In the story between Light and Darkness, there are thousands more that are far less world shaking.

This is one of them.

A story about a young girl who had everything before it all slowly burned to ash from her own touch, and those that try to save her from the pit of despair she has been condemned to.

These words define you.

They are your blessing.

They are your curse.

For others, The War is everything. For you though, it is a distraction from the reason you exist.

Once upon a time, a young girl had everything a young girl could desire. A family that loved her. Friends that cheered for her. A future brighter than anyone could imagine. But it wasn't to last; Her magic awoke in that singularity of unfettered affection and adoration and ignited in the worst of ways. Reducing everything surrounding her to ash.

Horrified and driven by guilt, the young girl named after Fortune set herself to repent for events beyond her control. An unreasonable guilt for something that wasn't her fault hanging around her neck like a noose. She joined her Light to the greater and fought. Struggling to quiet the ghosts that haunted her. But, yet again, it was for naught.

Her power grew, and the new friends she made learned what it meant to grow too close to the Sun. One more, ash was all that she left in her wake willingly or not. A star of annihilation that condemned everything around her simply by existing.

So she made a wish.

And the result of that wish...

Is you.

[] A quiet Prayer, repeated endlessly in her heart.
A nearly impossible journey, but an easy end in happiness.
As an Angel you know why you were born. Because what gave birth to you crafted you for that purpose. A young girl who prayed to be loved, who you love without hesitation. You've been trying to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, but you're out of time. The girl you're meant to love has faltered and left with her overwhelming light. You want to save her, to give her the love you've been born with. To soften her Light into something others can exist within. To save her from her loneliness.
Pros:
-Significant support Structure
-Potentially awesome might.
Cons:
-You start weak with an incomplete education.
-One wrong move and it will all come crashing down in failure.

[] A Wish twisted by Evil.
An easy journey, but a happy ending is nearly impossible.
Something that should not exist. A wish doomed to failure. A Child of Nightmare. You are exactly what she wished for: someone that loves her and only her. She is your world; nothing can change that fact and you're happy for it. But it won't last. It can't last. You cannot approach the sun without getting burned. You wish to hold her more than anything, but doing so will kill you. You love her, you need to love her... even if it means that split moment of happiness that is all you can give her will finally destroy her when you die in her arms.
Pros
-Practically nothing will be able to stop you unless you run into something really out there.
-You're tailor made to make your beloved happy as she can be.
Cons
-No one will help you.
-Tragedy is the only way this can end... Or is it?

How to read a character sheet:

(Organizations/Affiliations) Name Slide

Character Name

An image might be here. Highway to Hell will not have images for many of its cast.

The first slide, the name slide, is primarily flavor text. Character epithets, images, and blurbs will be here.

Stats

Health: 500
Base Damage: 100
Base Resilience: 100
Magic Modifier: 75

Affinities: Affinity 1 | Affinity 2 | Growth Affinity

The second slide is the stats slide.

Base Health is self explanatory.

Base Damage is the damage the character does with a normal attack from their weapon. 'Variable' for the base damage may be seen when the character has multiple weapons with differing base damages.

Base Resilience is the defense stat. Any damage the character would take will generally be reduced by their base resilience as part of the defensive string.

Magic Modifier is the 'bonus' stat. It gets added to every basic attack offensive string and every defensive string the character makes. Spells often have their own magic modifier stat, which are only applied when the spell is cast.

Affinities are akin to types in something like Pokemon. Characters with similar affinities will tend to do similar things, have similar weaknesses, and/or have similar aesthetics.

Generally, the more affinities a character has, the stronger they are. Gods, for example, start at 7 affinities for the weakest among them.

On Magical Girls, the last affinity they have is known as a Growth Affinity. These have 8 levels, from lowest to highest: Story Maker, Myth Maker, Legend Maker, Story, Myth, Legend, Epic, and Divinity. This affinity tracks the Existential Weight of the magical girl, or in other words, how much them simply existing distorts the world.

Weapon

Weapon Name
Level: 1
Actions Per Turn: 1
Affinities: Affinity 1 | Affinity 2 | Growth Affinity
Abilities: Ability 1

The weapon slide tracks every weapon the character has.

Weapons usually have levels, and can be leveled like every other levelable item on a character sheet. Adoration is an exception.

The actions per turn stat measures how many attacks a character can make in a turn. It also correlates to how fast a character is: faster characters will tend to have more ApT, and things which increase ApT tend to make characters faster.

