He is a Devil, I thought it was only fair that he should be the first properly evil character we've met. Don't worry, Nate has more potential then you guys give him credit for. He could wind up either a champion of justice or atop a throne of skulls (though most likely he'll die horribly in a dungeon somewhere and spend the next thousand years trapped as a beurocrat, which is a fearsome hell indeed.
I hate to ruin a perfectly moral solution to the problem, but it has to be a humanoid. My apologies if I've been less then upfront with that relevant information.
The first prospect is a big fellow by the name of Bran Joricson. He's currently working at the lumber yard chopping wood, but he's not using a normal hatchet. The man literally cuts down trees with a battle axe [...], but he's… well he's slow. If we took him on we'd have to take care of basically everything but the fighting for him, but the good news is he's definitely too dumb to know what a vampire is, even when Kyu goes all bitey bitey
Is there a potion we can buy that can reliably knock him out? ('paralysing poison', perhaps?)
Although Kyu's bite itself has some hypnotizing properties, so maybe it's not needed?
Can Kyu drink enough blood from an unconscuous person - without killing them - to stabilize herself, allowing more time for problem-solving?
We'll write off the weakness from the blood loss as a particularly vicious hangover. Especially if we downplay the poison as the worst beer we'd had ordered in a tavern. He is not bright... and we just discussed partnership with him, so he should be open to dialogue.
Just... order the drinks in your room, invite him in, and close the door behind you.

Are we trusting in Kyu to have self control is the better question. How much blood is actually required is entirely unknown. The fact that she is still alive is in fact merely conjecture that Mengsk is telling the truth.
[x] Invite Bran Joricson for a chat to privately discuss the upcoming job, render him unconscious (either by helping him drink himself under the table, or by more expeditious means), then feed the vampire and hope you can pry her off before she drinks him dry.
-[x] Apply healing potions.
-[x] Compensate him afterwards? We'll see how it goes.
How long would it take? Any corners we can cut?
I mean, we can probably cast Darkness and whack him on the head, but that might take some explaining afterwards.
So we can get Kyu into town easily enough. At that point, we have access to Monika and all our gear. Monika can do some 'errands' if we want, or we can get Bran Joricson and give him tons of alcohol. Problem is that I doubt he'll be quite enough, no matter how big he is. So we'll need others as well. Maybe visit a bar, and offer to let any drunks sleep at our place until they're conscious/sober?
Can Nathan order Kyu to stop feeding? Or are master commands not that magical?
Actually, question, how much blood to get Kyu to not going to die today levels?
We could just pay for people to bleed into a bowl for her. She normally drinks pretty tiny amounts.
You will need more blood than is contained within a single human body (more than 5 liters) to push her into "not dieing immediately" range. Exactly how much is unknown to you.
yup. Demiurge's happy farm is an effective strategy. The result of having over 5 liters removed and then forcibly regrown with healing potions injected intermittently would be devastating, but non-lethal... probably.
Excellent. I get to be a little like Asmodeus-senpai, and the rest will get to keep their goody-two-shoes card, if a little faded and scratched in places.

Well, the whole point of making him unconscious is to not let him know he was assisting us (and wouldn't talk about it. If he's stupid enough to not know what Kyu is, he is also stupid enough to not get why we are hush-hush about it)...
Unless you want to hire him for that explicit purpose, in which case we could skip the 'unconscious' part.

Does this seem better? I'm not sure that Bran and HP potions will be enough, hence the last line.
Do we need to specify that we're walking into the town without killing any guards?
Do we look sketchy enough from having been on fire and carrying a burnt box that it might raise questions? Particularly from the guards?
Are we actually capable of rendering Bran unconscious through 'more expeditious means?'
Do we have enough healing potions to make sure Bran can give as much blood as a full human or more without dying?

Find out the answer to all these questions and more in the next exciting episode of dragon ball Z! I'm giving voting another 12 hours, but It appears a consensus has been made.
^for above, don't worry too much about specifics, just need a general course of action, the characters are smart enough to smooth out the edges of the plan.

