Omake: On Duty
He stares at you. Why? Oh... Yes, of course. You didn't burn.
'Another had, So long ago.'
Memories drifting in and about you, a cardinal of the church-
- 'I never wanted' -
- But it is here now. It unites an Empire that crumbles by the day and reforges is self by the hour. There is a greatness to this you think. Made all the grander in the scope of the tragedy revealed in the bare edges of perspective you've gained in the here and now.
The is something like real hope in the shadows cast by innumerable falls from grace. Of the mirrored determination, the sheer bloody minded refusal to remain in a squalor of ignorance.
There is something a lot like Faith.
Even in all of this vitriol you believe.
Even in the coming agony your flock believes.
Even behind the cruel certainty of the Inquisitor's heart.
He Believes. He has Faith.
And faith. Faith you
know.
"No more Tragedy Inquisitor. No more pain. Not here. You think I teeter these men and woman on the edge of Heresy and Insurrection but I say now to you and all who listen that I mean simply to guide them closer to the truth of Him on Earth. You believe these harsh actions are the only options left. That on some level the harsh measures are kinder than the pain of a failed harvest.
I understand. I do. The Imperium is a mighty edifice. But her wall are said to crumble from within and without and how soon might they crumble when the grain stores run dry. I see you supporting this politicking and this corruption not because you feel you will be rewarded but because a few thousand now might save billions tomorrow.
But look to the mob at the steps Inquisitor look how similar they are to those who would be condemned. Look at my self in these last days. consider the conditions that saw me potentially exiled while my flock were to be set to the pyre. Look at the men who made that decision. From whence does that mercy stem I must wonder. What do they hide behind hollow platitudes that they might wish to set a precedent. Why is a wish for a full belly and schooling for their children such an anathema consideration.
We Believe, you and I, inquisitor.
Of this I am certain.
You and I and every man woman and child in this plaza. From the multitudes before us my flock on the pyres the Sister behind men and your acolytes around us.
More over this is no farce, Inquisitor, I see that. This is what you believe must be done. This is Duty insofar as you must act.
And so to is my defiance a duty that must be done.
Who are we that might burn men for daring to strive for greater tomorrow?
Who are we that might silence the voice of a loyal few who dare to act in accordance to faith?
Who are we inquisitor that might quietly allow the deaths of believers at the behest of Philanderers?
I tell you now inquisitor we would not be doing our duty. We would not be men of principle. Nor Would we be the men who uphold the Throne of Terra.
We would be Tyrants Inquisitor.
No better than Horus"
