Isn't the space in the garden already going to be taken up by using the place as an actual garden? Like, the only time anything resembling a dojo was mentioned anywhere near that context it was with an or.
I would strongly assume that anything worth calling a garden is big enough to fit a training ring with room to spare, especially when there's two of them.

Given it is a shophouse in a corporate urban neighborhood, the backyard isn't that big. You do have a front space for a small garden already, but if you plan on doing it in bigger quantities, it'll either be the backyard garden or dojo.

At least if anybody tries to take your flowers growing out front, you can press charges thanks to your legitimate business license. Assuming Yuuki doesn't immediately go "hippity hoppity, those flowers are my property" with a gun.

Yeah, that's what I figured. It doesn't really matter if the garden is big enough to fit a dojo or not, if the place is already taken up by flowers, we can't also put a dojo there at the same time.

Maybe something like the gun workshop is going to get more benefit from being underground than a dojo, but if I have to pick between dojo and garden, or tool workshop and dojo or garden, I'd definetly going with the former, even if it technically has less synergy with the underground spot.

Also, in all honesty, the tool workshop doesn't sound like that good an option anyway? Like, our actions are somewhat time/effort agnostic. Having to visit ShinSec for each modification might be more cumbersome in lore, but doing it at home is presumably still going to cost us an action anyway, so it not actually that much of a benefit as it might seem at first. It's better than not having it in a vacuum, of course, but you're still measuring a slight bit of comfort against options that give benefits that're much harder to replicate.

It's actually the option that unlocks the weapon modification mechanic in specific. Going to Shinohara Security is usually for weapons/gigs, cuz you never will know if they have a specific part you want in stock (especially for a specific model). With a tool workshop, you can get at least put/hack it together from pieces yourself, even for antiques.

In comparison, a dojo would be the option to trying to help raise Mitsu's current melee skill cap. It also could make passing on melee skills easier.

Fair enough. I'm still not crazy about it, but that's definetly better.

Meanwhile, helping Mitsu raise her skill cap would presumably let her train us to a higher level as well, so there's that for practical benefits on top of the fluff. (Not that we're better suited for sword than gun, but then the build we have basically amounts to getting close to trigger the empathy dodge, so it's not like it's a bad fit either.)

Even if there isn't perfect synergy, I really want to give Mitsu her dojo. It's her home too, and it's important she feels that way.

Another tie, hm? Well, I think there's a good way to help resolve this- more application of Mitsu! Let's see what she has to say, huh? Thanks for voting, writing will begin soon.

You found yourself oddly at odds with yourself about what to do with the basement. You knew for sure that you'd like to have a private gun range to help keep your firearm skills in top shape. In fact, consistent practice could help further hone your skills, or maybe even pick up alternative weapons you wouldn't have normally considered. You could experiment and practice your marksmanship in the comfort of your home, something that any Lycoris would definitely appreciate and perhaps even find nostalgic.

But then came the other half of the space- you were stumped between two options. On one hand, it felt natural to have workbenches immediately near the range to fine-tune or test new modifications to your weapons. Even with your limited skill in the field, you were sure you could eventually cobble something together, be it a customized grip or new sight mounting.

Yet there was also the tantalizing option of wanting to turn the space into a dedicated dojo space for the Way. Padded mats, sword racks, an arena for truly honing one's skill with the blade. It was something you had been seriously toying with, because you had admittedly started to feel just a little guilty at how much control you had with putting together the shophouse so far. Mitsu was splitting the rent, yet she practically had so little influence on her own home's development. Perhaps it was time to change that?

That very question warred inside you and you agonized, torn between the decision. After a few days, you realized you were certainly just wasting time thinking of that and nothing else. You needed a break, and your eyes fell to the seed packet tucked in your pocket.

Well, now was a good time as any.

(Sow Seeds (Red Spider Lily): 15 +15 (Intelligence) +12 (Rank 6 Botany) = 42)

You still found yourself distracted by your mental argument despite trying to focus on sowing your very first flower garden. You went through the motions almost mechanically and only realized you were finished when the watering can trickled empty. You worriedly studied the dirt, but it looked like even without focusing on it, you knew exactly how moist the soil had to be for the flower seeds to take root. Though perhaps, you'd have to put more focus on caring for them during the month's growth time to make sure they blossomed vibrantly.