Well then, might as well cast my vote. If Bran manages to survive and recover in a decent amount of time, do we actually want to consider recruiting him? I think people were saying they wanted another arcane caster in the party, but if Kyu gets severe enough lasting injuries it might be harder for her to tank. On the other hand, Lisa is part wizard, so she might be able to use some battlefield control, which could help make up for our tank being lackluster.
Also, I haven't seen any indication of cantrips existing here. That means we'll want to make sure that Lisa actually has something valuable she can do without spending resources. Otherwise we're back at 1e, where the wizard sat in the back once they were out of spells. That doesn't seem like something we want considering that the last quest had multiple fights in it.

Closing out the voting at this point. It's the weekend so anticipate a reasonably quick turn around for next update.
Edit:
Wow, sometimes the block is real. In order to force myself past it, I'll be giving myself the deadline of tonight for next update. Expect it posted sometimes within next 12 hours.

Victory over the dreaded writers block! Thank you artificial self-imposed timelines and the creators of death wish coffee!
I'm going to edit this lump of free flowing thought and push out a product tonight!
The bubble of protective darkness around me would not last forever, but it would afford me the time I needed to recover the chest lid, which had been blasted into the nearby bushes by the now vanished devil. I resealed the chest and filled in the holes with clumps of grass and earth, managing to conceal the precious contents within from the sun before the inky black globe dispersed.
Moving slowly and carefully, so as not to undue my hasty patches I dragged the box back into the woods. The container was too damaged for me to try and bring it back into town, so I settled for concealing it in the brush so that no passerby's who might have been attracted by the horrible screams would be tempted to investigate. Having ensured the chest containing my badly wounded friend was as safe as I could make it in the limited time I had, I reluctantly abandoned Kyu and began racing back to town.
I have never been a clever man, but thankfully I had a fallback plan for times like this; one that had never failed me before.
"So you're telling me that you've spent the last three days playing with an unbound devil and were surprised when it harmed someone you cared about?"
Green eyes glared at me in incredulous disbelief as Monika put aside the assortment of locks she had been prying at with her knife and lock picks in order to give me her full uninterrupted angry attention.
"And you have no idea what to do and want me to somehow come up with a plan to get a huge quantity of human blood without harming anyone or raising any suspicion; and you need me to do it all in less than an hour, is that about right?"
She began messaging the bridge of her nose, looking as though she was in physical pain. Normally I'd be tempted to slither away from such a blistering display of open contempt, but Kyu's life was on the line; so I swallowed my pride and answered:
"Yes. Can you do it?"
Pulling a large flask out of her drawer to take a long swig, she wiped her mouth and said with a serious tone.
"Alright, so here's what we're going to do."
********
My sweat was causing my shirt to cling to my body as I bent over, panting under the shade of the forest just outside the sawmill. Planning out what I would say as I recovered from my run, I heard before I saw the snapping of branches being scraped and dragged along the path opposite the sawmill from me. A behemoth of a man in sleeveless hides strained against the iron loops of chain wrapped tightly around his chest tied at the other end to the trunks of three mid-sized trees, which he pulled along behind him as though he were a draft horse. The man, who was too large to be anyone but Bran, had a happy expression in his icy blue eyes as he continued to drag the incredible load steadily towards the sawmill, his long blonde hair flowing freely over the handle of the well-worn great axe strapped to his back.
Bran stopped pulling in order to wave greetings to an older man with a receding grey hairline and leather miller's smock, who came bolting out of the sawmill issuing a string of profanity.
"By all the god's Bran, what the hell do you think you're doing?"
The large man tilted his head in confusion as he looked at the aging miller before issuing a slow baritone reply "I have brought death to your enemies and dragged their corpses to be laid at your feet."
The Miller stared at him mouth agape "What? No, you damned fool, I mean why in the nine hells did you chop down our apple trees? I planted that orchard eight years ago!"
