kind of interest necessary for him to justify trying to catch one.

He settled for making the most of the entertainment value to be had from watching Kate's ever-positive attitude interact with the Pokemon.

Which did leave him to wonder - she'd successfully acquired valuable information from oversnuggling the Vulpix at the Mirage ruins.

Perhaps if she successfully make friends with these Cacnea, perhaps they might offer up some kind of useful discovery as well.

[X][cacnea] Observe the cacnea
-[X] And also Kate's interactions with them. Possibly any interaction Crunchbite might have with them as well.
--[X] And see if maybe there might be some kind of benefit to be had from Kate making friends.

"You're not," the admin growled. "New recruits aren't sent here. Arrest them!"

Lee Hinsu went wide-eyed as certain words passed through his head that were neither proper for polite company and he knew full well his mother would have given him a solid scolding about if she'd ever heard them coming out of his mouth.

"Crunchbite, Cover! Sand Attack!" Lee ordered, doing the first thing that came to his mind.

While he certainly wouldn't have hoped that Crunchbite's training would have proven so useful so soon, he wasn't going to question the fortuitous turn of events, even if it meant the plan he'd thought was going so splendidly had instead fallen apart so spectacularly.

[X][Team Magma] Escape!

Jaden Year 1 Summer Mt Pyre - 10
Jaden was here for adventure. He wasn't backing down, not even in the face of a bunch of excited greedy wild sableyes. "If you want berries, we need to make a deal," he declared. "We're here for adventure! To explore! To battle! To see new things! So if you want berries, you gotta offer something!"

The sableyes chittered at his speech. One of them puffed up and sent a shadow swerving at the group to try and intimidate them, only for Sam to cut through it with flames. The sableye sulked and backed down. If all of them attacked together they could take out the trainer and his team, but intimidating them or trying one on one wasn't going to work. And they wanted what Jaden was offering. This was something interesting. Killing them wouldn't be.

The sableyes talked among each other. A few of them started fighting with each other over what to do, tearing into each other with screeches and angry yowls. Others ran further into the cave. One came back and offered a large amethyst to Jaden. Another stepped forward and offered a battle.

Lee Year 1 Summer Route 111 Desert - 11
The cacnea did let Kate briefly pet one of them before retreating. They were quite happy to accept the water, but not so much into socializing. Truthfully the cacnea being as friendly as they were was a bit of an anomaly. Wild pokemon tended to not like strangers unless they had done something for the pokemon. Kate's kindness and sincerity was enough to buy a friendly visit with them, but not enough to allow the closeness that Kate so clearly desired to pour out on every pokemon she came near. Her own pokemon were, of course, more than happy to step in to fill that gap while the cacnea competed playfully with Crunchbite in how to create small dustdevils of sand around themselves. Crunchbite was quick to prove himself much better at that task, having a body much better designed for manipulating the sand.

>>>

Crunchbite didn't hesitate on the order, immediately sending the sand up. Only it wasn't a sand attack, but a small unstable sandstorm, blanketing and hiding the group. Jasper immediately released his team and ordered them to cover their retreat. He didn't hesitate to pick Kate up and just start running. He wasn't going to risk Kate's clumsiness kicking in at the worst possible moment. Her haunter didn't hesitate in spreading his aura out along with Jasper's houndoom's to make it even worse. A few tents were set on fire as they ran into the desert.

They got out ahead, but the criminals didn't give up chasing them. Why should they? The trio was in a desert. They could only run for so long before the heat and lack of water would tire them out, and the desert was open with almost zero cover.

Plans to evade capture?

Lee couldn't help but feel like their present predicament was a predicament for which he was entirely to blame.

It had seemed like such a good plan at the time. It had seemed to be working. But it turned out it had only been because of ignorance from people who didn't know what was actually going on.

And now, because of Lee's plan and trying to push it too hard, he'd put his new friends in danger. So now he needed to figure a way out of it. And unfortunately, he got the impression that meant having to fight.

[X] Inquire about plan feasibility.
-[X] If Crunchbite used Sand Attack to provide cover and otherwise give support, might Jasper be able to get the drop on the Team Magma pursuers with his Pokemon?