After a moment of examination, you groaned and couldn't take it anymore. You had to talk to Mitsu about your choice, she certainly deserved her opinion being weighed in. Luckily, it was about time for the agreed-upon sword lessons. You packed away the gardening equipment and entered the shophouse, checking the time through your opticware.

(The Way: 64 +10 (Reflex) +15 (Mitsu) = 79)

Your partner showed up just in time as you finished pushing the furniture to the side to create a small sparring space. There was a focused look to Mitsu's eyes, one that promised absolutely concentration. "Very well!" She declared and tossed you a wooden sword. "This time, have at you!"

You blinked, then barely had moments to immediately raised your guard before her form blurred and she launched a vicious assault. A somewhat embarrassing yelp escaped your lips as you frantically tried to parry all the incoming attacks, surprisingly to much success. That was when you realized Mitsu was slightly telegraphing her strikes for the benefit of your opticware to activate and predict the angle of the next sword strike.

It was just like how your eyes could project bullet trajectories if you focused hard enough. With the aid of your cyberware, you slowly began to build confidence in parrying each strike, trying to maintain or improve your grip with every near fail. You weren't attacking yet, but at the same time, you were learning the weight of your tool and how you could shift it to meet your needs. At the same time, you focused on steady footwork, making sure to hold your ground in the face of Mitsu's attacks.

The Way (Rank 1 Melee) 1/1 – COMPLETED
The Way (Rank 2 Melee() 1/2 – In Progress

Closer to the end of the session, Mitsu's pace began to pick up and your opticware started to lag behind. You were barely meeting her blades by the skin of her teeth, exhaustion now kicking in with how you had been ground down in attrition through only defending. Then your partner activated her own cyberware.

The wooden bokken was slapped out of your hands with a final resounding crack and by the time you realized, the tip of her practice blade was at your throat. While it was only still wood, the point was still sharp enough to make you wince. You held up your hands with a shake of the head. "I give, I give."

She nodded, then withdrew the weapon with practiced flourish. Then Mitsu studied how you picked up your own sword and hefted it about. She gave a satisfied nod with a matching remark. "You finally grasp the blade with the necessary confidence. Good."

"I never really thought about it, but mentality really is half the battle, isn't it?" You pointed out. "You need to be confident in your strikes, otherwise you'll freeze up when the moment comes. It's all about controlling not just the fight, but your state of being."

"The first breakthrough of many." A small smile peeked through her lips and your eyes narrowed at how rather...restrained Mitsu was acting. It was like she was trying absolutely to not think of anything else but the sword at the moment. "An excellent mark of progress, no?" She turned to leave, her obligation complete.

But you called out. "Hang on. Mitsu, we need to talk." She stopped mid-step and before she got away, you struck. "First of all, I'm sorry. I went too far in teasing you earlier with the costumes."

"I already insisted it was no significant matter-"

"It was, because you clearly were uncomfortable around my new shop costumes," You pushed and watched her hand ball up. "But I kept pushing regardless, and that wasn't right. I shouldn't have done that. I apologize," You told sincerely and bowed your head deeply, hoping that it'd help clear the air.

There was a long moment of silence, then Mitsu let out a tense sigh that she herself seemed surprised at herself. "Yes, well...I was being foolish too. It is merely an attire, hardly something to take offense at!" She rambled, more to herself than anything. "A matter that is so minor in all things, that it is...irrational that I am so frustrated. So...upset. So…jealous."

The last word came out almost like a whisper and your head snapped up with your mouth falling slightly agape. In a near-mirror, Mitsu's hand shot up to cover her lips, like she herself was shocked she had just made such an admission. The two of you stared at one another for a long while, taken clearly back by what Mitsu may have just realized about herself. You watched her face glow like a boiling kettle and slowly tested the waters. "Mitsu, did you want to try out one of the costumes?" You gingerly asked, prepared to take back your words if need be.

It was unnecessary when her hand slowly lowered and she began to hesitantly talk, trying to reason out her inner conflict. "I...the attires are hardly becoming of a samurai. No, no, I shouldn't. But I want to."

"I mean, a butler suit should be close enough to a regular suit to pass for a stylish ronin-"

"I WANT TO WEAR A MAID OUTFIT!" She finally blurted out, burying her embarrassed expression into her hands. "Oh kami, strike me down, I truly want to! I want to don one of the dresses and twirl around, to feel so...pretty, even while I wield a blade of death! Oh, how unbecoming of a street samurai am I? They are meant to be grizzled and sleek runners, and yet here I am, wanting to just flourish!"

