Dual Pokemon Quest

Lee Year 2 Winter Mt Pyre - 5
An old worn teddy bear turned to look at Lee in response. Wisps of cold ghostly power came from the toy. The banette was clearly still new, the toy it had possessed still intact instead of slowly torn and sewed back up by the banette as the ghost pokemon grew in power beyond what a simple toy could hold. One day they would fully merge, the cloth forming the toy woven more from the ghost's energy than any living fabric. The banette's glare was baleful as it looked at the human that had come into the dead's night. It didn't make a single sound, but the weight of the banette's presence increased. Archer was quick to move and place himself in front of Lee, Nova stretching up and preparing herself to fight as well.

Jaden Year 2 Winter Rustboro - 3
Jaden was happy to spend time poking around through the tech. He even called Uri out to look at it with him. The teleportation was pretty cool. Uri examined it curiously, noting that it seemed to be tapping into the psychic net but wasn't properly attached or using it. Possibly because it wasn't alive, and so could only perform the programmed action. It was impressive, and Uri was quick to ask if they could get some for him to play with.

The ghost camera was just as cool. Jaden couldn't figure out how it worked at all. He had fun looking around the store with it. Maybe this could be used to watch ghosts back at Mt Pyre! Or just out in the country. Oh! They could use it to solve mysteries! If it worked. The company seemed pretty confident selling this, Jaden just couldn't sense anything that might allow that to happen.

Jaden hadn't really thought too much about how the different pokeballs worked before, as he knew that every pokeball was set to handle any pokemon. It was only looking at the variety of specialties that he realized that the basic pokeballs were rather generic. They worked for any pokemon, but that didn't mean that they were the best. It hadn't mattered too much, as Jaden tended to keep his team out a huge amount of the time. Still, he decided it wouldn't hurt to switch over to a lureball for Kahra. A water based pokeball would surely be more comfortable for her, and she spent a lot more time in her pokeball than anyone else.

The discussion on the double battle the team had practiced that evening had Sam practically crowing his superiority. Jaden had a sense that he might need to remind Sam that he still had a long way to go. The charmander was strong, but he needed to remember he wasn't the only team member. Oliver had been a key part of the victory. Oliver was happy to let out rumbles as his parts were discussed, and Uri was more than happy to play out the fight for everyone to watch again. Kahra seemed entranced by it all, if not quite at a breakthrough of understanding. She saw something in the team.

When Jaden finally started settling into bed he decided to meditate with Uri first. Uri was thrilled to take the chance to tap into the psychic network alongside Jaden. It was a quick short plunge back into the psychic realm. Jaden had forgotten how it felt, how everything was so close, and he could see everything. It looked different from this view. He could see Sam eagerly reaching out to follow after, and Jaden automatically reached out to pull him up after him. Several abras and kadabras greeted their arrival. Jaden could even reach everyone from the safari, the giant xatu reaching out and greeting him gently and inviting him into the night's game of spinning maths and tales.

"We're just here to watch the stars. We're not interested in trouble."

Lee's words were firm, but without any weight of threat or malice behind them as he tried to play 'good cop' to the 'bad cop' that Archer and Nova were presenting. He very noticeably did not give any indication for the pair to stand down as he tried to put forth a very clear image that they weren't going to start a fight, but they'd be more than willing to finish one if the Banette was determined to pick one.

"You're welcome to watch with us if you can promise to play nice."

[X] Refrain from starting a fight if possible, try to make clear they're not interested in fighting if they don't have to, and they can all get along if the Banette is willing to try.
-[X] Be ready and alert to fight in self defense if the Banette insists on getting aggressive.

[X] if uri wants a teleporter, get him one
[X] tell the giant Xatu and the Abras about the dreamer, whose name is groudon and he made an island with dragon magma
[X] check out the local gym or trainers group

Jaden Year 2 Winter Rustboro - 4
Uri was very excited about the teleporter pad that Jaden bought for him to play with, clearly making plans for what to do with it in his spare time.

The psychic pokemon were deeply intrigued when Jaden shared what he had learned about Groudon. The pokemon even examined him, and found an imprint left on Jaden. They briefly created a layer to show the imprint on, with the unique impression of earth left within it, and showed how Groudon would be able to use that to track Jaden and know what he was up to. It was unusual on multiple layers. This wasn't a psychic imprint on Jaden, and Groudon was not awake. Groudon also was a legendary pokemon, far beyond any of the pokemon in the psychic net.

