[DEAD] (IC)The Outer Dimension Offensive

The group continues heading for the demon encampment. Thanks to the two members that can see War Forger's marker, the squad makes good time on the trek even through the woods that soon spring up around them. About five hours into the walk, demonic noises and grunts can be heard in the distance, along with traces of the distinctive stench that accompanies Husks and Hellhounds.

Solus continued to muse on the subject and discuss it during their march; if nothing else, he has to commend the human soldiers for keeping up the entire way. Discipline makes a good soldier after all.

Once the sounds of enemies become audible in the distance, he motions everyone to a halt. "We take a five-minute break to recuperate. Legionnaire Graum, Corporal Senkei, prepare those... copters to get a basic idea of the situation ahead while we break, but spread them out. Specialist Illaoi, you will scout ahead once they get us an idea what we're facing."

He forgot what the machines themselves were exactly called, but at least ranks and names remained in mind. The area is suitable enough to hunker down and avoid detection while the scouts work. Before they can finally decide on how to approach the fight, they first need to know where the enemies are.

Gladys set down her backpack, opening it up and taking out the Quadcopter. With a quick glance through the manual one more time, she starts up the Quadcopter and begins carefully maneuvering it upwards and in the general direction of the sounds, adjusting her position to keep line of sight between her controller and her Quadcopter. If they were close enough to hear and smell the enemy, then they were also probably in range of the Husks if not for the trees and undergrowth.

Militia have formed up around Gladys:
Mob: Gladys gains base stats of Militia units, Militia units formed up around her sacrifice themselves to body block attacks on Gladys.
Base Damage: 300 -> 350
Base Resilience: 100 -> 150
Esprit De Corps: Gladys and Militia units can form a Phalanx.
Phalanx Base Damage: 350 -> 375
Phalanx Base Resilience: 150 -> 160

"If we're prepping for a fight, I should note that I grabbed an item from the armory that supposedly gives a brief increase to the amount of mana you can put into your attacks. It's supposed to recharge each day, so we probably wouldn't be wasting anything to use it here. I'll leave it up to the ones planning our strategy to decide who would make the best use of it."

Miriam didn't waste a single second settling down in a squat she could spring out of at a moment's notice. When you never knew when or where an incursion would be popping up, you took what rest you could where you could get it.

Plus, five minutes was more than enough to enjoy herself one of the ration bars her gran had made her.

Rinnia does similarly, sending another quadcopter into the air to scout as the Decanus indicated.

The two drones rise into the air and begin advancing toward the sounds ahead. After a few moments of flying, the drones reach a clearing in the trees and finally get a view of the demons. Unfortunately though the enemy isn't clustered into one neat and tidy group. The first, and closest, group of enemies number nine in all, consisting of a demonic Footsoldier, five Infernals, and three Husks. The second group is on the other side of the clearing from the first and numbers 8, half Infernals and half Husks. A third group is wandering between the two, consisting of six normal Hellhounds and one Alpha. Unfortunately, if there is a fourth group here with the remaining six demons, it's not visible.

"Three groups ahead in a clearing. Closest is a Footsoldier, five Infernals, and three Husks. Second group is opposite them in the lcearing, four Infernals and four Husks. In between the two is one Hellhound Alpha and six other Hellhounds with it. That leaves six demons unaccounted for from Rift Diver's intel."
She considers the size of the clearing. "Probably a bit too large of an area for a single explosive to hit all of them effectively. Infernals are the main threat of potentially escaping with info, if the idea occurs to them at all."

Minutes pass while Solus rests, though his mind is still at work trying to make the most of this. He shakes his head at Legionaire Galio's offer of stimulants; those are best saved for crises.

Once information comes in, Solus nods slowly. Then he orders the drones withdrawn before addressing the squad: "Our objective is to destroy the present UD forces entirely. No survivors can be allowed, lest they carry word of our presence to the main force. Corporal Senkei, I want your initial strike on the group of Husks and Infernals in the back. Legionaires Graum and Galio, Specialist Strand, you and War Forger's troops are with me in front. Everyone else except Specialist Ilaoi and Corporal Senkei forms our back line. I want you two hidden in the thicket, dealing with any runners and keeping watch for the missing Demons. We hit the nearest group at the same time the Corporal strikes at the furthest one."

The lack of complete intel can be problematic, but they need to work with what they have. Any minute spent standing around is a minute they can be discovered. With his orders delivered, Solus straightens up and waits for their acknowledgement.

A Walk Through the Woods

Captain Masson leaned in from her concealed position. Through the elf's quadcopter, she saw everything: The Infernals were animals, beasts beset with no direction or purpose. Their activities matched their appearances; they moved like marooned hunters on a walk through the woods rather than soldiers holding ground, and she bet that their communications - or lack there of - would prove that analogy correct. Staring the show, she nodded at Solus' preface, and spoke low into her radio:

"Counter Forces, our opening remains unchanged. We'll squall after Senkei's initial barrage. Senkei, on my mark."

"Aye aye, sir." Miriam rumbled as she sprang to her feet and lumbered off to her position. Not exactly her favorite role, sitting on the back, but orders were orders.

Good thing she knew how to modulate her signature spell so the glowing eyes wouldn't pop up. Let her get it ready to go without compromising their position. Hopefully it would be completely unnecessary, but with a group this big chances were someone would need to get topped off.

