I had been spoiling kyu lately as she continued her training with the Catgirls, who seemed overjoyed to have someone to test their outfit designs on.
'Kyu' might be worth capitalizing.
it amazed me how quickly I'd become attached to the silver haired vampire; who I now saw as the cute little sister I'd never had.
First thought: Asmodeus preserve us, we are turning into one of the dreaded Onii-chans!
Second thought: Nate, I do not mean to pry, but might I ask you why your mental image of a younger-sister-you've-never-had involves her dressing in a maid outfit and calling you Master?
despite it's affinity for people, our new pet was rather independent, but I was confident the greedy vixen would return in time for supper.
It is true that Kyu is showing more capacity for autonomous actions lately, but what made you think it would take Monika that long to interview new party members?
Leaning heavily against me she whispered weakly into my ear, "I just feel so weak all of a sudden, so vulnerable and easy to take advantage of." She batted her eyes at me as she said this, I sighed, she was so weird sometimes.

I plopped her down on her bed, "want me to get you some water or something?"
Sick burn, Nate. There is hope for you yet.
I nodded my head, slightly confused. "Oh ok… wait, did you say you… re-enlisted?"

"Certainly! A fair number of us do you know. True immortality is hard to come by, and many prefer their life as devils rather than being tossed back into the pool of souls to be reincarnated without any memory of our past lives, but this conversation has gotten away from the point.
Let's see... health insurance, career advancement, a retirement plan. Give me full dental and I'll cross a certain motivation off my list.
Oh, oh, do you do cosmetic surgery? Asking for a friend!
"Nathaniel Graves? I am Leslie Mengsk and I have been assigned to tutor you in the ways of our mutual master."
Excuse me sir, do you have any relatives named Arcturus? I am a big fan!

Why send both Kyu and Monika to scout? Monika can't see in the dark, and the two are pretty awful at working together... though maybe this can fix it? Still, if we want to do the actual mission, it's a different option.

I believe we're having both scout so that we roll twice for scouting. I rather doubt they'll be going together.

Wait... is Illya actual satan now? What did I miss?

And yes mengsk name was taken from SC2, hard to come up with names sometimes ja know?

Interlude: What's in the box?
Interlude: What's in the box?

d100=1+26(FAITH) Natural 1 results in potentially lethal failure!

I had sat meditating under the shade of the old oak tree all day for the last three days, while Leslie, my strange Devil of a tutor attempted to teach me how to channel the shadows through my body and into the world, but even the remarkably patient Arcanoloth was becoming frustrated with my total lack of progress. "Once again. Feel your connection to our lord and let the power build inside your chest."

I forced the well of power inside me to take form as my tutor instructed, and felt the unformed ball of energy ooze into my chest, sliding like a thick grease down and across my ribs. "Very good. Now, since shadow has proven too hard for you, for now let's focus on a sub aspect of shadow; smoke. Smoke is the last gasp of those consumed by fire, it is a force that naturally follows in the wake of destruction covering and concealing the devastation. This choking smothering force is similar in nature to what most feel immediately following bouts of extreme pain, and is thus easily drawn forward by feelings of agony and anguish."

Following what the devil was trying to say I focused on the pain I'd felt as the spider's poison had burned away at my flesh, and felt the power react to my memory, searing a path through my body, from my chest and down into my left hand; forcing my fingers into a claw as the dark energy swirled and burned ready to be unleashed. Frustrated I pounded my fist into the side of the tree, causing my middle knuckle to split into a bloody mess against the hard bark, as I released the miracle of lesser wounds back into the pool of power in my chest. "It isn't working! Every single time I try to form something new it just takes the shape of something I already know!"

Mengsk breathed deeply as he pushed his glasses up to the tip of his snout. "It's all about the way you direct the emotion. You are forming the pain, but it's being directed outward, you need to form it inward. It should be a cloying pain that you feel compelled to cover and smother, like smoke over a fire."

I sat down and began rubbing dirt over my torn knuckles. I felt utterly worthless. My current knowledge of miracles had been placed into my head the moment I made the contract, and now that I had to actually learn how to form the power granted to me, I was proving to be a complete incompetent. I knew that for all my ambitions of starting a new life and making something of myself that I wasn't a smart man; and for the last month I'd been relying on Monika to cover for my flaws. But this power wasn't even my own, it was being lent to me from my deity, and it stung my pride deeply to think that even with power being given rather than earned, I was still unable to make use of it.

So I lashed out at my teacher, "You keep speaking in riddles, thinking that saying things like smoke over fire is going to mean anything to me, why don't you teach it to me in a way I can actually understand?"

To my surprise rather than become angry or chide me for my outburst, the fox shaped creature before me let out a sharp toothed smile instead, "I have put some thought into alternative teaching methods actually. If you would just follow me into the meadow over there for a moment." Following the devil I squinted as my eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight pouring into the field. "You see, after these last few days of you floundering, I began looking into your personal affairs in order to find a more appropriate motivation for you to unlock your full potential, and after a little deliberation I decided to prepare a gift for you that I think will help things along tremendously."

