Cat and Mouse (Legend of Five Rings)

Wade Garrett

Just trying to do the right thing
Pronouns
He/His/Him

The year is 1110, and Yasuki Genma has a problem.

In truth, the daimyo of Face of the East Castle has many problems, but this one in particular demands his attention. His dungeon currently holds a very notorious bandit: Sokon "The Cat" of the Forest Killers

A notorious bandit that Bayushi Yajiro, daimyo of the Palace of Crimson Shadows, would very much like delivered to him alive "so that he may face justice for his crimes against the Scorpion Clan." (Crimes which doubtless have no connection at all to the scandalous rumors that Yajiro's favorite concubine recently gave birth to a daughter who looks nothing at all like a Bayushi and a great deal like a certain Forest Killer.)

That's where you come in.

As members of the Crane Clan, it is your duty to see that peace and harmony reign among the various factions of Rokugan. To solve the problems of others in an honorable manner, befitting the descendants of Lady Doji. And if all this problem solving and harmony promoting usually seems to rebound to the benefit of your Clan...well. The Fortunes smile upon honorable samurai.

Genma has indicated he would be happy to accept your aid, that he might be so happy he would possibly consider re-examining certain matters in his jurisdiction pertaining to certain interests of your Clan...if you can successfully deliver Sokon to the Scorpion alive.

In Brief:
-This RP will be played using the Legend of Five Rings 4th Edition system.

-No more than 4-5 characters will be accepted.

-All character submissions must be members of the Crane Clan.

-To offset this limitation, the Advantage "Different Schools" may be taken for a cost 3 exp instead of 5.

-Those who go through the "20 Questions" part of Character Generation will receive an additional 20 starting exp to spend on their character.

-Applications will be chosen according to the criteria of "I the GM like this one in particular", first come first served is not a thing, so shoot for quality, not throwing a character together ASAP.

Edit:
For clarity's sake/easy skimming on the GM's part, I would prefer everyone group their Ring/Traits, Skills, and Advantages and Disadvantages together, something like the example below.

Expressing an interest. I might very well go for a Daidoji... we'll see.

Out of curiousity, are we allowed to roll on the Heritage tables? I find those entertaining at times.

As long as you use the site roller or provide a link the rolz or other online dice simulator you're using, go for broke. :)

I am going with my idea of a a bit to fiery crane that was trained by the *looks at the timeline* Centipede clan.
And well onwards for the heritage rolls.

Currently considering options for having fun times and adventure. This is my first time playing a "High Honor" Clan if you will, so it's requiring a shift in my usual routine.

I'll have to edit it to be from crane but sheet incoming.

I'm gonna roll for Heritage. Someone needs to tell me what I got tho.

2 is Shameful Past, and a 10 would be:

"Your ancestor claimed a rival's art as his own, earning the praise of the Imperial Court. But if the truth ever comes out, it could be the ruin of your family. You gain the Disadvantage: Dark Secret".

Hmm, have something coming together. Actively working on my sheet now.

I think you'll like him.

Fujihiro Morito
1) Fujihiro Morito is a Crane and he adheres the the ideals of the artistic heart of the empire.
2) He is a Fujihiro, a family that is vassel to the Daidoji. Their role is to create armour and polearms for the armies of the clan. Naturally they would be happy to serve in other ways as well. Perhaps taking the honour of creating the Kakita blades from the Ashidaka? They are featured in the Book of Earth.
3) Morito is a Bushi trained as an Iron Warrior although he would have liked to have been an artisan. He has no real combat experience.
4) He dyes his hair white, much like most of the clan, but has also grown a goatee which is likewise dyed. He isn't overly tall but he is rake thin and has cordy arm muscle from his smithing.

The shaft of his naginata is wood-stained blue so that you can still see the grain of the wood and the blade gleams in any light it catches but the most notable thing about it is the white crane feathers that flutter loosely bellow the head of the weapon as fascinators. His armour is laquered a much darker blue than his spear. It too shines. Underneath his armour he wears cloth of pure white without patterns. His fingernails have the same laquer as is used on his armour.