There were debates about what could be done with the connection, and thoughts about creating imprints to allow tracking of friends without going into the net. Most of this was theoretical, as they were content with the psychic net and didn't feel any particular need to work outside of it. Why would they when the psychic net was so welcoming to them? Sam at least seemed intrigued by the thought, ruminating on how it might be similar to how he connected with Jaden.

In the morning Jaden headed down to the gym to check out the trainers. Surprisingly enough, most of them were around his age. Even more surprising, the trainers Jaden saw had small teams. It was only looking at the group that Jaden remembered that Rustboro was a traditional starter gym. While anyone at any level could challenge Rustboro, it was a popular kick off point for trainers who were challenging the gyms for the first time. A sense of pride filled Jaden as he looked at them and reflected on his own journey. He had a lot of wisdom he could share with these trainers.

-[X] ask Zahra if she wants to have a go, if the kid is willing to keep the battle friendly and low key.
--[X] let her pick her teammate
-[X] Coach Zahra on cooperation during a battle

Lee had tried to play nice, and it hadn't gone well. The Banette's shriek hit him hard, leaving little room to risk giving the ghost any more ground.

"Archer, Astonish!" Lee said weakly as he tried to give orders while still recovering.

[X] First (Second?) strike against the Banette, open with Archer attacking with Astonish.
-[X] Archer try to keep the Banette off-balance, but mostly try to buy time for Nova to recover and join the fight.
--[X] When Nova able to fight, have Archer harass with series of Leafage while flying while Nova provides control and support through Ember and Confuse Ray.

Lee Year 2 Winter Mt Pyre - 7
Archer responded rapidly blasting out an astonish and flying up to start battering the banette with a rain of leafage. Nova stepped up just as quickly, responding to Lee's commands and unleashing her fire and doing her best to confuse the banette.

The battle stirred the grounds. More ghost pokemon began to wake up, drawn in by the battle that was happening. The banette was doing well in trading back and forth with Nova and Archer, if held at a stalemate. Perhaps if Lee was particularly clever he could turn it around. But there were more ghost pokemon being drawn in. He would have to choose what to do wisely.

Jaden Year 2 Winter Rustboro - 5
Jaden challenged the kid with a mudkip and a rattata to a battle. They were quick to accept. They were more hesitant once Jaden asked if they would be alright battling his magikarp, but it being a double battle persuaded them. There would be an actual battle, not just prodding the poor magikarp.

Zahra looked better and more alert. She was not yet back to full health, but she was getting closer and more energetic. With Jaden's help she understood what was being asked, and was quick to select Uri. She was closest to the kadabra, and he let her move far more easily on land. The trainer was super impressed to see that Jaden had a kadabra, and had about a hundred questions about him. Jaden was of course more than happy to boast about his pokemon, but they had a battle to do first!

Zahra did well, considering the difficulties that came with being a magikarp. She splashed her enemies from her water bubble, and was enthusiastic about tackling when in reach. Uri carried most of the battle, but it was obvious that Zahra was thriving in this chance. Unfortunately the trainer proved to be quick at commanding their mudkip, and it took Zahra out. At least that left Uri clear to finish the battle in a win. When Zahra woke up again she was clearly eager to go again, even if that wasn't a good idea for her.

"Fathom, Water Gun!" Lee ordered.

At present, the fight was a stalemate. He needed something to break that stalemate. He wasn't sure what was up with Crunchbite, the Trapinch seemed 'out of it'.

But perhaps that would work to his advantage. By having Fathom get involved, that might just be the key to distract the Banette long enough that Archer and Nova could knock the Banette on the backfoot, seize the initiative, and create an opening for Archer or Nova - or both - to score a much needed critical hit that would secure them a much needed quick victory.

[X] Have Fathom use Water Gun to distract the Banette and create an opening
-[X] Have Archer and Nova use the intended opening to seize control of the battle and finish the fight quickly

Lee Year 2 Winter Mt Pyre - 8
Fathom was delighted to follow Lee's order and spit water at the banette. The banette seemed shocked to be hit with an underpowered watergun, giving space for Archer and Nova to come in and slam hard on the banette. They finished taking it down, the banette retreating with an unearthly wail of pain.

Several gastlys approached the group with a grin on their face.

Jaden Year 2 Winter Rustboro - 6
Jaden set out a meal in their room in the pokemon center. His team was happy to see it. It wasn't just their ordinary food, no. Jaden had put effort into it, mixing in slices of berries and adding in extra flourishes where he could to make it look even fancier and cooler. He had put in effort for his own meal even, a large sub that was maybe a bit too big for him to eat but looked super delicious.

