Omake: On Duty

He stares at you. Why? Oh... Yes, of course. You didn't burn.

'Another had, So long ago.'

Memories drifting in and about you, a cardinal of the church-

- 'I never wanted' -

- But it is here now. It unites an Empire that crumbles by the day and reforges is self by the hour. There is a greatness to this you think. Made all the grander in the scope of the tragedy revealed in the bare edges of perspective you've gained in the here and now.

The is something like real hope in the shadows cast by innumerable falls from grace. Of the mirrored determination, the sheer bloody minded refusal to remain in a squalor of ignorance.

There is something a lot like Faith.

Even in all of this vitriol you believe.
Even in the coming agony your flock believes.
Even behind the cruel certainty of the Inquisitor's heart.

He Believes. He has Faith.

And faith. Faith you know.

"No more Tragedy Inquisitor. No more pain. Not here. You think I teeter these men and woman on the edge of Heresy and Insurrection but I say now to you and all who listen that I mean simply to guide them closer to the truth of Him on Earth. You believe these harsh actions are the only options left. That on some level the harsh measures are kinder than the pain of a failed harvest.

I understand. I do. The Imperium is a mighty edifice. But her wall are said to crumble from within and without and how soon might they crumble when the grain stores run dry. I see you supporting this politicking and this corruption not because you feel you will be rewarded but because a few thousand now might save billions tomorrow.

But look to the mob at the steps Inquisitor look how similar they are to those who would be condemned. Look at my self in these last days. consider the conditions that saw me potentially exiled while my flock were to be set to the pyre. Look at the men who made that decision. From whence does that mercy stem I must wonder. What do they hide behind hollow platitudes that they might wish to set a precedent. Why is a wish for a full belly and schooling for their children such an anathema consideration.

We Believe, you and I, inquisitor.

Of this I am certain.

You and I and every man woman and child in this plaza. From the multitudes before us my flock on the pyres the Sister behind men and your acolytes around us.

More over this is no farce, Inquisitor, I see that. This is what you believe must be done. This is Duty insofar as you must act.

And so to is my defiance a duty that must be done.

Who are we that might burn men for daring to strive for greater tomorrow?

Who are we that might silence the voice of a loyal few who dare to act in accordance to faith?

Who are we inquisitor that might quietly allow the deaths of believers at the behest of Philanderers?

I tell you now inquisitor we would not be doing our duty. We would not be men of principle. Nor Would we be the men who uphold the Throne of Terra.

We would be Tyrants Inquisitor.

No better than Horus"

[X] Exile. You find this man unworthy, and banish him from your sight. Let him go forth and spread the word of what happened here today, the first of many heralds that you must send forth to better enact your will upon this world.

The shift to casual speech when the Emperor appeared was a bit too much. The tone still feels reverent, and the Cardinal is in the midst of a divine revelation. I think it'd be better to stay formal.

Still, this is gonna be an amazing quest.

The Cardinal is a man of principle and purpose. I think his first act as a solar should be likewise. No practicality, no compromise.

[X] Death. A million hands stand ready to enact your will, and the world you would create has no room in it for such treacherous monsters. Let him reap what he has sown, and die as he would have condemned others to die in his place.

"Go thou and sin no more"

I don't really want this guy with us. He's not the sort of Inquisitor that we want around us. (The Inquisitor of Maugan Ra's second Exalted/40K cross, on the other hand...) That rules out Mercy.

And yet. There has already been enough death today. What purpose would killing him serve? What would we, no, what would the Emperor, the Imperium, gain from this man's death?

Cause it has higher chance of winning than death.

My two cents here but I'm reaally not interested in recruiting this inquisitor as a first follower : we just saved an entire mob already converted to our cause and I'm certain there's someone more deserving among them. "Deserving" like "wasn't trying to kill a bunch of people interested in hearing how their lives could be better" - and there's just more flair in elevating someone from the masses. From what I'm get that's supposed to be our character's credo : the people of the Imperium deserves better than what they're getting, so why get cozy with the would-be-and-certainly-already-is mass murderer when we could give one of them a chance to really help their fellow citizens ?

Aaand, idk... I feel it's the most interesting option from a narrative point of view. If we send him into exile, there's a chance he could come back later as someone important to our story : the first herald who was disgraced but then came back enlightened and ready to earn his redemption. Or maybe he will return resentful and full of hatred, for he was humiliated by the one he was supposed to put in his place. Or maybe he won't really change, and will reappear as a fanatic - but a fanatic to our cause, an extremist that need to be dealt with even while he's singing our praises.

I'm just thinking the first act of a reformer shouldn't be to say " These mass-murderers from the old regime ? I want them with me, please ".

There is a place in the world. It's a place for good men, a place where men and women can earn redemption, a place where people can seek betterment and where every man is owned his mercy. That place is dead. It existed in the dreams of the Emperor, it existed in the dreams of billions of dead over ten thousand years ago, it exists now in vague echose that maggot-men shout hoarsely to dying stars as they proclaim their words of murder to be mercy. Men like this man did that, people like this Inquisitor in front of us created that place, they birthed it. It's birth pangs were the world-fires of the Exterminatus, the boom-boom of bolter fire, the thunder of guns and the dark shape of Black Ships turning day into night.

I say let them sleep in the bed they lay.

Send him far from the halls of power, send him to the frontiers and vacuums, the places where not even the Heavenly Father he pretends to serve can reach him with his life, send him to speak of this day, send him there to tell them all, "I am of the Imperial Inquisition, and this was the day someone spoke up. This was the day when I took one step too far." Let him say this, let him speak with fire and fury, with the zeal of a convert, let him walk as an exile among the cursed, the lost and the damned that he has consigned to the gutter and death a thousand times over.

And let him say, let him speak, let him scream:

"The dark times are over, we can all be more, He is returned."

Eh, anything but exile. I'd prefer a first messenger who isn't quite so inclined to utterly vilify us.