When not in armour he does not paint his nail and tend to wear darker clothing that won't show dust, burns and stains as clearly. Often although not always brown it has patterns in it. This is mainly so that he isn't ever thought to be wearing peasent fabric. When travelling or outside all day he wears a wide brimed straw hat.
Morito yearns to be an artist but recognises that he will never be able to move beyond the ordinary duties of the bushi unless he can show true talent. Although he never neglects his training, he does practice painting in his free time where a more driven samurai might train in his weapons.
Morito's most respected aquaintance is in fact his sensai back at the dojo. He has five siblings, all older, all distant. His mother served in the army of the clan until his father's death during Morito's second year at the dojo but then came home to run the household and serve the daimyo as a courtier.
His biggest strength is no doubt his honour. Strong and fierce Morito isn't scared of anything because he knows that his next incarnation will be born higher in the celestial order.

His biggest weakness may in the long term be his lack of commitment to the arts of the bushi but practically he has a lower status than most people he meets. This means that he must not speak until spoken to. Naturally barriers begin to break down as familiarity sets in, pertinent information has to be commuicated and other common situations occur. Nevertheless it does make friendships a little bit harder to start.
Morito strongly adheres to bushido which is in line with the Doji, Kakita and Asahina. Daidoji tend to be more practical so he is a bit odd compared to most of the people he interacts with on a daily basis
Morito is a loyalist to the ideals of Lady Doji through and through. Sometimes he wishes more of his clanmates would travel the world spreading their vision to all the clans but most mornings he just prays to the most graceful fortune and trusts in her heirs.
No, however he suspects that his mother is thinking about nokado
Morito dislikes people of unkempt appeances. With samurai, they often outrank him so he has learnt to put up with his own disgruntlement. With heimin, he sometimes makes his views known quite clearly but mostly snubs those who fail in his eyes. With hinin he expects best dressed formal wear whenever they interact with him. He is a samurai after alll.
Morito is loyal to the daimyo of the Fujihiro of course! Naturally however his duties require much interaction with the Daidoji. He admires and tries to emulate the decendents of Lady Doji. Lastly, he offers all due respect to his own immediate family because distant as his relationship is he still loves them.
Morito's most loved possession is a fine comb made of wood imported from the mountains of the dragon and inlaid with pearl. It was a gift from his sensei for passing his gempukku.

His most hated thing is his Han-Kyu which he inherited from his father. They were distant, which he regrets and so just looking at the thing brings the sin welling up in his soul. Its awful but he has no options - he'd regret destroying it.
Like most of his clan Morito is well trained in perfect court etiquette but he isn't perfect. He often hides small objects up his sleaves using sleight of hand. Wrappers are unsightly but a servant won't clear them up from in his sleaves so at the end of the day when he is getting undressed he often has a small pile of rubbish to dispose of.
The most common emotion for Morito to show is enthusiasm - his art is practiced almost every day, in private, and he enjoys every moment of it. Naturally in public honour demands On and Morito is very honourable indeed. Satisfaction glows on the inside but it doesn't shine from his eyes.
He has no subordinates of the samurai caste and so can only speculate. Usually however he makes weapons so if someone were to waste materials he would make them redo the project using their own time and their own money. Maybe
Morito's mother and father had no complaints about his behavour per se. The art was a bit over the top and as he grew up the emotional distance grew but ultimately they all loved each other. After Morito's father's death everyone greived seperately.
Morito wants to be recognised by all the empire for his paintings. He knows how unlikely that is but he hopes and he often shows his art to others. One day...
Morito prays to his ancestors each morning as is proper. At home this is generally for an hour but in the field he cuts that down by half. As far as festivals go he likes to enjoy the moment. Is there a better way to grow gratitude within your heart to the fortunes?
Morito is aware that he has no great destiny in this life. An astrologer once told him so. That means that he will be reincarnated. That means that his next life will be determined by his honour in this one. Morito is determined that his death will come before the first hint of dishonour. But hopefully after a child or two to carry on the family line.
Born to a vassal family of the Daidoji that makes weaponry, Morito dreamt of something more than war, he dreamt of a life of culture and art. Unfortunately his parents dreamt of a son who did his duty and their astrologer didn't see any fate worth gainsaying them. Instead of learning amongst the best of the future artisans of the clan in the Kakita Artisan Academy Morito had to practice in his spare time in the midst of future Daidoji Iron Warriors.

