Naganami: "Look, it was totally an accident. I don't know how it happened, but I didn't want to kill my predecessor. I didn't even want to become a god, to start with! But why am I telling you this? You wouldn't understand..."

Sunon: "...You would be surprised."

Anyone else? I'm going to close the vote in a few hours. This is actually a pretty important one, since the choice of "newbie" essentially determines a big questline as well as a potential friend/rival. As more experienced gods, they have their business well in hand and aren't going to need Sunon in the same way.

Well, it was close, but Laevateinn wins. Y'all seem quite confident about your ability to handle her - this should be interesting.

The Lunatic Next Door
[X] Laevateinn, Goddess of the Hunt, is that she's not…entirely…sane? She gets this gleam in her eye when talking about all of the things she's killed, but anything else bores her so quickly."

Mehr gives a disapproving sound; it is not a fan of trophy hunters.

"All right, well, I'm sure we can…work something out." You sigh, not feeling up to making complex plans right now. "I don't have to work with her, do I?"

"No, not at all," Shahnaz assures you. "You can pay her a visit later and see what you think. But for now, why don't we get you settled in your new place? I'm dying to see how you decorate it." She pulls you along; the Flower Plaza fades behind you, into a curious grey mist. It's not cold, as you expected – it's strangely warm, as if some energy is warming the earth and causing it to steam up. Yes, energy…you think that this place is filled with energy, currently unused.

You stop. "So. Can I do anything here?"

Shahnaz giggles. "I think there are a few things that would get the others angry at you. Don't dig a hole to Oblivion, or mess with another god's territory…but other than that I can't think of anything."

"Oblivion is a realm of chaos, inhabited by demons. Why would I go there, and how would I get there from here?" you say, laughing.

"You're laughing," Shahnaz is laughing too, "but I heard from Uche that a god did go there once. It was a disaster and El banned it afterwards, so Uche was complaining because now he wants to study primordial chaos."

You are distracted from the topic by a shadow, a red-lined silhouette, approaching – at a run – through the mist. "Shahnaz, is anyone else supposed to be here?"

"Huh? Oh…" Her eyes go wide, and you both flinch as a woman skids to a stop a mere pace from crashing into you. "Laevateinn! We were just talking about you – I said to Sunon here that he should pay you a visit when he had the time. What brings you here?"

"I was curious. And bored." The Goddess of the Hunt studies you, as you (and Mehr, poking its head back out) study her in turn. She is a tall, well-built woman. Straw-colored hair frames an uncommonly pale face, with uncommonly red eyes. The rest of her is covered by white armor, finely-fitted and inscribed with channels of light that glow the same red as her eyes. You've never seen anything like it. It also occurs to you to wonder why she's wearing that here – is there some danger about?

As for you, well…you see the way her eyes narrow in dissatisfaction. "You're the new god here? You don't look like much. Can you fight?"

"Um…probably not as well as you, I'd say!" You're trying to make a joke. She doesn't laugh. She looks sincerely disappointed. "I'm just the god of light."

She mumbles, "Light…I'm used to making my own light. I'm used to darkness too. Light is pointless if there's nothing to see. A lot of beasts leave tracks that can't be seen with the eye. You have to listen to the currents of the void."

Shahnaz laughs nervously. Mehr expresses its disappointment. She really is insane, isn't she?

But that draws her attention – totally focused, her eyes seem like they could burn anything less flammable than your phoenix. "What is it?"

"This is Mehr. It is a phoenix. Currently in a very young state, I'm afraid. Please don't touch."

She leans uncomfortably close, though she keeps her hands on her hips. Mehr faces her bravely. "I've heard of phoenixes. Is it true that they don't ever die?"

"Well, they do die," you explain, "but then they are always reborn as an egg."

"Is there a way to kill one permanently? What if it died in a very thorough way? If I cut it apart in enough pieces—"

"That is ENOUGH," you cry, jumping backward protectively. Shahnaz steps forward to usher Laevateinn away with platitudes about how you're tired and this really isn't the right time and you're not even listening. How dare she? Is she only Goddess of the Hunt because Murder was already taken?

A voice catches your attention – it's Laevateinn, at the edge of being swallowed by mist. "I've angered you, haven't I?"

"Did you really just figure that out?" you ask icily.

"She's not good with people," Shahnaz frets. "But I bet you'd like to apologize now, right?" she says, turning to the other goddess.

Laevateinn says, "Let's have a duel. If you want. I think it'll make you feel better."

You facepalm. "Mehr," you say under your breath, "what should I do?"

Mehr just doesn't want to be killed. It doesn't want you to be killed either, it adds.

[ ] "FINE! Now get out!" If Laevateinn only respects strength, then you have to show her some, or she'll keep walking all over you! You probably can't beat her, but you know some things about self-defense.

[ ] "NO! Now get out!" You don't need to prove yourself to this lunatic! Furthermore, you have never liked fighting, and it certainly will not make you 'feel better' to get your ass kicked.

Once Shahnaz has taken her away, you slump down to the ground and moan. It's a general rule that in any large group of people, a small proportion of them will be malicious idiots. Are even the gods subject to this? Is Laevateinn the only one? How many gods are there total? You can name a dozen or so, worshipped in the lands through which you've travelled. You are sure there are more.

…It's getting hot. Finally, you remember that you're still wearing kit to traverse a Drachleonan forest in winter, though you've left that forest far behind. Grumpily, you take off your cloak, your coat, your phoenix chick, your second coat, and one of your shirts. Mehr pecks at the foggy ground, testing its texture. Werrk?

"Might as well. We don't have Shahnaz here to explain how, though…" There is now a pine tree right before you, dripping snow onto Mehr, who is trilling happily. "How did you do that?"

Rii! It's all about visualization, apparently. As the pine tree disappears like a drawing wiped from a slate, replaced by a thorny myrrh tree, you close your eyes and try to figure this out. As you noted before, there is a lot of energy here, and it feels…friendly? You could – well. There's one thing you have to try first.

The little ball of light rises from your hand into the air, pushing back the muggy mist. It illuminates more flat, featureless ground in every direction. El gave you a pretty big area to work with, didn't she? Do you need to worry about running into your neighbors, or are there shenanigans going on that make this place as big as it needs to be? You're used to magic being more arduous, artificial, painstaking. It's not as easy as waving a hand, and it's certainly not this big.

Mehr is currently making a tree whose branches ascend like a spiral staircase that its tiny flightless self can jump up.

You know what? Fuck it. You're a god now. You might as well think big. You might as well give yourself what you want.

[ ] A stone hut, perched on an arid mountainside surrounded by frankincense and myrrh. This is a replication of the place you lived for many happy years in the Frankincense Forest, where you met Mehr.

[ ] A log hall, like the place you were wintering in Drachleona, in a snowy forest of conifers. Not too cold of course.

[ ] A palatial treehouse, grown out of a mighty still-living maple.

[ ] Write-in (Let your imaginations run wild! Mehr requires trees, preferably resinous ones.)

A peaceful God of Light sounds lovely.

No opinion on the second vote.

Is the tree fireproof and explosion proof?

Mehr died because of a random explosive tree, and i am worried Mehr might burn it down.