Not every action in a turn will be spent by every character, as characters may not be in range to attack, may not want to attack for some reason, or countless other factors.

Weapons can also have affinities. They will generally be affinities that their holder has.

Weapons may also have keyword abilities. These can vary in far too many ways to explain concisely. Generally, a character sheet in Highway to Hell will come with a keyword ability index that explains what each keyword on the sheet means.

Spells

Placeholder Spell
Flavor Text. Very complicated spells may use this as a description instead
Level: 1
Base Damage: 100
Magic Modifier: 100
Affinities: Affinity 1 | Affinity 2 | Growth Affinity
Abilities: Ability 1 | Ability 2

The next slide is the spell slide. Generally, characters can only cast one spell per turn (Adoration specifically has an ability that lets her bypass this restriction). In exchange for this limitation, every spell has more Metaphysical 'Weight', than an attack would. As a result, spells cannot be intercepted by non-spells, nor can they be parried.

That being said, not all spells are cast by wizards. A spell can simply be something a character could normally do, with more 'oomph' behind it, literally and metaphysically. For example, Adoration doesn't actually need to conjure and throw all of her spears by hand: Absolute Territory is Adoration creating spears everywhere within her range instantly, no spell incantation necessary.

Spells generally have a level, base damage, and magic modifier, as they cause offensive strings just like attacks do. If a spell does not cause damage for some reason, it will be denoted with a N/A for base damage and Magic Modifier.

Spells have affinities, just like attacks and characters.

Spells have abilities as well. These will also be found in the character's keyword ability index. Spells often have more abilities than weapons do, as they are more complex.

Abilities

Ability Name
Flavor Text. Tends to be present on more powerful abilities
Level: 1 (Not all abilities have levels)
-Ability description. This tells you what the ability does, when it may trigger, etc.

Personal abilities go on the ability slide. These are generally more complex and more unique than keyword abilities. Personal abilities may or may not have hard mechanical effects: Adoration's 'Inhuman Agility' has no effect on her strings or on her stats, but it does allow her to do things like forgo a parachute when skydiving.

Aw shit, here we go again. Let's pick the hard mode difficulty again, just like in the original quest. Besides, pretty dragon lady make brain go brrrrrrr.

[X] A Wish twisted by Evil.
An easy journey, but a happy ending is nearly impossible.

[X] A quiet Prayer, repeated endlessly in her heart.

Work our asses off and find a happy ending sounds much better to me than an easy ride down a slippery slope to tragedy.

I'd rather have a difficult journey to a happy ending, than an easy one near completely damned to despair from the beginning.

"Or is it?" Well, let's find out.

Iiiinteresting. I remember having a lot of trouble following the original quest trying to read through it a couple of years ago, but I am intrigued. Let's see how it is participating.

[x] A Wish twisted by Evil.

In any case, I'm a big tragedy fan, and if we could stop it from being a tragedy, all the better.

I remember what a Child of Nightmare is.

I can also see quite a few people who are unaware that the doomed to tragedy is a fact and not a challenge.

Personally, I have read far too many "build from nothing, but your win is guaranteed" stories.

What kind of tale of love and desperation is it if you already know that in the end you are going to win? I want to struggle, I want to fight against the fundamental forces of the universe that contrive to keep us apart from our beloved, I want to take the universe and break it over my knee for her.

Sorry, I am tempted by the Angel but... We've got Gabriel already in the main quest (prays it revives one day) and whilst we've seen Nightmares like this... I want to explore more about what it's like for a Maiden and a Magical Girl's wishes.

I voted for the Angel precisely because there is no gurantee of success. I have no idea how you got a guranteed win from 'an easy path to happiness', but that's outright not what was said at all. In much the same way that the invisitext saying there's a slim chance of happiness with the Greater Nightmare means that the Greater Nightmare path isn't guranteed to end in tragedy.
If you're going to use that line of reasoning, at least make it clear that it applies both ways.

[X] A quiet Prayer, repeated endlessly in her heart.

Yea uh Greater Nightmares aren't exactly pleasant, and not being railroaded into tragedy won't change the fact that they're very much so a wish granted by a magical system that has been fed training data from the Asshole Genie's How-To book.

So less hard mode, and more expect something along the lines of a built in Catch 22 into the relationship. The example given is one individual loses lifespan for them being near each-other, and the other individual loses lifespan from being separated.