Nevertheless he persevered with his dreams and eventually became quite good at painting. Morito was not a clear prodigy in the fighting arts nor was he notable slow so he was granted the right to gempukku at the age of fifteen. Upon completion of the ceremony he named himself after Doji Morito, an obscure clan champion during the thousand years of peace who led the clan for forty years of unmatched prosperity.

Naturally, as a son of the Fujihiro, Morito has spent the six months since his gempukku creating and maintaining weapons but he is relatively unskilled as of yet so his main duties in spring and autumn were oversight of the heimin who make yari for ashigaru. During his one summer war he marched with the baggage train and only saw a single skirmish.

Doji Natsumi-Choo Choo
Here goes! Still a WIP.

Basics
Name: Doji Natsumi
School: Doji Courtier
Age: 16
Insight: 133
Honor: 6.5
Glory: 1.0
Status: 1.0

Heritage Roll: Your ancestor ignored his duty to the Crane and followed a personal quest to a different school in another clan. He made allies for your family but his obsessive nature has been passed down to you. You may take the Different School Advantage for two less points, but you have the Driven Disadvantage.

Natsumi is an only child, the cherished daughter of a mid-ranking Doji courtier and his Kakita wife. Born into great wealth and prosperity, she was unusually coddled and spoiled throughout her upbringing, her parents very indulgent of her.

She's a sweet girl, though, which can work both for and against her. On the one hand, she is very charming and likable, and her friendly cheer is disarming. On the other hand, her sheltered life has allowed her to believe that there is good in every person, and she wants to assume the best of the people she meets.

When it comes to her training, she has always been a bit of a dilettante. In addition to her mandatory studies in courtesy and etiquette, she takes in new knowledge and skill with a voracious appetite helped by her quick mind; she wants to learn everything, try everything, experience everything. As a result of her flighty and unfocused attitude, she knows a little about a lot, skilled at a variety of things but not truly master of any one of them. Still, she's talented and a fast learner; she has an especially lovely voice, and a knack for performing.

The reason a talented, sheltered courtier and entertainer is being sent on a mission like this? Weeeell. She caught her superior in a lie, and corrected it without a second thought, in front of other people. She genuinely thought that her superior merely did not remember! She was just trying to help! Look how helpful she is!

Apprentice Doji courtiers are taught to rely on their Honor when dealing with others, infusing their every word and gesture with the power of their purity, and to build networks of allies by discerning what others need and fulfilling those needs. So long as you maintain your Honor Rank at 6.0 or better, you gain a Free Raise on all Courtier, Sincerity, and Etiquette rolls. Also, by conversing with another person for a few minutes, you can make a Contested Roll of Courtier (Manipulation) / Awareness against the target's Etiquette (Courtesy) / Awareness to learn whether they are in need of any favors or assistance (such as needing travel papers to reach another province, for example).

1. "It is my great honor and privilege to be a part, however humble, of the Crane Clan."

2. "I am a member of the Doji family, and I'll do my best to respect our traditio

3. "Ah, I was trained in the ways of the court at Shizuka Toshi. I'll confess, I rather miss those days. The dojo was like a world of its own, remote and isolated as it was."

4. Natsumi is very short and slender, and is occasionally mistaken for much younger than she really is. She has the blue eyes of the Crane, and she dyes her long hair white; she usually leaves it hanging loose, or bound back with a simple tie to keep it out of her face. She's pretty enough, with a soft, round face and charming dimples, but a legendary beauty she is not.

5. "As far as my duties permit, I'd like to see the world! I want to learn everything, experience everything that the world has to offer. As much as I can within a lifetime... ah, within reason, of course. I would never do forbidden things that would dishonor my Clan."