"Roger." Not her preferred plan, but a functional one, so there's no point in dissent at this stage. She maneuvers the MADPAWS into position primarily via teleportation, ever thankful for the enchantments on it silencing any noise made. She switches it to Ordnance mode, and takes aim. "Target acquired. Will fire on your mark," Rinnia whispers back through the radio.

Eliza stretched out her shoulders, letting the anticipation of imminent battle flow through her in a shivering wave. One last check or both her gun, and the more important sidearm tucked to the outside of her jacket. One moment would set the pace of how this entire operation would go. If everything did go to shit, it wouldn't be by her hands.

"Got it."

Strand takes a 40mm grenade from her pouch and slots it into the underslung launcher. "My brute squad and I would be better attached to Decade Warwick, if you concur Ma'am."

The jittery sensation of upcoming battle was making her feel restless. Adding to the urge to get in a solid hit with her grenade loadout at closer range.

Gladys moves to one side of Solus and into formation, withdrawing the Quadcopter and storing it away in her pack before gesturing to the squad of Militia formed up with her already.
"Understood. Militia, form two rows of three behind myself and Decanus Warwick."
Taking her sword and shield in hand, Gladys focused on the direction of the clearing. This enemy group was nothing they should be unable to deal with, but vigilance now could prove the difference between an impactful strike and a chaotic melee from the onset.
Mob: Gladys gains base stats of Militia units, Militia units formed up around her sacrifice themselves to body block attacks on Gladys.
Base Damage: 300 -> 350
Base Resilience: 100 -> 150
The Steel Tide: Gladys and other Elves meld while in formation.
Esprit De Corps: Non-Elves can join the Phalanx, offering half of their stats as relevant.
Phalanx Base Damage: 350 + 250 + 300 + (250 + 10*5) / 2 = 1050
Phalanx Base Resilience: 150 + 185 + 210 = 545

Esprit De Corps (from Gladys): The Phalanx is immune to fear.
A Blade Forged From Scraps (from Solus): The Phalanx cannot be broken.

With the skill of a practiced soldier, Clara joins the front row of the phalanx, keeping her eyes peeled for the unlocated foes, ready to defend her allies from any incoming attacks.

"Acknowledged," Antolia responds, before slipping into the woods and vanishing from sight like a rock dropped in deep water.

With everyone ready, Solus takes a deep breath. Fire answers, but he refrains for now. The heat may be too intense for his allies nearby. Instead he raises Ember.

"Company, march!"

It is not a proper elven battlegroup, but even just a handful of them are more than enough to send light tremors through the ground in lockstep. All as one marching to war, nobody left behind or charging ahead.

Execute

]- [Ω] -[

The Captain moved her mouth to speak, but a voice came in through her radio. It was Strand. "My brute squad and I would be better attached to Decanus Warwick, if you concur, ma'am." (@kelllogo)

Strand's request erupted a battle in the Captain's head. Her instincts lept at her like a lion, highlighting the lack of mobility a phalanx offered. It bade her to decline, warning of the Infernals and their ability to breathe fire. The quieter part of her brain whispered that Forger's droids suffered without direction - and that they needed the numbers. A grumble. These are the kinds of variables you think about during a planning stage, not seconds before execution.

Seconds passed as silence broke through comms. Then, the battle ended. She made her decision.

"Affirmative, Strand. Keep those tin-cans in order." Hah. "Senkei, fire for effect on the Husks in Group 2. Everyone else, hold fire until Senkei's rounds impact or until Warwick's unit is engaged. Let's do this." (@Ryumancer)

The Captain uses Command and Control to give her allies the squad benefit: Interception Fire. Interception Fire: Gain a free reaction attack worth 50% of your base damage against enemies that move during a turn.

Unfortunately for the squad, shouting orders isn't very conducive to stealth. Masson and Rinnia see the demons go on alert and begin moving in the squad's direction. Based on the lack of blood lusted rage it's likely the demons don't know exactly what's coming, but they do know they're not alone anymore.

Surprise partially lost, surprise modifiers will still be applied but enemies will attack on the first turn of combat.

"Roger, firing." A silent shot from the MADPAWS is fired at the group of Infernals and Husks in the back, as specified by the Decanus. If any of that group survives, Rinnia will follow up her shot with a second, otherwise, she will fire at the next cluster of Husks, as the threat most worried about by her allies.

Gladys advances with The Phalanx, and as the clearing comes into physical view, the results of Rinnia's MADPAWS silent work come into view.

ApT Check:
2*6 (Hellhounds), 4 (Hellhound Alpha) = 16 Enemy ApT
1 (Gladys), 2 (Solus), 2 (Strand), 1 (Clara), 2 (Masson), 2 (Miriam), 2 (Eliza), 2 (Rinnia), 2 (Akira), 2 (Illaoi), 10 (5 Militia Units with 2 each) = 28 Allied ApT
Redoubled Effort: 0 Additional Actions

Her eyes lock onto the Hellhounds as they close, their group easily outnumbering the canine Demons. The first Hellhound that moves within her reach is met with a slash to the head. Even if their foes are scattered now, canines act in packs; no need to let them gather their wits and meet The Phalanx with any semblance of coordination.

The march is not long, but it still thrums up the fire in Solus' heart. Each time is a new experience, but it always remains the same in a different way. His blades at the ready, he falls into unconcious rhythm with the rest and readies to strike whichever enemies get in his way; his faith in the line to hold is absolute, he will do his part just the same.