Jaden was quick to start retelling the group's adventures, telling about what he saw in the meteor lab and how cool the different stones they had were. He hadn't been able to crack the pink one, but he knew he could have, if there hadn't been glass and a ton of scientists in the way. Sam chimed in with tales of his valiance and great prowess in battle, describing how he saved the day. Oliver's contributions were a lot funnier, with the linoone fully ready with slapstick humor in his own tales. And he wasn't always the one targeted by the slapstick. Sam looked shocked at being targeted by Oliver's jokes, the linoone as fearless and playful as when he'd first been caught.

Uri was more than happy to tell about jokes and games he'd played in the psychic realm, even if the majority went over everyone else's heads. He was happy, that was what counted. Even Zahra joined in, though her tales were entirely focused on the long trip to the waterfall and how close she was. Soon, she promised. She would get strong, and she would be ready.

Zahra's sense of drive towards his goal infected everyone. They would do their best too! Jaden was ready as he headed to the gym and to his class on defense. The teacher welcomed everyone and began. "The offensive is often seen as the most important part of pokemon battling. If you can't hit your opponent you can't win. But neglecting building your team's defense can be just as detrimental as failing to train at all."

The teacher covered how to train pokemon to safely block blows to minimize damage, and demonstrated how to alter the training for different body types. Winged pokemon would defend differently than bipedal pokemon who would defend differently from quadrupedal. Jaden sat and watched. He hadn't expected it to be exactly like this, especially when the teacher began to go over how the trainer could move with their pokemon to keep themselves safe in a shifting environment. Battles against other trainers had set limits, but wild battles could have pokemon coming at any angle.

The teacher promised to put aside time for the students to practice the techniques she showed every other day, and Jaden was thrilled to get to move around with the training. Almost his entire team save for Zahra were trained to dodge first, and Zahra only wasn't trained that way because her training was still so fresh. Sam was eager to get the chance to tank blows and prove himself. Uri tended to simply use psychic barriers. Oliver proved to have the most talent for it, with his determination to dig down and hold his ground whenever necessary.

The best news was at the end of the week Zahra finally passed Nurse Joy's check up as returned to full health.

Lee didn't want to assume that the Gastlys were hostile like the Banette.

He certainly hoped they weren't hostile like the Banette.

However, he couldn't rule out the very real possibility that this area was just 'off limits' and the only thing that would be accomplished by sticking around would be to keep fighting a continual onslaught of ghosts.

"We don't want to fight." Lee said to the Gastlys, trying to present himself as non-threatening as possible. "We just want to look at the stars."

[X] Try to reach a peaceful resolution with the Gastly.
-[X] Try to use Aura to project a non-threatening, unaggressive presence.
--[X] If the Gastly insist on fighting or being hostile, take the hint and try to retreat back to safety.

[x]Challenge the gym
-[x]Since this is a gym trending towards rock type, the goal is at least one of the team getting ahead and making sure each next teammate starts with a debilitated opponent. The exception is Sam, who is limited to growl. Sam should try to make the best use of his dragon moves, using them up strategically based on how well he's able to stay in the fight by dodging and taking hits. If he gets a good matchup as his first opponent, great, otherwise Uri should be able to follow up capably.
-[x]Sam first, starting with dragon dance, then dragon breath, then only try to conserve dragon breath if he's good for health by using slash and growl.
-[x]Uri next. Try for confusion and hypnosis. Drag the fight out and hope to take out n+1 pokemon while exhausting the last one that Uri can safely fight.
-[x]Oliver follows, focusing on pin missile until he gets weak, then sand attack to prep the field for Zahra
-[x]Zahra last, tackling as she can and with discussion beforehand that she shouldn't rely on her type advantage because the gym leader will be tricky. If the team makes if far enough, then the fight will come down to her being smart as much as aggressive.
--[x]Concede before she comes out of her pokeball if the fight is going quite poorly.
--[x]If the battle is going really well, swap pokemon around so they all get to participate.

The gastlys grinned widely. Some of them laughed. They all drifted closer. Crunchbite pressed tight against Lee. Nova held flames in her mouth, and Archer fluffed up greatly as he settled on Lee.

The gastlys didn't attack. They settled around the group. They seemed more interested in watching the group among them than the stars, but they didn't attack. It was cold.