6. "I am very close with my parents, particularly my mother. While father was always away because of his duties, mother... mother is of ill health, and would stay home with me. I worry for her, truth be told; she has been of sickly disposition for as long as I can remember."

7. Natsumi's greatest strength is her boundless optimism. No matter how dire circumstances may seem, she'll maintain a positive attitude and continue to hope that everything will turn out for the best. This, of course, leads into her greatest weakness - her idealistic naivete. She wants to believe that good will always triumph over evil in the end, and that every person can be redeemed. This is, perhaps, not the most realistic view of the world to take.

8. "Bushido is of utmost importance, of course. It is difficult for me, a mere mortal, to follow such exalted tenets... but I do try, and I value all of them. I know that some of my fellow Crane twist the truth as they will for the good of the Clan, and I'm trained to do the same if I must... but it's a rather distasteful practice, is it not?"

9. "I am Crane, and the love I hold for my Clan cannot be put into words. Whatever its faults may be, I can honestly say that I look at all the other Clans and find them wanting by comparison."

10. "Married? Oh no, not yet. But one day, I hope I will be!"

11. Oh, she subscribes to common Crane prejudices slavishly. Natsumi has been very sheltered, rarely interacting with members of other Clans; as a result, she has not been able to form her own opinions.

12. "Oh. I am loyal to my parents, of course, and to my former sensei who taught me so much. And I am loyal to my superior, I suppose, liar or not. I have been decisively informed that it is not my place to question the honor of someone above my station, despite any blatant falsehoods they might speak."

13. "Ah! The most beautiful place in the world is surely Kyuden Doji, and the Fantastic Gardens in particular. As a child, my father would bring me there once every year while the cherry trees were in bloom. I would spend hours there among the flowers and trees, just relaxing and enjoying myself. My least favorite place? Um... a boat. Any boat. The sea is beautiful, but the rolling motions of the ship do not agree with me."

14. "I haven't noticed it myself, but I have been told that I have a habit of twirling a lock of hair around my finger when deep in thought. That, and I have an unfortunate tic of shifting from side to side when I'm nervous; I try to curb this tell as best as I can."

15. "Truth be told, I have been reprimanded more times than I can count for being a little too free with my emotions. I am not Ikoma. And I understand why, and I really do try to maintain dignity as best as I can, but a smile or two can't hurt, can it? Not when there are so many beautiful, joyous things in this world to smile because of."

16. "Ah... I can't really see myself in that situation, but I suppose that I would forgive them. All I could ask is that my subordinates try their best, and I'm certain that they would; if they do something wrong, it's surely because of ignorance and inexperience rather than malice, and the best thing to do would be to teach them the proper way."

17. An only child, Natsumi was longed for by her parents, who had her quite late. They love her deeply and indulge her quite far, delighted as they are by their quick-witted, charming daughter.

18. "Ambitions? Mm. I want to see the world, and I want to make my Clan and my parents proud by serving to the best of my ability. I am happy as I am, and I'm sure I would be happy even if I were Emerald Champion as long as I stay true to myself. It matters not to me."

19. "I would say that I'm as religious as the next person; I'll say a quick prayer to the Fortunes before I attempt something difficult, and I like to visit the temple when I find the time, but I'm hardly a shugenja."

20. "Oh, I don't even want to think about that. I hope that, when I do die, a long time from today... I hope I'll be old, and that I've seen and done everything that I want to, and that I didn't dishonor my Clan. Then I can die happy."

1. It is her honor and privilege to be part of the Crane Clan.

2. Natsumi is part of the Doji family.

3. The Crane has trained her as a diplomat and courtier.

5. Natsumi wants to experience the world! She wants to see everything, learn everything, try everything... ah, within reason, of course. She'll draw the line at maho and other such taboo things.

6. Natsumi is unusually close with her parents for a samurai, especially with her mother. Her mother is very frail and sickly due to complications from giving birth to Natsumi, and she would always be home with her daughter rather than out on assignments because of it.