More confusion passed over Bran's expression as he let the chains fall to the ground, "Is this tribute not pleasing to you?"
"NO! Why on earth would you think I'd be pleased that you chopped down my apple trees!?"
Bran's face went entirely blank before animating once more with a look of shameful realization, "I understand. You are small and the trees are many. You have made truce with your enemies and I have brought dishonor to your clan with my attack."
The massive man's shoulders and head slumped down as the Miller continued to berate him. "This is it! This is the last straw, I don't know why I ever allowed Miriam to convince me to let you stay with us, but it ends today! Go pack your things and leave, I never want to see you back here again, you hear me?"
Defeated, Bran stepped over the chains and sulkily made his way into the Mill.
My thoughts immediately turned to how I could best take advantage of Bran's misfortune, which tweaked at my conscience a bit, but there were only so many problems I could solve; and right now saving Kyu came first.
It wasn't long before the large man came out of the mill, still sulking, with an overstuffed pack over one shoulder, leaving room for his axe on the other. I allowed him to wander off a bit away from the mill before catching up to him so that the Miller wouldn't see our conversation.
"Excuse me, are you Bran Joricson?"
Stopping to look at me over his shoulder Bran slowly turned to face me "I am Bran the exile, do not shame my Father by speaking his name alongside my own."
"Right… Bran then. I'm Nathan Graves, my friend Monika said she spoke with you earlier and that you'd be willing to help us out with a few jobs?"
A moment of hesitation passed. "I do not remember this, but there are many things I do not remember; as has always been the way. You would ask an exile such as myself to wage war alongside you?"
"Not quite how I'd have put it, but yeah close enough. Their is actually something I need your help with right away, we can talk it out over drinks if you're interested."
I could tell that I had him the moment I mentioned drinking as his entire face lit up revealing a perfect white smile.
"This I can do."
I was worried that I would have to slow down to accommodate Bran, since he was carrying literally everything he owned with him, but as we came to the thicket where I'd left Kyu behind it was me who was gasping for air; as Bran followed behind me looking barely effected by our three mile run.
We ran into Monika, who was working in an open flapped tent, setting up some things just beyond where I could see deeper inside. Getting up from her preparations she came out of the tent and dusted herself off before pulling out a pair of bottles, offering one to Bran as she tore off the cork of the other with her teeth and took a deep pull.
"Bran! I'm glad Nathan was able to convince you to join us. You probably don't remember me, but I'm Monika, we met last week."
Bran accepted the bottle, gladly downing nearly half the fifth in a single swig, before analyzing my friend.
"You have the scars of a warrior, and flame touched hair. War chief Graves has done well to take you for a wife, may you bear him a dozen sons."
I cringed, unsure whether Monika would pull out a knife or not after that statement. To my surprise, she dismissed it with a happy smile while pulling out a handkerchief that had been sitting in a small vial of fluid before tossing the fluid soaked rag to Bran.
"Hey Bran, can you do me a favor and tell me what that cloth smells like to you?"
The confused Barbarian did as instructed pressing the handkerchief to his face before toppling to the ground with a loud thud.
Monika wasted no time recovering the bottle of vodka he'd dropped, stoppering it up before it could spill out. "Yeah, I kinda thought it smelled like chloroform too. Thanks!"
The wink she gave, arm outstretched with fingers in a V as she tilted her head, was entirely at odds with the fact that the man she was addressing was currently face down in the dirt.
"Monika! What the hell, you can't just drug somebody like that! What's he going to think when he wakes up?"
Monika put away the bottles before walking back into the tent.
"Oh please, the man has the worst case of memory loss I've ever seen, probably the result of some minor brain damage or something. Anyway even if he does remember being drugged, he's not going to understand what happened, and even if he does no one's going to believe anything he says anyway, it's half the reason I picked him for this. Now hurry up and drag him into the tent we don't have time for this."
I did as she said, flipping Bran onto his back and dragging him by his shoulders towards the open tent. I guess it made sense that he suffered from some memory loss, I couldn't think of any other reason he would forget someone as visually striking as my angry redheaded friend.
