Adding to that, comics have an easier time throwing in new characters because they can make people visually distinct. One guy wears red, another has the stupid hair, and so on. In writing if you want to make people distinct you have to spend a lot of words describing their appearance or accent or however you are making them stick out. And you have to keep spending readers willingness to read 'padding' for those characteristics to mean anything. With comics it just takes a split second for the reader to visually recognize the character and remember who they are.