8. Natsumi follows Bushido as best she can, placing an equal value on all the tenets; indeed, she has a higher view of Honesty than most courtiers. She will tell technical truths, since she must, but she finds such dancing around to be rather distasteful.

9. The Crane is her life. Natsumi loves her Clan, and she is loyal to her very last breath. She can wish that Honesty would be held in higher regard by her fellows - and then she looks at the Scorpion and realizes that really, the Crane isn't so bad.

10. No, she is not.

11. Oh, she subscribes to common Crane prejudices slavishly. Natsumi has been very sheltered, rarely interacting with members of other Clans; as a result, she has not been able to form her own opinions.

12. She is loyal to her superior, though her personal opinion has dimmed somewhat following an incident where she corrected a blatant lie, in the sincere belief that perhaps it was a case of faulty memory. It was not. On a personal note, she is very fond of her former sensei, and loyal to her.

13. Natsumi's favorite place in the world is the Fantastic Gardens at Kyuden Doji. Her father would bring her once every year for a week, while the cherry trees were in bloom, and she was happy to spend hours there, reading or writing poetry or painting or whatever else her hobby was at the time. Her least favorite place is on a ship, any ship - she gets very seasick.

14. Natsumi has a little habit of twirling a lock of her hair around her finger while she's deep in thought. She tends to shift from side to side when nervous, a habit she's aware of and does her best to curb.

15. Throughout her life, Natsumi has often been reprimanded for being a little too free with her emotions than is appropriate for a samurai not of the Ikoma. She's been forced to learn how to mask her emotions, but her cheerful nature makes her smile a bright and frequent sight. She is much better at concealing negative emotions than she is positive.

16. Natsumi would be a very lenient, forgiving superior. She wants to see the best in everyone, and assumes that everyone would try their best. If a subordinate did something wrong, she would gently attempt to correct the behavior.

17. An only child, Natsumi was longed for by her parents, who had her quite late. They love her deeply and indulge her quite far, delighted as they are by their quick-witted, charming daughter.

18. Natsumi isn't a very ambitious person, really. She is happy as she is, serving her Clan in whatever capacity her superiors see fit; the concept of status-climbing is, if not foreign to her, then at least not so appealing that she'd actively strive for it.

19. Natsumi is religious in a casual kind of way; she'll say a quick prayer to the Fortunes before attempting something difficult, and if she has the time, she'll visit temples on an occasional basis.

20. Her death would be in panicked defiance. She's not ready yet! She has too much to live for, there is too much she has yet to see, too much to do. She would fight for her life tooth and nail. The exception would be if she'd dishonored herself so thoroughly that seppuku was the only way to make up for it - then she'd vow to experience in next life what she did not in this one.

Please edit in your Actual Ranks in Skills instead of just the Dice rolled/Dice Kept, makes it easier for me to keep track of things.

1) "I'm with the Crane--yeah, yeah, I know. 'This sleepy prick's part of those uptight birds?' It's not something either of us like to particularly advertise, but that's the way it goes when you're in their disfavor and shoved off as far off into the corner as you might like. It's fine with me though, 'cause I'm not an ambitious guy. Good food, good friends, and the occasional bit of trickery is all a man needs to live a happy life. Leave that politicking shit to my cousins."

2) "The Doji. Yes, the Doji, stop laughing, it's not nearly as funny to be the relaxed and laid back guy in the family of uptight courtiers."

3) "Strictly speaking, I'm technically a Bushi--fair fights are for suckers and dead men though, and I intend to live a very long time. It's less complicated than you think, when the only real peers you've got in terms of sneaky tricks and playing the long game are the Scorpion and the Crab--much as my cousins like to look down on them, they've got good tricks up their sleeves, and the best way to win a war is to tie the other guy's arms against their back."

4) Kazuki is a lean, athletic runner, favoring earth tones over the bright blues and whites of the rest of his clan--with the only nod towards his origin being the lock of bleached white hair at his brow--a sign of solidarity with the Daidoji who took him in and trained him while his father was busy being executed for cowardice in the face of the enemy (He was trained in the Kakita School, he had a perfectly good argument for not getting stuck in a meat grinder siege. Didn't help him though when he failed to make sure someone with a grudge against him didn't see him making his excuses and running away).