Having adjusted fully to the bright sunlight pouring into the meadow my eyes came to rest on a large rectangular chest about 50 yards away, sitting very much out of place in the middle of the field. For some reason I had the nagging feeling that I had seen this particular box before, but couldn't pin down exactly where.

"So, Leslie umm… what's in the box?"

The devil once more revealed a wicked looking toothy smile, seemingly overjoyed at the chance to reveal his gift. "Allow me to show you." With a wave of his skeletal hand the lid to the chest flew off, revealing a small white haired figure, curled up comfortably within; her face smiling adorably with the innocence of sleeping youth.

And then the screaming began.

Okay, so it's a true DDLC crossover. Even leveling up and praying for new spells might kill you in this game.
I think we need to adjust our plans.

-[ ] [Kyu] Play with ?Fox?

...what does a Nat1 on playing with the Fox do?

Have you ever played ADoM?

You can randomly get a wish if you drink from magic pools, which grant random effects. Normally it just ends with the character cursed, doomed, poisoned, on fire, under an effect that randomly teleports you around the place, and surrounded by poisonous vipers.

Never stopped anyone from compulsively slurping them down until they dry up.

You better run, Foxy.

Desperation
Desperation:

I sprinted across the meadow, screams of unfathomable pain flooding my ears as Kyu erupted in flames which spread and devoured her entire body. I pulled desperately at the strings of power inside me begging for shadows to come forth as my companion writhed in anguish before me. The well within me mocked my efforts failing to respond at all. I tore off my jacket to cover Kyu's still burning flesh, but the unnatural fires consuming her body burned through the material the moment it touched her, melting and fusing to the blackened skin eliciting new tones of unbridled pain as the sunlight continued to do its work.

I threw myself atop her trying to block the sun, as intense heat seared my lungs and eyes, and in that moment of pain; as my friend lie dying beneath me I realized what I had been missing. The power was there within me, I had called it forth before, cajoled it, begged it, pleaded with it until it squeaked out in small spurts. Now I reached inside myself and savagely tore at the power within; strangling it's resistance to my call with sheer force of rage and will. There would be no whimpering or pleading. I Commanded and the shadows obeyed, covering the area in a dome of impenetrable darkness.

I had a moment to take a measure of the burnt thing beneath me lying broken inside the shattered box; and felt my heart rip open at the sight of the charred body of my little sister. The cracked burnt flesh ran from head to toe as melted marrow and fat bubbled up between the blisters that were all that was left of her once smooth white skin. Her hair had been burnt away; smoking black and red welts completely covered her bald head, letting forth an unbelievably putrid smell. Her mouth and eyes were seared shut, her nose melted down to the bone below. I heaved to the side, vomiting uncontrollably as tears rolled down my eyes unbidden.

"Excellent! Good show good show!" the devil applauded from the tree line, "See? I knew you could do it, all you needed was the proper motivation."

"Damn you to hell for all time!" I raged out before emptying the remaining acid in my stomach onto the ground beside me.

"That is in fact my very intent" The fox replied, his shit eating grin begging me to crush his face in. "Not that I care in the least, but I'm feeling generous given your excellent progress, so I suppose I'll let you know that despite what it appears, your friend there isn't actually dead; well, no more than she was before at any rate. Though I suspect she won't last long without a significant amount of blood."

Without hesitation I pulled out my knife and slit my wrist allowing a stream of blood to fall over Kyu's burn scarred face and mouth.

"You'll need much more blood then you can provide, young Nathan. Best save your strength until you can find a suitable donor, or five." The Fox mirthfully called out. "Anyway, best of luck, I do ever so look forward to our future lessons." and just like that the Devil disappeared leaving me alone, bleeding into the mouth of my unresponsive companion, covered in a cloud of darkness that was entirely my own creation.

Nathan has learned the level 2 miracle Darkness! Darkness: as an action you create a 10 foot radius globe of darkness located at a point you can see within 120 feet. The globe of magical darkness cannot be penetrated by natural light, or magical light from spells and miracles lvl 2 or below. The globe lasts for 1 minute and wraps around solid objects. Creatures with night vision cannot see in the magical darkness.

Nathan has gained proficiency miracles! +2 to hit with all miracles.

There are some peasants, who live in farmhouses well away from town, but it would take hours to get there, and a return trip with a heavy load would take longer still. Winterbrook is a mere 10 minutes away, but is moderately populated and every entrance has a guard. You've spent some amount of time in the area and know an area that a group of fishermen frequent nearby, but the fishermen have a reputation as criminals and smugglers and will likely be armed. You are not wearing your chainmail, but have your mace and knife with you and are still able to use 2 lvl 1 miracles today. Due to your previous injuries you have 1 level of fatigue and will receive a -2 to all checks and rolls on a d20 and a -10 to all rolls on a d100.

Well then... that just happened.

Sorry for the tease, but I felt it appropriate to break this up into two parts (I may have just wanted to end an update with the line and then the screaming began.)

Is there a way to get advantage on these kinds of rolls, in order to minimize the likelihood of a nat 1? Or some way to mitigate the damage?