Dragging the massive body into the tent Monika had erected I noticed that in addition to the chest containing Kyu, which was still closed; she had set up a cot in the center of the room, a water barrel in the corner and 6 leather pouches I recognized as being for the storage of healing potions sitting next to a pair of injection needles and a large metal funnel.
As I strained to hoist Bran up onto the cot, he must have weighed at least 250 pounds, Monika began carefully lifting the tiny vampire, easing her head to a rest on the corner of the chest.
"Hurry up, we really don't have much time here. I know you told me it was bad, but I didn't realize how ridiculous this is; she has 3rd degree burns on over 80% of her body, and they reach down into the muscle and fat well below the skin, if she was human she'd most certainly be dead by now, as it is the only way I can tell that she's alive is the tiny sound of her subconscious thoughts and they've been fading off and on for the last half hour now."
I had to force the vomit back as I watched Monika take a knife and cut open the tiny vampire's lips that had been seared shut by the unnatural fire of the sun. The blackened lump of flesh crumbled and flaked away with a sickening sound as my friend quickly and professionally carved a hole into her face, revealing the clenched teeth beneath.
With the same surgical speed and precision she grabbed Bran's right arm and cut a slice across his wrist, opening up a small wound over the vein which bled freely down his hand, before letting it rest over the hole she'd gouged into Kyu's mouth.
"Ok, so she still isn't responding, but the blood is draining into her stomach and not pooling up in her mouth, so we're doing good so far. When I give the signal I need you to remove his wrist and keep pressure on the wound with this rag, in the meantime start tying her down with this rope, in case she wakes up and starts freaking out."
I attempted to gently tie her wrists together, but when I applied even the slightest of strain on the rope, chunks of blackened flesh slid off her arms and reddish pus began to ooze out, so I settled for tying the rope around the chest itself, forming a net of rope.
Minutes passed as Bran steadily bled into the mouth of the unresponsive vampire.
"You said his memory loss was half the reason you picked Bran, what was the second half?"
Monica looked up from her perch over Bran where she was listening for his pulse and replied. "The human body isn't built to handle this much stress, Bran is the only man in town I've seen who might be big enough to survive the amount of bleeding we're going to put him through."
Going back to monitoring his heartbeat, Monika called out. "Alright, now, take his wrist and keep pressure on the wound."
I did as she said, removing his bleeding wrist from the mouth of the still completely unresponsive vampire, as Monika took one of the two needles and pulled the plunger off before thrusting it deep into his thigh, filling the end of the needle closest to his flesh with blood.
Holding the wounded wrist tightly I scratched my head in confusion. "Umm… Monika, you need to fill the needle with the potion before injecting it."
"If we do that first, he'll die from dehydration after the first few liters; potions can accelerate healing to a stupid degree, but the body still has to pull the raw ingredients from somewhere. We need to give him enough water to regenerate that much blood."
Her words made more sense to me when she placed the metal funnel over the open needle and then began slowly and carefully ladling water from the barrel and into the funnel. I watched as the pressure of gravity pushed the blood back into his leg, followed by nearly a liter of water as Monika ladled more and more into the funnel.
Removing the needle and leaving me holding two bandaged wounds, Monika filled the second needle with healing potion and injected it into his other thigh.
"Ok, now we give it some time to take effect and then repeat the process, and hope that he somehow doesn't die before we are done."
30 seconds later, she removed the bandage from his now healed wrist and sliced the same cut as before, placing the newly made wound once again back over Kyu's mouth.
Result 1d100=84+20(medical kit+field medic)-30 (Very hard)=74 Success! Monika gains 3 progress towards field doctor 6/25
The last two hours had felt like an eternity, and Monika and I were both slouched over in the corner of the tent, covered in blood and sweat. Bran was alive, though Monika had said it was a close call; more than once she had needed to slam her hands down over his chest repeatedly, apparently to kick start his heart after it had stopped beating. The huge man's cheeks were sunken and the skin over his arms was shriveled and cold to the touch, but he was alive.