5) "Good food, good friends, and the right to set my own pace in life. Climbing the political ladder is something for other people, I'm happier with my feet on the ground and looking forward to the next day."

6) "My little sister Hanako--she's an adorable bundle of tsundere joy who's nonetheless got a plan to climb the political ladder, and the skills to pull it off despite Father's indiscretion. I figure the least I could do is give her a hand by helping clean up the family name with making sure this favor here works out nicely."

7) Kazuki has a twisty mind and is perfectly willing to stack the deck in his favor before joining battle in earnest--which gives him a decisive edge against many others in spite of his less focused combat training. His weaknesses--that being said--are manifold, chief among them being a terminal reluctance to employ more than the minimal degree of effort to solve a problem, leading to him not quite polishing his skills as much as much as he could.

8) "Bushido is a wonderful ideal that runs face first into the fact that the world does not work that way. It's a set of chains to keep the powerful from going mad with it and disrupting the Empire at large. It's something that it'd be nice if it wasn't so easily set aside through technicalities or just making a token acknowledgement. I respect it for the ideal, but I don't let it stop me from doing what I have to."

9) "Bleh, I don't get along with my Clan, and they don't get along with me. We're both happy keeping each other at arm's length making token gestures towards solidarity and keeping the whole image of everyone getting along propped up."

10) "I don't really have much to offer, and any halfway decent courtier would probably take any arrangements as an insult. It'd be nice to get hitched with a decent girl somewhere, but I don't expect it to happen anytime soon."

11) "You can go call the Crab dirty savages and the Scorpion honorless dogs as much as you like, but I've worked alongside and against them often enough to respect their talents down on the ground. Hell, two of my best friends are from those clans!"

12) "Family first. Always family first... After that, I suppose it's whoever's behalf I'm working on in this given season. My talents are only marginally useful in peacetime, so I tend to get shuffled around from flashpoint to flashpoint. Still, what's good for my superior of the season is good for my family, so it works out nicely."

13) "There's nothing quite so wonderful as that expression of dawning comprehension on someone you just cornered without them knowing it. It's why I still do this scouting thing, and why I always try to make a point of having a good view--usually up in the branches with my bow, waiting for the right moment to add the proper punctuation. Beyond that? Bleh... Court I suppose, I can hold my own there--thank you Hanako-chan--but it's still a boring game where everyone postures and pretends to be brave and honorable people until the sky caves in and someone gets killed heroically in a pointless duel."

14) Kazuki never stops moving unless his back is to a wall. He's never entirely comfortable unless his blind spots are covered--some might call it paranoia, he just calls it "Effective Training".

15) "Face? What's that? Oh, something where you're basically pretending like you're not actually a person because you're a super disciplined puppet? Yeah, no. Discipline is one thing--if something's worth doing, it's worth doing properly and in a single go--but I'm not going to do it in stony silence unless it's actually needed. If people want to bother me about it, that's their own job, I'll just take the opportunity to doze off while they're berating me."

16) "I'm not going to get too worked up over breaches of etiquette or trivial things like that. Our whole line of work is one massive breach of conventional etiquette. As long as they get the job done, I don't care about 'Proper' or 'Improper' behaviour. This changes quickly if they fuck up the job though. Drunk on sentry duty? You'll be lucky to get off with just a beating and latrine duty for a month. The job is paramount, and if you're going to do something, you do it right. What you do on your own time is none of my concern."

17) "A continual disappointment--he could have made a fine courtier like his sister, but I suppose his father's blood runs too thick within his veins."

18) "Get married to a nice girl at a quiet post somewhere and live a nice, long, happy life together with an arbitrary amount of kids."

19) "You pay your respects to the Fortunes as you go, because the absolute worst thing you can ever do is get on the nerves of one at a bad time. Osan-wo sending down a lightning bolt on the tree you're camped out on can be a pretty terminal outcome."

20) "Happy, Free, and Without Regrets."