Nope shit just happens. However I won't ever just kill someone from a Nat 1 without giving you a fair chance to respond (Unless the action that resulted in the death was blatently risky). While bad things do just happen, I will attempt to be fair and give you agency over the ultimate outcome to the degree I can.

Sorry for over-ruling the previous vote, I mean no disrespect to the sovereignty of questers choice, but stuff came up and continuing the regular weeks events would be foolish.

I attempted to give some pertinent information but feel that a write in is the best format given the severity of the situation. Feel free to ask for any more information and I'll dole out anything that Nathan would readily know.

As always thanks for following

Alright, let's brainstorm.

First off, we need to put the lid back on the chest before the darkness dissipates. Or find some other way to keep Kyu in darkness.

If we want to reach the peasants, we could try to carry Kyu there. That way we wouldn't need a return trip. It would still take a while, but would have the least social repercussions due to how easy it would be to silence witnesses and the distance they are from town (and from where the vampire quest happened). On the other hand, if we take too many social repercussions, we can just skip town.

Not sure if we can take a guard. @Seawolf, does Nathan know how tough the guards are? Whether they would be strong enough to challenge most low level adventurers?
If we can take out a guard though, we can use them for food, and also we'd have access to our place, along with plenty of people to eat. I would recommend skipping town immediately afterwards. Other issues are the presence of people that could be dangerous. Also, this option gives us Monika, who could help a TON... or decide that this is the perfect time to kill off Kyu, or decide not to help at all.

The fishermen are probably the most moral choice. @Seawolf, how far away are they exactly? Closer than town? Also, does Nathan have any of how tough they might be in relation to himself or the guards? Do guards or fishermen travel in packs (like having 2 guards per gate)?

Edit:
Miracles
Cause Light Wounds: can kill one person pretty effectively. Use on a single guard?
False Life: I don't know whether this could be helpful, but it could help us avoid damage against a guard or some fishermen.
Blood Offering: I think it's probably pretty important to use this, so we have 3 miracles to work with.
Devil's Gift: might help a little with fishermen? Not seeing a lot of use for this one.
Sulfur And Ash: could help blind a bunch of fishermen before trying to kill them.

They vary between lvl 1-5 warriors. It'd be an even fight 1v1, but you'd most certainly surprise the hell out of them as they all know you by name at this point. Would you be able to take them out without them shouting out and alerting the entire town though?

Murder is murder my friend, going down any path that involves killing humans to save Kyu is crossing a moral line. Which is fine by me, but it does set our friendly neighborhood team of do gooders down a more grey path then the yellow brick road they've walked thus far.

The fishermen are brawlers and thugs, but don't have magic nor are they professional fighters. You are stronger then them 1 on 1, and they are weaker then the guards. The spot the frequent is about 20 minutes away, but their are no guarantees they'll be there.

Town is closer then, with a guarantee of people. No guarantees on if we can get in or out safely though.
It sounds like the fishermen would probably be in a group, although we might be able to pick one or two off if they feel the call of nature.

For the record, yes, that is a very terrifying sentence to end an update on. Just wanted to mention that before I forget.

Also, do martial classes have potentially lethal failures for training too? And does potentially lethal failure only happen on a 1, or is it something like 1-5?

Edit:
Murder is murder my friend, going down any path that involves killing humans to save Kyu is crossing a moral line.
Asmodeus is going to be sooooooo happy.
We'll get Faith for that, right? :V

Sorry for the double post, but I want this to ping.

Do we know where Monika is right now? Whether she's inside the town, or currently scouting?

Idea for getting into town: we might be able to disguise Kyu's box as something. Maybe some kind of loot?
@Seawolf, do the guards normally check out luggage that comes through the gate? I'm assuming it's not exactly airport security here.

Also, seriously, do we get Faith for murdering? Because that seems like something Asmodeus would approve of, at least if it benefits the murderer.

How long do we have to vote? I'm hoping that a discussion picks up so we can brainstorm.

Would we be able to rent a horse, and would that work for carrying Kyu and her box? If so, how long would getting to the peasants take if we use a horse to bring Kyu (in her box) along?
Come to think of it, how long does it take to get to town or the fishermen while carrying or dragging a heavy load (like Kyu/box-kun, or a dead body, for example)?

We may need to bargain with Monika for her to help Kyu, if we go into town. Seawolf, how likely does Nathan think it is that he can convince Monika to help Kyu, or that she'll help Kyu without needing to be persuaded?

Voting will last until I'm satisfied the discussion has run its course. If necessary I will dole out options.

Nope, the guards see you come and going armed all the time. They won't check bags, luggage, or anything not blatently suspicious.

You can rent a horse, might be able to find the stablemaster, might not. It's going to take a bit of time though, and you really don't have a lot of that. Monika should be in town at this hour, Monika will literally do anything if Nathan is serious enough about it, and she has far less moral qualms then Nate or Kyu.

Azmodeus is lawful evil, meaning he delights in acts of domination. Murder probably won't score that high, but it's obviously not something he minds too much. *No, being a serial killer will not make you significantly more powerful... it'll just make you a highly wanted crazy person*

Carrying a heavy load will slow you down, but Nates working on super adrenaline right now, so He'll be able to manage in the short term.