Kyu on the other hand, though still unconscious looked better than she had before, her skin which had been so brutally burnt and peeled, was now smoother and whiter then before. Her long hair had previously been bleached out in an imperfect white but now, fully regrown, seemed to shimmer like a diamond in the low light of the setting sun filtering in through the tent flap…
I sprinted to shut the tent in a panic, blocking out the rays of the sun which had been allowed to angle into the tent by the movement of the sun towards the horizon. I turned back to look at Kyu's sleeping face sure that the light had made purchase on her skin, but there she was, no sign of the horrific damage it had once done to her… that would need looking into, but for now I wasn't willing to risk harming her to satisfy my curiosity, especially so soon after having almost lost her.
We ended up needing to take two trips, first taking Kyu and the supplies back to the tavern, and then working together with Monika and using the cot as a stretcher hauling Bran back and plopping him unconscious on my bed. Monika had been angry at the waste, but ultimately we'd decided it would be best to pour out the remainder of the vodka onto his hair and clothing, to both remove the worst of the bloodstains, and leave him smelling of alcohol enough to give us a convincing alibi for dragging his unconscious form back with us.
That night I slept, in Kyu's bed as Kyu-bei sat vigil atop the chest from my room we'd refitted to make Kyu's new bed. It'd been a long long day, but everyone was alive and with that reassuring thought in my head I fell into a deep sleep.
Results and Planning:
Impromptu quest complete: Save Kyu!
Reward: easy 75xp +50xp for bonus objective (non-lethal)
Monika has 250xp and may level up to either psionic lvl 2 (150xp) or rogue lvl 3 (200xp)
Nathan has 150xp and may either take a second class (100xp) or wait for cleric lvl 4 (250xp)
Kyu has 0xp and gains vampire lvl 3!
Bran has 400xp, but is not a member of the party.
Monika spent 400 gold out of pocket to buy potions and chloroform, she's eating the entire cost as a favor to Nathan... who should probably make time to go with her on a date. Seriously she has a LOOOT of knives.
Old Kings Coal: IGNORED.
New Quest discovered!
Old King's coal part two: The coal crisis in the north is getting even more desperate. Deprived of the critical fuel by the terrorist attack on the Montfort mines and the assault of bandits on the charcoal shipments from the south, the forges of the north have gone dark and if there is no coal by the start of winter, the army will need to either buy from the dwarves or face the resumption of war with the Niflem in the Spring completely unprepared. The bounty has been raised from 2500 to 5000 gold to anyone who can eliminate the charcoal bandits as the army is currently engaged completely in the war with Niflem and cannot spare convoys to protect the charcoal merchants.
Difficulty: Impossible. Time limit: 07JUN01. Reward: 5000 gold and looting rights. Travel time: 7 days ride.
Injury and recovery:
You still have 7 days remaining in the week and Monika is now fully recovered! Bran has taken up residence with you for the time being but his body is badly beat up and he'll be at half hp for the next month, followed by another month, recovering 1 level of his 4 levels of fatigue each week until he's back in full fighting shape. Oddly enough Kyu will be back in business after a good day's rest, thanks to her strange vampire physiology so she'll be available for tasking this week. Nathan has 1 remaining level of fatigue and will be fully operational at the end of this turn.

Alright then, I'm surprised that update took me three days of struggle before being put out, but ultimately writers block was defeated by the forces of good... or something.
I'll be updating the character sheets as well as the quests and such here Now including Bran Joricson's full character sheet. Should be good to go now, let me know if you catch something weird... other then the map... sorry it's a work in progress.
I apologize that voting is as usual far more drawn out then I'd like, but I just can't find a way to compress it. Bless the people who actually bother to read through the mess and come to a vote, those who just want to read the story I totally understand.
One note, I did force Kyu into a level of vampire, because sometimes narrative matches up far too well with the boost from leveling, and I'll be damned If I'm going to find a better chance to explain her body evolving a certain level of resistance to the sun.
As always thanks for following
<3 Seawolf
Edit: upon re-reading this... bit of a grisly chapter. I apologize to any new readers wondering why we are doing surgery... the quest got a bit weird for a moment there.

Well, Bran was helpful but I'm not sure we want him in our party, so just have Kyu.
Other than that, Nathan does (questionably) restful things so we can start questing next turn.