[ ]Write-in

While the cold did bother Lee, if the Gastly weren't going to pick a fight, Lee wasn't going to start one. He pulled his Pokemon in close for group warmth, then tried to resume enjoying the stars with them.

[X] Resume watching the stars.
-[X] Pull in Pokemon for group warmth.
--[X] Does Lee have a jacket or a blanket with him he can use?
-[X] Maybe try getting the Gastly involved in the stargazing and see if they might be inclined to be more friendly?
-[X] Be alert to the cold in case there's something underhanded going on.

Lee Year 2 Winter Mt Pyre - 10
Archer didn't resume watching the stars, focused intensely on the gastlys settled around them. Nova and Crunchbite were more than happy to join in cuddling with Lee. He pulled the blanket they'd been lying on partly up to cover them even more.

It was difficult to engage with the wild gastlys. There was a sense of curiosity and hunger coming off of all of them. It didn't help that Lee was starting to feel tired from the late night and the cold. The wild gastlys didn't seem to understand much of the group's presence, just watching in fascination for the living that were within their domain.

Jaden Year 2 Winter Rustboro Gym- 6
Jaden decided that he was ready to challenge the gym. His first gym battle, it was wild to think he'd been traveling for almost a year and this was it. It was exciting to think too. He talked with his team making sure they were all prepared before they headed out to the gym. It turned out to be super cool, with an entire maze set in stone that he had to work his way through to reach the gym leader.

"Welcome challenger!" Roxanne beamed brightly at Jaden, bright and colorful and full of energy. "I hope you've kept up your lessons, or you're going to be schooled!"

"I'm ready!" Jaden shouted.

"Great! Since this is your first badge you'll be battling two of my pokemon in a one on one match."

"Wait, can we have three? I have a team of four, I'd like them all to get a chance to battle," Jaden explained.

Roxanne blinked. "Oh. Well, I can adjust for that! Sure!" She smiled. "Let's get started!"

Jaden eagerly sent out Sam. The charmander snorted and stamped his feet bracing for battle as Roxanne tossed out a geodude. Jaden called for Sam to start up his dragon dance. Roxanne was surprised to see the charmander using such an advanced move, and quickly countered by sending her geodude in to disrupt Sam's dancing. Sam quickly became frustrated at the interruptions, switching over to using dragon breath to completely take the geodude out. It was a tough opponent, but Sam was fierce and managed to knock it out with only some bruising.

Jaden switched over to Uri as Roxanne sent out a nosepass. She looked thoughtful as the kadabra appeared and nodded. The nosepass sent out a thunderwave, slowing Uri down with the paralysis condition. Uri's eyes gleamed as he continued to fight despite that, throwing things at the nosepass the best he could. Hitting the nosepass with confusion turned the battle around, and he brought in a win. Jaden cheered, and Roxanne let out her final pokemon: a relicanth.

"Alright Oliver, set the stage for Zahra," Jaden told his linoone. The goofy pokemon eagerly splashed into the small pool the relicanth had and set about teasing the relicanth and weakening it. When Jaden felt it had enough he switched it over for Zahra and sent his magikarp out. The magikarp was confused, but Jaden linked up with her and informed her it was a battle. Her mind sharpened. Jaden felt the drive within her ignite and she threw herself forward.

Roxanne stared in shock as Zahra knocked out the relicanth and lit up, evolving into a gyarados. "Well. You've definitely earned your first badge."

Zahra let out a roar and reared up. She leaped - and took out one of the walls forming the maze.

Lee Year 2 Winter Mt Pyre - 11
The gastlys were disappointed when the group left. They followed Lee for a portion down the trail before turning and heading back to the graveyard.

One stayed and settled into Lee's shadow, watching and eager to see more.

Lee took his team out for a day to relax and play down at the base of Mt Pyre, close to the beach and out of the claim the ghost pokemon held across Mt Pyre. Fathom was thrilled to get to swim properly, and was more than happy to spit water at everyone who came close to him. Archer responded by playfully teasing at the magikarp. Nova wanted to play at pouncing, but Crunchbite seemed determined to ruin her plans with the way he stood like a statue.

Lee grew concerned that his trapinch was in fact sick, a fear that heightened when Crunchbite's skin split open. Lee rushed forward, only for a bright light to come from him. A bright vibrava pushed his way out of Crunchbite's old skin and stretched. New wings that weren't quite done yet flexed and fluttered behind him. He let out another soft cry and burrowed partly into the sand as the team was brought to a halt to stare at this surprise.