You stared at Mitsu agonizing at discovering a part of her that she probably hadn't even realized herself. She probably never gave it much thought, thinking wholly about aspiring to become a stylish warrior of street justice first, then worrying about everything else later, including fashion. It was rather true that when one thought of street samurai, they were depicted as being almost bikers of a sort. Mitsu's purchase of a motorcycle did nothing to disprove that stereotype.

However, you knew the difference was that she clearly enjoyed riding around on a bike. She loved swordplay and her odd antiquated way of speaking. And if she then liked the idea of dressing up as a maid, then why should she hold back from enjoying it as well? That was the angle to strike at. "You realize that you can be both at the same time, right?" You stated.

"Huh?" She slowly lifted her head, the embarrassment replaced by confusion. "Er, whatever do you mean?"

"Why not become a samurai maid?" You suggested with a tilt of the head. "Come to think of it, wouldn't that be a unique enough title or feature to mark you out from all the others? Think about delivering justice via pulling out a katana from under your dress! Wouldn't that be...I believe the word is preem?"

Mitsu stared at you, then pointedly glanced the way of the storage unit, where your various employee uniforms were currently being stored. There was an unspoken question now, one that you answered wordlessly by walking over and opening the door. You grabbed one of the maid dresses and held it out with an encouraging nod, for your partner to shakily take.

She gulped, then looked at you. "I...could you help put it on?" Your fellow Lycoris shyly asked, warmth and eagerness returning to her voice along with a tinge of bubbly nervousness. "And um...could I see what you prefer?"

"Of course." While you rummaged around for your outfit, you spoke up about the thing that too had been nagging you for a while. "Say, I've been wanting to turn the basement we have into something useful, but I'm torn on what to add. I already put in a gun range for us to keep our skills up, but I'm undecided between two other options: a tool workshop for our weapons, or a dojo for you. What are your thoughts?"

"A dojo?!" She sputtered, hands squeezing the dress in her grasp tighter. "I mean...that would be fantastic for me to have a dedicated training space! It would also mean I could instruct others in the Way, but I doubt I am worthy to pass on said skills just yet. I do not wish to taint students with my rather mediocrity for now."

"So you'd prefer the tool workshop?"

"Either," She immediately clarified with a nod. "I do not mind either option. I would like the dojo, but do not force yourself! It may very well be a time before I take on students of my style, I insist on honing myself first then!"

You hummed thoughtfully and finally found the uniform you were reaching for. You made your decision about the blank space as well while reaching for…

- What's this? Mitsu is evolving! Congratulations! Mitsu has evolved from Lycoris Ronin to Samurai Maid! Honestly, the concept was just too cyberpunk-fitting to turn down.
- It's just a vote by line this time, no need for plans.

Four hour moratorium to break the tie.

[ ] [Basement] Training Dojo.

Still my top choice for the same reason I gave before: Mitsu deserves a space, too. Also, frankly, I feel like there'll be enough things to do between running a cafe/flower shop, growing flowers, becoming a fixer, training, keeping in touch with other Lycoris, and actually getting out and interacting with the world before adding weapon modifications to the mix.

[ ] [Uniform] A butler suit.

[ ] [Uniform] A maid dress.

Decisions, decisions...

I... Mitsu you wonderful silly girl.

Man I'm really glad she ended up coming along this is great, holy shit.

Anyways I'm thinking:
[ ] [Uniform] A butler suit.
To complement her.

[ ] [Uniform] A butler suit.

[ ] [Basement] Training Dojo.

I'm still feeling the cool factor of the buttler suit and having our looks contrast with Mitsu as the starter package. Talking about Mitsu, she truly is the most precious one. I still want to give her the dojo. It's nice of her that she's willing to take a step back, but the dojo is what's going to help her train until she actually feels good enough to train others. That and she just deserves it and deserves it moreso each time she's on screen. May she bloom ever more brilliantly as an awesome and pretty samurai maid. And for that the shophouse should be the most suitable garden for her to take roots. Because by god, if her wanderlust ever wins out and takes her from us for a significant chunk of time, it'll be a dark day.

She specifically said that she wants to wear a Maid Dress, plus it is an aesthetic less likely to be confused with a normal suit.
